    Down to earth!
Disarmingly honest, while remaining thoughtful, intelligent, and funny. I didn't want the journey to end! Very engagingly read by the author.
    Inspirational
Honest, realistic, incredibly funny I cannot say enough about this book I have listen to it three times already and I am sure I will again in the future. Love it!
    Unerwartet gut!
    Great perspective on the camino
His story telling and insights resonated with me a lot. Listened to the book years ago and that's when the seed of the idea of walking El camino started. Today and about to start the walk and listened to this book again to send me off.

Sarickma.

    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd

Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Australia's best-selling nonfiction author of all time. Douglas Mawson, born in 1882 and knighted in 1914, was Australia's greatest Antarctic explorer. On 2 December 1911, he led an expedition from Hobart to explore the virgin frozen coastline below, 2000 miles of which had never felt the tread of a human foot. After setting up Main Base at Cape Denision and Western Base on Queen Mary Land, he headed east on an extraordinary sledging trek with his companions, Belgrave Ninnis and Dr Xavier Mertz. After five weeks, tragedy struck. Ninnis was swallowed whole by a snow-covered crevasse, and Mawson and Mertz realised it was too dangerous to go on. With the scant food and provisions they had left, turning back was almost equally perilous. Their dwindling supplies forced them to kill their dogs to feed the other dogs, at first, and then themselves. Hunger, sickness and despair eventually got the better of Mertz, and he succumbed to madness and then to death. Mawson found himself all alone, 160 miles from safety, with next to no food. Peter FitzSimons tells the staggering tale of Mawson's survival, despite all the odds, arriving back just in time to see his rescue ship disappearing over the horizon. He also masterfully interweaves the stories of the other giants from the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration - Scott of the Antarctic, Sir Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen - to bring the jaw-dropping events of this bygone era dazzlingly back to life.

A Real Life "Boys Own" Adventure Story
Would you listen to Mawson and the Ice Men of the Heroic Age again? Why?
Yes, and intend to do so. It is long and detailed but so fascinating in its account of events in early 20th century Antarctic.
What did you like best about this story?
This account is history brought to life through the diaries and logs of each explorer and many of their men who travelled the journey to the Antarctic. It's recounted in the present tense, so you feel that you are there as the story unfolds. Included are so many interesting facts about the region, the equipment and the improvised methods used to overcome extreme difficulties, all extremely compelling listening. Also, there are many moments of both humour and sadness.
    Any additional comments?
I was surprised just how much I enjoyed this book. If you like real-life adventure and modern history told in an accessible and entertaining manner, then this book is for you. I will be on the lookout for other books by Peter FitzSimons. Highly recommended.
    Great book
Awesome book, in depth but keeps you interested. I recommend this for anyone wanting to get a more human aspect of polar travel and the risks faced
    Ice ice, baby.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Sure, it was interesting enough, though I took a few days to finish it as I was going to other books in order to take a break from this one. Felt very long, like the previous sentence I just wrote.
What did you like best about this story?
The history of the race to the pole. I've read several north pole books and didn't know much about this one.

Title: The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Listen 2 Read, LLC.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 31 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
The great unknown of the Southwest is conquered by a one-armed man and his crew of adventurers, placing the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon on the map of the American continent. It is a journey no human being had ever made before. Dangerous rapids, narrow canyon walls offering no escape, terrifying river waterfalls, capsized boats, near drowning, lost equipment and disillusioned men are dramatically described by John Wesley Powell, leader of this adventurous party. In this first recording as an audiobook, Powell powerfully describes the spectacular beauty of the landscape, the fascinating lives of the indigenous people and the courageous efforts of the expedition party.
    Members Reviews:
No justice done to JW Powell by narrator
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This book desperately needs a less dramatic reader. Powell was a fairly button downed autocrat and to think he would have tolerated someone breathlessly, excitedly, and needlessly exaggerating the emotion of his text defies imagination. The narrator's style severely detracts from the text, which is unfortunate.
If youve listened to books by John Wesley Powell before, how does this one compare?
    N/A
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Andre Stojka?
Anyone who can read text without adding extreme voice inflection!
Could you see The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Yes - but a movie was made years ago by Disney. The Colorado and Green River portions are film worthy, but am not sure about the rest.
    Any additional comments?
Powell's narrative is flawed in many respects, including detailing parts of this 1871 expedition in this 1869 book with acknowledging them. However, the information he includes is noteworthy and I only wish Powell was more of a story teller.
    Unfortunate Narration
I listen to audiobooks almost daily due to my long drive to work. The content of this book is excellent, but I couldn't finish it because the narration was so overdone. It's hard to explain how it is irritating, but it's seemed overly done or over acted. I'm sure some will appreciate it, but I could not overcome it.
    Very informative, and good narration
This is a wonderful book that describes the mighty river and its awe inspiring canyons in vivid detail. The narrator who sounds like a man of many seasons is so realistic as if John Wesley Powell himself is telling his own story. A prior review of the map of Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona with regard to the river and its tributories will greatly enhance the listeners comprehension.
    Winnie-the-Pooh narates this classic.
Still trying to finish as the narrator leaves me put off. This a first for me and I'm a big J.W.P. fan...
Santa Claus Reading to Little Kids
What didnt you like about Andre Stojkas performance?
A better delivery would have made this better. I'm pretty sure the reader was the guy that reads the Smuckers commercials, and he apparently has about the same vocal range as a jar of jelly. Here is an epic journal of one of America's greatest explorers, in some of our most harsh and iconic landscapes, and it's read to us like we're preschool kids listening to grandpa tell his grandpa stories once again.

    Publisher's Summary:
The deepest cave on earth was a prize that had remained unclaimed for centuries, long after every other ultimate discovery had been made: both poles by 1912, Everest in 1958, the Challenger Deep in 1961. In 1969 we even walked on the moon. And yet as late as 2000, the earths deepest cavethe supercaveremained undiscovered. This is the story of the men and women who risked everything to find it, earning their place in history beside the likes of Peary, Amundsen, Hillary, and Armstrong.
In 2004, two great scientist-explorers are attempting to find the bottom of the world. Bold, heroic American Bill Stone is committed to the vast Cheve Cave, located in southern Mexico and deadly even by supercave standards. On the other side of the globe, legendary Ukrainian explorer Alexander KlimchoukStones polar opposite in temperament and style, but every bit his equal in scientific expertise, physical bravery, and sheer determinationhas targeted Krubera, a freezing nightmare of a supercave in the Republic of Georgia, where underground dangers are compounded by the horrors of separatist war in this former Soviet republic.
Blind Descent explores both the brightest and darkest aspects of the timeless human urge to discoverto be first. It is also a thrilling epic about a pursuit that makes even extreme mountaineering and ocean exploration pale by comparison.
    Critic Reviews:
"Holds the reader to his seat, containing dangers aplenty with deadly falls, killer microbes, sudden burial, asphyxiation, claustrophobia, anxiety, and hallucinations far underneath the ground in a lightless world. Using a pulse-pounding narrative, this is tense real-life adventure pitting two master cavers mirroring the cold war with very uncommonly high stakes." (

    Amazing Courage!!
I'm an adventure/travel story buff. I loved Into Thin Air, Lost City of Z, Shadow Divers and Endurance. This one ranks right up there with those amazing true stories. I'm amazed at the courage it takes to explore the deepest caves in the world and the dibilitating panic attack they call, "The Rapture" that can hit anyone at anytime whilst inside the deep recesses of the Earth!! I highly recommend this adventure and the narrator does an excellent job. A credit well spent!!!
Amazon Best Books of Month June 2010 I Agree
Well, I am always lookiing for books that inform in areas which are unfamiliar. So with some interest I downloaded Blind Descent. I actually put off listening because my other Audible downloads seemed more interesting. Well, this is one of the best books I have listened to in years and I have been following Audible for a long time and Books on Tape before. This is an adventure story, science exposition, and I can't say what else.
Anyway, this is James Tabor's effort to describe the work of primier cavers (Bill Stone and ALexander Kliimchouk) as they labor to find the world's deepest caves. It details their adventures, the logistical problems encountered, political maneuvering necessary and everything else that you cannot ever expect in advance.
The book is wonderfully written and researched. Don Leslie could not be topped in his reading. Grab your mouse and click "Buy" - now. Download this volume and plug in your ear phones as soon as you can.

    Title: River Horse
    Subtitle: A Voyage Across America
    Author: William Least Heat-Moon
    Narrator: Jay O. Sanders
    Format: Abridged
Length: 6 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-15-10
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 44 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
In this abridgement of River-Horse, the pre-eminent chronicler of American back roads - who has given us the classics Blue Highways and Prairyerth - recounts his singular voyage through American waters from sea to sea. Along the route, he offers a lyrical and ceaselessly fascinating shipboard perspective on the country and its rivers, lakes, canals, and landscapes. Brimming with history, drama, and wisdom, River-Horse belongs in the pantheon of American travel literature.
In his most ambitious journey ever, Heat-Moon sets off aboard a small boat he named Nikawa ("river horse" in Osage) from the Atlantic at New York Harbor in hopes of entering the Pacific near Astoria, Oregon. He and his companion, Pilotis, struggle to cover some 5,000 watery miles - more than any other cross-country river traveler has ever managed - often following in the wakes of our most famous explorers, from Henry Hudson to Lewis and Clark.
En route, the voyagers confront massive floods, submerged rocks, dangerous weather, and their own doubts about whether they can complete the trip. But the hard days yield up incomparable pleasures: strangers generous with help and eccentric tales, landscapes unchanged since Sacagawea saw them, riverscapes flowing with a lively past, and the growing belief that efforts to protect our lands and waters are beginning to pay off. And, throughout its course, the expedition enjoys coincidences so breathtaking as to suggest the intervention of a divine and witty Providence.
Teeming with humanity and high adventure, Heat-Moon's account is an unsentimental and original arteriogram of our nation at the edge of the Millennium.

    Publisher's Summary:
Charles Kuralt is a national treasure, a reporter and man of the world who was to many the real and true voice of America. For more than 35 years, he delighted us with his On the Road reports, as an anchor of CBS News Sunday Morning, and with bestselling books that include On the Road with Charles Kuralt and Charles Kuralt's America. As Time magazine wrote, he was "the laureate of the common man."
The project that Kuralt was working on when he died was An American Moment with Charles Kuralt, a series of brief television essays about the people, places, and ideas that define the national spirit: the man who handcrafts the president's shoes; the origin of buffalo wings; Paul Bunyan's hometown of Bemidji, Minnesota; the Pony Express Museum; Pike Place Market in Seattle; Ferris wheels; and more.
A collection of enchanting and sometimes touching stories that brings back Charles Kuralt's distinctive voice, Charles Kuralt's American Moments celebrates the quintessential American character and traditions that he so loved.

    America As It Was.
This book is filled with short accounts of diverse "American Moments" grouped in ten areas. This is a sampling. Each reader would do a completely different review as there is so much to choose from to make an interesting account.
The Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, built in 1914, was a beautiful railroad palace through which half the soldiers of this country passed Dec. 7, the day word came of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The interior, from the insert photograph, looks a lot like the magnificent station in Washington, D.C. Back then, the idea was to create grand buildings for everyday citizens. At the street entrance, there on the sidewalk, stood a tall ornate black clock like the one which graced Knoxville's Gay Street for several decades. Ours was recently moved by the owners of a jewelry store to the new location west of town, a lavish edifice, and yet the clock has yet to be put up. They claimed it because it had stood in front of the downtown store. There is now a campaign to replace it there among the brew pubs, martini bars, and loft apartments where the downtowners hang out. Somehow, it will lack the 'dignity' of the original.
There are two photos of Becky Davis of Tennessee making cotton candy at a Fair. Invented in the 1920s (Karault says by a dentist), it is sticky spun sugar in pretty colors. It takes experience to flip it just right to keep from being covered by the gooey stuff. He wonders what folks ate at fairs and carnivals before cotton candy came along. In the 1980s, funnel cakes made an appearance at the World's Fair in Knoxville.

In this classic volume, Peter Matthiessen exquisitely combines nature and travel writing to bring East Africa to vivid life. He skillfully and magically portrays the sights, scenes, and people he observed firsthand in several trips over the course of a dozen years: the daily lives of herdsmen and hunter-gatherers; the drama of the predator kills; the hundreds of exotic animals; the breathtaking landscapes; the area's turbulent natural, political, and social histories; the adventures of the field biologists who pursue and investigate the habits of wild creatures; the anthropologists seeking mans origins throughout the Rift Valley; and the lonely African, poised between the traditional ways and the conflicting demands of Western culture.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Tree Where Man Was Born to be better than the print version?
No, I am going to buy the book as well.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Tree Where Man Was Born?
    All of it.
Have you listened to any of Dion Grahams other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is my first - he is TOP NOTCH
    Any additional comments?
The first download starting pausing toward the end. It was most annoying as I was so engrossed and I had to keep pushing pal over and over. It was not the system, I listened to it w/ headphones , it still happened. The second download skipped a few times, nowhere near as bad as the pausing. I'm only mentioning it because I love your company and it's the first time anything like that has happened. I thought it would be helpful. AN AMAZING BOOK!
