Extremely well produced story

What did you love best about The Long Patrol?

This is more audio drama than just reading of a book. Multiple actors and voices led even more interest to an already well written story. Although a "kids book", our whole family (including teenage boys) enjoyed this as we traveled.

Amazing story and an amazing series!

This is an amazing story that is part of this wonderful series. What a treat it is to hear the story told by the author himself. This series is a treasure trove of wonderful adventure, fantasy and fun. I would recommend it for young and old alike!

My personal favorite of the series

Not everyone seems to think so, but this one is my favorite for the whole Redwall series. It covers a more serious theme than usual, keeps a lot of humor around it, and has some very heroic moments by different characters.

Where does The Long Patrol rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

The Long Patrol was a fun story to listen to. It has a cast reading the various speaking roles as well as being narrated by the author. It was one of the better books I have listened to recently.

What did you like best about this story?

For long-time Redwall fans, this story involved characters from all areas of Mossflower: Hares, otters, shrews, Badgers, and Redwallers. It was a story of coming of age for the main character. It had adventure, celebrations, and the bad guys were really bad but buffoonish. It was later than Redwall in Redwall's timeline, but it had some aspects that went back to the Mossflower story, which was fun because it recalled that book for me.

Have you listened to any of Brian Jacquess other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is about the 7th Brian Jacque's performance I have listened to. They are all good, and this one was as well.

The Redwall books are clever. They are written in a style that is reminiscent of Tolkien, with virtuous heroes, clumsy villains, poems and songs.

A pleasant kid's book

We are being set up here for a sequel, I can feel it in my multidimensional bones. Well written, well read, there is a clean line between good and evil that makes this pleasant fiction, but not up to Gaiman's usual level of ingenuity. It would make a great animated movie. Would I listen to the sequel? Probably not. But keeping the attention of a 52 year old woman with this type of story is worth some kind of kudos.

A good listen

I enjoyed this story. The plot and characters were interesting, and it shows a very interesting new take on the idea of multiple universes.

In some places the writing was a little bit awkward, not as polished as I've come to expect from Neil Gaiman. I don't know anything about the writing style of Michael Reaves, but I don't think he deserves the blame.

I think what's likely is that it's a result of this story not being intended to be distributed as a book. It was originally a pitch for a television show, I'm guessing they had to make a lot of hurried modifications when there was a demand for it in book form.

There's not much character development. I think that's also a result of the story being written for television where the development happens over multiple episodes.

One thing I wonder: If every important decision splits off a new universe, what happens when you make an important decision when you're outside of them?

Interworld is a nice, light read. I recommend it.

great entertainment

This book was an easy listen, catching me quite early and letting me listen trough in almost one single setting. The plot is quite straightforward but builds good momentum, and the end is quite fast paced. It is not the usual Gaiman writing, this is not so dark and more young-reader oriented, but very enjoyable anyhow.

Recommended.

InterWorld: a fun romp through inter-space.

Interworld is a really fun sci-fi adventure. I read this with one of my sons and while it fits its Juvenile category, we both enjoyed it. It contains a really interesting backdrop of a multidimensional universes where the sliver that contains versions with alternate Earths is the focus, the Alternative. It plays out well with interesting, if not deep characters. This book is a lot like a good sci-fi summer film; its a great, fun ride with quick moving narrative hitting all the right spots for what its trying to do for its target audience (and beyond).

Wonderful Series

As a mother of very young children, I'm always on the hunt for books that interest me, yet are kid friendly. (no cussing, vulgarity, etc) This series is wonderful. If you liked the other Septimus books, you'll enjoy this one as well. The narrator is very good (after getting used to him in the second book) and one that I enjoy listening to. Though I do wish the had kept the original narrator from the first Septimus book.

A great 3rd book in the series

I really enjoy this series. It is very imaginative. And I do enjoy the narrator, Gerard Doyle, he make you "see" the story.

Ghosts, Cats, Dragons, Disapproving Queens, & Time

The third entry in Angie Sage's seven-book Sepimus Heap series, Physik (2007), begins with Septimus' feckless father Silas the Ordinary Wizard and his coarse "friend" Gringe the North Gate Gatekeeper (two of the many fallible adults whose mistakes make life interesting for Sage's child heroes and readers) "UnSealing" a Sealed room in the palace attic so that Silas may keep safe there his prized colony of sentient board game counters. By opening the Sealed room, the clueless men release two malevolent Substantial Spirits, the ghost of the wonderfully named Etheldredda the Awful, who has been waiting with her pointy chin, pointy ears, pointy shoes, and disapproving expression for 500 years to become Castle Queen again, this time forever, which may involve getting rid of any troublesome princesses in her way, and the ghost of her pet Aie-Aie, a red-eyed, snake-tailed, single-toothed creature with a penchant for spreading disease. Power from the Greenwitch...

Susan Cooper delivers yet another solid installment in the Dark is Rising sequence. Greenwitch opens with the thheft of the priceless golden grail recovered by the three Drew children in Over Sea, Under Stone. The culprits are the forces of the Dark, who are reeling from their midwinter defeat at the hands of Will Stanton and Meriman Lyon, but still determined to prevent the Light from achieving a final victory. Lyon enlists the Drews as well as Will to journey to Cornwall in an effort to reclaim the grail. My favorite of the series

I can't say enough good about this series. It's a piece of my childhood. And this book was my favorite of the series. Each story has a slightly different tone. I think this may have been the most personal of the stories that Susan Cooper wrote, since she said she identified with Jane, which this story follows more closely than the others.

Nice blast from the past

Loved it, brought me back to my childhood. I found it very amusing to hear the narrator dabble with varying accents... Impressed with his American/British hybrid accent! They should totally contract a studio ghibli project for this entire series!

Worth the revisit

I read this series as a child and loved it. Returning to it as an adult but read to like a child has been thrilling.

The narrator is very talented. He is able to embody both male and female characters as well as giving the sensing of young and old.

This is more than a 5star book

I absolutely loved this book and became irate when I found out that there isn't a sequal yet! I listened to it 2 times straight through! We have 6 kids and I am going to pass it on to the next one in line! They are anxious to hear it because it is all I have talked about for the last week. It opened up a whole new world just like the Artimus Fowl series did for me. The two main characters are full of life, intrigue, and a twist of humor. This is a must for any avid young adult mystery and magic listener.

Scepter of the Ancients is the first book in Derek Landys childrens series called SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT. The story follows 11 year old Stephanie Edgley who inherits her eccentric uncles property after he dies. Stephanie gets involved with some supernatural goings-on when a thief breaks into her new house (the one her uncle left her) and nearly kills her. To her rescue comes Skulduggery Pleasant a man who used to be alive but is now a magically animated skeleton. Stephanie and Skulduggery set out to solve a mystery and end up saving the world.

Stephanie is a great little protagonist shes smart and logical and mature. Skulduggery Pleasant is also a great character hes unusual and amusing, always cracking jokes in a dry but kind of obvious way that should appeal to the target audience of this book (ages 9 and up). Heres an example from the very end of the book where Skulduggery Pleasant is being interviewed:

"Interviewer: How would you describe yourself in five words?

Skulduggery Pleasant: Five words? Right, here goes, in no particular order, least of all alphabetical: Charming. Witty. Lethal. Brilliant. And modest."

Like I said, kind of obvious. But I will admit to snickering several times. (The above example wasnt one of them.) The characters, the humor and the creepy atmosphere are the defining features of this novel. Unfortunately, the plot seems to be of secondary importance to Landys writing process. Its fast-paced but its also predictable and full of clichés and cheesy villains. I thought it was bland and forgettable. Fortunately, this is something that can be fixed in future stories.

Still good, but a letdown from book one

Angie Sage's second installment was still entertaining, albeit a bit more predictable while the characters were rather more irritating than enchanting, as in the first. But, I can't help wonder if it was the narration that changed things for me. Allan Corunder did such a phenomenal job in the first book. His voices were so riveting, entertaining, enchanting - it was hard for any of us to put the book down. This second narrator was okay - and that was it - just okay. I almost felt as if I needed to reacquaint myself with some of the characters, who seemed totally different than in the first book (example, Marcia was so solid and funny and quirky with her fascinating purple shoes in the first book; in the second, she seemed inept and downright irritating at times - and that to me really stemmed from the narration, not the writing). I miss Mr. Corunder's hilarious interpretations, and I wish I could hear him narrate for all the books. As it is, I'm not sure I'll go on with the series. There certainly isn't a delicious anticipation to get to the next in the series as there was in the first. - A bit of a letdown.

Fun Listen

I really enjoyed the first book of the series, and it threw me for a loop when they switched narrators. I really enjoy Gerard Doyle, however, I had just finished the Eragon books he narrated and it was a little strange hearing the characters' voices from another series in this one. I would have given this book 4.5 stars because of that. However, the story itself, is fun and entertaining. And as always, I was looking for a book with no vulgarity or inappropriate language for very young children, yet interesting enough for me. This series definitely fulfill those requirements.

Excellent - Little Gem

My son and I have enjoyed this series alot in the car and at home. Its a pleasure to hear or read something not truely predictedable to the letter. We fell in love with the first book and haven't looked back. We are looking for Sept's new adventures in the next one too. We hope you enjoy this little fun trip into fantasy like we do for our thrid time this year ;-)

Actually Abridged

Is there anything you would change about this book?

There is one huge thing I would change about the book - I would include the narration for "What Happened Before . . . "! The Afterwords, for lack of a better term, are one of the more creative elements in Angie Sage's Septimus Heap series. I was looking forward to listening to it.

What other book might you compare Flyte to and why?

In some ways, Septimus Heap is a battle of magical good and evil in the vein of Harry Potter. However, where J.K. Rowling's novels become increasingly more mature as her characters and her readers aged, Septimus Heap remains age appropriate for younger readers throughout the series.

Tim Curry, The Voice

If you're only familiar with Peter Pan from Disney or the last movie, you owe it to yourself and your kids to listen to the book that started it all. And this is the version you want.

Tim Curry is a wonderful narrator; his voice of Hook alone will give you shivers and goose-bumps. It's the penultimate pirate voice.

If I were still a kid, in bed, wanting to be read to, this is one of the voices I'd most want to listen to.

He also does the 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' books, by the way.

Simply wonderful

Tim Curry breathes life into this wonderful classic children's story. His voice gives such warm, comic expression to the snooty grown-ups, the treacherous-yet-stumbling pirates, the pouty fairy Tinkerbell, the nervous or excited children, and of course, the cheeky, indignant Peter Pan. Even if you're intimately familiar with the story, Curry's telling is memorable and well worth the listen.

It soars ...

Peter Pan was one of the first books I downloaded from Audible (the version read by Donal Donnelly). It was so bad a recording that I was questioning the wisdom of my 2-book-a-month commitment.

Fortunately, that disappointment has not been encountered again. And here was an absolutely divine recording of this classic story (if you only know Peter Pan from Disney, you owe it to J.M. Barrie, and yourself, to give a listen).

Tim Curry does a brilliant job reading the story, and the recording is -- in all other ways -- first rate. I'd not listened to other Curry reads, but after this I'll be looking carefully at anything that has been or might be released with his narration.

Bravo Bravo Bravo

A terrific story, well read

Like many, this book is much different and better than the Disney version that the kids were familiar with. The book is wonderful for kids (ours are 6 and 9), but also sneaks in some great lines just for the adults. And the narration by Tim Curry is outstanding - he really makes the book. We didn't listen to any other version, but I can't imagine a better narrator. Buy this.

Not just for Kids!

Tim Curry is sublime. Could there be any better narrator for Peter Pan than Tim Curry? I think not. This is a wonderful story with a wonderful performance that you can and will want to listen to it over and over again.

Wonderful emotional layers. My 9 Yo granddaughter appreciated the emotional connections. Her favorite piece of the story was the realization of dad and son having each other. They both missed mom but they had each other. They were not alone in their feelings of loss.

Crispin the Cross of Lead is an outstanding book. It's about a 13-year-old boy in England during the Middle Ages. In the beginning his mother dies and gives him a cross made of lead which proves to have special meaning. The story is filled with twists, turns and great descriptions. This book may be difficult for kids who don't understand the dialogue of the Middle Ages, yet you can learn a great deal about what life was like during that time period. You really find out about how religious everyone was in the Middle Ages. Ron Keith did such a great job reading the book I felt like I was running right along next to Crispin. I loved the book so much I'm going to read the sequel. I recommend this to anyone looking for an exciting and adventurous book.

If you could sum up Crispin in three words, what would they be?

Honorable, courageous, intelligent

What did you like best about this story?

The way Avi was able to not only bring the characters to life but to describe the times they were living in very well. It was well researched and the characters are great. The bad guy oozes bad and the good guys are great but flawed. Often, that is the way real heroes are.

Which scene was your favorite?

Crispin entering the castle and finding John Aycliffe who shows his lack of character, lack of honor and cowardice all in that one scene. The ending is pretty good too.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and I did. I will no doubt do it again in the future as well. This is one of my all time favorite books.

Any additional comments?

These books are fantastic. Yes, they are supposed to be for kid and when i was first recommended this book I said "It is Crispin and the CROSS of Lead and I am Jewish so no thanks" and threw in "it's also for kids and what do you know, I am an adult" (yes I am very sarcastic LOL) but it was so highly recommended I thought "ok fine fine fine" and enjoyed it. Then when I got the audiobook it was like entering the world rather than just reading about it. Ron Keith brings Avi's words to life. I think adults would like this book just as much and maybe more so than kids.

I sure wish they would make this into a movie already.

Excellent voice actor character adaptations and a story with many profound life lessons. This was assigned reading for my son, and he thought the book was boring until we started listening to this audible as he read along in the book. It really helped bring the book to life for our young reader!

Amazingly rich

This audio version of Crispin was extremely well done. The voice over captured our entire family. It exceeded our expectations!

In the top ten of my favorite audible stories! The series sucks you in so completely! My son is replaying the series because he enjoys it so much !

Fantastic! Great intro of the mother. The ending leaves a wonderful opening for a continued saga. Hoping that Suzanne Collins keeps the plot alive.

What did you love best about Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods?

Suzanne Collins really brings the story alive. I love the way she developed the characters in each book. She also introduces new characters in each new book. I am sad when she kills off her characters that she convinced the reader to love.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods?

The cliff hanger at the end. It made me want to purchase the next book right away.

Have you listened to any of Paul Boehmers other performances before? How does this one compare?

Only in the series. He has a good range of voices to fit the variety of characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Hamnet and Frill died.

keeps me interested for the entire book - I listen to the books whilst driving - cant wait for my next road trip!

fantastic difference voices for all the characters - big fan.

This story and its' characters will always be some of my favorites. It is easy to get lost in the adventures and the atmosphere of the Underland.

I listened to the first book because I enjoyed Collins other books. Once finished, I couldn't wait to follow the characters to their next adventure.
