    Title: 50 Wild Motorcycle Tales
Subtitle: An Anthology of Motorcycle Stories
    Author: Walter F. Kern
Narrator: Walter F. Kern, Kim Holmes, Sam Smith
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Walter F. Kern
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 15 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
This audiobook is based on user submissions received by Walter F. Kern during his stint at the Motorcycles Guide at About.com, and also during his current assignment as editor of Motorcycle Views, which he founded.
This book is an anthology of motorcycle stories. These 50 motorcycle tales were submitted to the author over a 13-year period by a wide range of motorcyclists from all walks of life. These authors tell their own personal stories of what happened to them as they rode their motorcycles.
Some tales are very short, and some are very long. You may find the stories of some authors grouped together. Each tale was intensively edited to provide a good listening experience. You'll find humor, risk-taking, adventures, poetry, rhyming verse, two-up excursions, world travelers, stupid tricks on bikes, lessons learned, winter riding perils, hazards while riding, and stories told by returning riders.
Walter wrote five of these stories. Two of his stories relate his experiences on his motorcycle trips. Two stories are fictional children's stories that involve fantasy and motorcycles. The last story is a short fictional tale that describes an alternate world of motorcycles.

    Bar talk in book form
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Eh.... I couldn't imagine too many
What was most disappointing about Walter F. Kerns story?
The voices, the way the stories were told. Poorly scripted and read. This could have been better done by a bunch of bikers sitting around a bar with a mic in the middle them all. Not tremendously entertaining. I only made it through 12 "stories" and I couldn't take it anymore.
Would you be willing to try another one of the narratorss performances?
    Probably not.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from 50 Wild Motorcycle Tales?
All of them between the beginning and end.
    Any additional comments?
I really don't think this was worthy of a book. I tell stories all the time but I don't make a book out of them.
    Kept me entertained
This is not my style of audio, by theme and form so I may not be the best critic but I decided to give it a chance and it was ok.
I tended to like the shorter stories vs the longer ones. I felt them all to be middle of the road and not over the top amazing but not terrible. I read a review that said it was bar room talk and that is a completely accurate description. I felt like these were stories I would overhear at a bar and be completely content eavesdropping on.
The narration was more like story telling and not a narrative. Again, more like overhearing a story than a book meant to suck you in and keep you there.
    Poor
Struggled to listen to it all, the people where reading off a page like robots, it was like listening to a car show that has those beautiful women talking that may speak well and pronunciate but come across wrong. Very americanised for it seams those that have just spent thousands on a new Harley to ride once or twice a year.
    Good stories but horrible narration
It's a shame. Most of the stories were really interesting but they were mostly read in flat monotone. The worst culprit is the bloke who did Chopper Clause, I ended up skipping the stories he read. I'd still recommend the book though!

Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Mel Adkins describes life in Alaska in the early days of statehood by a family from the plains of Oklahoma. They learned to be inventive and self-reliant in a land untouched by humans after moving more than 12 miles from the nearest road, to a 160-acre homestead on the Kenai Peninsula. To a young man just entering his teens this was a dream come true, but the physical labor that had to be done the first year, simply to survive, was more than he had ever imagined. Cutting firewood with a manual cross cut saw, packing water from the spring, working on a sawmill, and packing supplies in to the homestead on his back left little time for hunting and fishing. The family almost starved and froze out that first year, but sheer will power, stubbornness, and rugged determination for a better way of life persevered; a family of the greenest cheechackos that ever homesteaded in the land of the midnight sun.

    The Alaskan Homesteader
The way he writes, you feel your right there in the story line. Interesting to the end. thank you very much.
    Great read!
    Great read
Interesting read. Learned a lot about early Alaska.
The book held my interest. It isn't meant to be an art of writing but the author gave good information at the end for all of us that think we can go off the grid. I'm still questioning how you can work as much as they did and use 100,000 rounds of ammunition in one year.....maybe just a little humor thrown in there. If you divide 100,000 by 365, you would be using 275 shells a day.
    Humor fell flat
Exaggeration and speculation can be funny but I didn't find it so in this story. I assume "...you make a sudden right turn by jerking the wheel and lifting two wheels off the pavement..." (while driving a '49 Chevy flatbed with a homemade plywood camper) and "...people that lived on that one street actually put lawn chairs from the back yard out in the front where they could see us and make bets whether we would be back to make more circles..." were attempts at humor but for me it fell flat. Also, the numerous typos (capitalization errors and missing apostrophes, commas, etc.) greatly detracted from the story.

The author grew up in the Canadian Rockies and has been exploring them since she was a child.

Interesting but lacks index which is fatal flaw
An interesting book with a list of topics but no index or ability to jump to topic. Hence you have to read until you get there or take blind stabs at where in the book the topic is. Too bad but this seems a fatal flaw. Also topics are handled only at modest depth. Very light reading for a guide book....
    Preparing for a trip
Have been using this to prepare and plan an upcoming trip and I find the information clear concrete accessible and helpful
    good read
very good guide, have read several others about the same area. I will be able to check out the quality when I visit soon.

    Inveraray Castle in Argyll, Scotland
I love castles, and having spent time touring castles in Spain and England, I couldnât wait to read the stories about Castles in Scotland. And if the truth be told, I was curious to see if the author would discuss which castle belonged to the âHighlanderâ television series from the Clan of Duncan MacLeod. This book is a go-to guide if you are planning to tour Scotland and visit the castles. This guide contains information regarding several castles such as location, local transportation, places to eat and the times that they are open. Wouldnât it be great to have your wedding reception at one of these castles? Well, this guide shows in detail which castles are available for luncheons and or receptions. What makes this guide special is that it also includes pictures of the castles of those that are still standing, occupied or those that are only a shelf of their past dominance. One of my favorite castles is the Inveraray Castle in Argyll, Scotland. This is where the British television series âDowntown Abbyâ is filmed. To find out more about this castle or even which castle the âHighlanderâ television series was filmed at you will need to get your own copy of this book.
    Please hire an editor!
I'm planning a trip to Scotland and thought this book would be great for planning out castles to visit. I'm disappointed to report that this short volume is in desperate need of a good editor. The author does not understand the grammatical use of present and past tense, they're used inconsistently through out. Rather than enjoying the history, the grammar kept interrupting the flow. There is one small photo per castle and several pages donated to each castle. While I did appreciate the short historical passages and lists of sights to see at each castle, I felt like the author missed the mark in bringing these historical wonders to life.
When I read the below regarding the famous Balmoral Castle, I had to re-check the date this volume was published since surely Princess Diana's passing in 1997 was one of the biggest news stories ever televised. On the next page the author tells us that HRH Queen Elizabeth heard about the tragic passing of Princess Diana while staying at Balmoral.
"1. The Craigowan Lodge â It is a stone house that has seven bedrooms. It is about a mile away from the main castle.

The Veneto region offers travelers all manner of adventures. This audiobook focuses on exploring the Veneto's wine zones while highlighting cultural adventures, sports adventures, adventures for the soul, family adventures, driving adventures, and many other types of activities to help you discover more about the land. Writers, painters, historians, and philosophers have long been inspired by the dramatic landscapes of the Veneto Region and, by translating astute observations on canvas or in print, have captured the beauty of a land and a people that have evolved over many centuries.
Situated in Italy's northernmost zone, few other regions boast such diverse landscapes. From the low sandy coastline where the Veneto meets the Adriatic Sea, to the mighty Alpine peaks, rolling hills, thermal springs, and lagoon systems, the varied landscape makes for lively getaways any season of the year. Veneto, a name that derives from Veneti, a pre-Roman people who once inhabited the area, is divided into seven provinces: Belluno, Padua, Rovigo, Treviso, Venice, Verona, and Vicenza. During Venice's golden age, aristocrats brought their wealth to the Veneto countryside and commissioned architects to build agricultural estates and country homes.
Today, more than 4,000 villas remind us of that period, the most famous of which were designed by 16th century architect Andrea Palladio. This guide tells you about the wine-growing regions, especially: the Euganean Hills, Prosecco, Soave, Cistoza, Bardolino, Valpolicella, Bassano del Grappa - how to visit the vineyards, taste the wines, trying the best restaurants, and the best places to stay in each region. All of the details you need to know are here so your trip will be unforgettable.

    Got wine?
I made it half way through without hearing anything about wine. This is more like an outdated travel guide including a loooong list of airline choices, how to dress, a looooong list of different accommodations. NOTHING about Italian wines. I finally became frustrated enough to recognize that my time would be better spent on this review than slogging through to the end of this book.
This book is not meant for audio listening
My expectation was that this book would present a traveler's tour of the region from a descriptive standpoint. There is some of that, but much less than the reeling off of websites and phone numbers, which the narrator then repeats, and spells out! It is akin to listening to someone reading the phone book! There are short descriptive parts and then - oh no! - the narrator launches into all the contact info - websites, hours, phone numbers - and then repeats and spells out. So then one fast forwards and voila! - one completely loses a sense for the book. I would think that a pdf ould have been included that lists out all this address/contact info under the name of the entity or attraction. Even the winery infomation - it was cursory with hours and contact info. A disappointment. Had to stop listening after the first 90 minutes, couldn't bear to hear the narrator launch into 'www.' again. Wrong format, or merely presented in such a way were the contact info got in the way of anything beneficial.
Ripoff * even for US first-time abroad travellers
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    Nothing.

Have you been bit by the RV bug? Do you spend hours reading blogs on living the RV life, blogs that go on and on about a life of freedom and travel? Do you go to RV shows and wander through the huge homes on wheels, dreaming that you're steering one of the huge beasts to wherever your heart desires?
It's easy to get caught up in what RV expert Sunny Skye calls the RV hype - for example, you'll wake up every morning looking out your window at beautiful views of nature, you'll meet interesting people you can sit around a campfire with and trade foil dinner recipes, and you'll be able to travel to places you've always wanted to see.
What the RV marketers don't tell you is the other side of the nomadic lifestyle coin - the mechanical problems by the side of the road, the constant searching for water and a place to camp, the uncertainty of having just anyone able to walk up to your rig in the middle of the night - well, in short, the truth about the mobile lifestyle.
Sunny has been RVing since she was a kid, and she'll show you how to assess if the nomadic lifestyle is for you in an unbiased and educated manner, balancing the pros and the cons. She does this by walking you through the most common steps in the RV life.

    Very Useful
it is rare these days to find a book such as this with such accurate information, and yet contrary to 99% of published mainstream media hype including blogs, other authors, and sales people with agendas. We in the US seem to have lost the ability to discuss both sides of an issue, in this case full time RV living. But that is just what this book does in a concise approachable accessible and palatable manner. I recommend this book. It might save you a lot of money and and from making a very expensive mistake.

    Very helpful information.

    Concise and clear.
    And most of all, applicable.
    I really enjoyed it.
    Great Guide
what a great book on how to get started rving. I wish she went more in depth about certain things but for an overall book I rather enjoyed it.
Written by a woman but narrated by a man
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes, Have a woman narrator. It really makes a difference to me when listening to an audible book to have the same gender as narrator.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Living the Simple RV Life?
When I found out at the end that this was written by a woman. I did not know who Sunny Skye was, I just listened to the book.
Did Richard Henzel do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes however his voice reminds me of films I use to watch in class in public school. I almost did not continue to listen to the book because of this. Made the book more of a textbook instruction than a "story".
Do you think Living the Simple RV Life needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    Not sure.
    Any additional comments?
The book covered most ins and outs when thinking of full time RVing. It was written well enough, But the narrator was not a good match and gave it a lessor good feeling for me.

    A fun and informative memoir!
The story of Diz and Randy's sojourn was intimate and hilarious. The journey was certainly worth it. Diz is a captivating storyteller. I'm hungry!
    Fit my taste perfectly
Not everyone will love this memoir as I did. You have to enjoy just sitting and listening to conversation all afternoon. I now believe Diz White would be one of the best conversational afternoons I could spend.
This memoir doesn't have a cliff-hanger plot or offer deep philosophical insights. But it does offer the listener a wonderful few months of house-hunting in the Cotswolds, made delightful by the conversation of the writer/narrator. Highly recommended for those whose taste run in that direction.
    Pleasing and often, hilarious
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, if said friend was interested in the Cotswold and travel and food.

    Narrator: Daniel David Shapiro
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Top Drawer Publishing
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 29 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Early one May, Sam Neumann arrived in the breathtaking wilderness of Denali, Alaska with a smile on his face and adventure in his heart. But less than 24 hours later, both had evaporated as he stood behind the counter of a filthy gas station - his new place of employment - and tried to piece together what exactly had gone wrong.
Memoirs of a Gas Station is a New York Times best-selling personal account of a summer trapped in a convenience store on the edge of Denali National Park. It is a journey across the Alaskan tundra and headlong into the ridiculous world of seasonal employment.
The summer began with shock, horror, and denim shirts as Sam struggled to accept his new role as a gas station employee. To escape it, he took to the forests of Denali at every free moment, soon finding himself face-to-face with an angry adult moose, shivering numb trying to last the night on a frigid mountainside, and being seduced by a Mormon divorcee.
Often satirical, sometimes introspective, and always brutally honest, Memoirs of a Gas Station takes you on a raucous ride through the best and worst summer of one man's life. From booze-soaked employee parties to one very awkward romantic episode in a tree house, Sam learned more than he ever planned about the Last Frontier. But weekends spent stumbling through seedy Alaskan bars and hitch-hiking to remote destinations gave him a unique perspective on life, and led him to find friendship, adventure, and love in the most unexpected places.

    Funny and intersting
    Any additional comments?
This is a great book, it is funny, realistic, and slightly educational. His adventure working in Alaska reflects the trials and tribulations of working as a seasonal worker in Alaska. The narrator does a great job and is easy to listen to.
If you are thinking about getting this book, you should, you will not regret it.
This book is not about Denali
Yep, this book is not about Denali or hiking in it; I don't know why I thought it was. I've discovered, belatedly, that it's a memoir by a twenty-one (?) year-old pouty, entitled white guy who thinks this is the worst summer of his life. I'm half way and he's hardly set boot upon tundra but has had a lot of problems with his job, his fellow employees, his uniform. Rock bands and sports are other favorite topics. If you enjoy this sort of thing, go for it.
    I don't like Sam
If I ever met Sam I'm positive I wouldn't like him. He seems whiny and arrogant. I struggled to finish this book. It was extremely uneventful.
    Entertaining
If you enjoy first person narratives with a cast of quirky characters and a decidedly politically incorrect delivery then this is the book for you.
    Funny and Heartfelt!
What did you like best about this story?
Sam has a straightforward and wry way of writing. You do really get a sense of majesty when he describes the Alaskan landscape. I felt like I was experiencing the Alaskan summer along with the author!

    Members Reviews:
Not a lot of info and too short.
Save your money. Travel cheap. Be smart about your safety. Travel light. Vietnam and China have really good food. Beer is cheap in Vietnam. Now you don't have to read the book.
    easy listen
an easy listen on my commute to work. made me want to travel each day instead if work. a nice mental escape.
Bought this for My Daughter, the traveler.
What made the experience of listening to A Year Without Make-Up the most enjoyable?
Good Travel tips... Save First and think safety, Walk away if uncomfortable, without apology!! Short, concise, interesting.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Neither, Just good review of a young woman's travels. Good information for all those that travel outside the country.
    Any additional comments?
This was my daughters choice of books, but has become good information for me as well. Enjoyed the 2 + hours spent listening in the car.
    Nothing new
I suppose it would be a nice bit of advice for people setting out of their first trip, but nothing groundbreaking. I did not like the reader, she was way too slow and even pronounced some names of places wrong. That's the type of thing you shouldn't get wrong in a travel book!
