    helpful and accurate
My Gradmother is from Okinawa Japan she confirmed the accuracy of the information. Verry Helpful.
A collection of material on Japan that could easily be found on the web!
Disappointed that the text seems so out of date, even though this is supposed to be a revised addition. Written from the perspective of someone who has collated third hand information. The statistics seem a little out of date - 40 % of marriages are arranged. Im in Japan as I write this review. His review of train travel also out of date. Better off searching the web than buying this book. It was a let down!

    Very interesting book!
I haven't read the complete book yet but have scanned thru different sections and had a hard time putting it down. Will start at the beginning now read completely. I have enjoyed reading about the different customs in the home, business and public settings which are very interesting. I have always wanted to visit Norway and this book just makes me want to visit even more. I would highly recommend this book for anyone traveling to Norway or even if you just wanted to gain knowledge about Norway's culture and geography.
    Informative
    Informative and enjoyable. Great book.
    Very Helpful
Helpful introduction into Norway, its people and its customs.
    extremely helpful
I am relocating to Oslo and have been reading several books to gain a better understand of the country. I found this book extremely helpful.
this was a good traveling companion
I enjoyed the trivia and it was a practical value of this guide. I'd get it on real paper instead of the Kindle version because I found it hard to navigate on the Kindle. I give it 3 stars because I think the price is too high for the value it has to offer.

    Publisher's Summary:
Andrew Zimmern, the host of The Travel Channel's hit series Bizarre Foods, has an extraordinarily well-earned reputation for traveling far and wide to seek out and sample anything and everything that's consumed as food globally, from cow vein stew in Bolivia and giant flying ants in Uganda to raw camel kidneys in Ethiopia, putrefied shark in blood pudding in Iceland, and Wolfgang Puck's Hunan-style rooster balls in Los Angeles. For Zimmern, local cuisine - bizarre, gross or downright stomach turning as it may be to us - is not simply what's served at mealtime. It is a primary avenue to discovering what is most authentic - the bizarre truth - about cultures everywhere.

    Title: Travelling to Work
    Subtitle: Diaries 1988-1998
    Author: Michael Palin
    Narrator: Michael Palin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 23 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-11-14
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Travelling to Work is the third volume of Michael Palin's widely acclaimed diaries. After the Python years and a decade of filming, writing and acting, Palin's career takes an unexpected direction into travel, which will shape his working life for the next 25 years. Yet, as the diaries reveal, he remained ferociously busy on a host of other projects throughout this whirlwind period.
Travelling to Work opens in September 1988 with Michael travelling down the Adriatic on the first leg of a modern-day Around the World in 80 Days. He was not the BBC's first choice for the series, but after its success and that of the accompanying book, the public naturally wanted more. Palin, though, has other plans.
Following the tumultuous success of A Fish Called Wanda, he is in demand as an actor. His next film, American Friends, is based on his great-grandfather's diaries. Next he takes on his most demanding role as the head teacher in Alan Bleasdale's award-winning drama series GBH. There is also his West End play, The Weekend, and a first novel, Hemingway's Chair, and a lead role in Fierce Creatures, the much-delayed follow-up to Wanda.
Michael describes himself as 'drawn to risk like a moth to a flame. Someone grounded and safe who can be tempted into almost anything.' He duly finds time for two more travel series, Pole to Pole, in 1991; Full Circle, in 1996; and two more best-selling books to accompany them.
These latest Diaries show a man grasping every opportunity that came his way, and they deal candidly with the doubts and setbacks that accompany this prodigious word-rate. As ever, his family life, with three children growing up fast, is there to anchor him.
Travelling to Work is a roller-coaster ride driven by the Palin hallmarks of curiosity and sense of adventure. These 10 years in different directions offer riches on every page to his ever-growing army of fans.

    Wounderfull
I have really enjoyed listening to all of Micheal Palin's diaries, the way he reads makes me feels he reading just for me and that we are good friends (sadly we are not). I would recommend all 3 volumes to any one with a passing interest in British comedy, TV and Film.
Sometimes sad sometimes very funny but always engaging. A great listen.
I enjoyed all the Michael Palin travel series and read his previous memoirs so thought I'd get this. Travelling to work brings together his thoughts about his travels and merges them with a thread of Python reminiscences, his work on films and some really difficult personal moments. He's just such an interesting bloke to listen to. Sometimes sad sometimes very funny but always engaging. A great listen! Don't get put off by the first 20 minutes. It gets better when he gets into his flow.
Unremittingly nice and lots of lovies
Would you listen to Travelling to Work again? Why?
Once was enough. Indeed by the end I'd had enough and realized I should have listened to it in parts with breaks. While it is fun to hear snippets about this person and that person, I can only take so many references to meeting this celebrity or that celebrity.
Would you recommend Travelling to Work to your friends? Why or why not?
    Yes.

    Critic Reviews:
"Tougias balances human and technical detail to create the best book of its kind since Sebastian Jungier's The Perfect Storm." (Booklist)
"Tougias delivers a well researched, vividly written tale of brave men overwhelmed by the awesome forces of nature. An absorbing account." (Publishers Weekly)

    A riveting story
Those of us who grew up during, and remember well, the winter of 1977-78 in the Midwest and Northeast, were amazed by the snow that kept on falling the last week of January and first week of February 1978. No doubt, we were all tuned to our radios and TVs waiting for the school closure announcements. This true story brings to life one of the unfortunate side effects that came with the snowfront.
The author did extensive research and interviews with many of the people who were on board the USCG ships, as well as the radio men, and the loved ones of the Can Do's crew. Much like a Ken Burns film, you hope history will turn out differently than it did.
    This recording has three gems:
    1) Great narration that gives character to the people portrayed;
    2) The author's notes about the book's evolution; and
    3) Actual recordings of some the radio transmissions of the boats and radio operators that are at the core of the story.
    Highly recommended!
    Highly Recomended
Excellent book. The final section with the actual radio transmissions of the Can-do and shore bases put one INTO the tragedy where other sea stories, such as "Perfect Storm" are unable to compare. There is little need for poetic license here.
Though there are sections whee the narrator didn't interpret the writing all that well, the writing is strong, informative, anad since I was IN this book, I can attest that it is painfully accurate.

Good Book Reminds Us of What is Important
I read the reviews about this book and some were not very nice. But I listened to it anyway and enjoyed it very much. If accents are not exact and places are not pronounced correctly, it doesn't really matter. What matters is learning about the lives of all these people and what they endured. And not forgetting this story. This story reminds me to tell people in my life everyday that I love them. That is what is important. At the end of this recording the author tells how he came to write this story, very moving.
    Frightening
As one who has fished around Marblehead, and Beverly harbors and grew up and lobster fished in all seasons in Nahant, the book wes especally frightening and realistic. A great listen and well done!
    WOW!
Even though I knew what the out come was going to be I found myself hoping and wishing things would end differently, A well written, enjoyable listen.

    A safe bet!
I was first introduced to Bill Bryson, and first read Down Under during a 2 year holiday in the UK (I am Australian). It has been a long time since then and I thought this would be a great book to revisit and to cut my teeth on Audible as a new subscriber. The book was a great laugh and Bill portrays Australians and Australia in a way that makes me want to go there! :)
    great read
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

His diction and clearity of voice
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Just pure interest
    Any additional comments?

Very funny, entertaining , please Bill stay with an American accent, your Australian could cause a diplomatic incident, loved the book
    Got it Right Mate
This is an extremely insightful, very funny journey through a magnificent continent. Bryson captures the essence of the Australian landscape and the characters that make it a singularly extraordinary place to travel and live. I acknowledge his outstanding penmanship and appreciate his honest humour and natural affinity for all that is quirky. Well read and captivating. Well done.
    Bryson Books Need Bryson Narration
I love Bill Bryson's writing, really I do. His books, audiobooks included, are some of my favourite and most revisited. And Down Under is a great book that is wholly ruined by the narrator, a whiny, pinch-voiced man who manages to take Bryson's wit and give it an air of smugness, sometimes bordering on spite. I don't know if I just despised the narrator because he was awful or because he was so utterly unsuitable to read Bryson. It doesn't help that he attempts accents and can't do them, making both English and Australian voices grating and high-pitched.
Honestly, the narrator ruins the book, but if you want this or several of Bryson's other, earlier, books, then this is the standard you get. I loathe abridged books but at least they're read by the man himself.

Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
"The tale of Carl Wake and the hurricane that was waiting for him goes straight to the heart of the greatest sea stories: they are not about man against the sea, but man against himself. John Kretschmer's audiobook is as perfectly shaped and flawlessly written as such a story can be. In addition to being the best depiction I have ever listened to of what it is like to be inside a hurricane at sea, At the Mercy of the Sea is as moving a story of a man's failure and redemption as can be found anywhere in the literature of the sea. This audiobook is surely destined to become a classic." (Peter Nichols, author of Sea Change and A Voyage for Madmen).
"John Kretschmer has transformed this story of three men on a collision course with a hurricane into a modern seafaring classic." (Peter Nielsen, editor of SAIL magazine).
"With expert analysis and taut writing, he draws listeners into that mad storm. You can't turn away. You keep listening until it breaks your heart." (Fred Grimm, columnist for the Miami Herald).
"Once begun, his vivid and powerful narrative is impossible to stop listening." (Derek Lundy, author of Godforsaken Sea and The Way of a Ship).
"I felt I knew Carl Wake, because John Kretschmer found in him an archetype - an aging sailor with an age-old dream." (Jim Carrier, transatlantic sailor and author of The Ship and the Storm: Hurricane Mitch and the Loss of the Fantome).
"A remarkable audiobook, impossible to stop listening to." (Herb McCormick, sailing journalist).

    Newbie/Novice Sailor: Book review
    Constructive Criticism:
I didn't really think the jumping around was necessary-- I understand the plot and reasoning behind the continuous stories for several angles-- however-- I would have preferred like TV shows and sitcoms that have -- they have physical fade in/ fade out between the rotating segments. I was left with the impression we were constantly jumping from timeline to timeline-- never knowing if we were picking up from where we left off-- or starting yet another 'viewpoint' and or 'time stamped' story...
Positives: loved the experience and real life research and contributions to the story about the main characters-- while sad, the story and or ghost writer brought you in closer to the characters and sold them to you lock, stock and barrel...
Great realistic stories about a sailors dream of making it to the horizon-- but falling short in preparations and or redundancies- making both the sailors and vessels subject to wrath and unforgiving nature of the sea-- she is not a respecter of persons... Enjoyed the book and would enjoy listening to another from John K.
Three separate stories told at the same time
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. It is three completely separate stories but the author tells a little of each at a time and then continues telling another story.

    Title: One Dry Season
Subtitle: In the Footsteps of Mary Kingsley
    Author: Caroline Alexander
    Narrator: Lisette Lecat
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-12-12
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
With richly evocative images and wonderfully entertaining anecdotes, Caroline Alexander transports you to the dense interior of equatorial Gabon. In One Dry Season, she chronicles her adventures as she makes her way alone through dangerously primitive territory.
When she first read of Victorian explorer Mary Kingsleys travels in the French colony of Gabon, Alexander knew she had to experience the present-day nation for herself. Soon she is retracing Kingsleys route - struggling through tangled vines in humid rain forests, chugging up the churning Ogooué River in a packed steamer, and fending off gigantic cockroaches. The country she discovers is a challenging mixture of Africas exotic past and its practical present.
A splendid storyteller, Caroline Alexander introduces you to the colorful new friends she made along the trail, including a shy mission nun, a half-mad French woman, and a village chief who treated her as an errant teenaged daughter. Lisette Lecats expert narration brings out all the excitement of todays Africa.
    Members Reviews:
How much can one say about Gabon?
I haven't read Kingsley's book, but admire Alexander's planning in following the literary trail she left behind. Still, if you're expecting historical footsteps as the primary focus here, it doesn't quite work that way. Roughly half of the book is a modern travel narrative, having little or nothing to do with Kingsley, which was fine by me, but that writer's fans may find the footsteps angle a bit thin. Also, Alexander spends a fair amount of time on a side story of a missionary physician whom Kingsley had met on her journey. Overall, a pleasant read, where not much really happens of note - no wildly challenging monkey wrenches typical of other African adventures: she goes places (some Kingsley-related, others not), meets people, reports what she finds, and moves on to the next location. Lecat's narration came across as a bit more ... patrician, and seems a bit more mature, than I'd expected of Alexander herself, giving the story the air of a Womens' Institute talk from local gentry; however, as there aren't really any truly dramatic moments, that wasn't such a bad fit.
