Joe starts this dispatch with a lesson about what it means to wait. For four days, Joe waited out bad weather in the Khumbu Icefall. There was an avalanche in the icefield, and there was just no way around it. So, Joe and his guide, JJ, played cards and listened to music (Mark Knofler and Robert Cray). Joe was very anxious to keep moving. Finally, when they got a good weather window, they scrambled from base camp (17,500ft) to camp one (19,500ft). And then, when Joe didn't think he could go any farther, his guide said they needed to keep going to camp two (22,700ft). Joe says he's tired and in pain, but proud. It's a lesson in patience and perseverance. Now, they are at camp two and Joe says he is ready to reach the summit. Stay tuned.

She'll go back to Kathmandu and then catch a plane back to the United States. Joe wanted to go with Liz, but she encouraged him to stay and pursue this dream that they have been training for and dreaming about for so long. For the school children who are listening, Joe wants you to write about the tough decisions they had to make: If you were Liz, would you have left the mountain to be with your family? Would you have asked Joe to go with you? If you were Joe, would you stay on the mountain? Joe says he'll be sending more upbeat dispatches in the coming days, but today he's sad and thinking about how hard some good decisions are to make.

One of the traditions of climbing Everest is the puja blessings at base camp. This is a Buddhist ceremony to ask the gods for protection and permission to climb. Sherpas will not climb the mountain without this blessing. Liz, Joe, and their sherpas had their puja blessing today, complete with the traditional incense, chang (a rice beer), and sampa (roasted barley). They and all of their hiking implements, as well as the many gifts they are taking to the summit, received the blessing. Additionally, Joe says they are really feeling the effects of high altitude now. They are having trouble sleeping and even simple tasks are getting more difficult. At base camp, they are right below the extremely dangerous Khumbu Icefall. They can hear the ice seracs shifting, and the sound is tremendous. Joe says you should check out "O Fortuna" at the beginning of Carl Orff's opera Carmina Burana.

  • Kingdoms in the Air Audiobook by Bob Shacochis

    Title: Kingdoms in the Air
Subtitle: Dispatches from the Far Away
    Author: Bob Shacochis
    Narrator: P. J. Ochlan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-15-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Best known for his sweeping international and political fiction narratives - including The Woman Who Lost Her Soul, which won the Dayton Peace Prize and was finalist for the Pulitzer Prize - Bob Shacochis began his writing career as a pioneering journalist and contributing editor for Outside Magazine and Harper's. Kingdoms in the Air brings together the very best of Shacochis's culture and travel essays in one livewire collection that spans his global adventures and his life passions; from surfing, to his obsession with the South American dorado, to the time he went bushwhacking in Mozambique.
In the titular essay "Kingdoms", the longest work in the collection, Shacochis ventures to Nepal with his friend, the photographer Thomas Laird, who was the first foreigner to live in Nepal's kingdom of Mustang as the forbidden Shangri-la prepared to open its borders to trekkers and trade. When the two men return a decade after Laird first lived there, Shacochis observes in brilliantly evocative prose both the current cultural and political landscape of the country and the changes that his friend has to reconcile with.
Replete with Shacochis's signature swagger, humor, and crystalline wisdom, Kingdoms in the Air is a majestic and essential collection from one of our most important writers.
    Critic Reviews:
"Shacochis has extended his knowledge and imagination into places most of us have never ventured." (Washington Post)

    Not up to Pico Iyer
I was hoping to read another Video Night in Khatmandu, but this was far less interesting. I found it to be glib and leaking is substance.
    Informative and Poetic
Shacochi's political analysis of developing nations is enlightening and complex at the same time. His ability to look into the contradictions and non sequiturs that abound at the crossroads of ancient culture and encroaching industrialization is acute; I came away fully convinced that I had visited and been immersed in these obscure and sometimes dangerous corners of the world. His descriptions of the island of Providence, as well as his musings on the American military-industrial complex at the end of this travelogue, were scintillating and some of the best prose I've ever read. And I'm an English Literature major! I don't have to board a jet and suffer through en route turbulence or breach dangerous war zones to travel the world--with this book, I can do that vicariously. And come away with a deeper more comprehensive knowledge of world politics at the same time!
grabs you right from the start
Kingdoms in the Air grabs you right from the start and pulls you along on the authors far off notable adventures. I fully connected with Bob's irreverent, in your face writing style. Looking forward to reading more!
Great... almost all the way through
The portion on Nepal was great, but some of the rest was a little preachy and self serving
    One Star
never could get my mind into these adventures

    Publisher's Summary:
Liz Pace has arrived safe and sound at home in New Jersey. Now, Joe is climbing with his guide, JJ (Jeff Justman). In this dispatch, Joe talks about a rough time he had climbing through the Khumbu Icefall. Here, the glaciers are as big as trucks, and the climb between base camp (17,500 ft) and camp one (19,200 ft) is treacherous. After one of their first trips to establish camp one, Joe realized he was short on water. He became very dehydrated and struggled to make it back to base camp. Throughout the difficult journey back, Joe was inspired by all of the school-children and friends and family back home. He knew things were looking up when Joe Cocker's version of "I Get By with A Little Help From My Friends" and "I Feel Alright" started going through his head.

    Publisher's Summary:
The stories in this book are all true. Its author has been held up at gunpoint at night on a road in Guatemala and shot with a machine gun in the chest and shoulder in Vietnam. He's come close to dying of thirst in the Sahara and freezing to death in the Himalayas. He's contracted malaria and typhoid fever in Ethiopia and hepatitis in India. There have been accidents involving motorcycles and automobiles. He's had close calls involving lions (twice), elephants (three times) and a rhino (once). He's visited over a hundred countries, seen revolutions, famines, wars, and panty raids, feasted in palaces and fasted in caves. He's discovered paradises, been saved by dolphins, hopped freight trains, danced with an 108-year-old woman, swam with sharks, frequented whore houses and opium dens, and met a man capable of revealing God.
In the pages of this book you'll meet the queen of the Ecuadorian prison system, the Dalai Lama, Dick Cheney, a swami from Katmandu who makes his living picking up large stones with his penis, yak herders, tunnel rats, 300 pound go-go girls, deep sea divers, drug dealers, stock car drivers, Indonesian princes, Bolivian miners, beanheads, powder monkeys, hookers and saints. Between the stories the author gives advice to would-be travelers, describes six tropical paradises where you can live comfortably on five hundred dollars a month, and includes his personal lists of the best things in the world. Mr. Linnemeier hails from the Hoosier state. Today he treads the path of moderation, living contentedly in a small town, surrounded by friends and family. He claims to have abandoned most of his previous vices, and has the stated aim of dying peacefully in bed at ninety five. In his own words, "I'm not the kind of person that men automatically defer to. I don't usually make women's hearts beat faster when they see me across a crowded room."

Average American's 100 places to see before you die
This is the competitive travel by numbers style of travel. For me travel is about the characters and interactions not how many cool destinations I can rack up. This is a materialistic list that predictably includes coffee in Paris with the Herald Tribune, Jim Morrisons grave, Spiritual excursions to India etc. If you are into a Lonely Planet style 100/1000 places things to do list this is the book for you
    Completely inspiring.. fascinating..
Told in his own voice, very naturally which just makes it soo easy to listen to.
Amazing! A must for anyone who loves to travel!
What made the experience of listening to How an Average Man Lived an Adventurous Life the most enjoyable?
The stories re-opened my love for adventure, reminded me of what is out there to discover and what we can all learn from seeing outside of the usual "box" that we live in.
What did you like best about this story?
The author's life experience is very colourful. You will not expect the range of tales you will come across in this book.
What about the narratorss performance did you like?
Very down to earth way of depicting the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I couldn't stop once I started listening!
    Any additional comments?
    Highly recommended!
