    Publisher's Summary:
The Liberator was a leading voice for abolitionism in the nineteenth century. Abolitionism called for the immediate emancipation of slaves, based on the principle that individuals own their bodies, labor, and the fruits of their labor. Abolitionists vigorously opposed gradualists, who called for phasing out slavery over a long period of time; they also opposed colonizationists, who wished to relocate former slaves to another country.

Excellent brief essays on landmark political works
In these essays, Wendy McElroy provides a concise but excellent commentary on these important works of political thought (in this series edited by George H. Smith).
"I have need to be all on fire, for I have mountains of ice about me to melt." -- William Lloyd Garrison
"I am aware that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not cause for severity? I will be as harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice. On this subject, I do not wish to think, or to speak, or write, with moderation. No! no! Tell a man whose house is on fire to give a moderate alarm; tell him to moderately rescue his wife from the hands of the ravisher; tell the mother to gradually extricate her babe from the fire into which it has fallen; -- but urge me not to use moderation in a cause like the present. I am in earnest -- I will not equivocate -- I will not excuse -- I will not retreat a single inch -- AND I WILL BE HEARD."
So wrote Garrison in the inaugural issue of The Liberator. Clearly, this was a man who was not afraid to speak his mind, even in criticizing his fellow abolitionists when he felt they compromised the cause: "The public shall not be imposed upon and men and things shall be called by their true names. I retract nothing. I blot out nothing. My language is exactly such as suits me. It will displease many I know. To displease them is my intention."
And he was subject to some harsh criticism by them in turn. In a piece entitled "How to Make a Pope", for example, William Goodell wrote of him, "Take an ardent and strong-minded leader in a good but hated cause, place him in the fires of persecution, and surround him with devoted and generous friends. Just in proportion to the frequency of his proving himself in the right, when almost everybody said he was wrong, will the conviction fasten upon his admirers that he is infallible. Almost of necessity, the same idea will insinuate itself imperceptibly yet firmly into his bosom. He soon shows that he expects to be implicitly followed, and his expectations realized."
At the same time, however, he recognized the necessity of working with such people to achieve common goals. In telling the story of The Liberator, McElroy tells the story of Garrison the man and of the abolitionist movement.
    ---
"There will never be a really free and enlightened State until the State comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and authority are derived, and treats him accordingly."
So concluded Henry David Thoreau in his seminal essay, "Civil Disobedience".

    Title: Property
    Author: Raymond Frey
    Narrator: Cliff Robertson, Robert Guillaume
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 3 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-26-06
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
The English philosopher John Locke offered a theory of property against which all others have since been measured. Locke said that personal property is a natural right, given by God. One line of his argument emphasizes the human need for self-preservation; here property rights are seen as a necessary instrument for peacefully distributing nature's bounty. Second (and more famously), Locke defends the earliest formation of property in a series of four steps: (1) every person owns his or her self and capacity to work (i.e. his or her labor); (2) by mixing what one owns (labor) with nature's common property, we make other things our own; (3) the consent of others is irrelevant to this process of securing property; and (4) "as much and as good" of nature's bounty must be left for others.
David Hume criticized Locke, insisting that property is not a natural right but rather a social convention that reflects self-interest and the desire to protect what we own. Jeremy Bentham insisted that only government (rather than society in general) can bestow property rights. Property ultimately involves personal control and security, as often opposed to other individual interests and to the overall interest or advantage of society. This tension is seen in issues like slavery, abortion, euthanasia, organ donation, government regulation, taxation, the power of eminent domain, welfare, and a variety of coercive social programs.
    Members Reviews:
    Not encyclopedic, but thought-provoking
The written description describes it well. The focus is mostly on basic theories and bundles of property rights, as they coalesced coming into the formation of the USA. It thus still has much pertinence. It is a sort of philosophical piece, not an exposition of recent creative nuts and bolts of property financing and so on. It asks such questions as, how all-powerful and exclusive should an owner's rights be? What is inherently owed, or not, to the society in which the property is held, and to various non-owner members of that society? What can be deemed mine, "owned," thus potentially traded or sold, extending to such things as my own body parts, etc.? When and where, and for what reasons, should the government have the ability to limit such transactions? There is a lot here, for a budget-priced book and 3 hours' length.
    Property Past
This piece gives a fair overview of Western European and American ideas of ownership. I was hoping for a more historically comprehnsive and worldwide compilation of views and especially ideas for ownership concepts and legal adaptations for the future.
Patriarchal concepts and laws that consider women, land and natural resources children as property in most of the world were unchallenged/unquestioned in this piece. "Property" describes without questioning the ethical basis and ramifications of Western ideas/laws regarding ownership. So three stars for description and one star for enquiry. No stars at all for failing to examine more concepts.
There is an incompletedness about the piece as it is. perhaps a companion piece with a broader information base would allow the listener/reader to begin to create new innovations that would make this world a better place for all those affected by ideas and laws regarding the concept of "property."

    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
    How can this be done?
By facing the truth that war is satisfying, and then substituting new satisfactions so that violence is no longer appealing. "War has become a habit. We reach for it the way a chain smoker reaches for a cigarette, promising to quit but somehow never kicking the habit." But Chopra tells us that peace has its own power, and our task now is to direct that power and multiply it one person at a time.
Behind the numbing headlines of violence running out of control, there are unmistakable signs of a change; Chopra believes that a majority of people are ready to see an end to war. "Right now 23 million soldiers serve in armies around the world. Can't we find 10 times that number who will dedicate themselves to peace? A hundred times?"
Peace Is the Way challenges each of us to take the next leap in personal evolution. "You aren't asked to be a saint, or to give up any belief. You are only asked to stop reacting out of fear, to change your allegiance from violence to peace." In a practical seven-step program, Chopra shows the reader how to become a true peacemaker. "Violence may be innate in human nature, but so is its opposite: love. The next stage of humanity, the leap which we are poised to take, will be guided by the force of that love." This is more than a hope or an aspiration. It is a new way of being in the world, giving each individual the power to end war in our time.
    Critic Reviews:
"Chopra's affirmation that 'our true identity is at the level of spirit and nowhere else' has the ring of truth and so does the rest of this simple, practical, inspiring book." (Publishers Weekly)

    Four Stars
It's a really good book. No one can do the work for you. It's an inside job.
This is one of the most powerful books to me ...
This is one of the most powerful books to me about the challenges of our present world affairs and more Importantly, it offers realistic, doable suggestions that any of us could do on a day to day basis to contribute to peace in ourseves, those around us and hopefully reaching out and connecting with others who hunger for true peace
    A very good read!
I recommend this book for anyone and everyone you know, yourself included, that might be struggling with a judgmental attitude towards any other religion or even a particular person in general.
Deepak does an excellent job at getting you to see outside the box in this thing called life. It isnt always easy but it CAN be done.
    A Beacon For Peace
It was Dr. Chopra who said, "The Seth books present an alternate map of reality with a new diagram of the psyche ... useful to all explorers of consciousness." Chopra's is a sane, calm voice amidst the fear-driven rhetoric of our times. Comparing the birth of a new world to the growth of cells in a fetus until it is ready to be born, he says, "The real answer to why we don't see a new world yet is that it isn't ready to be born.

  • Entangled Empathy Audiobook by Lori Gruen

    Title: Entangled Empathy
Subtitle: An Alternative Ethic for Our Relationships with Animals
    Author: Lori Gruen
    Narrator: Lee Ahonen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-10-17
    Publisher: Lantern Books
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
In Entangled Empathy, scholar and activist Lori Gruen argues that rather than focusing on animal "rights", we ought to work to make our relationships with animals right by empathetically responding to their needs, interests, desires, vulnerabilities, hopes, and unique perspectives. Pointing out that we are already entangled in complex and life-altering relationships with other animals, Gruen guides listeners through a new way of thinking about - and practicing - animal ethics.
Gruen describes entangled empathy as a type of caring perception focused on attending to another's experience of wellbeing. It is an experiential process involving a blend of emotion and cognition in which we recognize we are in relationships with others and are called upon to be responsive and responsible in these relationships by attending to another. When we engage in entangled empathy we are transformed and in that transformation we can imagine less violent, more meaningful ways of being together.
    Members Reviews:
Context and relationship are central in our interactions with different nonhuman animals
Another excellent book by Dr. Gruen. As someone working for and with animals in a variety of settings, doing a lot of staff training, and very interested in the human-animal interaction and relationships I was immediately drawn to this book. The book discusses a different approach, where context and relationship are central in our interactions with different nonhuman animals, and how we might make ethical decisions concerning other beings.
It is an excellent read and offers a lot to think about, I am sure that I will read this book many more times. The book highlights the fact that our understanding, knowledge, actions, interactions and feelings are work in progress, and this is an important message. Keeping in mind we have to practise, to remind oneself that there is still so much to learn, understand, to feel, which seem obvious but it harder to achieve then we probably admit to.
As Dr. Gruen points out, "Entangled empathy is not something we can engage in without critical attention, practice, and correction. I think it is wise to add a good dose of humility to the process of empathizing and the actions that spring from it. In other words, entangled empathy requites work; in that work, however, lie great rewards."
I also enjoyed the personal stories and practical examples.
It is a very important book I hope everyone will read it, and also, practice!
    Celebrating Our Entangled Lives
An insightful view of how humans and other species share various levels of empathetic understanding and caring for each other. I found this very helpful in the final preparation stages of my wolf book: LUPEY JOURNALS - LESSONS FROM THE HEART OF A WOLF (see lupeywolf.com). The reason for bringing that into the discussion here is that Lori Gruen's insights and ability to share them illustrates the empathy and thus trust that can operate between us and our animal cousins. This is a lovely read with an important message.
Entangled Empathy Provokes Thought & Feeling
Very interesting book on empathy and human-animal interaction; remarkably lucid and readable. I found it very useful for my practice of haptic drawing and painting [...]. I only wish that Gruen's book had been longer, and that she had gone more deeply into the subject.

    Publisher's Summary:
