The only Berlin travel guide you'll ever need

This guide will be an invaluable companion during your visit to Berlin. Berlin is a very modern and beautiful European city, but without a good guide you could miss some interesting places, because the city is huge. The audiobook covers many cool spots, helps you get organized, find budget sleeps and the most exciting nightlife locations. It is very well put together, narration is good and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is visiting Berlin for the first time.

Helped me organize my time while in Berlin

I was going to visit Berlin with some of my co-workers in a business trip, but I also wanted to visit historical places and get the best from Berlin in those few days. I had no time to read a travel guide, so I decided to go with the audiobook. This audiobook is a great and very well written guide, and if you are first-time visiting Berlin, it will give you all the info you need. I visited some historical places, ate at the recommended restaurants and felt much more comfortable as a tourist for having this guide.

I received thes book for free and immediately I want to say, that it should not be taken as a guide to Thailand. On the contrary, it is worth reading this book to see Thailand through the eyes of the author. The beauty and originality of this country. And of course in this book there are chapters that show the culture of this people. This is an interesting reading at leisure.

A compelling and fascinating book from a first class story teller!

The Spanish Conquest of Peru as it Ought to be Told (mostly)

This is an excellent history of the Spanish conquest of Peru and its aftermath. Detailed history of Inca resistance and initial losses. It was a much hard fought colonization than usually presented in history books. Give lush detail on the activities of the later Inca emperor in their struggle to rid themselves of the Spanish. The one drawback is that MacQuarrie give little ;credit to the Indian allies of the Spanish. He makes it sound like a small band of Spanish on horses fended off hundreds of thousands of the Incas and there allies in one siege that last for more than a year. At the same time, it is clear that the Incas had powerful native enemies. This part of the story is hardly convincing. Otherwise it is a great read,

Inspired my trip to Peru

Really enjoyed the short story style of writing. And how all the stories pieced together. Now looking for more of MacQuarrie's books

I thought I knew about prepping... until I read this book!

This book really expanded my knowledge of prepping. I was already interested in this powerful skill set. Though, after reading this book I now can see how little I actually knew. The book is packed with useful information that will help you prepare and even survive when the SHTF event occurs. There are many things going on that give you plenty of reason to be concerned whether AI, robots, drones, spying, global warming, nanotech, biotech or many of other fields of science advancing faster than we can ask the question of whether they ought to be explored or not. This book will prepare you for all of these events!

Good ideas and instructions but pictures not of much use.

Although it does have good ideas and instructions for some the pictures are useless in black and white. I do know cattails, dandelions and I did recognize Jennifer Lawrence in the Hunger Games. The other plant pictures - no idea what they really look like.

Basic instructions for fires, fishing, trapping were good and easy to follow. Foraging for plant food not so good.

Vintage Bill Bryson!

For those who thought Notes from a Small Island was theor favorite Bryson, you should know he has done a sequel which is even better. Meet the old man Bryson. More caustic wit which couldn't have mature better

The narrator is brilliant. Loved it!

I am a Bryson fan girl so of course I loved the book but the narrator, Nathan Osgood, made it so much better! I heard and re-heard some parts because they were so impeccable.

How could the performance have been better?

This reader thought he was reading a thriller not a laconic, witty travelogue. It sounded as though he had been handed the book 30 secs before the read - the sentences took him by surprise or, maybe, he just has no idea of the structure of a sentence. So often the emphasis would be on the noun rather than the adjective - greenBELT, roundABOUT. The only saving grace was that he had swotted up on how to pronounce the place names correctly. But the style of the book was, clearly, a complete mystery to him.

Great Read & Beautiful Photography

National Geographic brings us Everest: Mountain Without Mercy which is a fascinating book. It tells the true story of the disastrous 1996 Everest climb while making the highest ever grossing (152m dollars) documentary IMAX film âEverestâ. As well as the story the book is full of stunning colour photographs and updated information about recent Everest events, climbs and notable climbers. It captures the majesty, danger and power of this awe-inspiring mountain in words and the accompanying beautiful breath-taking images (some images never published before).

This is a captivating, often educational and sometimes shocking read. The 1996 Everest climbing season was to become infamous for the lives lost as well as those saved. Experienced climbers, guides and some of their clients died that year which just reminded us all just how perilous this incredible mountain can be. The book also looks at the local Sherpas who support and make the climbs possible. You come to realise that for them as well as some of the climbers that this is just not about skill and physical endurance. Climbing Everest for the Sherpas is a spiritual thing and we learn of their pre-climb rituals and offerings made to ask protection and please their Deities.

The other thing that surprised me from the book was to learn how much of a business climbing Everest has become. The cost of expedition climbing licences has risen and how the whole Everest experience has become a tourist attraction.
