Fascinating and funny account of the author's life as a grad student in Russian lit

This book has everything-life imitating art, ice palaces, bad poetry and bad landladies in Uzbekistan, insane spouses of Russian novelists, and sardonic asides about Orhan Pamuk. Plus travelogues, literary theory and a justification of the life of literary study. I love everything this writer writes. Just read it.

and ceaselessly funny book about academia

A well written, bright, and ceaselessly funny book about academia, language, culture, and things about Uzbekistan you never knew you wanted to know.

Informative book

For students of Russian language, history, or literature, this book is a very interesting read. Some of the literature discussed was familiar to me, others were brand new to me. I was also interested in the discussion of the culture of Russia and of some of the countries which surround Russia. The book was recommended to me by my Russian teacher, and I would likewise recommend it to other students.

This is a great book. The writing style is so clear and funny. I hope the author will write more books.

If you are interested in Russian literature, get this book. If you are not that interested in the topic, still get this book. It is brilliant.

Fun Adventures

The three books Loreen Niewenhuis has written on her Great Lakes adventures are enjoyable, interesting and educational. I have learned more about my home state of Michigan through her adventures. It is always a better read when the author is intelligent, thoughtful, and has a sense of humor. Thank you Loreen Niwenhuis!

A nice read

it was good but there is a lot of history on the Manitou islands and I would have liked a little more of that instead of piping plovers . I guess its her book and it is what it is .I'm glad I read it but I would have liked to read about her hiking and camping on the more remote places of the islands and describe the terrain .But she did a good job with what she did do .The people were interesting

Excellent!

If you have enjoyed Lake Michigan from any perspective - swimming, boating, driving past, or walking on the beach - you will enjoy this audiobook. I enjoyed hearing Loreen's descriptions of some of the port towns and lighthouses that my wife and I have driven through or boated past. Great historical overview of some of the industry along the shore of the lake decades ago. I am anxious to listen to Loreen's book about her journey exploring the diverse islands of the five Great Lakes.
