Format: Unabridged

Length: 11 hrs and 56 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-17-17

Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes

Publisher's Summary:

Camp Chippewa, 1962. Thirteen-year-old Nelson, loner and overachiever, is nicknamed the Bugler, as he proudly sounds the reveille each morning. This is the summer that everything changes, marking the beginning of Nelson's uncertain friendship with a popular boy named Jonathan and the discovery of his father's betrayal, which tears his family apart.

As time moves on, Nelson, irrevocably scarred from the Vietnam War, becomes scoutmaster of Camp Chippewa while Jonathan marries, divorces, and transforms his father's business. When something unthinkable happens during a visit from Jonathan's grandson and daughter-in-law, the aftermath tests the depths - and the limits - of Nelson's selflessness and bravery.

The Hearts of Men is a lyrical, wise and deeply affecting novel about the slippery definitions of right and wrong, family and fidelity, and the redemptive power of friendship.

Members Reviews:

A wonderful read

I eagerly awaited this novel after enjoying Nickolas Butler's former works. "The Hearts of Men" is ambitious storytelling with tender grace and excitement. The characters, which span four generations, are expertly crafted. In four interconnected parts, the story is always moving and fast paced.

This young writer has a brilliant future. His first three books are now some of my all time favorites. This new one met my high expectations, and then some.

Five Stars

One of the best books I've ever read.

Give it a shot!

Good read, although I was a bit disappointed with the lackluster ending. Rachel deserved a bit more after her experience.

Fantastic read!

Cannot wait until Nickolas Butler visits Westby WI in 2018!

Four Stars

compelling and thoughtful

Title: Craven House

Author: Patrick Hamilton, Will Self - introduction

Narrator: Charles Armstrong

Format: Unabridged

Length: 9 hrs and 6 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-06-17

Publisher: Hachette Audio

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Fiction, Literary

Publisher's Summary:

In Craven House, among the shifting, uncertain world of the English boardinghouse, with its sad population of the shabby genteel on the way down and the eternal optimists who would never get up or on, the young Patrick Hamilton, with loving, horrified fascination, first mapped out the territory that he would make uniquely his own. Although many of Hamilton's lifelong interests are here, they are handled with a youthful brio and optimism conspicuously absent from his later work.

The inmates of Craven House have their foibles, but most are indulgently treated by an author whose world view has yet to harden from scepticism into cynicism. The generational conflicts of Hamilton's own youth thread throughout the narrative, with hair bobbing and dancing as the battle lines. That perennial of the 1920s bourgeoisie, the 'servant problem', is never far from the surface, and tensions crescendo gradually to a resolution one climactic dinnertime.

Autor:: Gerhart Hauptmann

Erzähler: Hans Jochim Schmidt

Format: Unabridged

Spieldauer: 4 hrs and 13 mins

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 06-16-17

Herausgeber: Vorleser Schmidt Hörbuchverlag

Kategorien: Fiction, Literary
