A combination of good information and some misinformation

This book does offer a mostly good, useful overview of psychopathy, narcissism and other personality disorders. But its shortcomings are significant. The advice it offers to confront someone you suspect may have one of these conditions, however tactfully, is not only naive; it irresponsible because this advice is potentially dangerous. It is true that an incapacity for empathy and a lack of conscience, the most fundamental (and devastating) aspects of these mental illnesses, occur on a continuum. So there are people with narcissistic tendencies who are not completely without conscience. Yet anyone who is so far along the continuum that they could be considered "almost a psychopath" is someone who breeds misery, and very possibly enjoys doing so. Therefore a well-meaning conversation about their damaging conduct by someone who is not a mental health professional and who may even be one of their deliberate targets, at best is likely to exacerbate the problem. Such a conversation could even lead to tragedy, but is highly unlikely to improve the situation. The hallmark of personality disorders is that they typically hurt those who come in contact with the psychopath, narcissist etc., while the person with the condition, by definition, does not believe he or she has a problem. They act the way they do because, as one self-help guru has put it, "it works for them." (At least it seems to work in their favor in the short term, from their limited perspective.) The details of the advice in Almost a Psychopath about reporting the problem within the workplace should also be taken with a grain of salt. This is because, as the book actually admits, such reporting involves compounding, rarely reducing, the risk to yourself (which is one of the things a skillful psychopath is counting on). The best defense is to eliminate the personality-disordered individual from your life if possible, or at least to limit your interaction with them, and/or to work with a vetted, reliable mental health-care professional to address the serious problems caused by the presence of the (almost or otherwise) psychopath in your life.

He hadn't realized how far holographic technology had come at that point and couldn't imagine that it was merely a vaporous projection. I bring up these three examples because they underline something fundamental in our assessment of the consciousness of others. We can be easily duped.

Not only can we impute conscious intentionality onto machine operated mannequins that lack it, we can even do it photographic film. Yet phenomenologically speaking, our own experience at the time of interacting with an audio-animatronics seems essentially the same as when we talk to certain humanoids. In other words, that which we believe is conscious turns out on closer inspection to be unconscious, at least in the commonsense ways that we use such terms in our day to day lives.

But we don't need to go Disneyland to discover this, since we already have firsthand experience of innumerable conflations when we fall asleep and dream. In a strong dream, so many characters come alive and we interact as if each of them is real. Only when we wake up do we acknowledge that everything that occurred in the dream was simulated by us. We are, in sum, dreaming ourselves in various guises, even if we may be deceptively tricked to believe otherwise. Such is the confusing nature of our own self-awareness that we even objectify our own personas in various garbs and believe them to be ontologically apart from our own neural projections.

Philosophy and Consciousness and some Physics

I got sucked in by the word Disneyland. That made me think this was going to be easy to understand. Have avoided studying Philosophy, but I keep tripping over it when I want to listen to books about Consciousness. Philosophy and Physics are apparently a foundation to understanding (or thinking about and framing) Consciousness.

There's a lot of philosophy discussed, and some physics, and reference to famous philosophers' ideas, or physicists theories, and Quantum stuff.

Made me stretch to understand, and I fell short, but for someone interested in Philosophy, Physics, and Consciousness, this could be a fun listen.

Short but helpful.

This book was much shorter than I'd expected but had helpful information. Pretty basic info.

There is HOPE , IF the narcissist wants to change.

Great description of symptoms . If the narcissist is willing to get treatment , his world can change for the best . He can learn to recognize and appreciate kindness & love and even reciprocate. Whole families can benefit and heal if everyone will participate in treatment .

Really more an article than a book. Very basic.

Short intro to the basic ideas. The suggested actions are more "soothing" than helpful. Disappointed.

Short and Sweet, but makes me want to know more

Having read this, I now want to know more about how to start the diet. It does give a breakdown of the diet at the end, but I am going to need to know more than just a list of foods to get started. A good intro to the GAPS diet.

Simple and informative

This a great book if you're looking for a natural treatment for ADHD. It's simplified, and direct you to the right sources. I think it's a good prequel or introduction for the GAPS book.

I read a paragraph on Maslow in an education book. I wanted to learn more. This 4 hour audiobook doesn't offer more. Loosely speaking, it just repeats about three paragraph of knowledge, with the words in a different order.

Great Author- Great Narrator

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook much more than I'd expected. The content was predictably fascinating- really well-written; and the narration was exceptionally good. The finished product was entertaining, engaging and very easy listening.

Great ideas, expression and presentation

Having Simon Jones read this book was an inspired choice. The tone of the writing has that incredulous amazement at the folly and brilliance of human beings that Jones expressed so entertainingly on Douglas Adams' audio creations. Ariely's work into what motivates us is similarly sideways and draws on many different disciplines within social science and economics to design research that generates interesting and revealing experimental data. The interpretation of this data is always intelligent, perceptive and full of humour and humanity, and he is not afraid to discover unexpected richness in his results.

excellent and interesting

whilst I don't think this was as good as his original, predictably irrational, this was still interesting and enjoyable. much of the content related to real life work situations for me, and I have shared several stories multiple times since. this had definitely helped me gain a better appreciation for some circumstances and their outcome. would get the next in the series if there is one. the narrator is engaging and sucks you in on a ten hour journey.
