"Readers who dont hang up... wont be able to stop listening." (New York Times)
Told in a free-flowing narrative style that features a number of memorable characters, Fantes novel is dark, bleak, gritty, and inventively vulgar. Its also honest, painful, and occasionally tender. (Booklist)
Fantes voice is strong, fun, smart and edgy and it makes 86d a great read. (San Francisco Book Review)

I didn't get too far into this book, excessive use of cuss words is just lazy writing. They should be used to really highlight a particular point of view, thought, subject, emotion, etc. if absolutely necessary. When they are used so often, they loose all impact. I can't rate this book officially because of this writing style. The subject matter was intreguing though. Maybe I will revisit it one day.
    not a bukowski
i lived it and finished quickly. but it is not a bukowski. it is missing the Oscar W. type details and descriprions which makes a difference in underground lit.

    Publisher's Summary:
A riveting novel that explores the high price of success in the life of one woman - the first female president of a lauded ivy league institution - and her hold upon her self-identity in the face of personal and professional demons, from Joyce Carol Oates, author of the New York Times best seller A Widows Story.
Mudgirl is a child abandoned by her mother in the silty flats of the Black Snake River. Cast aside, Mudgirl survives by an accident of fate - or destiny. After her rescue, the well-meaning couple who adopt Mudgirl quarantine her poisonous history behind the barrier of their middle-class values, seemingly sealing it off forever. But the bulwark of the present proves surprisingly vulnerable to the agents of the past.
Meredith M.R. Neukirchen is the first woman president of an Ivy League university. Her commitment to her career and moral fervor for her role are all-consuming. Involved with a secret lover whose feelings for her are teasingly undefined, and concerned with the intensifying crisis of the American political climate as the United States edges toward war with Iraq, M.R. is confronted with challenges to her leadership that test her in ways she could not have anticipated. The fierce idealism and intelligence that delivered her from a more conventional life in her upstate New York hometown now threaten to undo her.
A reckless trip upstate thrusts M.R. Neukirchen into an unexpected psychic collision with Mudgirl and the life M.R. believes she has left behind. A powerful exploration of the enduring claims of the past, Mudwoman is at once a psychic ghost story and an intimate portrait of a woman cracking the glass ceiling at enormous personal cost, which explores the tension between childhood and adulthood, the real and the imagined, and the public and private in the life of a highly complex contemporary woman.
    Members Reviews:
Descent Into Madness or Political Treatise?
Intrigued by the title and description of the book, I bought it. I then spent nearly 20 hours confused by the plot, which never really went anywhere. Meredith Ruth Neukirchen, known as MR, is the protagonist of this novel. Abandoned as a child, she slips on the name of her sister (for reasons we never entirely grasp) when she is saved, lives as a foster child under that name, gets adopted and is renamed for the dead child of otherwise seemingly decent Quaker parents, grows up and becomes the president of a well known university. Established in that position, we spend a year in that present space of time going back and forth into her life through dreams or memories. At times we have trouble distinguishing the past and the present. We take long trips into political jargon through her mind and the conversations of her colleagues. We learn about some secret lover that she maintains for 20 years; a story line never really resolved. We learn about her biological mother and piece by piece we watch MR go from the mud, at age 3, to the university presidency at age 40.
We figure out that MR is intelligent and at one time athletic. We also figure out that she is perceived as ugly, a notion she totally buys into. We want to believe she has a kind and generous spirit, but Oates doesn't ever quite push us over the edge onto firm ground where this is concerned.

    Title: Ragnarok
Subtitle: The End of the Gods

    Narrator: Harriet Walter
    Format: Unabridged

    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 59 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
In this brilliant retelling of the Norse myth about the end of the world, the award-winning author of Possession and The Childrens Book unleashes a story of the destruction of life on this planet and the end of the gods themselves. As the bombs of the Blitz rain down on Britain, one young girl is evacuated to the countryside. She is struggling to make sense of her new life, whose dark, war-ravaged days feel very removed from the peace and love being preached in church and at school. Then she is given a copy of Asgard and the Gods - a book of ancient Norse myths - and her inner and outer worlds are transformed. She feels an instant kinship with these vivid, beautiful, terrifying tales of the end of the gods - they seem far more real, far more familiar during these precarious days. How could this child know that fifty years on, many of the birds and flowers she took for granted on her walks to school would become extinct? War, natural disaster, reckless gods, and the recognition of impermanence in the world are just some of the threads that Byatt weaves into this most timely of books. Linguistically stunning and imaginatively abundant, Ragnarok is a landmark piece of storytelling from one of the most brilliant minds and speakers of our generation (The Independent). Just as Wagner used this dramatic and catastrophic struggle for the climax of his Ring Cycle, so A. S. Byatt now reinvents it in all its intensity and glory.
    Critic Reviews:
Color and sensation flood Byatts writing . . . One of the most brilliant minds and speakers of our generation. (Independent)
    Majestic . . . Dazzling . . . Wonderful . . . . What you see here . . . is the strength and fire of Byatts imagination. (The San Francisco Chronicle)
Bristling with life and invention. . . . A seductive work by an extraordinarily gifted writer. (The Washington Post)
    Members Reviews:
    What a great listen!
Would you consider the audio edition of Ragnarok to be better than the print version?
Both were excellent. The language is very rich. I enjoyed going back and forth between the two versions.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the way Byatt incorporated her growing up with the myths into the book. This added a whole new dimension that I wasn't expecting.
Have you listened to any of Harriet Walters other performances before? How does this one compare?
Walter was a new reader for me. Where has she been hiding? She was great. I just bought her version of Mansfield Park. I wish she had a bigger list of books. I hope to hear much more from her. She added tremendously to this audio.
    loved it
    A. S. Byatt is an excellent writer and I thoroughly enjoyed this. I like Norse myth anyway and thought it would be weaved into a modern story of some type, allegorically/symbolically etc. but was very pleased to hear a retelling of Norse myth, specially centered upon Loki and Ragnarok. I hope some day there will be some audio geared completely at Norse Myth but for now this is excellent. Byatt is stylistically very nice and the narrator nails the names and voice. I remember there was some Norse references in Possession which is a beautiful novel. I have read/listened to several Byatt, Possession, the Game, Matisse, Djinn and enjoy them all.

When it comes to heists, Parker believes in some cardinal rules. On this job, he breaks two of them: never bring a dame along - especially not one you like - and never, ever, work with amateurs. Nevertheless, with the help of a creep named Billy, and the lure of a classy widow, he agrees to set up a heist of a coin convention. But Billys a rookie with no idea how to pull off a score, and the lady soon becomes a major distraction. The Rare Coin Score marks the first appearance of Claire, who will steal Parkers heisters heart - while together they steal two million dollars worth of coins.
    Members Reviews:
    3 stars. Engaging.
Some slightly different characters this time.
Needy childlike Billy loves Claire the widow who sees Billy with contempt. This book was slightly above average but still worth reading because the series is great. I dont want to stop reading them.
The Forward by Luc Sante was insightful. A few of his comments follow, edited for brevity. When I read my first Parker novel, I was stunned. I imagined that I had stumbled upon a particularly brilliant specimen of a thriving genre. But I was wrong. There is no such genre... Stark said that he meant the books to be about a workman at work. Process and mechanics and troubleshooting dominate the books. Stark portrays a world of total amorality. It is never suggested in the novels that robbing payrolls or shooting people who present liabilities are anything more than business practices... As brilliant as Parker is as a strategist, he is nothing short of phenomenal at instantly grasping character. This means that he sometimes sounds more like a fictional detective than a crook. In order to decide which path the double crosser he is pursuing is most likely to have taken, or which member of the string is most likely to double cross, or the odds on a reasonable sounding job that has just been proposed to him by someone with shaky credentials, he has to get all the way under the skin of the party in question.
The narrator John Chancer was good. I liked his voice for Parker.
    THE SERIES:
This is book 9 in the 24 book series. These stories are about bad guys. They rob. They kill. Theyre smart. Most dont go to jail. Parker is the main bad guy, a brilliant strategist. He partners with different guys for different jobs in each book.
If you are new to the series, I suggest reading the first three and then choose among the rest. A few should be read in order since characters continue in a sequel fashion. Those are listed below (with my star ratings). The rest can be read as stand alones.
The first three books in order:
4 stars. The Hunter (Point Blank movie with Lee Marvin 1967) (Payback movie with Mel Gibson)
3 stars. The Man with the Getaway Face (The Steel Hit)
    4 stars. The Outfit.
    Read these two in order:
    5 stars. Slayground (Bk #14)
5 stars. Butchers Moon (Bk #16)
    Read these four in order:
4 stars. The Sour Lemon Score (Bk #12)
    2 stars. Firebreak (Bk #20)
(not read) Nobody Runs Forever (Bk #22)
2 stars. Dirty Money (Bk #24)
Others that I gave 4 or more stars to:
The Jugger (Bk #6), The Seventh (Bk#7), The Handle (Bk #8), Deadly Edge (Bk#13), Flashfire (Bk#19)
    GENRE: noir crime fiction.
Another great Richard Stark heist novel.
    Any additional comments?
The plan is secondary in this tale, it's more about the relationships and personalities. The Rare Coin Score was a fun read, plenty of twists.

    Publisher's Summary:
In this unique noir masterpiece by the incomparable Saul Bellow, a young man is sucked into the mysterious, heat-filled vortex of New York City.
Asa Leventhal, a temporary bachelor with his wife away on a visit to her mother, attempts to find relief from a Gotham heat wave only to be accosted in the park by a down-at-the-heels stranger who accuses Leventhal of ruining his life. Unable to shake the stranger, Leventhal is led by his own self-doubts and suspicions into a nightmare of paranoia and fear.

    Who's Fooling Who
One sultry summer in New York shortly after the end of the war, Asa Leventhal is left to his own devices when his wife, Mary leaves to tend to her mother down South. Asa is Jewish and writes for a trade magazine and is a self made man who has endured tough times but rose above them. During this hot, desultory time, Asa is accosted by an old, down on his luck acquaintance named, Albee. Asa is also helping, somewhat, to look after his brother's family while his brother works in another state. Max, the brother, has left behind two boys and his Italian wife, Elena. One of the boys is very sick and Asa takes ferry rides over to Staten Island to check on the family.
It becomes apparent that Albee is following Asa. Albee blames Asa for his downfall and his firing from a job in which he put in a good word for Asa, but Asa got caught up in a heated argument with the boss and the boss subsequently fired Albee. Albee is a pain in the you know what. He stalks Asa with no mercy. He ends up in Asa's flat. All the while, Asa questions his own actions in the downfall of Albee. Neither man can get a handle on his own actions and each blames the other for their frustration. Asa's stems from the fact that he endures endless quibs from people who are prejudice against his race (such as Albee) and also from the fact that he feels guilty for his moderate success when people like Albee fall from grace or maybe, never really had a chance. Anyway, as far as I can see, neither man can never really own up and it becomes a comedy of sorts with each man doing a dance. Albee dances around Asa saying he owes him, and Asa dances around saying that Albee is driving him crazy. As the days wear on, the heat is intense and these two imbeciles keep up their dance until the breaking point.
There is a lot of inner dialog in The Victim. Asa scrutinizes everything, especially his interactions with others-he is constantly questioning himself and other people in their meaning of a look, a gesture or in what they say-much like humans do every day. That is the appeal of this book and much of Bellow's writing. Bellow's writing is so dense that you really cannot skim or skimp, if you do, you'll be back pedaling to see what you missed. Writers of his talent are rare. I always enjoy reading his works. He includes a lot of details but the way he writes never bores me and I never skim or skip ahead no matter the description or detail.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I could read it again. If you are new to Saul Bellow, you might be better off to start with Henderson The Rain King as this is one of Bellow's earlier works and doesn't appeal to all. Bellow's characters are life like, which is why he was a winner of so many awards, including the Nobel Prize.

Imagine that a man who was once friendly suddenly spewed hatred. That a girl who flirted with you in the lunchroom refused to look at you. That your coach secretly trained soldiers who would hunt down your family. Jean Patrick Nkuba is a gifted Tutsi boy who dreams of becoming Rwandas first Olympic medal contender in track. When the killing begins, he is forced to flee, leaving behind the woman, the family, and the country he loves. Finding them again is the race of his life.
Spanning ten years during which a small nation was undone by ethnic tension and Africas worst genocide in modern times, this novel explores the causes and effects of Rwandas great tragedy from Nkubas point of view. His struggles teach us that the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit can keep us going and ultimately lead to triumph.
    Critic Reviews:
The politics will be familiar to those who have followed Africas crises (or seen Hotel Rwanda), but where Benaron shines is in her tender descriptions of Rwandans natural beauty and in her creation of Jean Patrick, a hero whose noble innocence and genuine human warmth are impossible not to love. (Kirkus Reviews)
Benaron accomplishes the improbable feat of wringing genuine loveliness from unspeakable horror . . . It is a testament to Benarons skill that a novel about genocide . . . conveys so profoundly the joys of family, friendship, and community. (Publishers Weekly)
First novelist Benaron, who has actively worked with refugee groups, won the 2010 Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction for this unflinching and beautifully crafted account of a people and their survival. In addition, she compellingly details the growth and rigorous training of a young athlete. VERDICT Readers who do not shy away from depictions of violence will find this tale of social justice a memorable read, and those interested in coming-of-age stories set in wartime will want it as well. Highly recommended. (Library Journal)

    Exclusively from Audible
Daphne du Maurier's The Scapegoat is a classic tale of stolen identity. As dark as it is witty, it introduces listeners to the gloomy and despondent character of John the Englishman. When by chance, John comes face to face with his French doppelgänger, Jean, his bewilderment is quickly replaced with envy. Realising that Jean is in possession of everything he lacks but has always desired, he assumes the identity of his look-a-like, leaving his old, tedious life behind.
As John's attempts to escape detection from Jean's family, servants and mistresses, he embarks on a captivating adventure in a charming Chateau in the French countryside, where a witty and enthralling tale ensues.
This critically acclaimed masterpiece was hailed by the New York Times for containing 'artfully compulsive storytelling' and highlighting Daphne du Maurier's skill with a pen.
Born in London and later educated in Paris, Daphne was always headed for artistic success, inspired by her father, the great actor Sir Gerald du Maurier. Writing short stories from a young age, Daphne honed her craft and eventually published some of the most influential English novels of our time.
Her best known works, Rebecca and The Birds were both taken on by Alfred Hitchcock and developed into award-winning films. These titles can also be found on Audible.

Yet to be disappointed by DuMaurier
Rebecca is still the pinnacle, but this one is excellent. Good story of a "mistaken" identity type that leads to more. Even when DuMaurier is writing more of a Romance type, which this is not, this is more of a mystery story, she is still a very good writer, not clunky like so many now. I have read/listened to many of hers and enjoyed them all, Hungry Hill and Mary Ann being least favorite so far. But I recommend this one to people after Rebecca, and then probably My Cousin Rachael.
If you want car chases look elsewhere, DuMaurier always leans heavily toward the character side and immerses you in her world.
    storytelling at its best
Fascinating story , draws you in, never lets you go. Sorry when it ended. Actor reading it was perfect
    THE UNBELIEVABLE IS BELIEVABLE
It seems impossible that an author could make one believe that a 'doppelganger' could so easily assume the role of another. How does an imposter play the role of father, brother and son, sign papers and so quickly 'know' the detail and history of a whole family? Ask du Maurier... This book could be viewed as bordering on science fiction.
