Was ist passiert?

Narrateur: Victor Vestia

Format: Unabridged

Durée: 14 hrs and 53 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 06-16-17

Éditeur: Sonobook

Evaluation: 4 sur 5 sur 1 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Zola at his most poignant.

Ive read LŒuvre before some years back, but was prompted to revisit it after watching the excellent film Cézanne et moi. It is thoroughly despicable to use and distort the life of a childhood friend, as Zola has in this novel, but it is a very moving and engrossing book. (The Rougon-Macquart series has some masterpieces and some awful drivel!)

I wish more were available as audiobooks all the same - Pot-Bouille and L.Assommoir particularly.

As I get older, I dont have time to re-read, but an Audiobook can be enjoyed while doing other things.

The narrator does well, as he has before.

Title: The Death of Ivan Ilyich

Author: Leo Tolstoy

Narrator: David Shaw-Parker

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs and 44 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-21-17

Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Hailed as one of the world's supreme masterpieces on the subject of death and dying, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face to face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth? A thoroughly absorbing and, at times, terrifying glimpse into the abyss of death, it is also a strong testament to the possibility of finding spiritual salvation.

Best story ever written

Best story ever written. Allows life to be put in perspective. I've read this story several times over the years since my 20s.

Luminous

A tale of the end of life... seemingly so depressive and yet because of the genius of Tolstoy, the novella ends I,messed in light. A soul finding out about the truth of life... what's more wonderful?

classic

this is a very quick read, and good on many levels. he accurately describes the process of dying, as well as common reactions by the person and those around him. it can also be read much deeper, lots of symbolism

I highly recommend reading it

This book was the first sent to Prime Minister Steven Harper from Yann Martel. If you have not read Yann Martel's book on "101 Books to Prime Minister Steven Harper", I highly recommend reading it. I got "The Death of Ivan Illyich" in audio and it is great to walk and listen. Read Yann Martel's review of this book.

Very Authentic

Brilliantly captures the rage and impotence of a man confronted with his own mortality. This novella starts slowly but as the net begins to tighten around Ivan Ilych it becomes hard to put down. His bursts of irrational hope in the face of death are heart rending. His recognition that much of his adult life has been wasted chasing after status gives him a sense of nobility at a time when his dignity has been taken from him. In accompanying Ivan Ilych to the very edge of the abyss we look into our own future and see what awaits us there. This book feels very authentic and only a very hard heart would fail to be moved by its pathos

Title: Poor People

Author: Fyodor Dostoevsky

Narrator: Alastair Cameron

Format: Unabridged

Length: 5 hrs and 5 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-27-17

Publisher: A.R.N. Publications

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 12 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

This gloomy book is written in the form of letters exchanged between two cousins, Makar Devushkin and Varvara Dobroselova, who live on the same street in a shockingly deprived part of St. Petersburg Russia. Makar is a lowly clerk, who is being bullied at work and lives in the screened-off corner of someone else's kitchen and Varvara has taken in sewing as a means of avoiding falling into prostitution to make money. Their friendship is touching and sentimental, but it begins to suffer.

Will they find their way out of poverty, either by marriage or other means? Will their friendship recover, or will money eventually come between them?

This novel deals with themes of extreme poverty and marginalization, and was originally written to raise funds to pay off Dostoevsky's mounting gambling debts, when money was very much on his mind.

Abridged

The info says the book is not abridged, but it is. That's the only reason I'm giving 4 stars.

Enjoyable

It was a good story, well narrated, but the last few lines of several of the chapters were missing, including the final chapter, which was really annoying.
