I didn't look to see that this publication is from ...

I didn't look to see that this publication is from 2002. A lot has changed since then so this is very outdated. Basic information is okay but still far behind times and is only about 150 pages. Certainly not worth the price.

Technical but good

I am not a native NW'ner and since the eruption of Mt. St. Helen's I have been interested in the "restlessness" of this area and I learned a lot from reading this book. It's scary but reality sometimes can do that.

I couldn't put this book down.

I admit that geology interests me but even I was surprised that this book was hard to put down. What a story! I couldn't wait to find out what happened next to this complex landscape. Hill Williams tells the story in an easy to read, easy to understand prose, not an easy feat given the subject. Congratulations to Mr. Hill on a job very well done. What a great book!

Understandable overview of Northwest geological history

I bought this for my 93 year old mother, hoping that it would not be written in so technical a manner that she could not understand it. This augments another book I bought recently about the geological history of the world, and has helped field her many questions about the nature of the mountains and rocks she has seen in our Northwest states. She loves it.

Concise and comprehensive

I found this book to be concise and yet very comprehensive. The author presents the subject objectively and touches on the many aspects of the challenges ahead. In the end I found myself more optimistic about our chances of reversing the damages already done to the enviornment and I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about how we got to this point and maybe more importantly what we can do to remedy the damages.

Balanced, Concise and Well-Reasoned

I am well-read on this topic yet I found new perspectives and useful facts throughout. It is a balanced discussion of a complex topic presented in a concise and well-written manner. It would be useful in a classroom or as a springboard to exploring the issues with a friend. The concluding chapter on the moral obligation of responding to climate change was particularly pivotal and moving for me.

This is a fast-moving treatment of a difficult subject, that relies on no-nonsense science while being written in language everyone can understand.

fantastico

al di là della bellezza incredibile del contenuto, mi è piaciuta estremamente l'interpretazione del narratore italiano. solitamente sono abituato a leggere ed ascoltare in inglese, ma, notando che in inglese chiedi e ti sarà dato è suddiviso in due libri, ho acquistato la versione in italiano, rimanendone piacevolmente sorpreso. mi auguro che il signor Rovanotti decide di interpretare altri libri di Abram.

Lynda Mapes is a master storyteller and brings her talent to describing climate change science in a way that a. a. Milne would envy. I listened, I marveled, I understood. I came to care about that tree, that mighty oak in the Harvard (100 acre) Wood. I need a hard copy now, so I can make love notes in the margins.

The Archetype of Declensionist Environmental History

Dust Bowl is an undeniable classic of environmental history. Donald Worsterâs synthesis of ecology and social history set a precedent for the burgeoning field when the book was published in 1979. And as a document of âone of the worstâ ecological blunders in historyâ (p. 4), Dust Bowl reads like a necessary cautionary tale from a wise elder.

Yet, for all its thorough analysis, vivid imagery, and scholarly importance, Dust Bowl is often distractingly heavy-handed (Mind youâthis review is coming from as staunch an environmentalist as you will meet.). It is telling that the bookâs introductory quote comes from Karl Marx, with whom Worster shared a penchant for historical fatalism. Turn-of-the-century capitalism, Worster would argue, was (and in many ways still is) on a collision course with the natural limits of ecology, and this inevitable disaster manifested most clearly in the âGreat American Desertâ (p. 81) during the 1930s. But the notion of Culture, to which Worster points as the explanatory variable in our downfallâvariously, a âcapitalist ethosâ (p. 96), or a set of âbourgeois valuesâ (p. 136)âleaves no room for human agency and leaves this reader wondering: Are we looking at the issue critically or just commiserating? At best, Worsterâs line of reasoning is accurate but extremely depressing. At worst, it is nihilistic and somewhat offensive (Note how often he uses the word âclingâ in regards to traditional practices.). Indeed, Worster cautions in his preface that his argument âwill not be acceptable to many plainsmenâ (p. vii). I would take that sentiment further and suggest that it may not be acceptable to really anyone who has hope for the future.

Since the publication of Dust Bowl, environmental historians have been engaged in a delicate tap dance with the most pressing issue facing our species: environmental degradation.

An unexplored side of the climate fight

What did you like best about this story?

It was an angle that I hadn't given much thought to and had always viewed activism from the perspective of the supposed front lines. This has broadened my knowledge of the importance of the law when it comes to accountability and the fact that there are people willing to give their time for less pay for the general public is something to be celebrated.

A brilliantly written insight in to law for the environment

This book gives a great broad view of how law can be used as one major weapon against climate change.

Its given me a great understanding of where we are today and where the flaws are still like enforcement.

For anyone who cares about the environment this is crucial reading.

And so well written too that some big topics are broken down so that the book stays a light and enjoyable read throughout!

Less about trees, more about gender and ethnicity

Thought this was going to be about trees, turned out to be a lecture about why being white is bad, especially if you're male. Most of the facts in this book are of questionable reliability.
