Average and a little pretentious

AVERAGE - There wasn't a lot of "aha" moments in the book where I felt like the author was giving any new insight. In general, the book described some very good examples of how long term thinking will result in new, bigger, and better innovation. It also explained how someone should think in order to overcome short term thinking. The perspective of a neuroscientist explaining the reason why long term thinking was different. Anyone with sufficient experience working with people and setting objectives will already know everything talked about in the book. Understanding the evolutionary reasons why groups behave that way was interesting, but not necessarily useful. From a content perspective I give 3-4 stars.

PRETENTIIOUS - I think my perspective might have been totally different if I read this instead of listened to it. The author of the book is a man with 30 years experience in a vast array of industry after recieving a doctorate. The reader sounds 18 at most. Unfortunately, when an 18 year talks with what might be called prestige in a middle age man, I automatically think: "prick". So the tone of the book starts off bad. In general I felt like the book was a little pompous. The author told many stories of success where the main characters always "intuitively" understood what only the could understand scientifically. It always seemed like everyone else was just lucky in their ventures for long term improvement while Haseltine was making his own luck. 2-3 stars for tone.

Overall 3 stars at best.

OK if you like the military

I was overwhelmed with military stories, much of which I didn't care about. I thought this was a business book, but it's more of a book about the military. Narrator was very boring - no charisma. Had to fight hard to finish it.

Short and SWEET!

I like the fact that this man get straight to the heart of what a vision is. Too often authors use so many more words and stories and this and that than is necessary. I listened and took notes in one sitting. Now I have the basic ingredients for leading a team. It's time to get in the kitchen and start cookn!

Anyone who wants to build a team of folks that believe and are gonna fight for a cause needs to understand the things contained in this audio. I hope the time is now for you!

Pretty Boring

This audio has a strong and repititive message: persistence pays off. However, it's the delivery that is lacking. The audio is a stream of unknown people telling their stories of persistence- from the man who got a divorce and later remarried, to a woman who was temporarily paralyzed. These stories are somewhat lacking because they are often hard to relate to. Furthermore, in the middle of one story, the narrator cut out and another story simply and akwardly began without finishing the previous story. It was bizarre. Anyway, in summation, I wish I had not wasted my credit on this book.

Do yourself a favour and buy a meal instead

The audio is horrible, it sounds like someone made this sitting in his basement. You can hear him moving away from the mic to get something while reading, and one reader actually forgets their script and the audio ends there. Quite a rip off.

Scratched the surface

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Instead of providing specific leadership techniques, this book provides an overview of the fact that leadership techniques need to be adjusted based on the situation and an overview of those situations. An important concept, but this book only scratched the surface of that idea instead of providing leadership techniques for each situation.

This book survived all eight rounds of elimination by the panel of national experts assembled by the California Association of Tactical Officersto identify the top twelve books recommended for SWAT team leaders. The book is one of those rare âeasy readsâ that is also well-organized and simple to follow. It is one of the very few books I value enough to own in every format; hard copy, audible and ebook.

A big warm load of you know what

It's like this. You have these two American educated foreign nationals who think that their native countries are going to soar past the rest of the world, and any "Global" company that doesn't pander to the micro-markets of India and China, and supply products and services to those people will lose out big time. Bullocks, that is what I have to say about their thesis.

The number one rule of microeconomics is that businesses run on the margin. The authors advice is to ignore the margins and invest exorbitant time and money to exploit micro-margins of the emerging middle class in both India and China. Their warning is that "Global" companies that don't pander to emerging micro-markets in China and India will meet their doom. To tell MNC's that if they don't spend exorbitant amounts of time and capital developing these micro-markets that they will lose out, doesn't make any sense. Even if they jump in to the micro-markets in India and China feet first there is still no guarantee that they will win. Companies that stick to the highest paying market segments are companies that win. This is simple intuition. Companies or individuals for whom it is beneficial to exploit micro-markets will do so, and they will receive a benefit for doing so, but like the old micro-economic business adage states "businesses are run on the margin", and this reality will dictate what markets businesses invest in, not the bad advice of two economic hacks looking to make a quick buck selling a book with bad advice in it.

These authors are hyping their respective countries with the idea that global markets are a zero sum game. They are under the single minded impression that a lack of eagerness in developing micro-markets at an exorbitant cost to the "Global" companies will doom companies in irreparable ways. This is simply not true nor is it viable.

In the 1980's there were a dirth of books touting the doom of American and other multinational companies that would occur as a result of the enormous growth of Japanese companies. Most of these predictions are laughable nowadays. That is the thing about books like these and predictions like those made by the authors, most often they are wrong. These authors and their predictions will end up on the same scrap heap as similar books written by people in the 1980's. The main reason is that India and China are completely reliant on exports to America for their respective economic growth. That is fine and dandy until America reaches its saturation point with Chinese and Indian products.
