    Title: Obsidian
    Subtitle: Lux, Book 1
    Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
    Narrator: Justine Eyre
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-18-13
    Publisher: Tantor Audio

    Genres: Teens, Ages 11-13
    Publisher's Summary:
When 17-year-old Katy Swartz moved to West Virginia right before her senior year, she'd pretty much resigned herself to thick accents, dodgy Internet access, and a whole lot of boring, but then she spotted her hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up...until he opened his mouth.
Daemon Black is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. It's hate at first sight, but when a stranger attacks her and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot guy next door? Well, he's an alien.
Turns out that Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities and Katy is caught in the crosshairs. Daemon's touch has lit her up like the Vegas Strip and the only way she's getting out of this alive is by sticking close to him until her alien mojo fades. That is, if she doesn't kill him first.

"The beginning of Armentrout's new Lux series is a thrilling ride from start to finish. A cross between
    Roswell and
Dawson's Creek, this series is guaranteed to hold your attention and have you begging for more." (

    Great Story! Didn't like narrator.
What made the experience of listening to Obsidian the most enjoyable?
The story. I loved the story that Jennifer L Armentrout wrote.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She had a very nasally voice. In this story, it is difficult to enjoy, especially when she performs a male voice. She also pronounces the male lead character's name wrong. The author has said the name is pronounced Day-mon not Demon. It should really be rectified.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I love Katy and Daemon's first kiss.
    Any additional comments?
Narrators should check name pronunciation before they start the story because now you have six books with an incredibly annoying mispronunciation where if they would have emailed the author, it could have been corrected immediately.
    Great story annoying voice.
This story was good, but I didn't care for the feminine girl talking for the guy - it was awful.
Enjoyed the story but not the narrator.
If you could sum up Obsidian in three words, what would they be?
    Aliens are hot!
What did you like best about this story?
    Daemon Black
What didnt you like about Justine Eyres performance?
I've listened to easily over a hundred audiobooks, so I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to narrators. I've only had a few who completely turned me off to the audio version of a book; Justine Eyre happens to be one of them. I've listened to many books that Justine Eyre has narrated and every time debated whether I should suffer through her voice or just eventually read the book later sometime in my spare time. I haven't been able to finish at least three of the audiobooks that she has narrated. All of the female main characters sound nasally, whinny and I guess the best word to explain it is...constipated. I sincerely wish that the publisher would update the audiobooks with a new narrator for this series, because I will more than likely not be continuing this series in audio format.
    Narrator was terrible!
The narrator ruined this book for me! I might buy it in print to see how it ends.

    my favorite audio book
Weetzie Bat is a wondrous love letter to art, life and Los Angeles. Ms. Bresnehan handles the material and characters all with such conviction and care that even when sitting down to listen to only a chapter or two one feels compelled to listen to the entirety of her performance.
    Not what I expected.
The fantastical/mystical story line made it very hard for me to enjoy this book. The characters didn't feel developed to me as they had a limited range of emotions from saddness to absolute- fantasy like love. No anger, callousness, or other ugly emotions that make for complex characters.
    Didn't age well?
First, I was unimpressed with the quality of the audio. It sounded like it had been transferred from tape, with pops and hisses. Next, I wonder if I would've enjoyed this story more had I read it in the 80s, when AIDS was still barely spoken of and what seems daring in your 20s just seems flakey in my late 40s. A sweet ending, but underwritten and precious.

    Really cute!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. I learned a lot about the Kosovo war from the point of view of a kosovar girl which was exactly what I wanted. The story was catching and moving and hit on points you would never see in the news.
What other book might you compare Girl of Kosovo to and why?
    Anne Frank.
What does Julie Dretzin bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The narrator captured the story very well and kept my interest. I listen while I do data entry at work and I didn't doze off into la la land once.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It was very enlightening. I didn't know much about the war or the country of Kosovo and I feel I have a better understanding. Some parts were very sad but it had a positive outcome.
    Any additional comments?
My boyfriend is part Kosovar and was the same age as the little girl during the war. This book really made a difference in understanding him better and I am grateful that I could learn more about something that is hard for him to talk about. I checked a lot of the story with him and it seems to be a good account of how it really was over there. I recommend to anyone who has a thirst to learn about other cultures. It's a great historical fiction in general.

The Best In the Series So Far
This story was exciting. Perhaps it was the time in history that was more interesting. It followed the Underground Railroad, and Harriet Tubman was in the story line. I loved the singing. It was short, but very appropriate. The narrator did a great job on this one.
a very good and innocent book
loved it kept me comfortable on a cold nite now I have to unchakle my cat.
Not the strongest in the series
first two books had a better story, but the performance is in par. nonetheless was still a fun read.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Two years ago bulldozers had come to make a cut at the top of Sarahs Mountain. They began uprooting trees and pushing subsoil in a huge pile to get at the coal. As the pile grew enormous, so had M.C.s fear of it. He had nightmares in which the heap came tumbling down. Over and over again, it buried his family on the side of the mountain." (from M.C. Higgins, the Great)
When M.C. Higgins climbed the 40-foot steel pole near his house, he could see over the spiky treetops and far across the rolling emerald hills. There, on Sarahs Mountain, with his face turned toward the sun and his arms spread wide, M.C. welcomed in the morning of a brand new day. How he would have liked to stay there forever! But M.C. knew - better than his family - that strip mining had reduced the outcropping upon which their cabin was built to rubble, and soon the spoilage would come raining down, burying their home forever. When two strangers come to the mountain, M.C. thinks hes found a solution to his problem, only to discover that the real answer, like the playful voices inside his head, lies in himself.

He says it is a great book. He is in 6th grade
My son got this book a few days ago and is almost done with it. He says it is a great book. He is in 6th grade, I was told this was an 8th grade level but he says it is way to easy of a read but still a very good book!
It Has A Few Plots, They're Just Very, Very Slow
From what I can tell, M.C. Higgins the Great has three main plots. The central one being the possibility of M.C.'s mother being discovered and marketed as the newest superstar singer. There are two other subplots as well, a strong one and a weak one.
The strong subplot makes the reader aware of an avalanche of spoil possibly falling on M.C.'s house due to poor mining practices in the area. It could actually be tied in with the central plot about the singing, but I have an easier time just separating these events into different categories. The weak subplot is your classic coming of age story, where M.C. has his first (I guess it's his first) major crush on a girl. This subplot is not really needed except to make M.C. more angry during the last chapter of the book.
Now why it takes 275 LONG pages to cover the three plots, I don't really know. There are definitely some interesting parts of the book, but these good parts are seperated by so much of what I see as trivial padding. I didn't really see a need for the scene where M.C. and his mom go swimming at all, and there are so many other smaller scenes in the book that really aren't worth mentioning.
I think the book is okay; I just wish it were much shorter.
Interesting story. A gift to my grandson. I ...
Interesting story. A gift to my grandson. I read it first.
    Great service and prompt delievery
Was very pleased with speed of shipment and quality of the book I ordered! Would order from this vendor again. Thanks :)
Listening for the Voices of the Mountains
Although the story is set presumably in the mid 1970âs, it has a distinctly backwoodsy1930âs feel to it. This very intense tale (covering about three days of action and mental anxiety) features two conflicting Black families who coexist in an uneasy truce of suspicionâwho practice two diverse methods of family survival.

    Publisher's Summary:
What if you could actually see angels and fallen angels engaging in battle? Would you have the courage to join the fight? A year ago, Jonah Stone and his sister, Eliza, discovered that their mother is a nephilim, the child of a union between a human and a fallen angel, which makes them and their little brother, Jeremiah, quarterlings, or one-quarter angel. When Jonah and Eliza are attacked by fallen angels at school, they learn that quarterlings are being targeted all over the world. The kids undergo special training to help them discover their own unique angelic gifts and rescue a kidnapped prophet - one who holds the key to a battle between good and evil.
This fast-paced fantasy adventure based in Scripture brings spiritual warfare to life. The series is the first Christian answer to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, The Secret Series, and other middle-grade series packed with adventure, action, and the supernatural. But the message is solidly scriptural in that the most powerful weapon of all is prayer.

    Really enjoying this series
Great Addition to a Rapid Paced Series
I totally enjoyed the first book in the series and jumped into this one immediately from the first. Now, I can't wait to pick up the third. In this book, the characters grow in strength and character. They learn how to work with the other quarterlings. This is the perfect series to hook your children on with the battle of good and evil and the references to the Bible. It might just make them want to study the Bible a little to learn about those references. I would recommend this book to any child, though you might have to read it to one under nine. I also recommend it to anyone else who loves a supernatural fight of good vs. evil.
    Great Book!
We read this book as a family with my 11 yr old. We really liked it a lot. Great adventure story with a strong, positive spiritual element.

    Perfect
What made the experience of listening to Pushing the Limits the most enjoyable?
It felt less like an audiobook and more like sitting across the table from my friends as they told me about their day.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked that both characters were flawed, that even though they started out with nefarious intent, and went about gaining their own ends in the wrong way, they ended up accepting that their nemesis wasn't their enemy and working through their issues on their own.
What does MacLeod Andrews and Tara Sands bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Tara does an absolutely brilliant job with Echo's sarcasm, and MacLeod's reading of one scene in particular made me have to pull off into a parking lot because I was crying too hard to see the road in front of me.
    Any additional comments?
Highly recommend both the book and the audio version.
    The narrator was awesome!
It's rarely that I listen to a book and feel like I am so much better off than if I would've just read it. In this case, the narrator of Pushing the Limits took it from an entertaining YA read to a quite emotional experience. There were parts when I actually cried, and it was all due to the narrator's touching delivery. The story was good. It's not light and fluffy, but it's definitely worth reading.
    The Tough Stuff.
Pushing The Limits is a surprisingly beautiful tale of two teenagers who are dealt a bad hand.

    Lesson Learned
My son had to read this book for school, this would be his first grade of the school year. He was struggling keeping interested in the book, so I read the book myself. I think the book was really good. Nadira of course became my favorite character. Her strength, love and respect for her family...... Wonderful.
    Excellent Read
This is a story that will get everyone thinking and analyzing American culture and beliefs. This Muslim family feels they need to seek asylum in Canada because they are in the U.S. illegally. Like many, they entered the country legally and just stayed beyond the expiration of their visas. This story of how many people live in this country is both sad and hopeful throughout. It is certainly a read I recommend to all middle and high school age students.
    Five Stars
Easy to read, interesting. I recommend!
    Decent, but lacks alot....
First let me say I loved the premise of this book, and was excited about it once I read the synopsis on the back. However, I was sorely disappointed. The book lacks consistent character development, the plot is predictable and it does not come close to addressing the larger social issues that it could, given the subject matter. I found myself decidedly unsympathetic towards the protagonist and disinterested in the resolution/outcome by the middle of the book, which is never a good sign. Perhaps I had too many expectations going into reading the book.
I gave it a three star rating, because it wasn't completely awful. The writing is fine, and it is a quick read. I could see lower-level Young Adult readers enjoying it and will keep the copy I have for my classroom library.
Book allows children to tackle tough current issues
This book is amazing and tells the story of a family from Bangladesh who gets a tourist visa to America and ends up staying- illegally. However after 9/11 our country started caring about who lived in our country and made men from certain countries register with the government.
This book has allowed me to think about things from another's point of view and re-think my opinion on illegal immigration (which I am still thinking about). I think it's great that Marina Budhos writes a novel like this to allow young adults to think critically about this hot topic and form their own opinions on it. Amazing class discussions could come of this book if used in a classroom setting!!!
