A life story by the great actress of her time.
If you could sum up My Life in Three Acts in three words, what would they be?
Helen Hayes was one of the greatest actresses of her time and to hear her talk of her life, her family and her successes on stage and screen is a real privilege. I loved every minute of it.
What did you like best about this story?
Her sweet voice and her ability to bring us into her story is priceless.
Have you listened to any of Helen Hayess other performances before? How does this one compare?
Since she was telling of her truthful life, I do not consider it a performance, but rather her relaying her life in stories. She did so beautifully and honestly.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes but my schedule prevented me from doing so.

    the author was always reading
Tim Green's audiobook is hampered only in that as of this date one can only download it as an "audio 2" format--so the sound is very early radio.
So said, this book is by a man who was always reading through his career in sports. Other althetes would soothe themselves in whatever way they could during offtine--Mr. Green took jokes for it as a multi-year defensive linmeman for the Atlanta Falcons in the 1990s.
Mr. Green's established a football career and at the same time was going to law school--so his reading of his own work is highly credible as a presumption.
I'm a lawyer and a 35-year NFL addict (Jets fan-so I must be addicted)--and this book could not have been better. Insights into things as cool as why it's not that great to win in the playoffs to none of the nonof the guys wear cups to what they really yell, miked and unmiked, during the game, to how much of the game is really segregated.
I would put this in a class with the new book about Belichick by Halberstram--though, personally, I found this I found this more persuasive and entertaining. Check out samples on that for personal taste. Moneyball and the Phil Jackson and Lombardi books are this good. I'm waiting for audible.com to acquire "Juiced."
Oh--the Faye Resnick book is niot to go unmentioned--truly an experience--one of the best on audible, period, for its relation to sports and pure blindness and vanity.
    Ian Schneider, New York
Not remotely any 'scoops' in this book. Sanitized
For a great NFL read on the life of a player say to day, I recommend 'a few seconds of panic' and 'slow getting up'. Start with those. Next, do NFL Confidential. With any of those, you wont need this. My guess is this was a very compelling book until NFL lawyers probably went in an redacted anything of interest.
This book was not very interesting.
What disappointed you about The Dark Side of the Game?
Too generic not in depth. Who really cares about all of the problems in the NFL. Most of the players are a bunch of children in mens bodies. Overpaid whiners.
Has The Dark Side of the Game turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No
Would you be willing to try another one of Tim Greens performances?

    A First-rate Craftsman and Colleague
Simply first-rate writing combined with first-rate whimsy. For full disclosure, we were colleagues at the NYT, but I never came close to
his wry humor--a combination of bucolic innocence with a razor-sharp rapier. With some disgruntled colleague he frequently helped with wise, fraternal counsel. A generous chap indeed.

    Publisher's Summary:
Against a richly detailed backdrop of history, the story of this unique American family unfolds. It begins with John D. Rockefeller Sr., who amassed a fortune amid the muck and disorder of the Pennsylvania oil fields and left his son to deal with the public outcry. It follows Rockefeller Jr. as he built the charities and foundations that made the name a public institution. And it tracks the lives of the 5 Rockefeller brothers. Here then is Laurance, clever and charming as a youth, burned out and cynical by middle age; Winthrop, the shy, awkward, black sheep who finally made a mark for himself in the eyes of everyone but his family; JDR3, introverted and anxious even after years of proving himself; David, a man on the move who took the nation's front-ranking bank and made it number 3; and Nelson, ambitious, aggressive, the brother who broke the unwritten family code.

    Too Long
When I started reading the book, I was thrilled with the fact that I am reading about Mr. Rockefeller, the person who created Standard Oil. Little did I know that the book deals more with the lives of the other members of the Rockefeller family. The lives of John D Rockefeller (Senior as well as the Junior) is only around 40% of the entire book. It deals with the four generations of Rockfellers. I found the book a bit lengthy and at times boring as it went too much of detailing. Read it, keeping in mind that you are not only reading about the person who created Standard Oil, but about three generations on how the 'Oil Money' impacted their lives.
    A hard listen
This book was disappointing on a couple of levels. 1) the target was too broad and therefore the level of detail insufficient, 2) the presentation was the worst I have ever heard. Chronic editing problems where the performer spoke softly while reading the majority and then would get this blaring voice in voice-overs where he didn't. Further, the reading in my mind wasn't fully appropriate as he switched to his..."lesser" voice when reading quotes from certain people, certainly several of the Rockefellers, but also all women. The voice that is put on is whiny and unpleasant, which for the first many hours you think is his projection of an opinion of Jr., but later learn it's an artifact of the presentation which changes the emotional reaction to certain characters in an unfortunate way.
    A flashback to the '70s
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
    Would not recommend.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The first and second chapters, covering the rise of John D. Rockefeller and "Junior" were very well done. The sections covering the third and fourth generation were much more diluted. The people were far less interesting and yet they were given as much attention as the truly great John D and Junior.
Did Michael Anthony do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, although I can't explain "how." I could always tell when and which character was talking.
Do you think The Rockefellers needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Hard to say whether or not a follow-up is necessary.

    Good read
This was interesting on many levels. Yes it went in detail about Cee-lo, it is a biography, but he did it in a very entertaining way, as if telling a fairytale. Another interesting point is the many other stars he knew and hung out with and grew up with before they too were stars. It makes you wonder what they put in the water in that neighborhood. If you're interested in Cee-lo or music in general, this would be a good read to check out.
Great book, except for the missing chapter
I'm a big fan of Cee Lo Green so I was excited to hear he was coming out with a book. It's a great read, I learned many things about him that I didn't know. If you are a Cee Lo fan, or maybe even mildly curious about him, you should check it out. I might have given this book 5 stars if not for a missing chapter. The chapter describing his writing and recording The Lady Killer album is missing. Instead, a previous chapter was repeated in it's place. Very odd. Am I the only one who has a copy like this?
CarLo is just as cool as I thought
I bought this book because I've been a fan of his since his time with Goodie Mob. This book took me on the journey of his beautifully interesting life and the many ways he's found the good in an unpredictable world. There are so many facets to this "mutant" man and I encourage everyone to read this book and take the journey with him.
"CRAZY" GOOD BOOK! LOVE HIS "VOICE"
This is a "Crazy" good book by one of the most interesting and colorful characters around these days. It's also an inspiring look at how an underdog overcame huge odds and rose right to the top and shared his powerful voice with the world.
    Amazing
This book shared so much about Ceelo Green that I didn't know. I had heard his music and seen him on the Voice, but this is the first time I read anything personal about him. The tone of the writing sounds just like the way he speak. You can't help but feel awed and inspired by him.

Length: 5 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-14-08
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios
    Publisher's Summary:
He was the Golden Boy of the Golden Age. A prince of the silver screen. Dashing and debonair, Tony Curtis arrived on the scene in a blaze of bright lights and celluloid. His good looks, smooth charm, and natural talent earned him fame, women, and adulation. Elvis copied his look and the Beatles put him on their Sgt. Pepper album cover. But the Hollywood life of his dreams brought both invincible highs and debilitating lows.
Now, in his captivating, no-holds-barred autobiography, Tony Curtis shares the agony and ecstasy of a private life in the public eye.
No simple tell-all, American Prince chronicles Hollywood during its heyday. Curtis revisits his immense body of work, including the unforgettable classics Houdini, Spartacus, and Some Like It Hot, and regales readers with stories of his associations with Frank Sinatra, Laurence Olivier, director Billy Wilder, and film industry heavyweight Lew Wasserman, as well as paramours Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe, among others.
As forthright as he is enthralling, Tony Curtis offers intimate glimpses into his succession of failed marriages (and the one that has endured), his destructive drug addiction, and his passion as a painter.
Written with humor and grace, American Prince is a testament to the power of living the life of one's dreams.

    Interesting stories, but...
Tony Curtis' heyday was a little before my time, but his stories of famous people he knew in Hollywood in the 40's, 50's and 60's were very interesting. However, at the end, I couldn't help but think Tony Curtis just isn't that likeable of a guy. He had a tough childhood, to be sure. I guess because of that, he did not seem to be able to connect emotionally with any of his ex wives, or his children. To this day he has very cool relations with his grown children. He admits he wasn't a very good, or available, dad, but it is disconcerting to hear him mention *twice* in the book that one of his ex wives, Janet Leigh, filled their daughters heads with negative comments about him, and claims that's part of the reason he has a poor relationship with them today, decades later. At 80 something years old, it's time to take full responsibility for these relationships, or lack of them, as the case may be, and stop blaming your ex. He mentions the births of his children only in passing, and very little about them as little children, but goes into great detail about his many, many affairs. That probably tells you where his priorities were. He admits he sometimes didn't see his children for months. He also had no problem cheating on his wives, even when he was newly, and still happily, married. He mentions one of his wives cheating on him and being very upset when he found out. He admits he cheated as well, but somehow his cheating wasn't so bad because he was "discrete". It's probably no surprise he is currently on his fourth marriage.
The stories he tells about the famous people he knew are interesting, but Tony Curtis himself? Not so much.
    Loved it!
This is a tell all. You will get all the interesting previously unknown happenings in Hollywood. Can't believe Janet Leigh pushed and pinched Tony Curtis as they were walking on the red carpet just because he paused to be photographed, and she wanted to keep walking.
