People matter most, we all know that. But most companies would rather slash costs, cut headcount, replace well-paid employees with lower-paid employees or outsourced workers, and reduce customer service. In the wake of 9/11, Southwest Airlines was faced with a disastrous situation that threatened to ruin not only their business but the entire airline industry. In response, Southwest Airlines made three pivotal decisions: no layoffs, no pay cuts, and no-hassle refunds for any customer wanting them. The result: Southwest remained profitable, it was the only major airline to protect the jobs of all its employees, and Southwest's market cap soon exceeded all its major competitors combined.

    Members Reviews:
A Look Inside Some of History's Toughest Decisions
Taking you through some of the most challenging decisions and stories of the last 100 years, McCain gives unique insights into the decision making process and difficult choices made my some of the best known - and also little known - leaders of modern times. Whether a POW, a President, a business owner or a teacher, the lessons conveyed by this audio book were well received and truly made the reader think. A good addition to the leader's bookshelf or audio library.
great read of nonfiction, inspirational and idealistic book about leadership
This book is very pleasantly surprising, from the former Republican candidate for President. McCain, with collaborator Mark Salter, identifies the qualities he believes leaders need to make good decisions on important matters, then, after a brief definition (with specific examples) of the quality and why he considers it so essential to good "hard calls," he tells stories of several historical decisions that illustrate each quality, along with the character, biographies and accomplishments of those who made those decisions. The people he describes range from Churchill and Truman to Branch Rickey, "Ma Ellen" of Liberia, and Robert Gould Shaw; each of these people made crucial, hard decisions that affected many others beyond their own lives. The qualities McCain identifies are positive and surprising, including humility and inspiration. The stories are all inspiring. What a good, uplifting read!
    "Profiles in Courage" enhanced.
This is simply a great book almost entirely devoid of politics - except as relevant to the person's story. The people McCain chose are great and the way he ties a couple people events together is entertaining. I often buy several copies and send them to friends and family. And I ask them to pass them along.
    Wonderful
I found this to be filled with interestingly presented facts. I loved it. I play this disc when I travel and I have played it over and over because I am wowed by the information. My politics are different from John McCain's so I wasn't sure about purchasing this. However, now I buy the discs as gifts because it is a powerful gift. Those who have received it from me have complimented it also.
Great exploration of many men & women's addressing life's hard knocks.
McCain (& Salter) break down decision making skills into categories. He then profiles multiple men & women past & present, as to how they made the sometimes hard calls that life presents us. Some good decisions, some not so good, are both covered. A great guidance for adolescents and adults. McCain includes his own experience of being shot down and also gives some insight on how decisions are made within the political reality of being a member of Congress.

The Magic Question. A simple question every leader dreams of answering. David Cottrell.2013. ISBN 9780071806169.
    Six questions.
    What is really important?
    How am I doing?
    How is our team doing?
    Do you care?
    What difference do we make?
    Are you worth following?
Seems simple enough - but as you read through this book, few are doing this.
The idea of this book seems weak until you realize that only 5% of our population reads a book a month.
Add the challenges that Millennials seem to give to older managers and this book makes more sense.
Is it worth $16? Hard to say - and it will last about an hours flight at 97 pp. Could be awake up call for some.

    Author: Jim Anderson
    Narrator: Jim Anderson
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-26-13
    Publisher: Blue Elephant Consulting
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Anyone can manage IT employees. Due to the fact that the employees have agreed to work for the company, as their manager you hold the ability to fire them in your hands. If they don't do what you tell them to do, you have the right to terminate them. That's management, not leadership.
    What You'll Hear:
Leadership has to do with getting your IT team to WANT to do what you need them to do. When you are leading your team, when you are not around they continue to work towards the goals that you have established for the team because they believe in the goals and in you. Leadership is much more powerful than management.
Leadership is also much harder to learn how to do. It has a great deal to do with understanding what motivates the members of your team and then finding ways to associate the team's goals with what each member of the team is trying to accomplish in both their career and in their personal life.
Examples of how to be a better leader can be found in many different places. Not all of these examples come from within IT. As an IT manager you need to learn how to keep your eyes open so that you can spot and learn from the good examples of leadership that are all around us each and every day.
Understanding the various members of your team is a key part of knowing how best to lead them. This requires you to be socially intelligent and to have the ability to be "tuned in" to their needs.
This audiobook will provide you with numerous examples of good leadership. I'll be showing you the skills and talents that IT leaders must have in order to do a good job of motivating their team. Creating a culture of leadership will allow your team to achieve more using the resources that are available to you.
