    Great Tales for Dog Lovers!
What a fun read! Jennifer shares what it's like to be a dog groomer with delightful and witty stories of the dogs she has groomed and come to love. Some of the dog's antics had me laughing out loud, and others had me gasp with surprise. At the end of each tale, Jennifer describes the traits and grooming needs of the different breeds she's groomed, so not only is this book entertaining, it's also educational! Grooming Tales is a great gift and/or read for anyone who loves, has, or is considering adopting, a dog! I only wish it had been a bit longer. Highly recommended!
    Save Your Money
Each section was several sentences about a dog of a particular breed, and then some general information about that breed. There was no depth or detail at all. I was very disappointed in this book.

Title: The Marion Experiment: Long-Term Solitary Confinement and the Supermax Movement
Subtitle: Elmer H. Johnson & Carol H. Johnson Series in Criminology
Author: Stephen C. Richards, Greg Newbold
    Narrator: Gregg Rizzo
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-16-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Taking listeners into the darkness of solitary confinement, this searing collection of convict experiences, academic research, and policy recommendations shines a light on the proliferation of supermax (super-maximum-security) prisons and the detrimental effects of long-term, high-security confinement on prisoners and their families.
Stephen C. Richards, an ex-convict who served time in nine federal prisons before earning his PhD in criminology, argues the supermax prison era began in 1983 at USP Marion in southern Illinois, where the first "control units" were built by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The Marion Experiment, told from a convict criminology perspective, offers an introduction to long-term solitary confinement and supermax prisons, followed by a series of first-person accounts by prisoners - some of whom are scholars - previously or currently incarcerated in high-security facilities. They include some of the roughest prisons in the western world. Scholars also address the widespread "marionization" of solitary confinement; its impact on female, adolescent, and mentally ill prisoners and families; and international perspectives on imprisonment.
As a bold step toward rethinking supermax prisons, Richards presents the most comprehensive view of the topic to date to raise awareness of the negative aspects of long-term solitary confinement and the need to reevaluate how prisoners are housed and treated.
The book was published by Southern Illinois University Press.
    Members Reviews:
    Prison as state-sanctioned torture
Edited by a prominent convict criminologist, this collection of essays highlights two important trends in North American corrections: the overuse of solitary confinement as a form of state-sanctioned torture, and the super-max architecture of penitentiaries. This is important because both Canada and the U.S. promote themselves as models of world penology -- which is simply pure nonsense. The collection includes ethnographic work by convicts as well as more policy-oriented pieces by respected academics, and represents an important critique. That critique is even more relevant since many of the writers are convicts or ex-convicts, some with advanced doctorates in penology. This is a point-of-view which is often suppressed in mainstream publications -- particularly by the Government. Highly recommended for students studying corrections. Finally, I am reminded that this book is about the Punishment Industry -- an "industry" analyzed by the late criminologist Nils Christie.

An extraordinary book by extraordinary writers.
This was a great insight to what prisoners have to endure with the long term isolation. It is a shame that we treat human beings in this manner. They may have done crimes, but this is cruel and unusual for most of the inmates that go through this torture. Anyone who thinks this is an acceptable form of punishment needs to be placed in solitary confinement themselves for a couple of weeks and then determine if it is a good idea. Our prison system is wrong and broken on a multitude of levels.

  • Against the Wind Audiobook by Lee DiPietro

    Title: Against the Wind
Subtitle: An Ironwomans Race for Her Familys Survival
    Author: Lee DiPietro
    Narrator: Sasha Dunbrooke
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-12-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
To one woman, running was more than a passion - it was a lesson in perseverance. Lee DiPietro discovered the exhilaration of endurance athletics when she ran her first half marathon in her late 20s. From that day forward, she took on every marathon that she could, and, despite having to juggle her running with her responsibilities as mother and wife, she quickly established herself as one of the best runners in the United States. Over the next 30 years, Lee won race after race, running in everything from local competitions to the three most challenging endurance races: the Boston Marathon, the New York City Marathon, and the Ironman triathlon.
What she did not know, as she climbed the ranks of the running world, was the struggle her family would face and the role her running would play in helping her persevere in the face of great adversity. When Lee's husband was diagnosed with cancer and her son suffered a devastating accident, she found herself falling back on the lessons she had learned as a marathoner to help her endure the sudden family trials. In Against the Wind, DiPietro takes us through her harrowing yearlong fight for the lives of her husband and son. Despite the great difficulties she faced, throughout it all remained her love for running. Against the Wind is a story that will resonate with listeners whose lives have been affected by cancer as well as those who are dedicated to endurance sports. It proves that running is a tool to save lives - far from just a sport and test of one's mettle.

This is what an Ironwoman is like! I loved it.
Where does Against the Wind rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Top 5 and I've listened to a lot!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were several but I actually go teary eyed when Lee talked about her son being able to walk again and again when her husband's one year follow up appointment.
    Any additional comments?
The narrator is fantastic. She made this book more enjoyable. I loved the straightforward way the author put herself out there, good, bad, tragic, happy, tough and even tougher. As a runner I have felt some of what she talks about in terms of needing to problem solve and not give up easily. I can only imagine that is X10 when you add biking and swimming to the mix. She has heart and a very inspiring person. I listened to the book during my long commute to work and she really made the time pass enjoyably. I even took it along with my on my run and I was so in to it that one day I ran 3 extra miles just so I could hear the rest of the good part! If you enjoy memoirs about how people can be inspiring and persevere even when life keeps dealing them blow, after blow, you will really like this book. I highly recommend it.
    Emotional ride

    Publisher's Summary:
Author Neil R. Beller, Jr., uses his merry, yet mischievous memoirs to wrap you up in the warm blanket of his youth. The memories he paints a picture of aren't sappy, wistful, or mushy though. They are bursting with chuckle-provoking antics and with humorous sentimentality that we can all relate to.
Born and raised in the quiet suburb of Carney, Maryland, in the '60s and '70s, this Baltimore native's novel contains tales of growing up with a father who employs a stare-and-breathe method of discipline, an endearing, flaming red-headed mother who disciplines his antics in public and laughs at them in private, and a band of neighbors and friends who join Neil in his quirky misadventures.
Allow him to transport you in the "way back machine" to a time when simple fun was enjoyed by all. Take the "big blue bus" down memory lane in Missing Pine Park.

Took a Trip back to Yesteryear
What did you love best about Missing Pine Park: A Humorous Look at the '60s and '70s from 'Kick the Can' to Becoming a Man?
The author's amazing memory. It enables him to share on a detailed level. You get to hear all of the small stuff-things that add up to the how and the why.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The author's Dad. His breathing may have been brutal however, Little Neil's love for him was so touching. I heard him choke up near the end. I did too.
What three words best describe Neil R. Beller Jr.s performance?
    Flat. Precise. Tender.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did love his pronunciation of words, and his accent. I laughed over the pranks, I cried when his Mom cried, and near the end...in March.
    Any additional comments?
I loved knowing that my life was also similar and simple in those days-as was Neil's.
    Great memoir
I really like memoirs, especially those focusing on childhood years, so this one fits the bill nicely. The author is a bit younger than me but much of what he talks about in the book brought back good memories of my growing up years. A pleasant listen, with a lot of funny stories thrown in.
If I had one complaint, it'd be that they put in a short little bit of music in between the sections of the book. That gets annoying, but other than that, this is not a book to be missed if you want a trip down memory lane.

    Author: Elizabeth Meyer
    Narrator: Cris Dukehart
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-25-15
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 22 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Elizabeth Meyer stumbled upon a career in the midst of planning her own father's funeral, which she turned into an upbeat party with Rolling Stones music, thousands of dollars' worth of her mother's favorite flowers, and a personalized eulogy. Starting out as a receptionist, Meyer quickly found she had a knack for helping people cope with their grief as well as creating fitting send-offs for some of the city's most high-powered residents. Meyer has seen it all: two women who found out their deceased husband (yes, singular) was living a double life, a famous corpse with a missing brain, and funerals that cost more than most weddings. By turns illuminating, emotional, and darkly humorous, Good Mourning is a lesson in how the human heart grieves and grows - whether you're wearing this season's couture or drugstore flip-flops.

    Title: Chomp, Chomp, Chomp
Subtitle: How I Survived a Bear Attack and Other Cautionary Tales
    Author: Allena Hansen
    Narrator: Allena Hansen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-28-15
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
For Allena Hansen, a vicious bear attack was "no biggie" compared to the trauma inflicted by her refined '60s upbringing, her stint as Playboy's token intellectual bimbo, and her cowgirl angst, which is enough to knock even Job for a loop.
A tragicomic collection of latter-day Grimm's fairy tales, Chomp, Chomp, Chomp: How I Survived a Bear Attack and Other Cautionary Tales introduces Hansen as the smart-assed socialite and full-contact gardener that Hunter S. Thompson once toasted as "the distaff Hunter S. Thompson" and Andrew Breitbart called out as "the coolest person in the room".
Offering herself up as a cautionary example, Hansen poses the age-old question: "What makes a survivor?" Listen to this book and remain as puzzled as ever. But as you marvel at her uncompromisingly bad judgment and uncanny resilience, you just might learn something that could save your life.
    Members Reviews:
    The hits don't stop coming
Allena Hansen has led an incredible life and tells of it with grace, humor, wit and frankness. I enjoyed every minute of this performance/book. Well, at times it was more heart breaking, infuriating or disturbing than enjoyable but that all makes for one hell of a good listen.

  • Rescue Pilot Audiobook by Jerry Grayson

    Title: Rescue Pilot
    Subtitle: Cheating the Sea
    Author: Jerry Grayson
    Narrator: David Thorpe
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-16-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 20 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Jerry Grayson is an ordinary man who chose an extraordinary career. At age 17 he became the youngest helicopter pilot ever to serve in the Royal Navy. By age 25 he was the most decorated peacetime naval pilot in history.
For the navy's search-and-rescue pilots, getting to work is both an adventure and an ordeal. Whether rescuing a wounded fighter pilot who has ditched in the sea, saving desperate survivors from a sinking ship, or picking up a grievously ill crewman from the deck of a nuclear-armed submarine that is playing a cat-and-mouse game with the Soviet navy, Jerry Grayson has lived a life of unparalleled excitement and adventure.
His finest hour came during the infamous Fastnet Yacht Race of 1979, in which 25 yachts were lost. When a catastrophic storm enveloped the competitors he and his crew pushed their Wessex helicopter to its absolute limits and put their own lives at risk, flying into hurricane-force winds to winch shipwrecked sailors from heaving, tempestuous seas. An investiture at Buckingham Palace with her majesty the queen was the result.
Being a rescue pilot is fast paced because there is no choice. Lives are at stake, and pilots must move and think fast. Jerry Grayson's inside view of this heroic service is as inspirational as it is celebratory. Excitingly told, frequently funny, but also very poignant, Jerry's story is not an account of just one man's deeds - it is a salute to all the men and women he worked with who were able to turn tragedies into triumphs.
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting and entertaining
Would you listen to Rescue Pilot again? Why?
I expect I will after a few years.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The hilarious Admiral scene... if you've listened, you'll know what I mean. If not, I won't spoil it!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes - I listened to the whole thing in a couple of days.
    Any additional comments?
I found it fascinating, inspirational and energising. At different moments I was laughing out loud, tensing up in anxiety, and sighing in relief. It's particularly good for people interested in the Fastnet race, operations of aircraft carriers, or good rescue stories.
A very enjoyable but too brief account of SAR life
Would you consider the audio edition of Rescue Pilot to be better than the print version?
    Not seen the print version
What other book might you compare Rescue Pilot to, and why?
I've read many books on combat flying but this is rather different with the aim to save lives rather then take them, so i can make no comparison to other books i've read.
    Rollicking aviation adventure
I heard Jerry's interview on Conversations (ABC radio Australia). I was captivated by the stories of his adventures and achievements as a Search and Rescue helicopter pilot. His book was just as entertaining and enjoyable to listen to. Mostly cheerful, funny and entertaining with moments of sadness and introspection.
