Excellent!

If you only buy one book, this the only self improvement book you will need. I may give it to my adult children for Christmas. I give them at least one really good book and it is usually a book that I think is destined to be a classic. This is definitely one that is in that category.

I would definitely listen to The Payoff Principle again. In fact, I bought the Audible version after having read the hardcover edition. I listen to it in the car on the way to work and I can't think of a better use for that time.

This is one of those books that is so jam-packed with wisdom and usefulness, that it bears a second (or third) experience.

I can think of a couple dozen different book to which The Payoff Principle would loosely compare, but most notably books like "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" or "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living," or even "The Success Principles."

Great book

Easy to read, clear tips, examples and steps for improvement in each chapter. I have already implemented some of the suggestions and feel that it has made a difference to my approach to work and group situations.

Required reading if you want to be heard

Taking the Stage is a wonderful "how to" for women who want to confidently speak up in all situations, professional and personal. This is a real masterpiece of insight, wisdom, guidance and inspiration for women of all ages - a game changer for women who want their voices to be heard. This book is long overdue.

Some Good Points

I'm a bit on the fence about this book. I think it contains some really helpful advice and it gave me pause for thought more than once. But does it really help ME? Not really. You see, this is geared more toward women in business, women who have to attend meetings, give speeches, etc. What they need is a "blue-collar" edition of this book. As an aviation mechanic who has all male bosses, I was hoping to gain some insight into how to deal with them, how to get pay raises based on my performance, how to demand equal treatment, how to make my voice not just heard, but listened to. I'm not afraid to speak up, but am I speaking effectively?

According to this book, no, I'm not. I use too many "pointless" words like "quite" and "just". And hey, I watch a lot of BBC. The way I speak isn't going to change.

I also don't hobnob with the bosses often enough if chapter four is anything to go by. I felt like chapter four was basically telling me to brown nose. Talk to those with the power. They are the ones that can help you.

Great Book if this was the year 2000

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

While there are a couple of key fundamental points that can apply to today's market, the majority of examples are extremely dated (e.g. failure of Walmart.com, and Walmart not having an online presence). Most of the examples and guidance provided in this book are extremely general, and Mr. Cohan refers to "the Internet" like its a foreign object from outer space.

Could have been a lot better.

This book was filled with more websites and technologies than actual advise on starting your own business. Mostly relevant to the UK market.

Dangerously dreadful.

If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

This is a cosy over the fence book of neighbourly natter ideal for somebody who's happy just dreaming about starting their own business but never will. It eagerly cites notorious scams and age old dead end endeavours as bright new opportunities with tremendous potential. It seems the research put in for this trip to the financial gallows extended no further than cutting and pasting from exuberant adverts promising $$$$s a day in spare time earnings.

Not only does Emma Jones have no experience of the fields she promotes, she evidently has never spoken to anybody who has either. All I learned from this book is that anybody can write a book on any subject and sell it on-line under the guise of expert advice.

There are plenty of good step by step books on starting up. This is not one of them.

What could Emma Jones have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Emma Jones should be sentenced to having to engage in some of the hopeless business practices she encourages other to pursue. At least then, having wasted her own time and money she might have something to offer, at least in terms of caution.

Most often there is more to a successful business than determination and positivity. No, failure is not an option, this is true. If it was no one would choose to experience it. Failure is however a consequence; usually of poor research and a refusal to face facts.

started out ambitiously. faded and failed at end

this happen to be the second Michael Nir audible book I listened to today without realizing it. this book started out ambitiously - aiming to talk about agile, key competencies focused on the product lead , visiting several interesting topics like influencing, change mgmt, etc, and also how agile can and does at times work with traditional command and control organizations via a hybrid approach, which resonated with me as I had such experienced. however the last several chapters became a recital just rattling off difference SDLC methodologies, without any depth on them, which could have easily been left as an appendix as it didn't tie on to the book well. overall, 3.5 stars for strong substance in the first half, and weak content in the second half. narrator is female and did a good job, with plenty of enthusiasm in her voice that kept me engaged until the rattling SDLC chapter.

I enjoy Agile coaching. While I may use several styles to accomplish tasks, Agile is by by far my favorite method for efficiency!

Great to understand roles and responsibilities

Very simple, to the point and without too many elaborate stories. One thing missing is the information on how to write good epics, stories or PRDs.

If you could sum up How to Beat Wall Street in three words, what would they be?

A sensible approach to investing - no get rich quick ideas here - no just - sensible but vital information that any investor should turn to, to get better returns from their investing strategies.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The mix of both technical analysis and fundamentals are well weighted - this is important especially for new investors (before they pick which of the 2 paradigms to follow).

There is a place for both strategies - you can be a better investor by reading the chapters especially on market ratio timing!

Any additional comments?

The author has done a great job to get all the information an investor will need. Its up-to you to put the systems to work - reread chapter 1 and 5 twice then repeat every 2 months - it will save you so much time and money - if only this book had been out 10 years earlier .

Compilation of investment conventional wisdom. Contrary ideas without any context. Reads like a glossary of terms and techniques, lacks the credibility of practice.
