An excellent summary of an inspiring memoir
This is a Summary and Analysis about "Brain on Fire: My Year of Madness" an award-winning memoir and instant New York Times bestseller by Susannah Cahalan, a 24 year old reporter at the New York Post. As someone also diagnosed with an autoimmune disease back in 2006, this book comes close to my heart. Cahalan recounts her battle with a rare, debilitating autoimmune disease that led to psychosis and, eventually, catatonia - that started with what looked liked a bug bite on her arm. She was previously healthy and she never would have thought that one day she would wake up in her hospital bed with almost no recollection of her battle with this autoimmune disease that almost cost her her sanity and life in general. As she struggled and fought, she eventually obtained a proper diagnosis with the help of one very talented doctor. This was the start of her long road to recovery. But first, she faced a terrifying descent into madness. This summary book also provides the reader information on the author's style and perspective, character analysis, important people.
I love the fact that her family and her boyfriend, Stephen, stood by her with their inspiring faith in her, refusing to believe that she was psychotic and needed to be institutionalized. Brain on Fire is an unforgettable exploration of memory and identity, faith and love, and a compelling memoir of survival, perseverance and never giving up. A memoir that is an inspiration to me, and to the world!
I recommend you read this summary if you don't want to dive in straight into reading all 288 pages of the original book. This will help you decide whether you want to get your copy of the original book or not.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.
    A Look at Encephalitis
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This summary of "Brain on Fire" kept my attention the entire time. The book is a memoir where the author tells of her experience with a rare autoimmune disease. The symptoms that she experiences are bizzare and included foaming at the mouth, seizures, feeling that she was being abducted, and losing her ability to speak.

Eat, Pray, Love is a memoir of Elizabeth Gilbert's experiences and relationships on a one-year journey across the world in the pursuit of pleasure, spiritual devotion, and the balance between the two. After her divorce and a failed relationship that followed, Liz embarked on a three-nation journey, with plans to spend four months each in Italy, where she intended to pursue her love of food and language; in India, where she would study at her guru's ashram, and on the island of Bali in Indonesia, where she hoped to find and maintain balance in her life.
Liz's story begins with a moment of despair that gripped her on her bathroom floor at a time when she was coming to terms with her thoughts of ending her marriage. Though she was not a very religious person, in a moment of desperation, Liz called out to God to ask what to do....

    Not too girly
To be human is to chase after meaning. "Eat, Pray, Love" is a memoir of Elizabeth Gilbert's experiences and relationships on a one-year journey across the world in the pursuit of pleasure, spiritual devotion, and the balance between the two. Its easy to feel a divide between what we want to do, and what we feel is right. Balancing what brings pleasure and what brings spiritual peace is what Gilbert chased in her experience of a lifetime.
This Instaread review was great because it summarized a book I might have overlooked. Not going to lie, every time I heard the phrase: eat, pray, love, I thought of another cheesy Pinterest meme. And undoubtedly, Gilbert's memoir is targeting women readers, but this Instaread book captured the message in a concise and moving way. I'm now excited to dive into "Eat, Pray, Love" and discover the power of self-exploration.
I loved this review because it gave additional insight into the characters, the themes, and the relationships. It was a valuable resource to better understand the message of the book, and I highly recommend! I was given a copy of this book to review.
    Great summary!
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a summary of "Eat, Pray, Love" and is not the original book. This summary is intended for those who'd like a quick read or would like a companion for the original. I have heard of the movie "Eat, Pray, Love" and have always been interested in what it was about. I don't have too much time to read, and this summary was great for me because I was able to read it in less than 20 minutes. I found the summary to be interesting and well written. The book is about a woman who seeks for good food in Italian, religion in India, and balance in Bali. After reading this book, I have decided to put the movie on my watch list.
THIS SUMMARY IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHY I HAVE PERSONALLY FOUND INSTAREAD TO BE A VALUABLE SERVICE
This is an overview of the actual book âEat, Pray, Love.â Kind of like an abbreviated Cliff's Notes for the full book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Sometimes, the wilderness is the only place God can get your undivided attention.
Everyone finds himself or herself in a wilderness at some point: financial wildernesses, emotional wildernesses, relational wildernesses, health wildernesses, reputation wildernesses, failure wildernesses, or unemployment wildernesses, and the list goes on and on. In those moments, we are utterly dependent on God for well-timed help. If he doesn't come through, we're finished.
For 40 years, two million Israelites were in the wilderness, and God fed them supernaturally every morning with manna, teaching people who doubted him that he can be trusted with everything they needed to survive. This is a lesson we need to learn, too.
In personal stories and applications of biblical lessons, Manna reveals how God specializes in making a way where there is no way. He proved it every day to the nation of Israel, never missing a day of being faithful. He was never late, and he was never early. He was always just in time. And he will be for you.

    Too wordy.
I got this book and struggled to make it through even the first chaper; 24 pages. It is so wordy and really saying very little. I scanned through the book past the first chaper and it was more of the same. I am near the end of my wilderness so perhaps if I would have read this several years ago it would have been more helpful. I recommend Victory in the Wilderness by John Bevere. That is an awesome book!

    Publisher's Summary:
"The life of a neurosurgeon isn't an easy one, and Ben has been required to go above and beyond the call of duty almost constantly. The life of a neurosurgeon's wife isn't much easier. But it's all been worth it. Together, we've been through poverty, tragedy, wealth, and joy, and we've had each other's backs. I love that guy!" (Candy Carson)
Like most Americans, you might think of Ben Carson as a trailblazing brain surgeon and, in the last few years, as an outspoken commentator on national issues. But his wife of more than 40 years knows him as so much more: a loving husband, a devoted father, a devout Christian, a committed philanthropist, and a fierce patriot. Now Candy Carson introduces us to the private side of a very public figure as she shares the inspiring story of their marriage and their family.
Like her husband, Candy grew up in Detroit, one of five children of a teacher and a factory worker. Also like Ben, she overcame her humble background through determination, hard work, and perseverance, earning a scholarship to attend Yale University. In that strange new world, she focused on her studies, her music, and her deepening spiritual life. She attended church with a handsome older student who liked to tease her but never assumed he would be anything more than a friend to her. But Ben and Candy quickly became inseparable, and they married soon after she graduated, with Ben still in medical school, preparing for his career as a soon-to-be world-famous pediatric neurosurgeon.
In A Doctor in the House, Candy reveals many stories that have never been told before, despite the media spotlight on Dr. Carson in recent years. She shows us what it was like when they moved to Baltimore to join the community centered around Johns Hopkins Hospital. She describes how their family evolved with the births of their three sons and the tragic miscarriage of their twins.

    Title: It's Not Your Fault!
Subtitle: True Stories of Abused Women
    Author: William H. Joiner Jr.
    Narrator: Valerie Gilbert
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-28-15
    Publisher: William H. Joiner Jr.
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The first time he hit me, we were at a dance. I was talking to another guy at the bar. Benny came up behind me, turned me around, and slammed a beer bottle into my face. (Mary)
When I found out I was pregnant, I thought we would be a big, happy family. That all ended when he got drunk and kicked me in the stomach. I miscarried. (Martha)
He told me, "If you ever tell anyone our secret, I will tell them that you are the one who asked for this." Naturally, being only nine years old, I had no idea what he really meant, but I will never forget what happened next. (Paula)
Upon moving to our new home, there were new rules. I was allowed no car and no phone, as before. But now I was also not allowed shoes, so I could not run away. If I did everything right and didn't make him angry, he would allow me to buy food. (Ashley)
When William Joiner was asked to write the true story of an abused woman, he put out a call for the personal experiences of women who had suffered abuse. Stunned by the vast, gut-wrenching responses, he vowed to write this broader account of their stories in order to give hope, courage, and resources to women in need.
Ninety percent of the net profits from this book will be donated to organizations that help abused women.

    This needs to be told.
What an important message. It's amazing to think that there are so many woman in abusive situations. Information like this is exactly what's necessary to let victims know that they CAN get help and that they aren't alone. Kudos to the brave women who told their painful stories and to William Joiner for writing this book.
    Must read about Abuse
The succinct accounts of these women were bravely told and carefully edited. Thanks for such insight into the world of abusive relationships. I didn't know a single black dot meant abuse. Thanks for the info.
    Hope for abused women.
This is a good book and should be in every women's shelter. I've never been in the situations described, but there is hope for those who have been.

    Title: Almost Anywhere
Subtitle: Road-Trip Ruminations on Love, Nature, Recovery, and Nonsense
    Author: Krista Schlyer
    Narrator: Marisa Vitali
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-15-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
What do you do when your world ends? At 28 years old, Krista Schlyer sold almost everything she owned and packed the rest of it in a station wagon bound for the American wild. Her two best friends joined her - one a grumpy, grieving introvert, the other a feisty dog - and together they sought out every national park, historic site, forest, and wilderness they could get to before their money ran out or their minds gave in. The journey began as a desperate escape from urban isolation, heartbreak, and despair but became an adventure beyond imagining.
Chronicling their colorful escapade, Almost Anywhere explores the courage, cowardice, and heroics that live in all of us as well as the life of nature and the nature of life. This eloquent and accessible memoir is at once an immersion in the pain of losing someone particularly close and especially young and a healing journey of a broken life given over to the whimsy and humor of living on the road.

Enjoyed a story of dealing with grief and healing through nature.

Have you listened to any of Marisa Vitalis other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't heard any of her other performances but enjoyed this one. She adds expression to the characters and made me think the author could be reading it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
At 10 hours it is a little llong for that. I preferred to savor it on my commute to and from work.
So bad I trired to return it

    Publisher's Summary:
Anne Frank, it has been said, gave a face and a name to the horror of the Holocaust. This is her story. It relates how Anne, her family, and their friends hid in secret rooms - "the Annex" - in an Amsterdam warehouse for 25 months. Anne, just 13 when the family moved in and only 15 when the Gestapo at last broke down the doors of her secret world, found hope where there was only fear and the first blush of love when outside and all around there washed a sea of hate.
Wrote Ernst Schnable, a German writer who has researched Frank's life: "Out of the millions that were silenced, this voice no louder than a child's whisper has outlasted the shouts of the murderers and has soared above the voices of time."
    Critic Reviews:
"An incredible reading of Anne Frank's diary. Optimistic, enthusiastic, and a vibrant tribute to an intelligent young woman whose life was cut short so tragically in the Nazi concentration camp at Belsen. Anne speaks to all ages and all people." (
    Lawrence Eagle Tribune)
"The young voice of Susan Adams paces and inflects this diary with utmost skill. Also commendable is the fine afterword in which the historical context and the remaining details of Ann Frank's life are explained." (

    Visionär? Genie? Getriebener?

Pourquoi ? J'avais honte ? Peur qu'on me plaigne ?

Love letter to handicapped sons by a loving father
This was a somewhat unusual small book - made up of short vignettes about the author's two handicapped sons. It was billed as a "love letter", but was more and less than that - often deviating into somewhat severe views of his sons' handicaps. Not sure the author really knew what he wanted the book to be. Nevertheless, it was worth the read.
A funny book about a very serious subject
This is a fast read; the French is easy, except for the slang. Fournier takes an unconventional approach to life and bares his soul with wit and honesty.

    Publisher's Summary:
Rooted in two vastly different cultures, a young man struggles to understand himself, find his place in the world, and reconnect with his mother - and her remote tribe in the deepest jungles of the Amazon rainforest - in this powerful memoir that combines adventure, history, and anthropology.
"My Yanomami family called me by name. Anyopo-we. What it means, I soon learned, is 'long way around': I'd taken the long way around obstacles to be here among my people, back where I started. A 20-year detour."
For much of his young life, David Good was torn between two vastly different worlds. The son of an American anthropologist and a tribeswoman from a distant part of the Amazon, it took him 20 years to embrace his identity, reunite with the mother who left him when he was six, and claim his heritage.
The Way Around is Good's amazing chronicle of self-discovery. Moving from the wilds of the Amazonian jungle to the paved confines of suburban New Jersey and back, it is the story of his parents, his American scientist father and his mother who could not fully adapt to the Western lifestyle. Good writes sympathetically about his mother's abandonment and the deleterious effect it had on his young self; of his rebellious teenage years marked by depression and drinking, and the near-fatal car accident that transformed him and gave him purpose to find a way back to his mother.
A compelling tale of recovery and discovery, The Way Around is a poignant, fascinating exploration of what family really means and the way that the strongest bonds endure, even across decades and worlds.
