Poor narration

The narrator speaks way over the top, which is in it self not to bad but he puts the accents randomly in a sentence in such a way that I found it hard to understand the content.

Did not even made it trough the first chapter. I bought another version of the same book and start listening that one right away. What a difference! I advise against getting this version of the book. Luckily there are lots more to chose from.

Great listening

My son and I have really enjoyed this audio book.

We love the narration.

The Classic Adventure

Jules Verne created one of the greatest adventures of all-time in this tale that revolves around a chance bet. A remarkable cast of characters and stunning locales and bursting with excitement that only a Master could conjure.

The best download

This particular book is by far the better of all books titled Around the world in 80 days by Jules Verne.

The narrator is better, not mono tone.

Excellent over all. Just the best.

Terrible narration

Great story ruined by terrible narration by someone who couldn't even pronounce Quay! American pronunciations of a classic English book ruined the experience. Shame....... Its a great book.

Title: The Black Tulip

Author: Alexandre Dumas

Narrator: Rosalyn Landor

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 5 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-28-09

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 23 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Alexandre Dumas's novels are notable for their suspense and excitement, their foul deeds, hairsbreadth escapes, and glorious victories. In The Black Tulip, the real hero is no musketeer, but a flower.

The novel, a deceptively simple story, is set in Holland in 1672 during the amazing tulipmania of the 17th century that brought wealth to some and ruin to many. The story weaves the historical events surrounding the brutal murder of John de Witte and his brother Cornelius into a tale of romantic love. The novel is also a timeless political allegory in which Dumas, drawing on the violence and crimes of history, makes his case against tyranny and puts all his energies into creating a symbol of justice and tolerance: the fateful tulipa negra.

Two Cheers for The Black Tulip

Since I was a child I've loved "The Three Musketeers" and its sequels, "Twenty Years After" and "The Vicomte de Bragelonne". They are among my favorite books of all, so I'm ever interested in a "new" book by Alexandre Dumas. "The Black Tulip" was one of those books of his I'd not read, nor even heard of until recently.

The story is set in The Netherlands during the time of William of Orange (1670s). It involves the civil unrest of the time, but is primarily concerned with Cornelius Van Baerle, who has no interest in politics and is devoted to his tulips (and his quest to create the first all-black blossom); Rosa, the plucky young woman who loves and helps him; and the scheming and wicked Isaac Boxtel, who labors to acquire the elusive black tulip for himself, stooping even to falsely imprison the naive Cornelius.

The story becomes surprisingly exciting, a true nail-biter even, and has the historical scenery, action, romance, and humor that draw me back to Dumas again and again. I don't love "The Black Tulip" like I do "The Three Musketeers" and its sequels, but I still find much to enjoy in it, and I plan to return to the book again in the years to come.

Very fun read

This is no "the three musketeers". But still a very fun read... Some stuffs in the story are not realistic... I am mostly impressed by Dewitt brothers, their contribution to their country and the ungratefulness of the people in general.. Although it is very small part of story, I can't help but feel astonished at the whole affairs.. Rosa is definitely lovely as a character

Enjoyable novel. Maybe buy a different copy.

Bought this book for husband. It arrived early and in great shape. He is thoroughly enjoying the book bc he is a Dumas fan (hence the 5 stars). Unfortunately, this particular paperback(new) is falling apart as he is reading it-still, it is a wonderful story and I don't regret my purchase.

Perfect for schools

As an avid fan of Dumas I decided to take a break from my research on the British Enlightenment to read this short (by Dumas standards) novel. It did not disappoint. Set in the early 1670s in Holland, it is at once an adventure story and a love story.

Unlike Dumas's two most famous works, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers, it does not carry any enormous questions about tye difference between the state's justice and the individual's, or about whether serving justice makes victims happy and whole.

Not an easy lecture although Gustav Meyrink's works are recommended to everybody who loves the specific genre of thrillers about the Subconscious and Paranormal. The Kindle Version of the German Original is well made and good to read.

Meyrinks bestes Buch

Kann man jedem Suchenden empfehlen, wer gefunden hat, sucht weiter. Alles, was ist, ist schon immer gewesen, und alles, was sein wird, ist auch schon immer gewesen.

One of the best books to give an impression of the Prague that existed during the times of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and of the Jewish world of old.

Classical reading

Famous German writing author living in Prague describes the dark atmosphere of enigmatic Czech capitol in the beginning of the 20th century. Golem is an artificial medieval person created in Prague by the legendary Jewish rabbi. A must-reading for all who are interested in German written Czech literatura, e.g. for Kafka or Max Brod (or Rilke...).

The book arrived incomplete the second part is missing

Three Stars

I love Jules Verne, but this book doesn't his best one!"!!!

Great Listening Experience!

Would you listen to The Death of Ivan Ilyich again? Why?

I've already listened to it twice. Of course, the book itself is wonderful, but Mr Guidall's narration is truly a performance. He handles the difficult Russian names with grace (and perfect pronunciation) and does a tremendous job of giving each character a distinct, recognizable voice.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ivan himself -- such an interesting study of the end of a life.

Some Things are Better on the Page

The problem and the reason for one star is not with the book nor with the excellent reading. I just did not find this book fulfilling in the audio edition. I have tried to figure out why and have concluded that some literature is best left on the page (for me at least). I enjoy the classics and enjoy seeing the prose - I suppose. I may try an audio version of Swann's Way to test this theory, but it was written for the page and I enjoy it in that form. I do willingly listen to the New and Old Testaments without the same effect.

Anyone interested in Tolstoy, do not be discouraged from listening to this classic or another. The audio vertsion was just not suited to my frame of mind I suppose.

Título: En Busca Del Tiempo Perdido, Pt. 2

Subtitular: A la Sombra de las Muchachas en Flor (Texto Completo)

Autor: Marcel Proust

Narrador: Daniel Quintero

Formato: Unabridged

Duración: 3 hrs and 9 mins

Idioma: Español

Fecha de publicación: 11-26-07

Editor: Yoyo USA, Inc

Calificaciones: 3.5 de 5 de 18 votos

Categorías: Classics, European Literature

Resumen del editor:

This monumental masterpiece by Marcel Proust (1871-1922) is an immense portrait of an entire society and is considered as one of the greatest novels in all literature. As its title shows, Proust tried to recover in his work what the past had been, and in doing so, made an incisive analysis of his times, with unforgettable characters - most of them were based on his acquaintances. This work reflects one of the foremost travels through the subconscious ever written.

Opiniones de los miembros:

This one is not unabridged

Any additional comments?

I was hoping to have Proust's seven books unabridged, but they're in fact abridged. Big disappointment. Audible should fix this information.

bella lectura

Title: The Death of Ivan Ilych

Language: English

Release date: 11-14-07

Publisher: Jimcin Recordings

Publisher's Summary:

The Death of Ivan Illyich is a small book with singular depth of insight and is considered to be one of the great explorations of death and dying in all of Western literature. No author in so few words summons so many emotions.

Critic Reviews:

"Admirably read with a controlled and unsentimental voice that is perfect for this story....Tolstoy's striking word pictures and atmosphere are starkly delivered with an incredible match of voice and style that maximized their devastating effect." (Booklist)

Members Reviews:

Great quality without great quantity

Looking for something worth listening to but with a running time less than a work day? Well, here you go. Listen to it instead of watching a movie one night.

Given the brevity of the work, the characterization and plot development are indubitably remarkable... Well I'm getting bored.

Look, do you like Tolstoy? Fine, then I think you'll like this. Do you not know if you'll like Tolstoy? Perhaps this, being much easier to finish, is a better litmus than one of his more epic-length works.

Vivid!

Tolstoy opens the wall to a world we're taught to avoid. He held me there!

POWER-HOUSE OF RUSSIAN LIT.

Dont let the small size of this book fool you, this is a masterpiece! Highly recommended!

A simple, compelling story

A sad bureaucrat wastes his life, dreads and then accepts his death.

I rated the performance as 1 star not because of the narrator (who gave a fine reading), but because the quality of the sound was abysmal - muddy, and with fluctuations in volume. The latter chapters seemed to be contaminated with another track recorded at low volume, as though there was another story being whispered in the background.

A Must Hear !

Great literature reaches in grabs your heart and changes you. This amazing book will do that each time you listen. Beyond the "stars"!
