    Title: In an Unspoken Voice
Subtitle: How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness
Author: Peter A. Levine Ph.D., Gabor Mate - foreword M.D.
    Narrator: Ed Nash
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-28-17
    Publisher: North Atlantic Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Unraveling trauma in the body, brain, and mind - a revolution in treatment.
In this culmination of his life's work, Peter A. Levine draws on his broad experience as a clinician, a student of comparative brain research, a stress scientist, and a keen observer of the naturalistic animal world to explain the nature and transformation of trauma in the body, brain, and psyche. In an Unspoken Voice is based on the idea that trauma is neither a disease nor a disorder but rather an injury caused by fright, helplessness, and loss that can be healed by engaging our innate capacity to self-regulate high states of arousal and intense emotions. Enriched with a coherent theoretical framework and compelling case examples, the book elegantly blends the latest findings in biology, neuroscience, and body-oriented psychotherapy to show that when we bring together animal instinct and reason, we can become more whole human beings.
    Critic Reviews:
    "
In An Unspoken Voice uses the author's experiences as a clinician and a student of comparative brain research to explore the nature and impact of trauma on the body and brain.... Case study examples blend biology and body-oriented psychotherapy in a fine collection of insights highly recommended for college-level psychotherapy holdings." (
    Midwest Book Review)
"With this book Peter Levine secures his position in the forefront of trauma healing, as theorist, practitioner, and teacher. All of us in the therapeutic community - physicians, psychologists, therapists, aspiring healers, interested laypeople - are ever so much richer for this summation of what he himself has learned." (Gabor Maté, MD, author of

Ed Nash shouldn't be reading audio books
...and who ever directed this reading was out to lunch at the very least. What a mess!
Viscera. Say it: viscera, emphasis on the vis. This word is used almost every page in this book and he never figures out how to say it. And viscera is not the only bizarre mispronunciation.
Then there is punctuation. Mostly ignored. Headings? Just run them into the next sentence. Comas? Ignore or treat as periods.
I will never buy another book read by Ed. Ed need to find another line of work. He almost manages to ruin this otherwise brilliant book. There were a few sentences where he did so much creative pronunciation that I wasn't sure it was English.
    Beyond Exceptional
I'm now reading every single book that Levine has published. The Body Keeps Score is still my favorite book of all time, but I think that Levine's books (at least those I've read so far) and absolutely incredible. These should be required reading for everyone.

    Title: The Influential Mind
Subtitle: What the Brain Reveals About Our Power to Change Others

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 49 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
A cutting-edge, research-based inquiry into how we influence those around us and how understanding the brain can help us change minds for the better.
In The Influential Mind, neuroscientist Tali Sharot takes us on a thrilling exploration of the nature of influence. We all have a duty to affect others - from the classroom to the boardroom to social media. But how skilled are we at this role, and can we become better? It turns out that many of our instincts - from relying on facts and figures to shape opinions, to insisting others are wrong or attempting to exert control - are ineffective because they are incompatible with how people's minds operate. Sharot shows us how to avoid these pitfalls and how an attempt to change beliefs and actions is successful when it is well matched with the core elements that govern the human brain.
Sharot reveals the critical role of emotion in influence, the weakness of data, and the power of curiosity. Relying on the latest research in neuroscience, behavioral economics, and psychology, the audiobook provides fascinating insight into the complex power of influence, good and bad.

    Extremely helpful
Terrific insight-to-weight ratio. Considering buying print copy to use as a reference. Very highly recommended.
    Great perspective
Great book provides a new perspective on human interactions. A must read for anyone who deals with people daily
    Keen Perspective of the Mind
This book is that an enjoyable perspective on how people think. It combines science, self-help and communications to explain how we influence one another.
Narrator talks too fast -- tried .75x speed
I don't know if I like this book or not. The narrator talks too fast. I'm finishing processing sentence one while she's starting sentence three. I tried the slower speed, which is fine for occasional listening issues, but for a whole book, the intonation that the slower speed gives the narrator is insufferable (that isn't her fault, obviously).
    Anyway, I gave up.
    Disappointing
I have enjoyed books about social science in the past and hoped this would be an enlightening listen. This book only has a few points to make and lots of space to make them in. None of the authors points were particularly surprising or counterintuitive. I'm always hoping to get a few nuggets from books like this to stimulate conversation but I really struck out with this one. I also didn't care for the reader. This is partially my own fault, as I am fully aware of my tendency to not care for women readers. The sample I listened to made me hopeful about this reader but I was disappointed. I really enjoyed "the wisdom of crowds" and "the science of fear"and "the progress paradox" So check out any one of those if you're interested in a social science book.

This program is read by the author.
It's time to move "doing nothing" to the top of your to-do list.
In 2015 Manoush Zomorodi, host of WNYC's popular podcast and radio show Note to Self, led tens of thousands of listeners through an experiment to help them unplug from their devices, get bored, jump-start their creativity, and change their lives. Bored and Brilliant builds on that experiment to show us how to rethink our gadget use to live better and smarter in this new digital ecosystem. In this fascinating new audiobook, Manoush explains the connection between boredom and original thinking, exploring how we can harness boredom's hidden benefits to become our most productive and creative selves, without totally abandoning our gadgets in the process.
Grounding her arguments in the neuroscience and cognitive psychology of "mind wandering" - what our brains do when we're doing nothing at all - Manoush includes practical steps you can take to ease the nonstop busyness and enhance your ability to dream, wonder, and gain clarity in your work and life. The outcome is mind-blowing.

Bored and Brilliant shows the fascinating side of boredom. Manoush Zomorodi investigates cutting-edge research as well as compelling (and often funny) real-life examples to demonstrate that boredom is actually a crucial tool for making our lives happier, more productive, and more creative. What's more, the book is crammed with practical exercises for anyone who wants to reclaim the power of spacing out - deleting the Two Dots app, for instance, or having a photo-free day, or taking a 'fakecation'." Bringing Back "Spacing Out"
We're such a doing, doing, doing world. When I stand on a line at our local bagel shop or I'm waiting for a flight in an airport, I look around and notice that so few people are just waiting anymore. Most are looking so busy and important on their mobile devices. It's almost illegal to just wait patiently. It kind of reminds me of when I worked retail a thousand years ago and it was important to my supervisor that I look "busy" so I would fold and unfold the same sweater just to appear to be working.
What I love about this book is that I am given permission to space out, chill, enjoy just people watching, even hope that the next person in line will want to strike up a conversation with me. I was feeling guilty just spacing out not "doing" anything. The mobile device is like a little fence built around each individual. With a keep out sign. Imagination is back in vogue.

A mind-expanding, deeply humane tour of language(s) - and those who speak, study and invent them - by the best-selling author of Born on a Blue Day and Thinking in Numbers.
Is vocabulary destiny? Why do clocks 'talk' to the Nahua people of Mexico? Will AI researchers ever produce true human-machine dialogue? In this mesmerizing collection of essays, Daniel Tammet answers these and many other questions about the intricacy and profound power of language.
In Every Word Is a Bird We Teach to Sing, Tammet goes back in time to explore the numeric language of his autistic childhood; in Iceland he learns why the name Blr became a court case; in Canada he meets one of the world's most accomplished lip readers. He chats with chatbots, contrives an 'e'-less essay on lipograms, studies the grammar of the telephone, contemplates the significance of disappearing dialects and corresponds with native Esperanto speakers - in their mother tongue.
A joyous romp through the world of words, letters, stories and meanings, Every Word Is a Bird We Teach to Sing explores the way communication shapes reality. From the art of translation to the lyricism of sign language, these essays display the stunning range of Tammet's literary and polyglot talents.
    Critic Reviews:
"Full of charm and fascination...a veritable verbal treasure house." (The Bookseller)
    Members Reviews:
    Four Stars
Very interesting book, but a little high priced in my opinion.
    It's All In The Details
Daniel Tammetâs world is judgment-free. He observes and absorbs. He is fascinated by the tiny, and digs until he finds it. It blooms in his hands, taking on all kinds of attributes. He assigns connections and relationships to ever-smaller units of his observations. He delights in his manufactured cosmos of letters, numbers and colors. But there it ends.
He is an interesting character. In his first public speech, he recited the value of pi. To 22,000 places. From memory. Over a five hour period. His particular flavor of autism has given him great powers. But very little of this book is about him.
Every Word Is A Bird We Teach To Sing is a survey of interpersonal communications. There are chapters on telephone etiquette, the deaf, OuLiPo (fun exercises with words and letters) and various foreign languages. Tammet likes words and he has long chains of them (with translation) that he appreciates for their sound or their spelling or their power. So he is especially appreciative of poetry and its multipurposed words. He cites many snippets of poems, translating when necessary.
But it is just a survey. He draws no conclusions. He does not leverage or even connect. The endless chains of foreign words are totally forgettable. Everything he writes about is covered in far greater depth elsewhere. And it is all much less interesting than his own stories of adapting to society, for example, teaching English to Lithuanian women at the age of 19 - knowing no Lithuanian at all. So the best chapters are the first three â about him. The rest are linked in that he discusses means of interpersonal communication. But donât ask why, because he doesnât say.

  • Trauma and Memory Audiobook by Peter A. Levine, Bessel A. van der Kolk - foreword

    Title: Trauma and Memory
Subtitle: Brain and Body in a Search for the Living Past: A Practical Guide for Understanding and Working with Traumatic Memory
Author: Peter A. Levine, Bessel A. van der Kolk - foreword
    Narrator: Rick Adamson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-22-17
    Publisher: North Atlantic Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 28 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In Trauma and Memory, best-selling author Dr. Peter Levine (creator of the Somatic Experiencing approach) tackles one of the most difficult and controversial questions of PTSD/trauma therapy: Can we trust our memories? While some argue that traumatic memories are unreliable and not useful, others insist that we absolutely must rely on memory to make sense of past experience. Building on his 45 years of successful treatment of trauma and utilizing case studies from his own practice, Dr. Levine suggests that there are elements of truth in both camps. While acknowledging that memory can be trusted, he argues that the only truly useful memories are those that might initially seem to be the least reliable: memories stored in the body and not necessarily accessible by our conscious mind.
While much work has been done in the field of trauma studies to address "explicit" traumatic memories in the brain (such as intrusive thoughts or flashbacks), much less attention has been paid to how the body itself stores "implicit" memory and how much of what we think of as "memory" actually comes to us through our (often unconsciously accessed) felt sense. By learning how to better understand this complex interplay of past and present, brain and body, we can adjust our relationship to past trauma and move into a more balanced, relaxed state of being. Written for trauma sufferers as well as mental health care practitioners, Trauma and Memory is a groundbreaking look at how memory is constructed and how influential memories are on our present state of being.
    Critic Reviews:
"Memory has many layers, and Peter Levine has contributed his own unique and powerful way of thinking about how we can understand these systems and optimize their unfolding after trauma. This book offers clinical wisdom drawn from decades of direct experience, demonstrating how a clinician - with focused attention and essential timing - can move unresolved, non-integrated memories into a resolved, integrated form that enables a coherent narrative to emerge and the individual to become liberated from the prisons of the past." (Daniel J. Siegel, MD, author of Mindsight, The Mindful Therapist, and Pocket Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology)
"Only after we become capable of standing back, taking stock of ourselves, reducing the intensity of our sensations and emotions, and activating our inborn physical defensive reactions can we learn to modify our entrenched maladaptive automatic survival responses and, in doing so, put our haunting memories to rest." (Bessel A. van der Kolk, MD, author of The Body Keeps the Score: Mind, Brain and Body in the Healing of Trauma)

In light of the recent elections, I didnt like the political reference early on. Im a female working in a male dominated field and I am SO sick of hearing Hillary is a liar. We all lie and studies have shown lies increase when social acceptance is on the line. I dont think Dr.

Throughout the book, Nye draws on his own experiences - leavened with his trademark humor and self-deprecation - to show how he came to think like a Science Guy, and how you can, too. Advancing a model of treatment as transformation through relationship, the author integrates attachment theory with neuroscience, trauma studies, relational psychotherapy, and the psychology of mindfulness. Vivid case material illustrates how therapists can tailor interventions to fit the attachment needs of their patients, thus helping them to generate the internalized secure base for which their early relationships provided no foundation. Demonstrating the clinical uses of a focus on nonverbal interaction, the book describes powerful techniques for working with the emotional responses and bodily experiences of patient and therapist alike.

Useful with good use of case studies
Very useful with understanding the different explicit and implicit processes that take place during therapy, both for the client and therapist.
Helpful distinctions between the different attachment categories and good use of practical examples taken from his experience as a therapist to help strengthen the theory.
Quite dense in parts but then understandable as it's aimed at qualifed therapists. It was helpful to develop an understanding of the dynamics of therapy both for myself as a client and also as a trainee.
