    Title: Unbroken Brain
Subtitle: A Revolutionary New Way of Understanding Addiction
    Author: Maia Szalavitz
    Narrator: Marisa Vitali
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-21-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 406 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
More people than ever before see themselves as addicted to or recovering from addiction, whether it's alcohol or drugs, prescription meds, sex, gambling, porn, or the Internet. But despite the unprecedented attention, our understanding of addiction is trapped in unfounded 20th-century ideas, addiction as a crime or as brain disease, and equally outdated treatment.
Challenging both the idea of the addict's "broken brain" and the notion of a simple "addictive personality", Unbroken Brain offers a radical and groundbreaking new perspective, arguing that addiction is a learning disorder, and shows how seeing the condition this way can untangle our current debates over treatment, prevention, and policy. Like autistic traits, addictive behaviors fall on a spectrum - and they can be a normal response to an extreme situation. By illustrating what addiction is and is not, the book illustrates how timing, history, family, peers, culture, and chemicals come together to create both illness and recovery - and why there is no "addictive personality" or single treatment that works for all.
Combining Maia Szalavitz's personal story with a distillation of more than 25 years of science and research, Unbroken Brain provides a paradigm-shifting approach to thinking about addiction.

    Not what I expected
I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about addiction as a learning disorder. There wasn't much development of this idea to explain more about why it is a learning disorder or how thinking of it that way would change our understanding of it. Instead, the author just asserted it as a basis for a lengthy discussion of the problems with current drug policies and the need for reform. I'm sympathetic to her viewpoint but was disappointed because I have heard these arguments before.
An incredible new way of understanding addiction
If you or a loved one struggles or has struggled with addiction you owe it to yourself to read this book. The story is incredible but the research and journalism on display are staggering in their completeness and depth of thought. This is one of the most important books I've ever read.
Reconsidering all I thought I knew
I was raised by a raging alcoholic father and a "wire monkey" mother. I've been involved in three interventions. I went to ACA meetings on a weekly basis for ten years. I thought I knew a lot about addiction. I did not.
    Disappointing
What would have made Unbroken Brain better?
I really like the concept of this book, but there are so many factual errors that I cannot continue to listen to it. I am a behavioral psychologist, and someone in my field should have been asked to proofread this book for accuracy. The author has an interesting idea, but she lacks a clear understanding of the research and concepts in the field of psychology. It is unfortunate that so much myth and misinformation made its way into publication.
    PLEASE read this book!
Extremely educational for people who have little understanding of addiction or that world. This book totally changed my view on so many ideas, and gave me plausible, effective solutions to help my loved ones. I will be reading it again and owning a hard copy.

    Critic Reviews:
"Lindsay C. Gibson, PsyD, gives practical insight into a prevalent problem.... The book is impeccably clear.... This utter lack of confusion makes the book quite soothing, despite the heavy subject." (
    Foreword Magazine)

    Astonishing information.
It seem that my whole life I was searching for the information in this book. I came upon this book by strange chance, and I'm so pleased to have found it. Thank you audible for having us in your library this book has shown me so much about myself and my family structure. I absolutely recommend it, not only to those who feel that they might have emotionally immature parents, but also for those people who feel that their own partner might be suffering from emotionally immature parents. Performance only gets 3 stars because the narrator seemed to inconsistently flip-flop between the "character voice" to a regular reading voice when it came to the case studies, or examples from clients.
Emotional maturity is a topic worthy of study
If you could sum up Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents in three words, what would they be?
    Helpful and informative
What did you like best about this story?
I like that the text was able to both discuss the effect of a lack of emotional maturity of parents on their grown children as well as discussing emotional maturity in general. I didn't feel that I was getting only a look at "this is what happened to these adults" but rather a continuum of the effects of emotional immaturity in all stages, including the ability to reflect on my own life and emotional maturity as a parent and how it may affect my children.
What does Marguerite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The narration was well delivered and kept me interested. I'm a slow reader, and so I expect it would have taken me much longer to get through a print version, but Ms. Gavin kept the text moving along and always kept me interested.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Not based on the book
    Any additional comments?
All in all, I was very pleased with the book as a study of emotional maturity at all levels. It was very helpful and gave me a good understanding of the subject, and made me want to learn more, not to mention find ways to mature emotionally. It also did help to a great degree regarding digging into the past and finding the roots of why we act the way we do.
    Excellent
Concise, honorable, nonjudgmental presentation of emotional immaturity. Easy to identify with descriptions of how that effects relationships.

    Title: Grit
Subtitle: The Power of Passion and Perseverance
    Author: Angela Duckworth
    Narrator: Angela Duckworth
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-03-16
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10810 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In this must-listen book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and businesspeople - both seasoned and new - that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called "grit".
Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur "genius" Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success. Rather, other factors can be even more crucial, such as identifying our passions and following through on our commitments.
Drawing on her own powerful story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently bemoaned her lack of smarts, Duckworth describes her winding path through teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to the hypothesis that what really drives success is not genius but a special blend of passion and long-term perseverance. As a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Duckworth created her own "character lab" and set out to test her theory.
Here, she takes listeners into the field to visit teachers working in some of the toughest schools, cadets struggling through their first days at West Point, and young finalists in the National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what she's learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers - from J.P. Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to the cartoon editor of The New Yorker to Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll.
Winningly personal, insightful, and even life changing, Grit is a book about what goes through your head when you fall down and how that - not talent or luck - makes all the difference.
    Critic Reviews:
"Psychologist Angela Duckworth's winning performance is a nice blend of confidence in her scientific findings and humility about her personal and professional journey. Her accessible writing and speaking charm help her research on character reveal much about why people with the same abilities get vastly different results." (

The Soul of The Super Achievers
I have been studying ways to improve myself and my kids for almost a decade. I've read and listened to many books that talked about grit. And I searched many times for "Angela Duckworth and grit". Well, what a beautiful surprise to find this excellent book and to listen to it twice already, in the month of its release. Angela Duckworth is the main scientist that studies GRIT. And in this book she delivers all her knowledge in a very profound yet comprehensive way.
But, instead of writing only about grit and her researches, she goes beyond and talks about play, deliberate practice, flow and many other important topics of the psychology of success.
I will try to highlight the message, but I recommend you to read the book at least once.
Grit is a consistency of effort and practice. A gritty person have the attitude of never giving up, have an obsession and go for it, try to be the best in the world and always search for ways to improve; A gritty person has passion and perseverance.
Having grit is better than having talent (but better to have both).

  • Love's Executioner Audiobook by Irvin D. Yalom

    Title: Love's Executioner
    Author: Irvin D. Yalom
    Narrator: C.M. Carlson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-18-16
Publisher: Echo Point Books & Media
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 285 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The collection of 10 absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter. In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too-human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist. Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.
The audio version of the book includes an exclusive interview with Dr. Yalom.
    Members Reviews:
You Cant Make This Stuff Up
The saying, You cant make this stuff up lives in the cases Irvin D. Yalom shares with us. Considering that not much action happens in most of the stories, each has its own way of reaching out and touching you, deeply. Some stories dont just touch, they grab and hold on. We all, each of us, struggle. In excellent narrative form, Yalom consistently weaves this thread throughout and between the stories. This connected commiseration binds the reader/listener to the perspectives of both the therapist and his patients, while it also keeps the reader/listener in full appreciation of the art of narrative, simply for the sake of story, which in this collection happens to be true and, as such, more intriguing.
Please note, I did not pay attention to the narrators by line before engaging in the listen I know, shame on me. The certainty that the voice in my ear was author Irvin D. Yalom remained fully in tact until the writing of this review. Narrator C.M. Carlson speaks the trials in this book with the ease and connectedness of a person who has known firsthand knowledge of and experience with each patient. Carlson delivers a quintessential voiceover experience one that is free of a grating voice; over dramatization; insufficient pitch or enunciation; poor or non-existent character distinction; and most difficult of all (in my humble opinion), detectible gaps between story and narrator. I dropped a star because in several areas, extraneous background noise injects itself into the production. Had the noise been more strategically placed, it would have worked well as chapter markers, which was exactly what I thought it was at first. The noise occurs more frequently in the first few stories than the latter. It took me a while to figure out that the rather jilting interruptions were jet engines. This is another prime example of why Audible should add an Editing or Production rating category. Since there is none, and because the likelihood that Carlson was aware of his proximity to an airport and the correlating noise level, Im knocking off what could have been a perfect narration score.
    Required reading for any therapist
I didn't know this is what I have been looking for until I read it. A must read for therapists, or potential therapist, gives a colorful representation of what it is like to work with clients.
    Espectacular read
Personal, incisive, honest and exposing. I enjoyed every single story and the connections that each patient had with my own fears, shame, anger and disappointments. Yalom's candid observations about himself were so meaningful as well.

    Publisher's Summary:
Depression is not a disease. It is a symptom.
Recent years have seen a shocking increase in antidepressant use the world over, with one in four women starting her day with medication. These drugs have steadily become the panacea for everything from grief, irritability, and panic attacks to insomnia, PMS, and stress. But the truth is, what women really need can't be found at a pharmacy.
According to Dr. Kelly Brogan, antidepressants not only overpromise and underdeliver, but their use may permanently disable the body's self-healing potential. We need a new paradigm: The best way to heal the mind is to heal the whole body.
In this groundbreaking science-based and holistic approach, Dr. Brogan shatters the mythology conventional medicine has built around the causes and treatment of depression. Based on her expert interpretation of published medical findings combined with years of experience from her clinical practice, Dr. Brogan illuminates the true cause of depression: It is not simply a chemical imbalance but a lifestyle crisis that demands a reset. It is a signal that the interconnected systems in the body are out of balance - from blood sugar to gut health to thyroid function - and inflammation is at the root.
A Mind of Your Own offers an achievable, step-by-step 30-day action plan - including powerful dietary interventions, targeted nutrient support, detoxification, sleep, and stress reframing techniques - women can use to heal their bodies, alleviate inflammation, and feel like themselves again without a single prescription.
Bold, brave, and revolutionary, A Mind of Your Own takes listeners on a journey of self-empowerment for radical transformation that goes far beyond symptom relief.

    Excellent material
If this is the first time you have heard the material or it's a reminder, this book is right on the mark. As a functional nutritionist I know when I stray from what works for me and try to justify it saying it's ok, I should be able to handle it, it just doesn't work. I've had "depression" all my life searching for ways to "handle" it from meds to counseling to more permanent solutions and nothing is more powerful than what is suggested in this book.
    Critical and Necessary Read
I found the information presented here to be brave. We need more specialists in the field of health to come forth with their experiences and knowledge of Big Pharma and the food industries incessant corruption that is poisoning us from every direction. We can't simply stand aside any longer and just allow it. Voices must be heard in whatever capacity possible. If you are not comfortable with leading edge information you may find this book to be more in line with conspiracy but if you have intuition and ability to think for your self you will know the truth when it rings.

With chapters addressing the needs of specific age groups, from newborns through teens, The Highly Sensitive Child delivers warmhearted, timely information for parents, teachers, and the sensitive children in their lives.
