    Recommend
As a therapist, I have recommended this book to my clients. It gives hope to people w BPD for ways to practice to lessen/end their suffering. This book gives real life examples from real people w BPD and how these techniques have worked for them. This is not a "quick fix". It takes practice and determination. It describes the techniques in a clear understandable manner. These techniques build upon each other. If you listen/read this book all the way thru, don't become overwhelmed. Remember it is a process that takes time and practice. I would recommend reading it thru one time, then come back and go thru and practice taking each chapter/techniques one at a time. Practice it till you feel comfortable before moving to the next chapter.
I listened to this book read by Laura Copland on my 30 min drive to work in the morning. She does an excellent job. Her voice has good variable pitch and rhythm. She reads at a good rate; not too fast and not too slow. She expresses emotion when needed but does not over do it. I've listened to previews of other books I would like to hear while driving but the reader's voice was monotone or their voice was too exaggerated. Laura Copland's voice kept my attention, but I was focused on the content and not her voice.
Essential for those who have BPD
Life changing. Everyone who even suspects BPD should read/hear this book. It's really essential.
    Helpful
Very practical, helpful information. Good for everyone not just those with BPD. I wish it had a different title as I'd like to recommend to others but worried that it may offend.
    Very interesting
I surprisingly enjoyed this. It combined elements of Buddhism to help those manage their Borderline Personality Disorder.
    i loved this book.
i recommend this book to anyone struggling with BPD. its very helpful. it does give lots of info on BP and teaches how to use mindfulness.

  • Payoff Audiobook by Dan Ariely

    Title: Payoff
Subtitle: The Hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations
    Author: Dan Ariely
    Narrator: Simon Jones
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-15-16
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio / TED
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 647 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Best-selling author Dan Ariely reveals fascinating new insights into motivation - showing that the subject is far more complex than we ever imagined.
Every day we work hard to motivate ourselves, the people we live with, the people who work for and do business with us. In this way much of what we do can be defined as being motivators. From the boardroom to the living room, our role as motivators is complex, and the more we try to motivate partners and children, friends and coworkers, the clearer it becomes that the story of motivation is far more intricate and fascinating than we've assumed.
Payoff investigates the true nature of motivation, our partial blindness to the way it works, and how we can bridge this gap. With studies that range from Intel to a kindergarten classroom, Ariely digs deep to find the root of motivation - how it works and how we can use this knowledge to approach important choices in our own lives. Along the way he explores intriguing questions such as: Can giving employees bonuses harm productivity? Why is trust so crucial for successful motivation? What are our misconceptions about how to value our work? How does your sense of your mortality impact your motivation?
    Members Reviews:
Love Ariely, but rehash of old stories
I'm a huge Dan Ariely fan. Unfortunately, he tells many of the same stories here that he always tells. I enjoyed, but not 100% for me.
A big fan of Dr Ariely!
I read all his books, and still I loved 'Payoff' very much! Some may said that this book is mix of his previous works, but its emphasis is much more focused on human motivations and his way of storytelling is extremely unique and enjoyable! Keep them coming Dr Ariely! Also, I LUV the narrator! He is just SO good......!
    Movtivation in simple terms
Motivation is one of those topics that can go in many directions. Dan does a great job of describing how our human nature reacts to various acts of "motivation".
    Excellent Tips on Motivating People
If you've read other books or seen TED Talks by Dan Ariely, much of the content is familiar. This is a short, concise book focused on motivation. I still enjoyed the book because it provided good anecdotes and research on motivation, and it's a good reminder to not do the wrong things that will demotivate people. For example, cash isn't effective at motivating people long term. It may work once or twice, but they come to expect it and productivity actually declines below the level prior to the cash rewards. Ignoring and dismissing people's work (such as canceling a project) are motivation killers. Authentic appreciation of people's work is a good motivator. The list goes on and on.
Great insights into what motivates and demotivates
It is rather astonishing that despite all the progress we as humans made, there is still a lot to learn about the mind.
Nevertheless, this book provides great insights into what motivates and demotivates people.
Note about after death: as a Muslim, I do not care about how people remember me, as long as I do good and go to heaven.
I sure hope we all go to heaven :)

The brain is an astounding organ, and today neuroscientists have more insights than ever about how it works - as well as strategies for helping us live better every day. These 24 practical lectures give you a wealth of useful strategies for improving your well-being. By presenting evidence-based "hacks" for your brain, Professor Vishton empowers you to take charge of your life and perform better all around.
Want to curb a few bad habits? Try making a notebook entry every time you perform the habit. Have a big project and feel the urge to procrastinate? Do nothing for 20 minutes and you'll feel ready to get to work. Come down with a case of the blues? Eat some fermented foods such as yogurt or sourdough bread.
From the myth of multitasking to the mechanisms behind falling in love, Professor Vishton shows you what is happening inside your brain to examine why we behave the way we do. What you'll discover is that the subconscious guides much of our behavior, leading to a kind of autopilot when it comes to making important decisions. Whether we're distracted by too many tasks, being influenced by crafty marketers, or simply living in a rut of bad habits, our conscious brains aren't always guiding us toward the best actions.
Using evidence from classic psychological studies such as John Watson's behaviorism experiments or Stanley Milgram's obedience studies, as well as the latest in scientific brain research, Professor Vishton gives you insights into how the mind operates, why our subconscious is so often in control, and what we can do change our behaviors.
You'll learn how the imagination can be as powerful as physical practice, explore the subtle art of persuasion, unpack the keys to healthy living, delve into the psychology of anger and fear, and much more. 20 times longer than necessary
What would have made Outsmart Yourself: Brain-Based Strategies to a Better You better?
This is insanely trivial. A few examples of "how to outsmart your brain":
If you are afraid of fyling on a plane: RELAX (yes, that is the trick!).
If you want to learn new skills: Practice (who would have thought that!)
If you are stuck on a problem: Do something else (seriously - people pay money for this kind of research results?)
    But wait, it gets better:
If you feel depressed - just consider yourself to be a scientist who does a scientific research AND TAKE DRUGS (honestly, that's the tip! He's talking about Aspirin there - just take it to "brighten up your mood", like ... every day)
But wait - it STILL GETS BETTER:
If you feel stage fright - DRINK ALCOHOL!
I kid you not. "Researches have shown that a drink or two releaxes you". You have to read that one again to believe it.
That was about the moment when I stopped listening.

  • Suggestible You Audiobook by Erik Vance

    Title: Suggestible You
Subtitle: The Curious Science of Your Brains Ability to Deceive, Transform, and Heal
    Author: Erik Vance
    Narrator: Paul Michael Garcia
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-08-16
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 455 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
This riveting narrative explores the world of placebos, hypnosis, false memories, and neurology to reveal the groundbreaking science of our suggestible minds. Could the secrets to personal health lie within our own brains? Journalist Erik Vance explores the surprising ways our expectations and beliefs influence our bodily responses to pain, disease, and everyday events. Drawing on centuries of research and interviews with leading experts in the field, Vance takes us on a fascinating adventure from Harvard's research labs to a witch doctor's office in Catemaco, Mexico, to an alternative medicine school near Beijing (often called "China's Hogwarts"). Vance's firsthand dispatches will change the way you think - and feel.
Continuing the success of National Geographic's brain books and rounding out our pop science category, this book shows how expectations, beliefs, and self-deception can actively change our bodies and minds. Vance builds a case for our "internal pharmacy" - the very real chemical reactions our brains produce when we think we are experiencing pain or healing, actual or perceived. Supporting this idea is centuries of placebo research in a range of forms, from sugar pills to shock waves; studies of alternative medicine techniques heralded and condemned in different parts of the world (think crystals and chakras); and, most recently, major advances in brain mapping technology. Thanks to this technology, we're learning how we might leverage our suggestibility (or lack thereof) for personalized medicine, and Vance brings us to the front lines of such study.
    Members Reviews:
Overstates it's central premise but interesting
Overall it contains a lot of fascinating topics and covers relevant research in an engaging way. The issues crop up around the central concept of the book; the effectiveness of placebos. It basically oversells the idea and doesn't do more than a brief mention of alternative explanations, essentially amounting to a hand wave of information counter to the idea of powerful placebos.
Narration is fine for the most part, it just reads a little slow so for the first time ever I found myself ramping it up to 1.3 speed. That might be related to me not fully engaging in the material and being a little skeptical of its content.
Very interesting book, I have recommended to several others
It is rare that I write a review but this book deserves a good review.
Has changed the way I view many things like faith healers, supplements, hypnotism and placebos.
Great journey into the human mind and how memory meets expectation, suggestion and placebo.
Couldn't stop listening to it. I also see where a great many people who struggle with some of the problems listed as being very susceptible to placebo like addiction, depression, IBS, or even Parkinson's may really appreciate learning the truth about the drugs they are being given.
    Highly recommend.
Also, there is a great appendix that is a hypnotic induction to reduce pain during dental work! I'm going to cue it up next time I'm in the chair!
Is The Power Within Us? Well, Maybe...
Vance starts this book with the story of how he was cured of a deadly disease through his Christian Scientist background. A story of faith.

  • Waking the Tiger Audiobook by Peter A. Levine, Ann Frederick

    Title: Waking the Tiger
    Subtitle: Healing Trauma
Author: Peter A. Levine, Ann Frederick
    Narrator: Chris Sorensen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-04-16
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 161 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity. It asks and answers an intriguing question: Why are animals in the wild, though threatened routinely, rarely traumatized? By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma is revealed. Waking the Tiger normalizes the symptoms of trauma and the steps needed to heal them. People are often traumatized by seemingly ordinary experiences. The listener is taken on a guided tour of the subtle, yet powerful impulses that govern our responses to overwhelming life events. To do this, it employs a series of exercises that help us focus on bodily sensations. Through heightened awareness of these sensations trauma can be healed.

    essential book- worst narration ever!
How could the performance have been better?
I am in Peter Levine's 3 year program, and was so excited to see this was finally on audio.
Unfortunately, the narrator's voice is so monotonous, abrasive and scientific that it made this incredible & lively material unbearable! I don't understand why he was chosen to read it.
I do recommend this book to anyone even remotely interested, I believe it is a profound method of healing. At this point, I'll just recommend the hard copy.
Speed up playback for better listening experience
Would you listen to Waking the Tiger again? Why?
I have listened twice -- the information in this book is very helpful for understanding how traumatic experiences may lead to dissociation, as well as learning how to bring your body (and instincts) back into your every day awareness to facilitate emotional healing.
    Any additional comments?
Some of the other reviewers have indicated that they found the narration robotic and hard to listen to. I also found the narration problematic and struggled to continue listening to the book, until I tried adjusting the playback speed on my iphone app. I found that speeding it up to the 1.25x speed made listening to this audiobook much more enjoyable. If you're having trouble with the narrator, try listening at a higher speed before giving up on the book altogether.
Chris Sorensen is such a poor reader
This is a great book. I've read it before. But 10 minutes into the audio book I'm not sure I can go on. Sorensen seems to assume the material is dry, and adjusts his already bland reading style to match. The result is that a book that isn't dry feels like wading through a text book. I have listened to whole books read by Sorensen, and while I've never loved his performance, it has never been quite this bad. This will be the last Sorensen performance I ever listen to, if I can get through it at all. I'm boycotting him from now on.
As a student of Somatic Experiencing...
... this is a must read. I have personally and professionally experienced the benefits Peter Levine lays out in a clear and accessible manner. Do listen to it at 1.25 speed. It sounds 100% normal at that speed to this listener.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The counterintuitive approach to achieving your true potential, heralded by the Harvard Business Review as a groundbreaking idea of the year.
The path to personal and professional fulfillment is rarely straight. Ask anyone who has achieved his or her biggest goals or whose relationships thrive, and you'll hear stories of many unexpected detours along the way. What separates those who master these challenges and those who get derailed? The answer is agility - emotional agility.
Emotional agility is a revolutionary, science-based approach that allows us to navigate life's twists and turns with self-acceptance, clear-sightedness, and an open mind. Renowned psychologist Susan David developed this concept after studying emotions, happiness, and achievement for more than 20 years. She found that no matter how intelligent or creative people are or what type of personality they have, it is how they navigate their inner world - their thoughts, feelings, and self-talk - that ultimately determines how successful they will become.
The way we respond to these internal experiences drives our actions, careers, relationships, happiness, health - everything that matters in our lives. As humans we are all prone to common hooks - things like self-doubt, shame, sadness, fear, or anger - that can too easily steer us in the wrong direction. Emotionally agile people are not immune to stresses and setbacks. The key difference is that they know how to adapt, aligning their actions with their values and making small but powerful changes that lead to a lifetime of growth. Emotional agility is not about ignoring difficult emotions and thoughts; it's about holding them loosely, facing them courageously and compassionately, and then moving past them to bring the best of yourself forward.
Drawing on her deep research, decades of international consulting, and her own experience in overcoming adversity after losing her father at a young age, David shows how anyone can thrive in an uncertain world by becoming more emotionally agile.

    Publisher's Summary:
Stanley Milgram was a young researcher at Yale in the 1960s when he recruited volunteers to help in a psychology experiment. These volunteers were asked to give electric shocks to "learners" whenever they got an answer to a question wrong. The "learners" were in on the deception, and were not actually receiving shocks, but the volunteers were unaware of this. To widespread surprise, Milgram reported that 40 to 65 percent of his volunteers did what the researcher told them, and gave the maximum shock to the "learners" even when they screamed in pain.
The experiment became hugely important in psychology, helping to explain the psychological mechanisms that lead people to participate in cruel and inhumane events such as the Holocaust. Milgram showed that normal people will do all sorts of immoral things if ordered to do so by an authority figure. Milgram was later criticized for exaggerating his results and unethically manipulating his volunteers; but his obedience experiments remained the crowning achievement of his career.

    Publisher's Summary:
Sigmund Freud was born in 1856, in Vienna, Austria, and died in London in 1939, but his reputation as "the father of psychoanalysis" lives on. The theories he introduced in his masterwork, The Interpretation of Dreams, revolutionized the treatment of mental illness in the late 19th century.
Based on his success in using new techniques he had developed with his patients, and on conclusions he drew from analyzing his own dreams, Freud said that dreams offered a window into the workings of the unconscious mind. So decoding dreams could help people understand the emotions underlying their actions.
Some criticized Freud's theories for being based on anecdotes rather than provable facts. In time, those criticisms contributed to Freud and his work being marginalized. But technology now allows scientists to test Freud's theories in a way that was not possible in his day. The new science of neuropsychoanalysis continues the work Freud began when he first published this book nearly 125 years ago.
