    Title: The Gold of Exodus
Subtitle: The Discovery of the Real Mount Sinai
    Author: Howard Blum
    Narrator: Boyd Gaines
    Format: Abridged
Length: 4 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-26-10
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 14 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
In this heart-pounding adventure, award-winning journalist and best-selling author Howard Blum tells the enthralling story of two modern-day adventurers - Larry Williams, a self-made millionaire and published author from Montana, and his friend Bob Cornuke, a retired policeman and former SWAT team member. Lured by the prospect of finding a fortune in gold, the two men set out to find the true site of Mount Sinai - with the Old Testament as a guide.
The stunning discoveries made at the mountain in Saudi Arabia known as Jabal al Lawz will astonish the world - and change the way we view it. What Williams and Cornuke found was compelling evidence of the stone altar at which the Golden Calf was worshipped, the twelve pillars that Moses ordered to be erected, and, most sensationally, the unnaturally scorched spot on the mountaintop where God gave Moses the two stone tablets.
This action-packed tale - part high-tech treasure hunt, part modern-day spy thriller, and part biblical detective story - is riveting. And it is all true.

    an excellent story well told
This was a great story. I had heard parts of it before, but the added details and historical backdrop really kept me listening.
    Very Interesting
The story is based on facts and I found it very exciting, it made sense if you know your history, and even somewhat your bible. You too will enjoy this book because it is all base on a true investigation. It would make a very good movie. A real life, Indianan Jones adventure for real. When I heard the story for the first time it was on Tape, and I couldn't stop listening, now I have down loaded it to my new I pod Touch and look forward to hearing it again. Movie producers, this is a good story to turn into your next block buster.

From the authors of the number-one best-selling The Sea Hunters comes more unforgettable true adventures with famous shipwrecks.
    ©2003 Clive Cussler; (P)2003 Penguin
    Critic Reviews:
"In this fast-paced narrative that doesn't tinker with the earlier Sea Hunters' successful formula, Cussler and his teams search for 300 years' worth of wrecks as varied as La Salle's 17th-century flagship, a dirigible lost in a storm off the New Jersey coast in 1933 and the famous PT-109. Cussler traveled along the coast of Texas, up the Mississippi River and to the jungles of the South Pacific in search of historically important wrecks of all sorts. Cussler first provides the historical background for each tragedy (sometimes inventing dialogue when there are no survivors to interview), then dives into his own adventures." (Publishers Weekly)

Great searches for sunken ships of history!
I decided to read this book while looking for some adventurous reads to share with my teen grandsons, and to my great surprise, I loved everything about the book! Definitely sharing with all three grandsons!
This book is a great blend of historical fiction , telling about various real sea vessels and sea airplanes that ended their lives in crashes. NUMA is an organization that is mostly funded by adventure author, Clive Clussler. It's mission is to find and salvage these sea vessels for history.
Two of the most famous vessels written about were Kennedy's PT 109, and the Carpathia, the ship first on the scene after the Titanic sank. All the stories were fascinating, and the many expaditions to find and authenticate the wreckages were even more fascinating. I'd recommend this book for everyone who likes adventure and history!
    excellen listening

    Title: Following the Equator
Subtitle: A Journey around the World
    Author: Mark Twain
    Narrator: Michael Kevin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 20 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-02-09
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 61 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
This vivid chronicle of a sea voyage on the Pacific Ocean displays Twain's eye for the unusual, his wide-ranging curiosity, and his delight in embellishing the facts. The personalities of the ship's crew and passengers, the poetry of Australian place-names, the success of women's suffrage in New Zealand, an account of the Sepoy Mutiny, and reflections on the Boer War as an expression of imperialistic morality, among other topics, are the focus of his wry humor and redoubtable powers of observation.
Following the Equator is an evocative and highly unique American portrait of 19-century travel and customs.

Onae of Mark Twain's least characteristic books
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Written at a time when Mark Twain was troubled by the recent death of his favorite daughter, severe financial problems, and concerns about his own health, this book is very different from his earlier travel books. It draws heavily on other writers' books, to which Mark Twain adds his own comments. These are often humorous, but humor is not the book's chief attraction. The book offers fascinating descriptions of Australia, New Zealand, British India, and South Africa during the 1890s and is worth reading for that reason alone.
What aspect of Michael Kevins performance would you have changed?
In general, Kevin's performance is fine. However, his ability to pronounce unfamiliar names and words breaks down toward the end of the book. How is it possible that a professional reader pronounces "uitlander" oot-land-er? More incredible, he pronounces the simple German name "Beit" (as in English "bite") "bee-it"! His pronunciation of African names is generally shaky, but pronouncing "Matabele" (mah-tah-bay-lay) "MAH-tab-u-lah" is over the top.As one well familiar with that word, I winced painfully every time Kevin botched the pronunciation. Hearing such gaffes once is bad enough, but when they are repeated, they become unbearable. One would think a professional reader would do better.
Could you see Following the Equator being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No. Why are such questions even being asked here? Is it necessary to dumb down everything on the web?
    Any additional comments?
In the absence of any other recording of FOLLOWING THE EQUATOR, Michael Kevin's version is perfectly acceptable. I'm sure I'll listen to it again some time.
The way it used to be...
This book is not quite as good as The Innocents Abroad, which is another Twain travel book, but it is nevertheless interesting. Twain as always gives us humor, and he gives us interesting details of life in the places he visits...the callous disregard for the lives of others, casual murder for the thrill of it, is described in detail regarding India, the scene of the awful events.
You will be entertained, and you will be surprised at the way of life in other countries a century ago. And you will hope that some of it has changed since then.
    Twain's last tour
Michael Kevin does a great job narrating Mark Twain's last travel book. Twain had gone bankrupt and needed to go on a world-wide lecture tour to recover financially. Here he recounts the journey to San Francisco, and from there to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa.

    Publisher's Summary:
Whether Randy Van Schmus is out in the field with his students, or grinding rock in the university lab, he insists the flat plains of middle America are anything but dull. He tells the story of eons of violent upheaval that is written in the features lying far below the shimmering wheat fields. As he shares how scientists are unlocking the secrets of the earth's timetable, millions of years seem but brief moments.
John McPhee's enthusiasm and peerless writing style make the study of geology both accessible and entertaining. And Nelson Runger's thought-provoking performance ensures you will view the earth with fresh insight.
    Critic Reviews:
"McPhee's many fans won't be disappointed with the high-quality descriptive portraits of geologists, their work, and theories." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    End of McPhee's Annals
What I absolutely love about McPhee's nonfiction is his ability to write about place, people and ideas with both beautiful prose and amazing intimacy. My favorite parts are where McPhee weaves place and people, or people and ideas together and establishes the grand metaphor for his book. McPhee picks up pieces of conversation, and stray facts, from these amazing geologists and their satelites that might get missed by most other writers, but manages to find, keep and eventually place these nuggets into his book (written over 20 years) in a way that works to support his big themes.
Seriously, this book is one of my favorite nonfiction works of all time. You can see the mark McPhee left on his students' writing if you've ever read Robert Wright, Richard Preston or New Yorker editor David Remnick. Some consider (McPhee would flunk me for such vague, nonattributable writing I'm sure) McPhee to be the godfather of New New Journalism, but he is much more than that. IMHO, he is the godfather on modern nonfiction writing, period.
That being said, this is the last of the series, and the weakest piece of the book (and also the weakest piece of geology). So, if you are new to McPhee, or interested in listening to 'Annals of the Former World', this is the soft and permeable end. Start wtih 'Basin and Range' >next> 'In Suspect Terrain' >next> 'Rising from the Plains' >next> 'Assembling California' >next>'Crossing the Craton'.
Just beware Audible lists 'Crossing the Craton' as book 4, but it is really Book 5 because for whatever reason Book 4 ('Assembling California') has "separated" from main body of "Annals of the Former World'. California geology writing is just as mysterious as California's people and geology, I guess.

    Publisher's Summary:
This behind-the-scenes look at how the first programmes were made reveals moments of hardship on horseback, canoe, and in a wreck of a jeep through swamp, desert, and rainforest. Attenborough tells of danger on the crew's hazardous boat trip with a gun-smuggling captain and the terror of erupting volcanoes.
He also depicts for the listener some of the incredible sights he and his team witnessed, breathtaking butterflies, taking tea with Charlie the orangutan, and the voyage to the little-known island of Komodo to capture the elusive Komodo Dragon. David Attenborough's early adventures are sometimes life-threatening, often hilarious, and always totally absorbing. The warmth and enthusiasm that have made him a broadcasting legend are instantly apparent here as he recounts this magical journey.

    Attenborough Begins
A completely charming and thoroughly interesting look at Sir David Attenborough's beginnings with the BBC in 1952. The making of nature films in exotic and difficult locations around the world were only part of the task for Attenborough and his colleagues; they also had to sell their ideas for a wildlife television show to the BBC. The story about the search for the Komodo Dragon is very entertaining, and his narration is flawless, of course. Highly recommended.

    Publisher's Summary:
At more than a 100 feet deep in the frigid Gulf of St. Lawrence, diving the Empress is like trying to navigate an unfamiliar 60-story building lying on its side at a 45-degree angle, in pitch blackness with only a flashlight. In Dark Descent, Kevin McMurray takes us deep into the bowels of the lost ship, first to relive her tragic death and then to join the divers who have probed the wreck's secrets. It's an adventure from which some divers don't return.
    Critic Reviews:
"The book is impressively researched...and, for those who love the lure of the deep water and the mysteries of shipwrecks, this specialized history will be a pleasure." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Poor Descent
This story of the Empress of Ireland is captivating for content, but poorly presented here. The narrator, reading this like headline news, makes this almost impossible to listen to. The story of the wreck is very interesting, but the writer seemed unable to tell the story without exaggeration or hyperbole.
As a diver, I understand the dangers in technical diving and the lure of dangerous wrecks. Wreck divers are highly trained and dedicated to safety. The story of many of these divers is just the opposite. Poorly trained, ignoring basic safety rules, there is a reason many of these die or get hurt in exploring the Empress. The Empress of Ireland has caused numerous deaths both in the sinking and through the mistakes of divers since. However, the author tries to make a dive to 140 feet seem like it is climbing Mount Everest. There are many times in listening to this book I had to remind myself that these divers were not free diving the Titanic but rather a relatively shallow wreck. In fact sport divers routinely make dives to these depths. What makes the Empress so dangerous is the extreme cold, the currents and limited visibility. The real story is the tragedy of ill equipped divers putting themselves in situations they for which they were unprepared. Yes they die, due in large part to their own stupidity.
Attempting to build these people into heroes sets a bad example to anyone who is thinking of joining a very rewarding sport.
There are many tales written by divers that do not resort to aggrandizing stupidity. Unfortunately, this is not one of them.
    unfortunately abridged
This is an interesting story and probably worth listening to. This reminds me of the reason I usually do NOT listen to abridged books. It is difficult to tell if the author presented the material in a choppy manner or if it was improperly chopped up by the abridgement, causing a lack of continuity. I have listened to the narrator before and he is good. However his style was wrong for this book. If you have not already listened to them then listen to Dragon Sea (good) or Shadow divers(excellent). Save this one for last or better yet find it unabridged or get the book and read it.
    Sound is distorted
Whoever was responsible for the technical aspect of making this recording did a poor job. The sound is distorted as though the amplifier was being overdriven.

    Critic Reviews:
"The ultimate book of ordeals....Fascinating, entertaining, and horrifying. I heartily recommend it." (Paul Theroux)
    Members Reviews:
    Reads like a text book
I believe this was written in 1988 but the tone and style seems more like an 1800's text book. It contains quite a bit of information, but I didn't find it at all "Fascinating, entertaining, and horrifying" as the review by Paul Theroux states. Nor can "I heartily recommend it". If you're interested in a study of the psychology and history of marooned people, go for it, if you're looking for facinatition and entertainment, pass on this one.
    Slow to start
I'm a big fan of survivor stories such as those on the Discovery channel, so I thought this book would be enthralling. However, I found it hard to get into and hard to follow (possibly because my mind kept wandering), at least for the first third of the book. If you're looking for entertaining survivor stories and you want to give this one a try, I'd skip part 1 and start with part 2. Even then, it's still a little dry.
Other survivor stories I'd recommend include Life of Pi (fiction) and Over the Edge (non-fiction).
    awesome from start to finish
Captivating from start to finish!! From the moments of meek humanity to the moments of sheer terror any human being will find it easy to get hooked by this book
A favourite entry in my audio library
    Any additional comments?
Enjoyable book, enjoyable narration. Like many folks who enjoy historical survival stories, I have favourite sub-genres (e.g., I favour old marooning and shipwreck stories rather than more modern plane-goes-down-in-the-desert/mountains). This book spans a range of survival stories, so depending on the mood I'm in when I replay this book, I skip around to different chapters. That doesn't make me want to reduce my rating for this book, though, because I haven't lost interest in it - years after buying it, I still occasionally listen to parts of it. It's good therapy for when I get tired of crowds and dealing with people - I listen to the book and reflect on what it would be like to be isolated and forced to survive on my wits alone.
    Not boring
    Any additional comments?
This book is far more than a collection of tales of the macabre for the armchair adventurer; it is filled with fascinating information of historic interest that allows the reader to regard the subject matter in a more enlightened manner. The only reason I can image for the low accounting of stars from some of the reviewers is that they were expecting perhaps a more 'Disney' like rendering of these tales full of excitement but with very little depth.
I bought this book in 1992 and have always held it in high esteem ever since. Then I found it as an audio and am very happy to have purchased and listened to it. The only fault I can find, is in the reading, which, to my ear sometimes sounds as if the reader is bored. This is not so bad that it distracts any from the book, but in me anyway, leaves a touch of regret, for this book is very far from dull.

Bring back Bill! Loved his narration of "At Home".
If you could sum up A Walk in the Woods in three words, what would they be?
    Classic Bryson.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The relationship between Bill and Katz.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Cloying...Bill Bryson is nothing if not dry, and I found Mr Roberts to be obvious and, sorry...annoying.
    Brilliant as always
I'm already a fan of Bill and read the book years ago, but this is how good it was - while doing a non-stop 100km charity walk, I saved this for the midnight to dawn section and it was so entertaining and engrossing that I pretty much forgot I was on a rutted track in the pitch dark and had been walking for 20 hours. All I remember of those hours are Bill's stories of preparing for and slogging up and down Appalachian mountains which not only made what I was doing seem really easy but I'm pretty sure made me the only person on the track who was laughing out loud. For that alone I have to give it 5 stars.
    A Walk in the Woods
I enjoyed this book it was great.I like Bryson's sense of humour always makes me laugh out loud.
There will never be a better AT book.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Hilariously funny book - loved every minute of it. So well brilliantly well read. I recommend this to everyone, all the time.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Walk in the Woods?
Katz ditching half the contents of his pack on the first day. And Bill's understandable terror of BEARS!!!!!
Have you listened to any of William Robertss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Down Under, Neither Here nor there, Made in America, Notes from a big country. All extremely well read, William Roberts conveys the humour better than Bill Bryson himself.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
If you go into the woods tonight...Prepare for a Bear surprise!
    Any additional comments?
    Everyone should read this!
    What a Great Story
I have read this book several times over the years, and I enjoy it every-time. It is a wonderful book and I love his humor.
