Publisher's Summary:
Recently Christopher Scott Downing documented his failed attempt to overcome depression without doctors, therapists, or medication. The result is a Mr. Fix-it caper gone absurdly wrong. It's hilarious at times, deeply personal, and ultimately eye-opening. Finally, it's a wake-up call to men -and their loved ones- who misunderstand depression or are commonly resistant to talking about it.
"The book is exceptionally well-crafted and compelling." (onlinebookclub.com)

Heartfelt and humorous memoir about depression
âVan Gogh in Peppersâ is an open and brutally honest memoir of the authorâs struggle with a major depressive disorder over a period of six months. His single and most powerful message, especially to men is to not try to go it alone.
Christopher Scott Downingâs voice is original and quirky. He tells a personal and at times harrowing and humiliating story about a dark time in his life, but he injects it with powerful humour.
As I read about the authorâs struggle with alcohol, depression and anxiety, I found myself cheering him on and hoping he would find an answer. Scenes like those from the retailing world, his application for the volunteer program in Guatemala and being locked out of the house were clever blends of humour and tragedy that evoked so many heartfelt emotions.
Christopher Scott Downing has proved he is a talented writer. I definitely want to read more from this author and to know he has found the solution to his life dilemma. I also hope it helps others suffering in isolation from depression and anxiety.
Captivating, Hilarious, WOW
Christopher has this way of making the reader feel exactly what he is feeling. In the moment you laugh, cry, empathize, laugh some more, yell a little, then you see a little bit of yourself (or someone else) in Christopher. When you step back, you can't help but reflect yourself.
He writes in a way that leaves you wanting more.
This book is truly a great read for everyone, whether you're going through something yourself or if you know someone who is. It's captivating, hilarious, just WOW.
5/5 stars!!!!
An authentic and courageous look at male depression
While depression is prevalent in today's society, it is unfortunate that there is still great stigma attached to obtaining mental health treatment. Christopher's memoir not only captures what everyday life might look like for adult men with depression, but also exhibits the resistance many depressed men have toward asking for help and admitting that healing depression requires more than willpower, alcohol and wishful thinking.
