Talk about battered women syndrome!

If you know anything about suicide rates in adolescents don't let your kids read these books! As an adult they make me want to hang myself! Story starts well but are continual mental and physical abuse of a teenager! I would rather my children read about SEX!

Ugh!!

Read first few books and like the story. Thought I would listen to the next too, but I hate the portrayal of the main character. She is pathetic and it is annoying. Too much to listen to much more of it. Really sorry I bought both books before listening.

couldn't put it down

The story is much darker and more action - filled but also more enrapturing than the first in this series. The mysteries, betrayal and hopes are fluidly woven and evolving. I could not put it down and am getting book 3 right away. I found the writing to be a bit repetitive at times and didn't like how weak Jocelyn was ok in several parts but I liked watching her grow and unravel more of her life, friends and purpose. The audio narration was well done and the different character voices that helped portray the scenes. A great fantastical YA read but be warned it can be grotesque and dark and has a killer cliffhanger!

Great yarn and very well read

Superior reading makes this funny bit of magical realism all the more enjoyable. Would make a good intro to the world of audible books

Sometimes a train is just a train

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Sometimes a hole is just a hole. Sometimes a book is just meh.

If I were to choose one word for this novel it would be underwhelmed. If I were to choose two words for this novel the second would be cute. Cute works for puppies. It also works for babies. For me, however, cute doesn't work on its own for novels.

Look, I don't want to be too hard on Patrick deWitt. I really liked both 'Ablutions: Notes for a Novel' and 'The Sisters Brothers'. That is why I read the d@mn thing. And there were parts of it I liked. It just seemed a bit too trite, too uneven, boring, and again too cute. Even a candle in @ss (I won't delve deeper to ruin the surprise) in this book seems cute. The debauchery of castle elites just isn't what it used to be. The thrill is gone. The castles are closed. The holes hide no hermits.

So, if you've never read deWitt. Go read 'The Sister Brothers'. It is a better book and keeps the style, but drops the cute.

I wasn't a fan of any of the characters. The storyline was weak BUT it wasn't long.

LUST AND LOVE

Human lust and love simmer in Undermajordomo Minor. From a males point of view, Patrick deWitt has written a fantasy about an ancient time of castles, counts, and countesses reflecting on lust and love through the ages. The story suggests men are liars, and women are enablers; with the sexes meeting in lust and, at least in one case, growing into love.

The main character is a man named Lucy. Listeners meet Lucy as an unloved child nearing death. Lucy is visited on what appears to be his deathbed by a mysterious stranger that asks him what he wants out of life. Lucy says he wants something different.

Better and Better

The new narrator is excellent! Love the complexity of the Athanate world. Amber, the main character is someone that I can cheer for and cry for. As the peripheral characters develop the story gets deeper and deeper. Again the female characters are well defined and muli-layered! Cannot wait for Bian's Tale!

Book 2 Amber Farrell: The family comes to come together.

There is lots of action and gun play in this 52 chapter book. Amber begins to deal with being both vampire and werewolf. Supposed to be impossible but there she is with it. The book adds more mystery and fun times as she weaves between vampire politics and trying just not to get killed by the bad guys for her blood. Plus not to have sex with any one girl or werewolf because of her blood and a promise. It is tough being Amber.

Excellent audiobook for a fantastic series.

This audiobook is of a novel that I've read a handful of times via my kindle. The reading was articulate, and the verbal characters distinctive. The action scenes described in an appropriate manner that ensured vivid visualization. There were even a handful of unexpected verbalizations that had me laughing out loud.

The only issue I noted with the reading was the occasional sound of Julia swallowing. At first, these seemed to detract from the reading, but as the book progressed, I found them to be an enjoyable addition to the overall narration.

I highly recommend this audiobook and place in within my top five favorites of all time. Enjoy!

Wonderful!

Narrator Julia Motyka really nails all the characters, especially Amber. The story is not your normal paranormal girl meets boy. There is a full complex story going on here. I have all the books in print so far and will be getting all the audio books when they come out.

Mark keep on writing in this series!

This series and the narrator are extraordinary. Action packed all the way through. Ambers house is coming together nicely. And isnt Skylar quite the mastermind. Gotta keep it short. Palma r itching to get on to the next audiobook. Come along for the ride why dont ya.

This is apparently the author's first voice-over, and what a great job! He understands his characters well enough to breathe not only life into them with the spoken word, but depth. I Ilistened to Stone Man before this, and it was just as good. I'm a fan of yours, good sir!

This is my second Luke Smitherd audiobook (LOVED The Stone Man) and I can't wait for more. He has a fantastic imagination and you will get lost in the strange worlds he creates. If you like horror, mystery, and/or science fiction, his books are the perfect blending of them all. The only small, small downside here is that some of the lines repeat in the recording - not sure why. But don't let that stop you.

This entire series.These 8 deliciously wonderful and undeniably brilliant undead diary books were/are/forever shall be, the absolute best series I have ever laid ears on. I apologize for the bad pun but, I'm visually impaired and I just couldn't resist. Anywho, if you have read the entire series that's great but, these books scream out to be listen too. Why is that you say? Well, (heavy sigh) Chris Philbrook and by extension the narrator James (what a performance) Foster fit together like a hand and glove. The character development is serious, seamless and deep. On occasion I cried a wee tear or twelve, laughed harder than I thought possible, and I even puzzled (sometimes out loud) with various characters when the tough or delicate questions were asked. The story development did not falter from one book to the next. I love these books and will always have them primed and ready to listen to them again and again. So a big shout out to Chris Philbrook for writing and developing this most awesome series. And another goes out to James Foster for bringing these most awesome books to life. So Audible members give these books a listen. You will never be disappointed.

Not what I expected

From the publisher's summary, I expected most of the story to take part in the past, but the opposite is true. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not in top 10, but in top 30 for sure. Fascinating historical story, with a contemporary spin. Characters were well drawn, and story moved fast enough to retain listener interest.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Eternal World?

The conquistador scenes are powerful, and the cocktail party incident is compelling.

What does Tom Perkins bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Fully baked characterizations, consistently drawn and voiced. First novel I have heard him read I believe, and he made a believer of me.

This offering is both simple in it's concept, and yet complex in it's details and development. It really does grow on you, and the pay off is never clear until the very end, which is always entertaining. Highly recommended!

Christopher Farnsworth always delights me.

His books always keep me interested no matter what the story. I personally enjoy the mix of fiction and history.

The narrator was house as well.

I really liked it.

This was an interesting premise for a book. It jumps back and forth in time so that's the one thing I'd caution about since if you aren't paying attention you might lose track for a second which time you're in. (I usually work while I listen)

The best part of the story was that the people you would normally have listed as bad - weren't exactly. Also the people who you expected on the "good" side weren't always good. Oh, there were a few that were bad all through but they weren't any of the main characters. It was written so you could see both sides of the story, both good and bad but no one really had any pure motivations. I like that in a book because it makes people seem real.

Why oh why did you change narrator?

I adored the first book in this series and quickly devoured it. Since then I have listened to it twice more. However this one let me down. What happened to Gus? He went from the sexy sounding guy to I don't know what. The part in the book when they kiss...all of a sudden it was icky as the image of Gus in my head had completely changed from hot, sexy guy to the uncle that gives you the creeps. Several other characters also changed but I was more forgiving of those.

Other than Gus's massive change, I liked the story once again and will be buying the next in the series (hopefully with the original narrator). Christiana Miller is a fabulous tale teller and I very much enjoy her work.

Probably not, there were way too many turns, it could've been less complicated.

What didnt you like about Barbara Benjamin-Creels performance?

She did not have much range with her voices -- the Italian/Latin characters sounded as if they were from Germany & what I disliked the most was Gus's voice. He is a gay guy from LA, not the clown in Stephen King's book IT. I didn't particularly like Marie Rose's rendition of Gus in the first book but it was better than this rendition.

Story may have been good but the characters voices are just stupid. In the first book with a different narrator it was smooth and enjoyable but now they just don't work.
