Amazing condition

When the book arrived I was so pleased with it's excellent condition. This story was one that was a favorite of my children and now I can share it with my grandchildren.

I plan to give it to my 3 year old twins along with "spin wheels" so that they can enjoy learning about the wind and natural beauty.

What a great book!

I was told of this book by a friend at work as being his favorite book as a kid. My 5 year old son absolutely loved it! I highly recommend it!

I LOVE all of Beatrix Potter's stories

A true classic! I LOVE all of Beatrix Potter's stories! When I read her tales I'm transported to the world her characters live in and I'm joining in the characters adventures, especially Tom Kitten and his sisters. Who wouldn't love to be with them and the mischief they get into? I read this to my 7 year old niece and 5 year old nephew who absolutely loved the story. Yes, I did have to explain the meaning of some words to them, especially some British English, but they quickly caught on and were absolutely thrilled and delighted with the story and its characters. My only complaint with Beatrix Potter's books is with the small size of the pictures. I would love it if the publishers produced editions with larger pictures so children could better see the tale as it visually unfolds for them. It would also make it easier for us adults to show the pictures as we read the story to the little ones.

Exactly as expected and cute story

It was a small book, in lightly used condition, with the cute story of Tom Kitten. My baby is too young to appreciate it, but I liked it. I enjoy that it is a small book. Easy to read one handed and could fit in a diaper bag easy for travel.

this happened once and now I orchestrate it because it's just so cute:

I am reading to my daughter and I can't QUITE see the words since she's holding the book, but since we read this a lot, I know most of them. This conversation happens:

Me: They stopped and stared up at the kittens. They had very small eyes and looked surprised.

Magnolia: You wanna try again, mommy?

Me: hmm?

Magnolia: stood in a row

Me: (pushing the pages of the book so I can see better) They stopped and stood in a row and stared up at the kittens...

Magnolia: good job, mommy. That's better.

Beatrix Potter is a wonderful author! I definitely recommend these books for children. There are plenty to choose from as well! The book is around the size of an adult hand and is a hardback cover.

Tall Tale is a Winner!

This has become my favorite tall tale of all time! My kids, 9 and 12, loved this as much as I did. The folk art illustrations are perfect - you can get lost for days in all the artistic details and visual jokes. We are Tennesseans and the audio version is spot-on fun from the hills of TN (we know folks who really do say "barr" for "bear"!) Great match up of story, art, and audio.

When my daughter was little this was her favorite book. She wanted it read so often that she could recite it and turn the pages as if she was reading it by herself. Buy this for any new baby that arrives.

Beloved family favorite

Such fun -- "pigs from London, pigs from France, pigs in just their underpants" -- giggles galore. This book has become a family staple and has been enjoyed by grandchildren, and grand-nieces and -nephews alike. McPhail has a grand sense of humor and is an inspired illustrator. We're beginning to stock-pile copies -- it's that good.

sugary sweet and color overdose

For anyone who has read Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit, let me just say:

And Now For Something Completely Different!

There is no rabbit pie here, no angry farmer, just a perturbed (yet nonviolent) wolf. This Saccharin storybook presents an overly sweetened version of the history* behind easter egg hunts: a Santa-like bunny (with round-rimmed glasses, of course) named Peter Cottontail--no doubt capitalizing on the aforementioned classic--who brings baskets full of eggs and candy to all the good boy and girl bunnies.

*The real truth: it was a Pagan festival symbolizing the rebirth of the earth.

There is a villain in this story, but like Sam-I-Am's nemesis from Green Eggs and Ham, Willy Wolf ultimately sees the way:

"I like Easter. And I love Easter egg hunts! This is the best Easter I ever had!"

The challenge of finding the 76 hidden easter eggs throughout the pages of the book provides some staying power. This Scholastic paperback actually does have the tiniest of spines. Perhaps their Cartwheel Books imprint is a step up?

What Can I Say? "The Grannyman" Has Become A Favorite . . .

About twice a year my daughter (currently 3) and I take a train trip out to visit my family in the Mid-West. It is a long trip (about 15 hours), so I always pack one or two books which we have never read before. "The Grannyman" was my pick for our most recent trip. I must admit, I was a little worried about it at first (mostly because I'm extremely sentimental and can cry at the drop of a hat; there are a few children's books that I can't get through without weeping), but all of the good reviews convinced me to try it anyway, and I'm very glad that I did. The story of Simon (who becomes the Grannyman) is told with such gentle humor and understanding that one finds oneself smiling throughout the book (rather than feeling pity for the guy and getting all teary-eyed). Plus it highlights, without any preaching whatsoever, some good lessons for all of us to learn: regardless of age and condition, whether very old or very young (or somewhere inbetween), we all want to be needed and useful and loved . . . and we all deserve that.

At any rate, my daughter loved the story: we read it at least 10 times on the train (not including the times when she wanted to look at the book by herself), and it was THE requested story at bedtime every night we were away. I would recommend this book to anyone!

We have this and Bits and Pieces, which is about the kitten pictured when he is old. They are great books. My daughter adores adores them and likes to have them both read in succession, like chapters in a longer book. After reading lots and lots of Skippyjon Jones it is fun to have a little insight another side of Judy Schachner. They are great for the parents of a Skippyjon Jones fan who needs a Skippy break.

This Story is full of LOVE

This is a delightful story about a family cat that grows old and infirm, but becomes even more of a joy for the family......not going to tell you the ending. If you have a cat family you will love this tale. The pictures are great too and on every page. We have dogs, but my granddaughter wants a cat so badly. I decided to get her some cat tales since we can't have the real thing. This is one of her favorites. And yes, when our 5 little dogs have all passed, she can surely have her kitty.

The grownups and the children here like this book (but then we are Siamese people anyway!)

Gentle and Sweet

Wonderful story obviously written by someone who has been owned and loved by a Siamese cat. It was my son's favorite story for many years, and at 16, he still looks back on it fondly.

Love it... mostly.

I love the story here. Flossie - who "disremembers" ever seeing a fox - has to walk through the woods where a fox is to deliver eggs down the road. So naturally, when she sees a fox, she tells him he's all sorts of other things right up until she's safe through the woods and the hounds chase him. Seeing the little girl out-trick the trickster is *very* satisfying.

I also like the language - Flossie's speech is full-on in her dialect. (Note: Some people may not like this. If you get het up about the word "ain't" (spelled here "aine", so it's doubly nonstandard!) or double negatives, you will wish to read this book before you buy it.) For a five or seven year old girl, though, she sure does use big words! Confidencer, accord, disremember. And the fox, fitting his role, uses different language altogether, very formal and fancy and, at times, stiff.

The one problem I have with the book is the illustration. These pictures are detailed, lush, beautiful - and yet, I don't like them. I keep getting the feeling that I'm looking at posed pictures instead of what is ostensibly going on on the page! This is clearly just a matter of personal preference, but I took a a little off for it.

Good for Young Girls

This is a good bedtime story - not too long or short. Kids under six or seven probably will not be able to read along, though.It is a story about a clever girl who outwits a fox.

Wonderful story, beautifully illustrated

This is one of my favorite books to read aloud in my classroom. The story is rich and the illustrations are beautiful. Flossie is so witty and clever, and my students love how she outwits the fox in the end!

Fun read

I purchased this book to read to my 9 year old daughter. It is written in a southern tone and teaches an important message. My daughter loves hearing this story and looking at the pictures.

Awesome! Thus is a must-read for young girls and boys. This timeless classic will not disappoint. Children will love the Flossie character and her wit in outsmarting the fox. The colorful illustrations are warm and complement the characters very realistically.
