"Looking for God Within the Kingdom of Religious Confusion" is engaging and informative. It is as if I am there with Jacob. Arthur Schade's portrayal of Jacob - his confusion, his anguish, his hope in some instances, his doubts in other instances, the warmth and hatred he experiences in various religious circles including almost being physical attacked - is brilliant. Alternatively i could be watching a movie. The author is honest and courageous in tackling some controversial issues, such as why there are different recordings and interpretation of the word of God, who's side God is on, why people maim each other in the name of God. The book raises awareness about vital socio-political issues. It never occurred to me before that soldiers and/or ex-soliders get traumatised, which has grave implications for their families and for society. The book also makes one conscious of the ugly side of young men being called to serve their country in the army - that actually teenagers are being trained to be comfortable with killing, and with causing misery and destruction; and so youth and innocence is taken away from these teenagers. The author shows us that we all reason intuitively about the existence and non-existence of God; therefore we should not judge each other about our differing beliefs, as long as we all strive to do each other no harm. I am looking forward to more of Arthur Schade's writing.
"Is God here? Or is He there!"
If anyone has ever been confused in their search for God, this book not only helps you realize you are not alone in this journey, but will put a backpack on you and set you off on a quest with Jacob Hinsen, after he loses his daughter, Jessica, to a violent car accident.
Jacob's travels takes to the road, where three of the world's major religions will be questioned and grilled, as the grieving father tasks the knowledge and beliefs of the leaders in hopes of finding, "How could God let my child die?".
As each guide on the road gives their view of "God" and who "He" is, Jacob tries to piece together the "who, what, why, where and how" of why a so-called loving God could let his young daughter die. The reader is put in the back seat as Jacob maneuvers his way through Christianity, Islam and Judaism-- Who has the answer? Jacob has his notebook and notes ready, as he questions the different religions, which sometimes holds tens, and often hundreds, of off-shoots with different beliefs and ideologies.
The reader is taken on a journey, and often wishes he or she could lend a hand and ask questions of the religious leaders themselves, just to help Jacob out. But, Jacob is ahead of the game and asks all guides the right questions; but does Jacob get the answer he is looking for?
This is a must read for anyone who has ever questioned God during a time of distress or grief. This book is also a primer for anyone who has not stepped out of their own religious beliefs and learned of the sincere understanding of other's spiritual walks in Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
