If you dream about sailing the world this is a MUST read. Even more so if you are an animal lover. Rosemary has a comfortable way of writing that made me feel as if we were sharing a pot of tea, while she enthralled me with their fascinating, witty and touching stories of their travels around the world.....all woven around daily life at sea with with a rambunctious little Jack Russell.

This story of two intrepid sailors and their little dog had me totally enthralled. Their little Jack Russell, Tara, got herself into so many "Fixes", I had to catch my breath. Rosemary and her husband must certainly be the most capable people. I was amazed at how self sufficient you need to be to live for years on board a sailboat.

A timeless big picture of how we got to today's science of genetics

Excellent, easy to understand explanation of how chromosomes function, and the details about how genes code for proteins that are essential to our bodies. He explains how genes turn on and off during our lifetime for various reasons and how this can affect our health. While it's a book about biology, I was impressed with how it does not read like one. The book was first published in 1999, and while the extensive research he discusses was conducted before that, and the science of genetics subsequently advanced; by and large the basic science he presents is still applicable because of how he presents each concept. From a historical perspective, he discusses what is now seen as groundbreaking experiments that established the field of genetics in the mid to late 20th century - without fully realizing it from today's viewpoint. It's good insight to the ground floor of the largest expanding field of science in our lifetime.

Interesting but slightly misleading title

Although ostensibly about DNA and the human genome, it is actually more of a philosophical view of the human condition using a handful of genes as examples of the way us naked apes function, mentally, physically, emotionally, even socially. The book thankfully does not often get heavily into the deep scientific aspects of DNA research.

For the most part, an entertaining book written in a generally engaging manner. As mentioned elsewhere, it is a bit uneven. Sometimes Mr. Ridley had to really reach to come up with a gene that he could write about, or enough to say about it to pad the article out to chapter length. Somewhere around chromosome 17 or 18, I don't know if he started running out of steam or I did. Don't try to read the whole thing continuously; take a few days off between chapters, you'll find it easier to maintain enthusiasm.

An exhilarating tour of the genome.

I would give the book 4.5 stars. With a Masters degree in molecular biology, I was able to understand all (well, nearly all) of the biological, evolutionary and genetic concepts introduced and discussed in the book. However, I surmise that someone without a degree/knowledge of biology, and in particular molecular genetics, some concepts in the book may be slightly difficult to understand fully.

However, having said that, Matt Ridley is an outstanding writer. He makes dry topics sound interesting, stimulating and geniuinely exciting - all of which makes the book a page turner. He does a very good, albeit not flawless, job of explaining biological/genetic concepts for the laymen.

Well researched, well written. Funny in places, fascinating, earnest. Like my dogs

I've studied animal behavior formally and in a more casual, observational manner all my life. In college, I was shocked by the professional attitude that animals were devoid of personality traits, functioning merely on base instincts. Anyone who has truly shared their life with a dog, cat, horse or bird knows that is a false belief. (Having a back yard dog you don't interact with is not sharing a life)

I'm happy to learn from this book that portions of the scientific community are finally catching up to reality. Animals do react and behave in predictable ways based on instinct and need, but so do humans. Yet in the midst of that are individuals with differing temperaments, differing levels of intelligence, and different desires... animals and humans aren't all that far apart at the heart of things. I was surprised to learn that spiders have been studied intensely to determine causation of specific behaviors and individualism.

Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Gonads but Were Afraid to Ask

Liam Drew has written an absolutely fascinating book about mammals, from the duck-billed platypus to human beings. He fills us in on the evolution of mammals, telling us what earlier scientists assumed â correctly and incorrectly â and explains things like why some mammals â opossums, for instance - have gonads in front of their members instead of behind them. And elephants - theirs do not hang low, but are internal, as are several other mammals.â And why are ours external? Thatâs a debate that continues to rage. And itâs fascinating.

I Mammal is written with intelligence, wit, and humor. It informs us about the evolution of milk, teeth, and all the other things that make us mammals. We learn about our warm-bloodedness, the evolution of our senses, and how our brains work. We find out what we have in common with other mammals, from cetaceans to horses to wolves and everything in between. Fun Read if you like Mammalian Biology

This is a fun read if you like reading and learning about mammalian biology at a higher level accessible to most people. Starting with why human males might have external scrotums. I think a lot of people don't understand evolution via natural selection and also what makes mammals what they are, but this book addresses that in a fun to read format. It isn't a boring text book or scientific paper. It is a book you can pick up casually and read.

One of the things I learned from the book was just how few species of mammals there are relative to other forms of life like insects. It is also fun to learn about the platypus.

Not what I expected

I am one of those people who love animals (especially dogs) more than I do most people so I was really drawn to this book. I thought it would be another warm fuzzy, light read kind of book that I'd speed through but it ended up being more cerebral, in-depth and educational than I expected and I really enjoyed reading it. It had so many facts about the history of pets that I had no idea about before reading this book. I kept reading parts of it out loud to my spouse because I'd find it so interesting.

I'm glad I got a chance to read it and for me it exceeded my expectations. For some others though I can see the potential for it not meeting them because the cover and title (at least to me) does give off the impression of a lighter read than it is.

Inspiring

A very interesting and inspiring book. I have learnt a huge amount about the amazing animals we share the world with.

Cute but not so deap

I enjoyed the book. But its mainly based on the authors observations. I was hoping the book would go a little deeper into the subjects.

I think the audiobook was read a little fast for my taste. So I was disappointed that the book was read by someone else than the tree book, which was lovely.
