    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 18 mins

    Publisher's Summary:
On 25 May 1982, at a critical juncture in the Falklands War, the destroyer HMS Coventry was attacked by Argentinean aircraft. In a devastating strike, she was hit by three bombs, two of which exploded inside her hull, killing 19 of her crew and leaving many others badly injured. Within minutes Coventry had capsized, and would finally sink the following day. It was the first occasion since the Second World War that a British captain and crew had to abandon a stricken ship. This is the highly personal, often harrowing story of Coventrys war told by her captain.

A good account but lacking depth
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Only if interested in the story of Coventry.
It's a good account but lacks any depth/guts/passion.
The author expends as many words detailing his family history and correspondence home than the actual naval war.
What three words best describe Paul Blakes performance?
Long winded, could have abbreviated some of the English. All of the have nots and did nots and everything else i can think of are all read out explicitly which seem endless and do nothing to help the flow of the narrative
Was Four Weeks in May worth the listening time?
    Yes

A group of U.S. soldiers emailed their observations and experiences from Iraq and their candid opinions on fighting an insurgency. This book is the result. This startling collection of emails is a thoughtful and compelling narrative that carries the reader from the alleys and city streets to the homes of long-suffering Iraqis, and from the soldiers concrete bunkers to the majestic army base. Along the way, the reader is asked to consider the puzzles posed for a disciplined army engaged with an enemy that hides amid - and indeed, targets - a civilian population.
    Editorial Reviews:
Written collectively by a group of enlisted airborne infantry men under the pseudonym J. B. Walker Nightcap at Dawn details the counterinsurgency in Iraq through an assemblage of these soldiers' real notes on their lives. Jokingly conceived as an account of "the simple charms of soldiering", what results is a firsthand account of the reality of Iraq through the veil of "experiences, expressions, imaginations, and hallucinations". Armando Durans unflinching performance of these mens words is an important glimpse into the grit and confusion of the counterinsurgency and its otherworldly battlefields, encounters with local peoples, intense complexities of daily life, and the reflections of the soldiers living it.

this is the sort of book that will lay out the harsh realities of following ROEs too closely and how a citizen-centric focus is
This is the kind of book that is hard to put down; the author truly immerses you in the life of an Army grunt deployed to Iraq having to fight an uphill battle in a way not envisioned.
If you are hoping to understand how complicated COIN is, this is the sort of book that will lay out the harsh realities of following ROEs too closely and how a citizen-centric focus is sometimes best for winning over the locals and undermining the support of insurgent groups.
Finally, many of you will love how the author employs imagery and symbolism, referring to insurgents as "rattlesnakes" among many other terms to visualize the battlespace "Walker" and his men encountered on the streets of Iraq.
    Counterinsurgency Details
This is a creative non-fiction writing about the counter-insurgency avenues that should have been pursued by those in command during the Baghdad surge. Excellent writing by the enlisted soldiers serving day by night by day in their efforts to win tribal hearts against jihadi terrorism provides detailed accounts of their efforts to stay alive while offering assistance to Iraqi mothers, fathers and their children.
realistic, insightful, makes the war real
These men and women who are sent to fight a war that isn't theirs are REAL people. I couldn't help but admire them and wonder at their steadfastness to do be good soldiers in spite the difficulties inherent in fighting a counter insurgency war. I wish them the best and thank them for their service.

    Publisher's Summary:
In recent years, Pakistan has changed from being a state of regional strategic significance to one of major global importance. Its geographical position and delicate religious mix, coupled with a complex political structure and its status as a nuclear power, have ensured that its actions - and inactions - have attracted close scrutiny since 9/11 and the declaration of the "War on Terror". Yet there remains widespread disagreement among political and military analysts as to the real position of this enigmatic nation.
In War, Coups, and Terror, Brian Cloughley explores the underbelly of Pakistan's military and its controversial role within the Pakistani government since Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto came to power in 1971. An insider with links to Pakistan's past and present senior officers, Cloughley provides a unique insight into the Army's influence and position as a force in the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban, as well as an account of operations against the 2003-2004 tribal uprising. His coverage of military-political relations will fascinate those who seek a closer understanding of this enigmatic and complex country, its ambitions, affiliations, and loyalties.
    Editorial Reviews:
A veteran of both the British and Australian armies with ties to senior members of the Pakistani military, Brian Coughley provides a unique insight into the controversial role the Army has played within the government since Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's rise to power in 1971. Fleet Cooper is assertive yet unassuming when need be, allowing Coughley's intensive research to take prominence. War, Coups, and Terror is an in-depth, insider look at the mix of religion, politics, and military influence in the history of this complicated nation.

    Publisher's Summary:
Welcome to a place where even beer runs are a matter of life and death. As the Iraq War draws to an official close, Joshuah Bearman tells the funny and poignant tale of the real-life Baghdad Country Club, a bar in the Green Zone during the conflict's bloodiest years. Against all odds, its proprietors struggle to keep their raucous watering hole safe and well-stocked as the insurgency rages outside.
    Members Reviews:
Welcome to the BCC, your place to shut out the world
As Hawkeye Pierce wrote home from Korea "the fighting goes on, the hatred, the violence, the senseless brutality, men behaving like animals - and then there's the war."
The grunts from M*A*S*H would have felt right at home hanging out in the Baghdad Country Club, a small rump of a bar that flourished briefly in the heart of the Iraqi Capital's Green Zone, a refuge inside a walled refuge during the Iraq conflict.
Joshuah Bearman tells the story of the BCC, an alcohol and testosterone-fuelled haven where songs by the band "Men at Work" were pulled from the jukebox after a pack of blotto Aussies went nuts hearing "Down Under" blasting over the PA.
It's also the story of James (first name only for security reasons), the former British Army paratrooper now a war zone contractor, who was the counter-culture visionary who opened the club in the middle of an insurgency at the peak of the war where liquor is prohibited by Iraqi General order No. 1. Just try to imagine the struggles involved in opening in bombed-out Baghdad a reliable supply line for food and alcohol.
Describing James is to talk about what it means to be an entrepreneur. He's the type of guy whose inclination "was to figure out what no one else was doing and make that your game." James had his own sidekick, Ajax, a former Iraqi translator, a chain smoking wiry little fixer who "knew lots of guys" and was trusted by almost everyone.
The Baghdad Country Club opened its doors in August 2006. A pattern of harassment by military and civilian authorities began in 2007. Finally, Green Zone police along with the FBI descended and raided the establishment.
The raid was something even Ajax couldn't fix. Some people connected with the place were given 24 hours to leave the country. We aren't told how long the BCC had remained in business. But you sense it flourished briefly and flared out quickly.
James says that inside the BCC within the Green Zone in the heart of Baghdad there was always a siege mentality. People came together to relax and take comfort. For a brief few months, it was the only place where people could shut out the world.
The BCC's story is a matter-of-fact account considering the time and place. It presents a view of war from a new angle. The story succeeds, for me anyway, by portraying what everyday life was like for short while in a fortified enclave in a war zone.
    [3.5 stars]
War? What War? Baghdaddy Beer Drinking Club
As the Iraq invasion settled and the US and Coalition forces settled for the transition to a smooth democracy, Bearman lays out this foaming frothy lie of the war and instead we se we see a military campaign and country with no plan and no way forward. As Americans and Iraqis are dying just outside the tall concrete walls of the Green Zone, the mixed groups of Coalition, US and others are inside the drinking to their hearts delight as the war rages outside.

Operation Chariot - "the greatest raid of all": the British amphibious attack on the Normandy dry dock at St Nazaire in German-occupied France. Raiders World War Two True Stories.
Where does Raiders: World War Two True Stories rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
First of all I would like to say this is a book about British special forces of world war two. I enjoyed that. Having said that these are stories that you probably have not heard of before. I really enjoyed it, and I would recommend it to anyone.
A must listen for WW 2 history fans!
What made the experience of listening to Raiders: World War Two True Stories the most enjoyable?
I love tales of bravery, sacrifice, and ingenuity from the men and women of that generation who gave all for freedom and love of country. These six, individual stories were excellent listening, with top flight narration by Mark Meadows. Britain and the Allies had only had a series of setbacks and depressing news, while trying to cope with the constant Lufwaffe attacks on the Homefront for more than two years and Churchill knew some positive news stories were critical by this time. The establishment and training of the "Commandos" is a great story in itself, but as Mark Meadows reads them, you feel you are there with the attaking forces! The initial success of the Raids was a much needed moral booster for England, and set some standards for D Day which would follow. I purchased this audiobook in January, and have listened to it three times already, loving every minute of it. First class all the way.
What other book might you compare Raiders: World War Two True Stories to and why?
Anyone that likes these types of stories would enjoy any of William Breuers' books;and also, 'The Brenner Assaignment' by Patrick O'Donnell; "The Forgotten 500 " by Gregory Freeman;'The Jedburghs' by Will Irwin and "The Phantom Major"@ by Virginia Cowles,to name a few.(@-Reviewed separately).
What does Mark Meadows bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I listen very carefully to books I place in my wish list and take my time deciding. Sometimes favourite subject matter is not as well narrated as I would like, and the VOICE is everyting to me. I place Mr. Meadows up there with the best, especially for this genre.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It actually did give me chills,as some of the Commandos;as was to be expected, lost there lives in the Raids.

    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
An absolutely harrowing first-person account of the 94th Infantry Division's bold campaign to break through Hitler's "impregnable" Siegfried line at the end of World War II.
Eighteen-year-old William Foley was afraid the war would be over before he got there, but the rifleman was sent straight to the front lines, arriving January 25, 1945 - just in time to join the 94th Infantry Division poised at Hitler's legendary West Wall. By the time Foley finally managed to grab a few hours sleep three nights later, he'd already fought in a bloody attack that left 60 percent of his battalion dead or wounded. That was just the beginning of one of the toughest, bloodiest challenges the 94th would ever face: breaking through the Siegfried Line. Now, in Visions from a Foxhole, Foley recaptures that desperate, nerve-shattering struggle in all its horror and heroism.
    Members Reviews:
William Foley has done us all a great service by telling his story
William Foley has done us all a great service by telling his story. If you want to know what life was like living (and dying) on the front lines in WWII when the Germans were throwing everything they had left at a last ditch effort to stop us at the border to the "fatherland", then this tells it well. Until I read William's account I never understand what our soldiers had to endure on the front lines. Now I know at least a little
A literal insight to a well told story
There are many well told first person accounts of what life, and death, was like for the U.S. WWII American soldier. This is one of them. Foley's story doesn't get bogged down in pre-war civilian life, nor does it spin its wheels in pre-combat garrison life. The reader gets into hellish combat quickly. The added bonus to Foley's tale is that he was a talented illustrator during the war and he captured pencil images of an experience usually relegated to the reader's imagination. My only complaint is that these amazing drawings should have been dispersed throughout the book with the corresponding experience and not at the end in gallery form. It's like having a fine meal with great wine, you don't want the merlot at the end of your dinner! But don't let that minor complaint stop you from buying this read. It's well written and worth it.
An amazing hero. My only issue was that the author ...
Book is very well written and the author kept my attention throughout the Chapters and the different battles that unfolded. An amazing hero.
My only issue was that the author mentions that the soldiers were unaware and not responsible for Hitler's actions.
Hitler's was elected by the German people and he made his intentions very clear before and after he was elected.
I wouldn't call the German army blameless for Hitler's actions.
Foley has done a great service
Much, if not all, of what
    William Foley says about his
    WWII ETO experience has the
    complete ring of truth.
As you talk to various 80 year olds about their WWII combat experiences you soon learn the fluid nature of these rapidly changing combat events. Many times it is hard to see or hear anything beyond a hundred yards.
From what I hear from my father, who was severely wounded in ETO WWII infantry combat, is that war isn't glorious, but ugly, brutal, hateful assembly line murder.

  • The Hill Fights Audiobook by Edward F. Murphy

    Title: The Hill Fights
Subtitle: The First Battle of Khe Sanh
    Author: Edward F. Murphy
    Narrator: Charles Stransky
    Format: Abridged
Length: 2 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-10-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
While the 77-day siege of Khe Sanh in early 1968 remains one of the most highly publicized clashes of the Vietnam War, scant attention has been paid to the first battle of Khe Sanh, also known as "the Hill Fights". Although this harrowing combat in the spring of 1967 provided a grisly preview of the carnage to come at Khe Sanh, few are aware of the significance of the battles, or even their existence. For more than 30 years, virtually the only people who knew about the Hill Fights were the Marines who fought them.
Now, for the first time, the full story has been pieced together by acclaimed Vietnam War historian Edward F. Murphy, whose definitive analysis admirably fills this significant gap in Vietnam War literature. Based on first-hand interviews and documentary research, Murphy's deeply informed narrative history is the only complete account of the battles, their origins, and their aftermath.
The Marines at the isolated Khe Sanh Combat Base were tasked with monitoring the strategically vital Ho Chi Minh trail as it wound through the jungles in nearby Laos. Dominated by high hills on all sides, the combat base had to be screened on foot by the Marine infantrymen while crack, battle-hardened NVA units roamed at will through the high grass and set up elaborate defenses on steep, sun-baked overlooks.
Murphy traces the bitter account of the U.S. Marines at Khe Sanh from the outset in 1966, revealing misguided decisions and strategies from above, and capturing the chain of hill battles in stark detail. But the Marines themselves supply the real grist of the story; it is their recollections that vividly re-create the atmosphere of desperation, bravery, and relentless horror that characterized their combat. Often outnumbered and outgunned by a hidden enemy - and with buddies lying dead or wounded beside them - these brave young Americans fought on.
The story of the Marines at Khe Sanh in early 1967 is a microcosm of the Corps' entire Vietnam War and goes a long way toward explaining why their casualties in Vietnam exceeded, on a Marine-in-combat basis, even the tremendous losses the Leathernecks sustained during their ferocious Pacific island battles of World War II.
The Hill Fights is a damning indictment of those responsible for the lives of these heroic Marines. Ultimately, the high command failed them, their tactics failed them, and their rifles failed them.
Only the Marines themselves did not fail. Under fire, trapped in a hell of sudden death meted out by unseen enemies, they fought impossible odds with awesome courage and uncommon valor.

I'm an avid fan of military history, but this book didn't impress. The underlying story is actually quite compelling: the first test of two very different tactical styles against one another. The execution of this story, however, was lacking in several fundamentals.
First, in this story, space and spatial relationships are important - the shape and slope of various ridge lines, the narrowness of a particular jungle path, etc.

Military working dogs gained widespread attention after Cairo participated in the SEAL Team 6 mission that led to Osama bin Laden's death. Before that, few civilians realized that dogs served in combat, let alone that they could parachute from thirty thousand feet up.
The Dogs of War reveals the amazing range of jobs that our four-legged soldiers now perform, examines the dogs' training and equipment, and sets the record straight on those rumors of titanium teeth. You'll find heartwarming stories of the deep bond that dogs and their handlers share with each other, and learn how soldiers and civilians can help the cause by fostering puppies or adopting retirees.
An incredible story of the largely unseen but vital role that dogs play in our armed forces, The Dogs of War is a must-listen for animal lovers everywhere.

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 23 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
The fate of the USS Flier is one of the most astonishing stories of the Second World War. On August 13, 1944, the submarine struck a mine and sank to the bottom of the Sulu Sea in less than one minute, leaving only 14 of its crew of 86 hands alive. After enduring 18 hours in the water, eight remaining survivors swam to a remote island controlled by the Japanese. Deep behind enemy lines and without food or drinking water, the crewmen realized that their struggle for survival had just begun.
On its first war patrol, the unlucky Flier made it from Pearl Harbor to Midway where it ran aground on a reef. After extensive repairs and a formal military inquiry, the Flier set out once again, this time completing a distinguished patrol from Pearl Harbor to Fremantle, Western Australia.
Though the Flier's next mission would be its final one, that mission is important for several reasons: the story of the Flier's sinking illuminates the nature of World War II underwater warfare and naval protocol and demonstrates the high degree of cooperation that existed among submariners, coast watchers, and guerrillas in the Philippines. The eight sailors who survived the disaster became the first Americans of the Pacific war to escape from a sunken submarine and return safely to the United States. Their story of persistence and survival has all the elements of a classic World War II tale: sudden disaster, physical deprivation, a ruthless enemy, and a dramatic escape from behind enemy lines.
In The USS Flier: Death and Survival on a World War II Submarine, noted historian Michael Sturma vividly recounts a harrowing story of brave men who lived to return to the service of their country.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sturma tells an engrossing story of courage, suffering and survival." (Kirkus Reviews)
"I highly recommend this work to naval history scholars and to those who are interested in learning more about the intricacies of how modern navies actually work." (World War II Quarterly)
"A great read. . . . The author carefully examines the sub's all-too-short service and the fate of her survivors." (Proceedings of the US Naval Institute)

5 August 2005. While conducting a secret mission thirty miles off the remote cost of Kamchatka, the Russian Navy submarine AS-28 became snared in the thick cables anchored to 60-tonne concrete blocks. Without power the stricken boat sunk to the seafloor. Trapped too deep to escape her crew now had just seventy two hours before the air onboard ran out. Twenty-four hours later - still haunted by the loss of the Kursk - the Russian Navy requested assistance. And on their side of the world, Commander Ian Riches, Boss of the Royal Navy's Submarine rescue team got the call: there was a sub down. With their expertise and specialist equipment, he knew his team had a chance to save the men, but Kamchatka was at the very limit of their range. And the clock was ticking.
72 Hours tells the story of an extraordinary, edge-of-the-seat real-life drama. It's the gripping, inside story of one of the most dramatic rescue attempts of recent years.
