  • Playing to the Gallery Audiobook by Grayson Perry

    Title: Playing to the Gallery
Subtitle: Helping Contemporary Art in Its Struggle to Be Understood
    Author: Grayson Perry
    Narrator: Grayson Perry
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 2 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-04-14
    Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 70 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Interviews & Panels
    Publisher's Summary:
"It's easy to feel insecure around art and its appreciation, as though we cannot enjoy certain artworks if we don't have a lot of academic and historical knowledge. But if there's one message that I want you to take away it's that anybody can enjoy art and anybody can have a life in the arts - even me! For even I, an Essex transvestite potter, have been let in by the artworld mafia."
Now Grayson Perry is a fully paid-up member of the art establishment, he wants to show that any of us can appreciate art (after all, there is a reason he's called his book Playing to the Gallery and not Sucking Up to the Academic Elite).
In this live recording from the Reith Lectures (2013), he talks about his own funny, personal journey through the art world and answers the basic questions that might occur to us in an art gallery but seem too embarrassing to ask. Questions such as: What is good or bad art - and does it even matter? Is there any way to test if something is art, other than a large group of people standing around looking at it? Is art still capable of shocking us or have we seen it all before? Can you be a lovable character and a serious artist - what is a serious artist anyway? And what happens if you place a piece of art in a rubbish dump?
    Members Reviews:
    Not a book
This is four lectures availble for free at the BBC website which is why I gave it a bad review. The four lectures though where fantastic.
    Substance Behind the Shimmering Eyeshadow
Would you listen to Playing to the Gallery again? Why?
You can't afford an art piece created by Grayson Perry so for a single Audible credit have a listen to his insightful contemporary art world overview. I did and will again.
What did you like best about this story?
Listening is like being with Perry after his bath but before the makeup. Although Perry is in his customary drag attire when delivering his orations there are no distractions from his messages which are humorously honest and at times ...just honest.
Which character as performed by Grayson Perry was your favorite?
Grayson Perry is a character of himself in this biographical reflective psychoanalysis of the contemporary art world.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
A little laughter and a lot of reflection.
    Any additional comments?
A trustworthy one point perspective of contemporary art history from the self proclaimed cynical artist Grayson Perrry .
    Joyful and inspiring
Grayson Perry is marvelous; his perspective on the art world is refreshing and lighthearted, yet aptly serious when necessary. A short listen, but I found myself laughing along with the audience, and inspired by how he defines quality. The man is a joker, but he really knows his stuff - can't recommend enough. Only caveat - too short to use your credits for! Buy this one, and save the credit for something longer.
    Grayson the legend
loved it!! inspirational and funny! Also I'd recommend this for all art students to listen to as so much worthy advice from an amazing get artist!
    Wonderful stuff
An object lesson in what it is to be a person. Funny, touching and insightful.

    Great interview
I really enjoyed listening to this - although it's short, it was a nice length for my commute, something different to check out for the morning. Check it out!
    Mildly Interesting
I am pleased I listened to this short interview, because I was about to purchase the audio book of My Reading Life narrated by the author.
Pat Conroy is a magnificent writer, but oh my ... he has a dreadful voice for interview, let alone as a narrator of an entire book !
I've found this to be true about some authors, Stephen King has not been gifted with a pleasant reading voice either, yet many of his books have appealed to me ( I'd previously refused to read any of King's books, so my husband pursued me to listen to him read me the entire Dark Tower volumes over a few months. )
    I do go on..lol
    Author of My reading life
The story of his mother reading to him in different character voices brings back find memories of my mom reading to me. I enjoyed this conversation.
    Etc
it was an okay read. Nothing to write home about, but it was short.
What joy to hear Pat Conroy's voice
This is a short interview Pat Conroy gave after recording My Reading Life, which
I read a few years back and loved. The world lost a great voice when he passed away, but this brought back memories of hearing him at author events.

Metallica, who are unparalleled in the hard rock market, have sold well over 30 million albums. They are a band that refused to compromise. They have stuck to what they know, and they have abided by their own rules. Lars says, "As time goes by, Metallica are appealing to more and more people its great when people get something positive out of our music, because it's not all dark and gloomy."
This is a fantastically revealing audiobiog, during which the band explains how they connect with the fans, discuss their relationship with each other, and share those personal moments. This is not a music release by the artist or record company, and sound quality may vary. We get a personal insight into the motivation and inspiration for Metallica songs and how and why they have always set themselves apart from other bands. "We don't want to be limited - people are welcome to come along for the ride but that ride will cover a lot of ground, musically, lyrically and everyway - we want to make people less narrow minded."
Metallica's Story is revealing and unique and must not be missed by fans, collectors and music historians.
    Editorial Reviews:
Those looking for a concentrated dose of insight into one of the world's biggest heavy metal bands need look no further. In this well-put-together mini-audiobiography, Metallica's members offer insight into their creative process, relationships with fans, issues with their label, and evolution as both musicians and human beings. Interviewers Chris Tetle and others ask probing questions, which receive intelligent and wide-ranging answers. Fans will appreciate this window into the life of the heavy metal pioneers.
    Members Reviews:
    Truly awful
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Where to start... um, if it were actually formatted in some cogent way (this is NOT a book, it is merely snippets of interviews). The entire thing lasted about 40 minutes, which is not a book it's a PAMPHLET. It was NOT an audio biography, as it claims, but rather loosely thrown together bits of audio with no chronology, no purpose and no autobiographical detail. AND behind the spoken words there was a guitar loop which lasted THE ENTIRE DAMN BOOK. The whole thing was utter junk and completely misrepresented by the title. It's only interviews with ONE BAND MEMBER, and all from a single session!
What could the authors have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Nothing. This junk has no reason to be an audiobook.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of the narrators?
    Doesn't matter in this case.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Metallica Story?
    I would have cut everything.
    Any additional comments?
Just call this what it is: an interview with Lars from Metallica. Calling it an audiobiogrpahy is a flagrant misrepresentation. Please refund me my credit.
    42 min?!?
Would you try another book from the authors and/or the narrators?
no, I don't wanna get anything else from the guy who writes books I can finish on my way from home to work (one way). If I knew it's only 42 min I would think twice.

    Interview with famous anthropologist
The fascination that Jack Weatherford has with Mongolia come through the interview loud and clear. He makes me want to hop a plane and go see Mongolia myself. They discuss the two book he wrote one about Genghis Khan and the other about Genghis Khans wife's and daughter in the Mongol Queens. I read both books and they are great. They talked about his book on money and one on American Indians but just briefly. I was hoping the interview would provide me with more insight into Weatherford, which it did but I wish there was more. The interview was only 11 minutes. It is great that Audible provides these short free interviews of authors.
    Good Interview but too short.
I wish this could have been longer. Jack weatherford is a great writer and speaker. I hope he writes a book about his years in Mongolia, the trials, tribulations, culture and experiences experienced during his research.
    Scripted A/Q
This was the most awful conversation that I ever heard between two people. It seems like the questions was written after Weatherford express his comments. The book is not much better either. I'm not a fan of this author at all, even more so after listening to this interview.
    worst interview ever!!!
How on Earth hired this interviewer. What a shame... almost decided not to buy the book after such a horrible interview.
    A fascinating man
I could listen to Jack Weatherford talk more about his fascination with the people of Mongolia.

    Editorial Reviews:
Actor F. Murray Abraham found such joy and depth in playing Bottom in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream that he wrote a book about the comic play. In this 2005 appearance at New York City's 92nd Street Y, Abraham reads a passage from his humorous and insightful book, then becomes a "jackass" who summons "Titania" (played by actress Kathleen Widdoes) to the stage with his boisterous singing. Abraham and Widdoes then collaborate to enact other famous scenes from Shakespeare's works, including the famous balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. David Yezzi gives a lengthy introduction of Abraham and the program concludes with a question and answer period.

Title: An Interview with Kathryn Stockett, Author of 'The Help'
    Author: Kathryn Stockett

    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-01-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1109 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Interviews & Panels
    Publisher's Summary:
Kathryn Stockett is the best-selling author of The Help, Audible's 2009 pick for Audiobook of the Year. In this interview she tells us about her role in choosing the book's narrator, and reveals what she's working on next.
    About The Help:
Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step. Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid, Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared, and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.
Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her 17th white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.
Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.
Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

    Worth a Quick Listen
What did you like best about An Interview with Kathryn Stockett, Author of 'The Help'? What did you like least?
    Her background in Mississippi
Would you recommend An Interview with Kathryn Stockett, Author of 'The Help' to your friends? Why or why not?
If you like The Help, I think this is worth hearing.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Her talking about her own maid.
Did An Interview with Kathryn Stockett, Author of 'The Help' inspire you to do anything?
    No
    Short and sweet!!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I loved The Help! I listened to this after I finished "The Help" because I wanted a little more of Kathryn Stockett's own story. Really, she is so sweet and genuine.
It is a joy hearing her talk about the making of The Help. However, this was an interview audio and I don't know that I would listen to more than a short piece of an interview on a single book or movie.
The interview covers some back story about the voice talent on the audio book and some news on the movie and such.
If youve listened to books by Kathryn Stockett before, how does this one compare?
    no I haven't
    Any additional comments?
not the interview, unless it was added to the 'end' of the movie - like how a movie came to be sort of thing.
    thanks audible
