Title: Thailand: The Ten Cardinal Sins
    Author: The Blether
    Narrator: Jackson Ladd
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-27-14
    Publisher: Kemah Bay Marketing
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Every single day there are Western men arriving in Thailand for the first time, and contrary to popular opinion, they are not all sex tourists. Many arrive here determined to not get entwined with the local ladies. Alas, far too many not only get entwined, they get trapped, cocooned, and sucked dry by the professional black widow spiders that frequent the red light areas.
This, though, is not a book about hookers in Thailand. There's enough of them out there already. What the book does cover is a couple of the more stunningly ridiculous situations that men can find themselves in when dealing with bar girls, but it's much more than that.
The first chapter is "The Rule Of Man". We Westerners have an expectation of the police and the court system that you will not find in Thailand. It's a shock to the system, and applies to everyone that visits Thailand, male and female alike. Some of the advice may look like common sense to you, but you would be amazed at the number of people who lack it. Even more to the point, the number who leave their brains at the airport. Normally sensible people do ludicrous things, and they take risks they would never take back home.
The information in this book could literally save your life, if not just your life savings. If you are thinking of holidaying in Thailand, or possibly even relocating to the Kingdom, this is essential listening. Thailand: The Ten Cardinal Sins is a how-to guide to avoiding the most dangerous, stupid, and costly mistakes.

    Essential reading.
This is mostly for you if you are (or planning to) have relationship with thai girl, but also gives background of basic cultural differences and doing business or buying property in Thailand. If you have read only "regular" guide books about Thailand, this is definitely essential to read.
    A top Read
I was surprised that the book was such a good read.
    not bad
Some good lessons here about general behavior while in Thailand. I can attest to all of them. Listen and learn.
    Handy
Some useful information here. Would like to see all these books in one ultimate guide to Thailand.

Title: Sticky Buns Across America: Back-Roads Biking from Sea to Shining Sea
    Author: Léo Woodland
    Narrator: Nathan William Heller
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-24-14
    Publisher: McGann Publishing, LLC
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Sticky Buns Across America is the story of one of the four continents and one of the countries Woodland has crossed by bike, this time with patient wife Steph: a tale of riding across small-town America (and occasional bits of Canada, although to Americans that doesn't count).
It's not a tale of heroic battling with storms, riots, poison ivy, Americans, and other problems. Instead, sit back and enjoy an eccentric account of encounters made and experiences lived. Plus, it has to be admitted, a lot of sticky buns eaten.
About the author: Leo Woodland is a tall and balding man who has long annoyed many by not sitting still. Or, indeed, pleased even more by not staying in one place for too long.
So far the tally by bike is 28 countries on four continents.
Mr. Woodland has been writing about cycling since 1965, when he wrote his first reports for the British publication Cycling. Since then he has been a prolific contributor to newspapers, magazines, and radio stations in the U.K, the U.S., and Belgium. Many of his fans know him better as Les Woodland. Sticky Buns Across America is Mr. Woodland's 26th book.

America from a European bicyclist's perspective
What did you like best about Sticky Buns Across America: Back-Roads Biking from Sea to Shining Sea? What did you like least?
I found the author's observations about America to be mostly fair, if not always complimentary. The story was at its best when he was describing individuals met along the road.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The story was at its weakest as the author tried to describe the collective culture he encountered, an activity which he spent way too much time at. His girlfriend accompanied him, but barely merited a footnote. More human interaction, especially a recurring character like his only companion, would have made the story more interesting. Occasionally his line of thought jumped around so it was not clear that the discussion was blending stories from a previous trip into the current one.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator spoke with an irregular pace that was hard to understand. After a few hours of listening, it became easier to follow, but really, is there any reason why the narrator needed to sound like Igor from an old Frankenstein movie?
Was Sticky Buns Across America: Back-Roads Biking from Sea to Shining Sea worth the listening time?
Probably more interesting to a European visiting the U.S. for the first time, than to an American.

    Publisher's Summary:
Who doesn't like to travel? Traveling the world opens new vistas and experiences to all who undertake it. But when roaming abroad, to make the trip more pleasurable and successful, an in-depth knowledge of backpacking allows trekkers to avert mishaps and problems. In this information-packed audiobook, Have Backpack Will Travel, the author provides detailed information in numerous critical areas related to seeing the world as a backpacker. This book is intended for the thousands of (usually) young adults who venture out each year to see the world using their backpacks as suitcases. The book is NOT for those who are interested in hiking trails and looking for tips on camping and hiking those trails. The author draws from many trips abroad, covering the many fine points and concerns that need to be addressed before and during a trip. From obtaining a passport, knowing which shots are required, how and what to pack, to finding your way around, this audiobook embraces particulars any traveler must know.
Further areas include the pros and cons of driving, obtaining traveler's insurance, safety precautions as well as a section on general tips and helpful hints. Using a backpack as a suitcase sets a person apart immediately from those who choose to go the hotel and tour group route. Oftentimes, backpackers are more independent, usually more adventurous and definitely more concerned about watching every dollar spent. Therefore, budgeting and ways to keep spending to a minimum are a constant theme. Whether you are a first time traveler or one who has been abroad on numerous occasions, the information provided can be helpful to you.

Ok, but the information is dated
The author has had some great adventures. This book seems to predate smart phones, so his information is a bit dated.
    Very Good Book
It is a very good book. It contains a lot of information which will help anyone who wants to travel the world with only the backpack. Their is only on drawback to listening to the book. It has appendices which are not accessible without a copy. Good idea if you want to listen is to purchase the book as well
Not a book for trail hikers
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
This book is ok for vacation backpackers but of little use for trail hikers
Has Have Backpack Will Travel turned you off from other books in this genre?
I like tails of backpacking trails and was hoping to learn something from this book but it did nothing for me
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He was ok just the information was not great
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Have Backpack Will Travel?

  • The Search for the Codex Cardona Audiobook by Arnold L. Bauer

Title: The Search for the Codex Cardona
    Author: Arnold L. Bauer
    Narrator: Robert Blumenfeld
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-11-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
In The Search for the Codex Cardona, Arnold J. Bauer tells the story of his experiences on the trail of a cultural treasure, a Mexican painted book that first came into public view at Sothebys auction house in London in 1982, nearly 400 years after it was presumably made by Mexican artists and scribes. On folios of amate paper, the Codex includes two oversized maps and 300 painted illustrations accompanied by text in 16-century paleography. The Codex relates the trajectory of the Nahua people to the founding of the capital of Tenochtitln and then focuses on the consequences of the Spanish conquest up to the 1550s. If authentic, the Codex Cardona is an invaluable record of early Mexico. Yet there is no clear evidence of its origin, what happened to it after 1560, or even where it is today, after its last known appearance at Christies auction house in New York in 1998.
Bauer first saw the Codex Cardona in 1985 in the Crocker Nuclear Laboratory at the University of California, Davis, where scholars from Stanford and the University of California were attempting to establish its authenticity. Allowed to gently lift a few pages of this ancient treasure, Bauer was hooked. By 1986, the Codex had again disappeared from public view. Bauers curiosity about the Codex and its whereabouts led him down many forking paths - from California to Seville and Mexico City, to the Firestone Library in Princeton, to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and Christies in New York - and it brought him in contact with an international cast of curators, agents, charlatans, and erudite book dealers. The Search for the Codex Cardona is a mystery that touches on issues of cultural patrimony, the workings of the rare books and manuscripts trade, the uncertainty of archives and evidence, and the ephemerality of the past and its remains.
    Members Reviews:
I wish it were everything it hoped to be.
A great idea for a book, a good deal of scholarship, but thin on facts. What's worse is that when he runs out of facts he starts constructing an imagined story of the way the codex came to its current location and owner. While he explicitly states that he is imagining these details, it makes the actual history seem less important and more hollow. About half way through it seems there simply isn't enough for a book.
A Real-Life Indiana Jones Meets The Da Vinci Code
A real-life Indiana Jones story, "The Search for the Codex Cardona" is a global mystery with tantalizing clues, disconnected numbers, dead ends the works.
The Codex Cardona, if found, would be an invaluable painted book of early Mexico. Lost for four hundred years, it resurfaced at a Sothebys auction. The author got a brief look at it and even got to hold some of the pages before it went underground again. The search was on!
A breathtaking tale that satisfied both my scholarly interest and taste for adventure.

    Title: Downhill All the Way
    Author: Edward Enfield
    Narrator: Bill Wallis
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-11-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Fed up with questions about what he was going to do when he retired, Edward decided to get on his bicycle and ride from Le Havre to the Mediterranean. He struggled in Normandy to get directions from old men tipsy on Calvados by 9 am, passed by prairies of corn and acres of sunflowers, and hit his stride on the towpath of the Burgundy canal. He explored the mystery of what an ouvrier eats for lunch, and was barred from a swimming pool because his trunks were too decent.
Through the Rhone and down to Provence and the Camargue, Enfield is witty and informative as always.
    Members Reviews:
    Super.
Loved it, witty , atmospheric, nostalgic. I particularly loved the narration which was faithful to the author's speaking style.
    Getting old
Enfield is an excellent writer. You may well have come across his short pieces in the Oldie. Not all good article writers transfer well to the longer form but Enfield does. Touring France by bicycle is an excellent subject for him. So why do I have some reservations?
Firstly, this took place a few years ago. When the franc was the currency and the Internet didn't exist. At one point he talks about wanting to carry a large Encyclopaedia with him. Well now you can :-) Not old enough to be nostalgic, just out of date.
Secondly, nothing much seems to have happened to him. There is a lot of padding in the book. He doesn't even finish his journey.
However, this is a very pleasant book and good for a long journey in the car.
    Tiresome
Would you try another book written by Edward Enfield or narrated by Bill Wallis?
Bill Wallis tones are extremely soothing, I could literally fall asleep listening to his storing telling. I am not sure if its the story or the delivery but I am struggling to finish this book.
Would you recommend Downhill All the Way to your friends? Why or why not?
The story so far to Chapter 4 has been slightly entertaining but I'm finding it very slow, maybe this matches with the progress of the cyclist. The names of the various places visited are lost on me. I will continue to push on in hope of a improvement.

    Publisher's Summary:
With a glint in his eye, Rob turns and asks me if I want to touch his furry puma. I begin to feel a little concerned about the days and weeks ahead; we are only hours into the trip and things have already taken a sinister turn. Thankfully it turns out he is referring to the little embossed logo on his new shirt.
Fuelled by a degree of mid-life crisis and the need to escape, albeit temporarily, the dull routine of modern life, David and Rob set out to walk from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, taking in French villages, beautiful scenery, and one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in Europe. Just about perfect if you can put aside the inevitable conflict, drama, and unexpected tedium that results from two men spending over seven solid weeks in each others company!
    Critic Reviews:
"This is a laugh out loud romp their journey is highly entertaining and enjoy the madcap adventures that eight weeks on the road with two blokes can bring!!" (Julie Knowles Waterstones' Bookseller)
    Members Reviews:
    Recommended with limited enthusiasm
I have to agree with a reviewer who said he found the author's regular "We're not a 'couple'!" protestations a bit off-putting; moreover, the audio narration came of as a bit effete to me, which didn't help in that regard.
As a travel narrative, it was okay, although there was a fair amount of emphasis on the other hikers they met as part of the story; that aspect didn't fully work for me. There's much juvenile humor, unfortunately made worse by the narration as well. I suspect the print version might be a full three stars, with 2.5 for the audio edition. I will say the writing itself is fairly good in terms of flow, so it's not a matter of needing "editing" as such.
    A good hiking tale
I know I'm a sucker for hiking tales. I'm a hiker, and I read most things on the topic I can get my hands on. Within that body of hiking literature, I'd say this one is fairly interesting and motivating. It does make me want to hike the GR10; after I finished the book I went right out and bought the trail guide. You should not, however, expect this to be Bill Bryson hikes the Pyrenees. That's not the author's intent. Instead he takes you on his 50-day trek, full of gorgeous scenery, interesting characters, the usual hiking snafus and problems, and some physical misery. I enjoyed it and will probably listen again, this time with guide book in hand.
The reader did an excellent job. And, thank heavens, his pronunciation of the names of French towns was accurate---otherwise the listening experience would have been difficult.
My only caveat is that the author seems concerned you'll think he and his hiking partner may be lovers rather than just friends, so he makes any number of jokey references to the fact that they are not. These jokes become annoying fairly quickly. Aside from this bit of "homophobia light," I enjoyed the book immensely.
    The Hairy Hikers
A most intertaining book that takes the reader on a walking journey day by day along the edge of the Pyrenees.

    Not worth the money
Dull, boring and needlessly vulgar. I was really looking forward to something clever and entertaining - but I very disappointed.
