Title: The Lady of the Camellias

    Narrator: Charlton Griffin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-20-07
    Publisher: Audio Connoisseur
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 34 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The story begins when the narrator, Armand Duval, tells how he met the beautiful young temptress at a theatrical performance. With determination Armand pursues the flirtatious Marguerite and manages to capture her heart...with tragic consequences for both.
Alexandre Dumas explores the twisted logic of two diametrically opposed lifestyles brought together in love, the impact on family and friends, and the internal stresses such an affair is bound to produce. With remarkable skill, Dumas takes us on a breathtaking tour of Paris at its sparkling height at the time of emperor Louis Napoleon.
When The Lady of the Camellias first appeared in 1847, it caused an immediate sensation. It went on to become one of the most popular French novels of all time. Almost immediately, it caught the eye of Giuseppe Verdi, who transformed this tragic love story into one of the most popular and famous operas ever written, La Traviata.
In the latter half of the century, The Lady of the Camellias took to the stage in a series of internationally successful productions. A stage version was being produced somewhere in the world almost continuously for over 50 years just prior to World War I. The book has also been adapted for film about 20 times, the most famous being Camille in the 1930s. Because of its timeless theme, La Dame aux Camélias will go right on capturing hearts for years to come. Settle back and let the story of Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval sweep you away!
    Critic Reviews:
"This is a very polished production, with music introducing and underscoring small sections of text. Charlton Griffin, a tried and true narrator, has a smooth baritone and such a clear understanding of the work that his interpretation is flawless." (The Boston Globe)

A Dumas in the age of de Balzac
Fine portrait of the characters and understanding of a courtesan and the men who keep her and the man who loves her. The view of Paris reminds me of the best of Honore de Balzac in "Pere Goriot." Clever plot, in the tradition of his father, but more judgmental about society's moral codes.
Original Version of Familiar Story Well Read
The book is compulsively readable, perhaps because the story???a young courtesan, redeemed by love, dying of consumption???is so familiar. I was really impressed with the narrator, Charlton Griffin. In fact, I almost cannot believe that he spoke the women's parts he was so convincing. I listen to a lot of audio books, and he is one of the best narrators I have ever heard.
Not the work of the Elder
His father's novels were much better.

    Wonderful classic.

"Johanna Ward brings suspense and wit to this story of intrigue set in the days following the French Revolution....She makes good use of her native British and superb French accents to help create vivid and complex personalities. Ward's great sense of mood and timing carry listeners through to the very end." (AudioFile)

    The difficult second album.......
I relisten to "The Scarlet Pimpernel" frequently but this isn't going to make it to the repeats list.
It lacks the humour and adventure of the original and spends too much time talking about how luuuuuuvly Blakeney is and how much she luuuuuuvs him and frankly it wears a bit thin after an hour or so. But maybe that's just me.
    Witty, funny and well read.
I loved this book. It had me giggling from beginning to end. The reading was perfect. All the names, all the accents, all the witty dialogue. Fantastic.
    Wonderful Sequel
The Scarlet Pimpernel is charming and intriguing historical fiction to rival the longer works of Dumas, and its sequel, The Elusive Pimpernel, lives up to the measure of the first novel. Good to see that I Will Repay, another in this series of books, is available. Would love to see more of Orczy and her Percy Blackeney novels.
    Bodice Ripping
Would you listen to The Elusive Pimpernel again? Why?
    Maybe not.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Margo
What about Johanna Wards performance did you like?
    timing
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
There is a lot of bodice ripping and hand ringing, but it's a good ride nonetheless.
Lots of jolly good fun and exciting intrigue.
    Any additional comments?
I have enjoyed both the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Elusive Pimpernel very much. The hero of the book kept me laughing all the time. His duplicity was very amusing and I listened eagerly for his each new encounter to see what he had to say, or what amazing way he would handle the next situation. Yes, it has intrigue, conflict, and adventure, but the dialogue is also fun and kept me engaged. The time it was written in posed no issues. There was nothing "lost in translation". A fun read.

    Critic Reviews:
"Johanna Ward is fun to listen to. She puts the author's rather melodramatic prose in the best possible light by reading with restraint, gravity, and authority." (AudioFile)

When Orczy is at her best...
she is a rival for Dumas, Shakespeare and the Greek playwrights. Here we have Electra, Hamlet, and the Count Of Monte Cristo all rolled up into a compelling little novel in the ongoing Percy Blackley/Scarlet Pimpernel series. Would love to see even more of Orzcy on Audible.
    Nice and short
Pretty good story and I enjoyed the narration although somewhat predictable, especially if you are familiar with other books by Baroness Orczy.
    More of a romance story
Where does I Will Repay rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This audiobook ranks highly for me because I am a Scarlet Pimpernel fan and have read all the books. It is very difficult to come across very many of these books in audiobook format. So this is rare.
What was one of the most memorable moments of I Will Repay?
I liked the scene where the Sir Blakeney (AKA the Scarlet Pimpernel) meets with Anne Mie who is of the household of Paul Déroulèdes is not very beautiful and is plainly jealous of Juliet, but Blakeney treats her with respect and tells her plainly what she asks to know. It shows what a great soul Sir Blakeney is and possibly one reason he has been risking his life to save people from the guillotine.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Juliet's father forces her to swear an oath before God that she will avenge her brother's death even though he died in a fair fight.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I usually listen to a little bit at a time while I am cooking, or doing things where I can play an audiobook and listen.
    Any additional comments?
If you are a Scarlet Pimpernel fan, you will find this book has some of the least Pimpernel scenes of any of the books. It focuses mostly on the romance between Juliet and Paul and betrayal, then remorse and love.
The story was Nnot as good as it should.
What did you like best about I Will Repay? What did you like least?
The story would have been much better if fleshed out, and as a standalone I hated the fact it is presented overall as a "Scarlet Pimpernel" novel. The character makes but a cameo, and Marguerite, where is Margyerite? Perhaps she is in disguise. Published about 100 years ago. Today we would call it a rip off due to it being labeled a Scarlet Pimpernel novel.
Would you be willing to try another book from Baroness Emma Orczy? Why or why not?
Have read other Orczy Scarlet Pimpernel novels and enjoyed them. Intend to read more.
What about Johanna Wards performance did you like?
Well done, about 20 years ago. Still the narration does add to the novel.
Did I Will Repay inspire you to do anything?
    Not really.
    Any additional comments?
Won't read it again, or recommend the book.

Title: The Hunchback of Notre Dame
    Author: Victor Hugo
    Narrator: Frederick Davidson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-21-06

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 136 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Set amid the riot, intrigue, and pageantry of medieval Paris, Victor Hugo's masterful tale of heroism and adventure has been a perennial favorite since its first publication in 1831. It is the story of Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of the Notre Dame Cathedral, who falls in love with the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda. When Esmeralda is condemned as a witch by Claude Frollo, the tormented archdeacon who lusts after her, Quasimodo attempts to save her; but his intentions are misunderstood. Written with a profound sense of tragic irony, Hugo's powerful historical romance remains one of the most thrilling stories of all time.

    Critic Reviews:
"What a beautiful thing Notre-Dame is!" (Gustave Flaubert)
    Members Reviews:
    Davidson was miscast
How did the narrator detract from the book?
This narrator got the tone of the book all wrong, which is, most likely, the fault of the director.
    Any additional comments?
I remember this being one of my very favorite books as a teen, and was very disappointed by the narration.
    Classic Beauty and the Beast
I enjoyed this book as it is one of the classics. Victor Hugo does not dissappoint. I suggest you get the cliff notes if you are unfamiliar with the story, so you keep track of the characters. If you like lots of dialogue and character interaction then this is not your book as it is more the narrator role.
    One of my favorites!
What other book might you compare The Hunchback of Notre Dame to and why?
The book stands alone. Obviously Victor Hugo is a masterful writer, and with Hunchback, he wrote a masterpiece. The characters are complex. The story is compelling. If you think you know the story from the Disney movie or some other Hollywood version, trust me, in no way can any movie capture the depth of these characters and this story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
If I had to pick my favorite chapter from all the audio books I have ever listened to, it is a chapter from this book.
I walk while I listen. My walks take about an hour. One fine fall day I set out listening to a chapter called "A Bird's Eye View of Paris." It was purely descriptive, the kind of chapter I may skim if I were reading a hard copy of the book -- but that's not an option with an audio book. I walked, listening, as Hugo described the different burgs of Paris, the streets of Paris, the homes, the buildings, the churches. Quite frankly, 45 minutes into the walk and the chapter, I was getting a little tired of description.
But then, the glorious conclusion. Having built a city of stone with words in my imagination, he began the chiming of the bells in all the steeples across the whole city -- small bells, medium size bells, and huge grand bells of Notre Dame. Hugo describes as "a tumult of bells and chimes," "a furnace of music," and a symphony.
I heard a symphony in a audio-book and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.
    Fantastic Story, Poor Narrator
Instantly a favourite classic, but this narrator's voices were weak and his phrasing often felt wrong. Every voice sounded like someone hoarse from yelling differing only in frequency, and his Esmeralda sounded like someone mocking a scared girl, even during her most impassioned moments.
As for the story, it's obvious why it's a classic.

Title: The Metamorphosis and Other Stories

    Publisher's Summary:
The story has been interpreted as everything from religious allegory to psychoanalytic case history, but works because, though written nearly a century ago, Kafka's fantastic imaginings convey a reality of their own. We surrender to Gregor's experience, which in a way becomes ours.
Also included are stories by Guy de Maupassant: "The Englishman", "The Piece of String", "The Necklace", "A Crisis", "The Will", "Love", "The Inn" and "Was it a Dream".
    Translated by Stanley Appelbaum.
    Editorial Reviews:
Tom Whitworth delivers magnificent performances of work by Franz Kafka and Guy de Maupassant on this audiobook, The Metamorphosis and Other Stories. In the novella The Metamorphosis, protagonist Gregor Samsa wakes one morning to discover that he has transformed into a giant insect, putting tremendous pressure on his family. Whitworth is equally as compelling in his interpretations of de Maupassants short stories, which include: "The Englishman", "The Piece of String", "The Necklace", "A Crisis", "The Will", "Love", "The Inn", and "Was it a Dream?".

Check out 'Change' by Chris Selna
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This is an OK version. I've downloaded and listening to many versions of the Metamorphosis
What other book might you compare The Metamorphosis and Other Stories to and why?
Change by Chris Selna. Hysterical, heart breaking and shocking
Who can hate a classic? Or an accent!
What did you love best about The Metamorphosis and Other Stories?
The stories within this book are as strange as anything I've ever read (or rather, heard) in my life! However, reading from a higher-level philosophical standpoint, it is full of mind boggling depictions of human life and priorities which many short stories lack. Yet, it still is full of intrigue and plot, though one might have thought otherwise!
And, of course, Tom Whitworth's reading was wonderful! His voice is calm and deep and full of character and life! Plus, he's got a manly british accent, which is soothing to the ears.

    Title: The Cossacks
    Author: Leo Tolstoy
    Narrator: David Thorn
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-26-06
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the setting of what is present-day Kazakhstan, Tolstoy examines two psychological problems. The first dilemma is that of a young man who desires both fulfilling love and a place as a respected member of society. The other is the difficulty of a primitive society to accept domination by a higher culture that has no understanding of the traditions it asks its colonists to cast aside.
One of Tolstoy's lesser-known novels, The Cossacks is one of the finest pictures of Cossack society in all of Russian literature.
Translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude.

    Quick way to try Tolstoy
I can't agree with Chris above. Somebody has to translate Tolstoy into English or most of us in the US couldn't read his books. For example, I loved the Audible version of Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" but had a hard time following "The Brothers Karamazov." A professor friend of mine read a different translation and it's one of his favorites.
This book could be a quick way to see if you want to do "War and Peace".
    The Cockney Cossacks.
Why Blackstone Audiobooks' reader felt the need to anglicanize this title, employing ridiculous British accents to define the relative social classes of its Russian characters, is beyond this listener's understanding. Add to that the nauseating synthesizer interstitial music which separates the chapters and you end up with a patronizing Mary Poppins-esque Tolstoy indeed. Do not waste your money on this recording unless such esthetic "choices" appeal to you.
