    Good Narrator
There seem to be three "unabridged" listings of this novel by Audible, presumably by different narrators. This one is very well narrated and the narrator captures that special atmosphere for which Conrad is noted in most of his fiction. I would rate this narration very high and a good representation of a novel I enjoyed reading years ago.
    Heart of Darkness Revisited
For a number of years, especially during my working years in the Niger Delta in the early nineties, I took a pocket book copy of the book with me wherever I went.
This book is relatively little known but it provided the inspiration for the very well known movie 'Apocalypse Now'.
The message of the book can easily be summarised as 'the downfall of the White Man in Africa', because it describes in depth what happens to a well educated and civilised western man, set loose without limits in a kind of self-created kingdom. Gradually, all self-control wears of and civilisation becomes but a shadow of its former self.
To those who have spent time in Africa, to those who like the flowery style of the early 1900's, this is a must-read. And the way in which it is brought on audio is very good indeed. None of the richess of the language and story content of the book was lost, and it was a pleasure to listen to. Most recommendable.
    A must read
I have read Heart of Darkness several times over the years, but never enjoyed it more than through this AudioBook. I can't compare this version to the others in Audible's collection, but I can say with certainty that this is one of the great short novels in the Western lexicon. It never fails to grip, yet as its title suggests, goes deeper and deeper in theme as it moves up the Congo. It is also surprising, and a little horrifying, how relevant it still is today. I found myself re-listening to several pages over and over, then playing them for my wife as well.
    FULL MARKS
In a word: superb. Ten out of ten for style, characterisation, narration. An Audible must listen.
    Fine Reading, Troubling Novel
This was the first time I have "read" this classic work, and it's something every literate and literary-minded person should read. But its imperialistic themes and colonial sentiments are hard to sympathize with nowadays, and I believe that it is often studied today more for the insights it gives us into late Victorian (1898) attitudes toward Africa than for the story itself. The listener should be forewarned that much of the language and imagery now seems quite racist. I greatly admire Ralph Cosham's narration, but it was hard for me to listen to him reading some of the passages in this novel, and I probably won't listen to it again. Having said that, it is indeed a classic and is worth experiencing for that reason.

    Publisher's Summary:
On a dim winter afternoon, a young Irish immigrant opens the gas taps in his Brooklyn tenement. He is determined to prove - to the subway bosses who have recently fired him, to his badgering, pregnant wife - 'that the hours of his life belong to himself alone'. In the aftermath of the fire that follows, Sister St. Savior, an aging nun, a Little Sister of the Sick Poor, appears, unbidden, to direct the way forward for his widow and his unborn child.
In Catholic Brooklyn, in the early part of the 20th century, decorum, superstition, and shame collude to erase the man's brief existence, and yet his suicide, although never spoken of, reverberates through many lives - testing the limits and the demands of love and sacrifice, of forgiveness and forgetfulness, even through multiple generations. Rendered with remarkable lucidity and intelligence, Alice McDermott's The Ninth Hour is a crowning achievement of one of the finest American writers at work today.

    Could not finish
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Found the narration too irritating- jerky cadence meant some words were swallowed and others hit hard and it gave a 'stop go' rhythm to the narration. Because of this I could not get a 'smooth' run at the story to find out what it was about.
How could the performance have been better?
    Smoother narration.

"You were adopted." These three simple words, in a letter accompanying her parents' will, tear Nisha's carefully ordered world apart. Raised in England by her caring but emotionally reserved parents, Nisha has never been one to take risks. Now, with the scrawled address of an Indian convent, she begins a search for the mother and family she never knew and the awakening of long forgotten childhood memories. The secrets, culture, and people that Nisha discover will change her life forever. And, as her eyes are opened to a side of herself she didn't know existed, Nisha realizes that she must also seek answers to the hardest question of all-why?
Weaving together the stories of Nisha, Shilpa, and Devi, The Forgotten Daughter explores powerfully and poignantly the emotional themes of motherhood, loss, and identity - ultimately asking the question, what would you do out of love for your children?

    somewhat confusing
What did you like best about The Forgotten Daughter? What did you like least?
It's a good story, however their are a lot of metaphors and similes layered one after another. So that the thread of the story slows incredibly and on an audiobook, it's very easy to get lost. Combined with the three different perspectives, I think this could be better in written form.
    Good story, but to long.
The story is interesting and well told, but the author spends an inordinate amount of time describing everything around the characters the entire book. Sights and smells are described in great detail, making the book unnecessarily much longer.
    drawn out
Hard to follow for several chapters...some parts too drawn out....I did struggle to finish,.
    Brilliant!
Brilliant book, full of emotion. I loved it! Be ready to shed a tear or two.
    Big On Description
Good enough story subject reasonably narrated. I found the endless, endless descriptions of everything tedious and boring especially toward the end of the book. Nesha's sudden ability to remember everything that she had forgotten prior to adoption (with vivid accuracy) was a bit unrealistic, I was also wondering who was funding the hospital bed if ma was so poverty stricken. The recipes are good I tried a couple.

    Publisher's Summary:
Big-hearted, moving and richly rewarding, That Deadman Dance is set in the first decades of the 19th century in the area around what is now Albany, Western Australia. In playful, musical prose, the book explores the early contact between the Aboriginal Noongar people and the first European settlers.
The novel's hero is a young Noongar man named Bobby Wabalanginy. Clever, resourceful and eager to please, Bobby befriends the new arrivals, joining them hunting whales, tilling the land, exploring the hinterland and establishing the fledgling colony. He is even welcomed into a prosperous local white family where he falls for the daughter, Christine, a beautiful young woman who sees no harm in a liaison with a native. But slowly - by design and by accident - things begin to change.
Not everyone is happy with how the colony is developing. Stock mysteriously start to disappear; crops are destroyed; there are 'accidents' and injuries on both sides. As the Europeans impose ever stricter rules and regulations in order to keep the peace, Bobby's Elders decide they must respond in kind.
A friend to everyone, Bobby is forced to take sides: he must choose between the old world and the new, his ancestors and his new friends. Inexorably, he is drawn into a series of events that will forever change not just the colony but the future of Australia....

    Rhythmic Reading
It took a while to get into this book but soon I was drawn in by the tale of settlers and local people and how their lives ebbed and flowed in those early days. While the story covered the not uncommon themes of early settlement (land claiming, excessive whale hunting etc) it was not a story of execssive violence or hatred. Rather, it started as an unusually hopefull possibilty that both parties could get along and while tensions did simmer, the overall story was a more peaceful one. Not from Australia myslef, I was intrigued and reminded of the Aboriginal people's capacity to live off the land in such complete harmony. In contrast, I was appauled by the unknowing blundering of the settlers and their ability to quickly wipe out all chance of living off the land. And in this Aboriginal's tale, more than anything, I was aware of a rhythmic nature to the prose, like a poem or song, running along like a stream over rocks. It also highlights how, by example, local people could share one whale carcass for weeks in comparison to one settler's whale boat slaughtering tens of whales and processing and discarding them in mere days. The continual contrasts of this nature did not go unnoticed.
The book took me to a place of undulating beauty, gave me a keen sense of the seasons and what it means to live intiutiviely and in tune with nature ... and I wished that too could re-kindle that sense.
A thoroughly interesting and enjoyable read.
A piece of Australian literature that has great historical value...
That Deadman Dance by Kim Scott is the book that many readers (and Australians in particular) have been waiting for, perhaps without even realising it. Many authors have attempted to describe early settlement in Australia, but their efforts remain primarily from the European perspective. Scott, on the other hand, as the son of an Aboriginal father and English mother, was able to authentically deliver from both perspectives.
Kim Scott is no stranger to fame.

    Release date: 09-11-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride is inspired by "The Robber Bridegroom", a wonderfully grisly tale from the Brothers Grimm in which an evil groom lures three maidens into his lair and devours them one by one. But in her version, Atwood brilliantly recasts the monster as Zenia, a villainess of demonic proportions, and sets her loose in the lives of three friends: Tony, Charis, and Roz. All three have lost men, spirit, money, and time to their old college acquaintance, Zenia. At various times, and in various emotional disguises, Zenia has insinuated her way into their lives and practically demolished them.
To Tony, who almost lost her husband and jeopardized her academic career, Zenia is "a lurking enemy commando". To Roz, who did lose her husband and almost her magazine, Zenia is "a cold and treacherous bitch". To Charis, who lost a boyfriend, quarts of vegetable juice, and some pet chickens, Zenia is a kind of zombie, maybe "soulless" (Lorrie Moore, New York Times Book Review). In love and war, illusion and deceit, Zenia's subterranean malevolence takes us deep into her enemies' pasts.
    Critic Reviews:
"Moving amid these three women, touching up their portraits with one perfect detail after another, conjuring Zenia from their memories and tears, Atwood is in her glory. What a treasure she is, and what a fine new book she has written" (Newsweek)
    Members Reviews:
Another amazing book by M. Atwood
If you love Atwood's quirky style, you'll love Robber Bride. Not as off-the-wall as Handmaid's Tale, yet full of quirks and surprises. Atwood has managed to give us three strong protagonists to appreciate and an anti-hero who makes us shudder, all wrapped up in enticing detail. There aren't many men in this story, and they're not at their shining best, but that helps carry the plot.
This book is a test of your patience
Not your patience with the material, which is quite readable, but with one or more characters. Sort of like the film "Neighbors" staring Belushi and Ackroyd. Very grating, but in a "turn grating into an art form" way. Superb.
    A very complete book
Margaret Attwood writes such a beautifully constructed novel, colorful in ideas and language, of three ladies plus one, with the three joined in their disparity by a shared antagonism but perversely also love for the fourth. Myonly criticism of this book which I enjoyed enormously was that it might be considered a little too structured and possibly a little too predictable. But highly recommended.
It was nice to read something that required a little thought kept ...
Very intriguing the way the stories entwine. Usually I just read cozies and light little stories any more - old & tired :). It was nice to read something that required a little thought kept me reading.

    Members Reviews:
Don't Let the Title Fool You
Attention fans of the bodice ripper -- this is NOT historical fiction. If you are looking for petticoats and princes this is not for you. It's also NOT a romance, although there is a lot of sex.
I know it's very stylish to adore this genre of fiction, gritty and surreal. I found the main character in turns boring and annoying. Clearly many people are quite enthralled with this author - who am I to quibble?
Still I would like a book to educate me, challenge me or entertain me. Like a good Russian novel, this one mostly depressed me.
Despite all that, there is much craft here; well-writen and very nicely performed by Adam Grupper. Before you buy, just know -- it's for an acquired kind of taste.
