    Tara's Bulba - Gogol
The story lives up to its lore: it is Homeric. It's worth your time to read it. You'll know a little more of the Ukraine, of the steppes, and of the Cossacks. You'll know a little more about Russian literature. If you're like me, you'll have poured thimblefuls into an abyss of ignorance. And have had fun pouring.

Great book! Comparable and compared by great authors and poets to be very near to and even an equivalent of the great epics of Homer, The Iliad and Odyssey. That is how good the book is! Great for understanding cossack life in Ukraine, but do your research so you can understand the actual history as it can be confusing when almost everything is called russian instead of ukrainian!
To be read with a swift gallop
The characters in Russian literature have never been known for being truth-seekers, but they are never passive and are always self-aware. They seem to always want to prove a point, and if they wrestle with circumstances it is only because they enjoy the challenges that such circumstances offer. Gogol's Taras Bulba is no exception to this generalization, and if he were judged by modern terminology he might be classified as a terrorist.

    Publisher's Summary:

    Zadig: A Masterpiece
Zadig is a well written story of about the wise man named Zadig. He has many characteristics that make him a perfect worldly man at its greatest. He is wise, justified, and well-read. By far my favorite part in this little masterpiece is when Zadig makes the fine decisions for the King such as when he helped the woman claim her baby. Zadig gets really great when Zadig helps the Widows by convincing them to not burn themselves. I felt the emotion when Zadig lost his beloved Queen when the king unjustly ordered Zadig executed for having an affair with the queen, which he did not. Overall Zadig is a wonderful story that I would suggest to read whether your interests include classics, fantasy, fast-paced, or slow-paced books. It can interesting to a person of any age. Zadig has a little place within me now and I hope this classic story of a man trying to be Just stays with me forever.

    Publisher's Summary:
The unknown masterpiece, or Le chef-d'œuvre inconnu, is a story by the French author Honoré de Balzac. This short text was of tremendous importance in the world of art, for it holds a groundbreaking reflection about artistic creation: what does completion or failure mean, and how is it that technique does not guarantee either.
Paul Cézanne famously said "I am Frenhofer", identifying with the old master around which the story revolves. Pablo Picasso himself was absolutely fascinated by the text, so much that he had his studio moved in the Parisian street named in the story; there, he painted his own masterpiece, Guernica.

An incisive critique of bourgeois vices
In the Enlightenment attempt to justify the institutions of bourgeois liberalism, one of the most glaring failures is the case of punishment. The Enlightenment can prove that a certain kind of peace is possible among those who accept its peculiar form of bourgeois reason. But the cruel treatment of dissenters who are either unable or unwilling to accept this sort of rationalityâfor this the Enlightenment has no justification. In a conversation with his bourgeois rival Albert, Werther brings up this unpaid debt of the Enlightenment. What should we say about a thief who steals to feed his starving children? Who would cast the first stone at him?
A man overcome with passion, says Albert, loses his senses, as if he were drunk or insane. Rational, reasonable bourgeois people like Albert designate the dissenter who refuses to accept their form of rationality as an outsider, who, because of his so-called irrationality is unworthy of sympathy. The cold-blooded cruelty of the bourgeois regime is rationalized by precisely such dehumanization of its victims.
The fundamental principle of the Enlightenment, as Kant would articulate it, is that each individual mind must overcome its self-imposed immaturity and learn to think without guidance from another. While the middle class of the eighteenth century were proud that the philosophical representatives of their age had overcome the superstitions of earlier ages and emerged from their state of self-imposed immaturity, individual bourgeois minds were by no means prepared to make this emergence themselves.
Werther is frustrated because he speaks âfrom his whole heart,â while Albert only replies with âmeaningless platitudes.â Albert canât be forced to think about who will cast the first stone at the poor thief, because public institutions, which feel no mercy, are perfectly willing to cast the stone on his behalf. Albert isnât forced to think. Therefore, he doesnât want to think. To this end, he has at his disposal many rough and ready phrases that can defuse such uncomfortable questions without demanding even the slightest glimmer of sincere thought. The bourgeois mind remains in its own peculiar state of self-imposed immaturity, in which phrases prepared in advance under the guidance of others can be assembled without guidance from others, but individual words cannot.
We might draw an analogy between Wertherâs frustrated attempts to draw Albert into a sincere debate about bourgeois morality and Socratesâ frustrated attempts to embroil his conversation partners in serious philosophical debates. Under no circumstance does Albert want to think for himself.

  • The Toilers of the Sea Audiobook by Victor Hugo

Title: The Toilers of the Sea
    Author: Victor Hugo
    Narrator: Patrick Dickson
    Format: Abridged
Length: 6 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-09-15
    Publisher: Patrick Dickson
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Victor Hugo wrote this wonderful story while living in exile on the island of Guernsey, which is where the adventure unfolds. Set in the early 1800s, The Toilers of the Sea tells off a young reclusive fisherman who falls dangerously in love with a beautiful island girl. Her uncle, himself an intrepid seafarer, is the owner of a paddle-steamer, which plies its trade to and from St. Malo on the coast of Brittany. The vessel is wrecked on a remote reef in suspicious circumstances, and our brave young fisherman sets out alone to salvage the all-important machinery, the steam engine itself. If he succeeds, he will return home to the promised hand of the girl he daren't even talk to.
Like his contemporary, Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo paints boldly on a huge canvas. His characters are compelling and colorful. Through them, he explores the values and the morality of his times. In this novel, he pits them not only against each other and their hard circumstances, but also against the elements themselves in the rough and rocky seas of the "Norman Archipelago".
Patrick Dickson has intelligently abridged this terrific novel focusing on the drama of the adventure and the plight of its characters. Like Hugo, he spent 15 years of his life on the island of Guernsey, and he brings a unique sensibility to the storytelling. He is an actor with extensive narrating experience. This is his first self-produced audiobook.

Interesting, could without the special effects
I listened to this just after Les Miserables. I was curious to read another of Victor Hugo's writings. It was interesting. The added music and sound effects were distracting, and are totally unnecessary. Avid audio book listeners do not need these. But, I'm glad to have read the book.
Fantastic listening on sea side holiday
I've always wanted to listen to this book but have never found a well read version. This one however is perfect! Read by a true Guernsey man with a smattering of sound effects that really immerse you into the story. I listened to this whilst on holiday next to the sea in Cornwall and it was the perfect companion.
    Dramatic story
If you could sum up The Toilers of the Sea in three words, what would they be?
    Gripping, entertaining, Guernsey
Who was your favorite character and why?
Gilliatt, the hero, for his determination and generosity.
Have you listened to any of Patrick Dicksons other performances? How does this one compare?
    This is the first
    Any additional comments?
Anyone who knows and loves Guernsey should listen to this.

    Evaluation: 4.5 sur 5 sur 2 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
Enfin, pourrait on dire!

    It seems biased
It seems that the author has too much negativity to say about monarchy in Russia. I don't think I heard anything positive about any of the tzars. Peter I appeared as a stranger to me in this book. Also it seems like author is not familiar with life is soviet times and how much damage revolution has brought to Russia, how much gold and treasure was stolen and sold. The author describes monarchy Russia in a very negative way.
