    Publisher: Gildan Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Business leaders are in charge. They are in charge of people, of budgets, of production lines. Most leaders also believe that they are in charge of their greatest resource - their own brain. But how true is that?
The more we understand about how the brain works, the clearer it becomes that our brain often kicks in before we do. For example:
The good news is that leaders can use what researchers have learned about the brain to manage their own brains more effectively. That's the first Brain Advantage. Just as important, leaders can use that knowledge to manage other people more effectively. That's the second Brain Advantage.
The Brain Advantage does for business leaders what few have time to do for themselves. It combines the latest brain research with insights from psychological studies of how people think. It uses powerful stories to convey that information.
    Critic Reviews:
"There has been so much on the brain and how it affects our behavior. Finally, here's an audiobook that gives a one-two punch - a quick 'so what' on brain research and a set of actions that produce better leaders. Well done!" (Craig Wortmann, CEO, Experience LLC. Adjunct Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. Craigwortmann.com)

    Bold Enough & Brave Enough
"What's Holding You Back?" That's the question that compelled me to buy this book. As a manager at a thriving small company, I feel I am doing a respectable job, but am also aware that there are areas that could use some improvement. This book has given me practical tools to assist with this.
"Gutsy." That's what Herbold says is required in order to achieve leadership excellence. At the beginning of the book, Herbold says that "Effective leaders must be bold enough and brave enough to make tough choices," and that a lot of managers face these tough issues and "waffle." It's true, I've seen this happen within my own company and I read about it happening a lot these days, especially with high-profile CEOs who may have avoided their downfall had they applied Herbold's 10 principles.
On his watch, Microsoft saw a four-fold increase in revenue and a seven-fold increase in profits. Before that, he was a top executive at Proctor & Gamble. His case studies are relevant and back each point he makes throughout the book. It's a straightforward, no-nonsense read that anyone who calls him or herself a "leader" should add to their collection.
    Herbold is a gifted communicator
Bob is able to put the 'cookies' on the lowest shelf for the reader. He's great at communicating what we need to hear from a business practices point of view as well as stressing that we need to move forward with tough decisions that we know we need to be made.
purchased 2 to give to org pres

yes, it has points that good
A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way
That's what leadership expert John Maxwell believes. So do I. So does Bob Herbold.
I read Herbold's "Seduced by Success" and then loaned it to everyone who would oblige in my office. When I heard about this, Herbold's latest, I ordered it.

Unfortunately, as management experts Chris DeRose and Noel M. Tichy explain, most organizations don't know how to evaluate the risk of giving employees more autonomy. Many of those who are willing to try haven't even invested resources in ensuring that - once the shackles are off - front-line employees make good judgments.

    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Moving beyond mere tolerance, us-versus-them is the costly mind-set in which organizations, communities, and whole nations too often find themselves trapped. In fact, recognizing difference as a positive force can bring astonishing value to even the most diverse organizations. In Us Plus Them, leadership scholar Todd Pittinsky introduces a groundbreaking new science of diversity that:
Through a wide range of examples - from Maine and Michigan to Rwanda and Bhutan, and from small-town classrooms to corporate boardrooms - Pittinsky opens our eyes to misunderstood yet useful aspects of us-and-them relations, including many of the neglected positive dimensions of difference. He provides a bold new assessment of the popular and scientific approaches to the issue, proving that its time to move beyond mere tolerance to build communities in which the two sides of the us-and-them equation engage each other because they both want to.
Much as Martin Seligman and positive psychology have shifted the focus from mental illness to mental healthiness, this audiobook shifts our mind-set to diversity as a positive force. Understanding the science and practical use of that energy will help us build the schools, neighborhoods, companies, and nations we want, and not simply avoid the ugliest problems of the past. Pittinsky shows us that our great diversity experiment hasnt failed - it hasnt even begun.
    Critic Reviews:
"In Us Plus Them, Todd Pittinsky has crafted an important work of scholarship on how leaders can address differences in our diverse and multicultural societies. His bold what if questions could change the course of history. Title: The American Leadership Tradition
Subtitle: Moral Vision from Washington to Clinton

    Narrator: Jeff Riggenbach
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-29-12
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
How much does character affect leadership? Most Americans believe a presidents private activities bear little relation to his public-policy decisions. Yet we also believe that moral vision plays a role in strong leadership. Marvin Olasky systematically examines the bond between morals and politics in the lives and careers of thirteen noted American leaders. From George Washington, Henry Clay, and Booker T. Washington to Woodrow Wilson, John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton, Olasky looks closely at the connections between religion, sexual practices, and political decisions. Through these examples, Olasky demonstrates how a mans character shows its stamp repeatedly during a career. He argues that while faithfulness in marriage may be no guarantee of faithfulness to the country, faithlessness is a leading indicator of trouble.

Excellent Survey of US Political Leaders for a Naturalized Citizen
For a naturalized citizen of the United States who had no background in the US political history while growing up in a foreign country, this book is exactly the right one for me at this juncture of my life since retirement more than two years ago. As a student of Western civilization in general and US history in particular, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book which provides a survey of ten US presidents and three political/social/economic leaders in terms of their ethical and theological background. "Every president sets up expectations for his successors. A president seen as having high moral character raises the bar for his successors, and the reverse is also true. A series of outstanding presidents increases the likelihood of the populace demanding another outstanding leader, and the reverse is also true." The latter part of this statement has been demonstrated in the recent US history from John Kennedy to Bill Clinton and now from Bill Clinton to Barack Obama. "Every president who speeds up the downward slide makes a return to earlier and high standards more difficult. â Before Americans can succeed in placing a moral leader at the top, we must develop a consensus on the importance of integrity; once that is in place, the likelihood of finding a person who can perform all of the presidential functions is increased.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Power of Social Innovation offers public officials, social entrepreneurs, philanthopits, and individual citizens the insights and skills to create healthier communities and promote innovative solutions to public and social problems. the Power of Social Innovation
This is an insightful look at impact investing from a cutting-edge leader in the field. Excellent, deep factual content, with clear focus on the dynamics of change. A must-read for social innovators.
A great tool to create permanent social change
The Power of Social Innovation is a delightful read that I would recommend to all. It offers an excellent analysis of the role that entrepreneurial citizens have taken and can take to provide solutions to many of the problems that we face in our society.
This book will open your eyes as to the great work that various individuals and service organizations have done to improve lives, as well as offering specific suggestions for the reader. For those that feel that the government too often fails as a social service provider, the book offers a blueprint to a more efficient, productive future; for those that feel that private industry is too focused on the bottom line, the book gives strong examples of client-focused entities that understand and react positively to the realities of life.
The Power of Social Innovation focuses on civic entrepreneurs as the solution to overcome many of the societal problems that we face and have been unable to solve. Unwilling to accept the status quo and unbending in their desire to create positive change, examples of these individuals and the promising work that they have achieved are presented in a greater `how to" framework that discusses the specific steps and measures that need to be established to create permanent change.
A key part of the book that resonated strongly was the section related to results and funding. In the past, social service providers have balked at change (especially change suggestions offered by the private sector), built significant barriers to entry, and created a political climate that protected their inefficient success. Overcoming each of those challenges require patience and strong belief that the existing system must and can change.
Civic entrepreneurs recognize this problem and voluntarily apply metrics to their work which is then published for public dissemination and analysis.
