    Title: The Upward Spiral
Subtitle: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time
    Author: Alex Korb
    Narrator: David deVries
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-15
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Depression can feel like a downward spiral, pulling you down into a vortex of sadness, fatigue, and apathy. Based in the latest research in neuroscience, this audiobook offers dozens of little things you can do every day to rewire your brain and create an upward spiral toward a happier, healthier life.
Depression doesn't happen all at once. It starts gradually and builds momentum over time. If you go through a difficult experience, you may stop taking care of yourself. You may stop exercising and eating healthy, which will end up making you feel even worse as time goes on. You are caught in a downward spiral, but you may feel too tired, too overwhelmed, and too scared to try to pull yourself back up. The good news is that just one small step can be a step in the right direction.
In The Upward Spiral, neuroscientist Alex Korb demystifies the neurological processes in the brain that cause depression and offers effective ways to get better--one little step at a time. In the book, you'll discover that there isn't "one big solution" that will solve your depression. Instead, there are dozens of small, practical things you can do to alleviate your symptoms and start healing. Some are as simple as relaxing certain muscles to reduce feelings of anxiety while others involve making small efforts toward more positive social interactions. Small steps in the right direction can have profound effects--giving you the power literally to "reshape" your brain.
Like most people, you probably didn't wake up one day and find yourself completely depressed. Instead, it probably happened over time, as a series of reactions to difficult situations and negative thinking. But if you are ready to reverse the trajectory of your depression and find lasting happiness, this audiobook will show you how.

    Practical & Positive
This is a fascinating look at the neuroscience of the brain and depression. It is very accessible and offers small, easy changes that can be implemented to alter the way you feel. I particularly liked the reasoning and science presented to back up and explain the changes the author suggests. This makes these new behaviors understandable and action oriented. Whether you are suffering from depression or just feeling stuck and not as happy and positive as you have in the past--this book and theory offers a way forward. I found the book to be supportive, simple, and engaging.
My only suggestion is that if the science bogs you down--fast forward past those parts and focus on the changes suggested. You can always go back and listen to the science later. It is a quick listen and helpful if you hear it more than once. Also, to me, the narrator starts out speaking overly fast--this improves as the book progresses. Overall, a positive and informative book that is worth the time and filled with sensible advice.
Excellent blend of theoretical explanation and practical suggestions!
Alex Korb offers very practical ideas for small steps that people can take, to have a profound effect on their mood and wellbeing, along with all the neuroscientific background to explain how these small steps lead to such great change. An excellent book, highly recommended!
    Helpful and simple
The methodologies mentioned in the book are very straightforward and useful.

    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 577 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The New York Timesbestselling author of The Brain That Changes Itself presents astounding advances in the treatment of brain injury and illness. Now a new afterword.
Winner of the 2015 Gold Nautilus Award in Science & Cosmology
In The Brain That Changes Itself, Norman Doidge described the most important breakthrough in our understanding of the brain in 400 years: the discovery that the brain can change its own structure and function in response to mental experience - what we call neuroplasticity.
His revolutionary new book shows, for the first time, how the amazing process of neuroplastic healing really works. It describes natural, noninvasive avenues into the brain provided by the forms of energy around us - light, sound, vibration, movement - which pass through our senses and our bodies to awaken the brain's own healing capacities without producing unpleasant side effects. Doidge explores cases where patients alleviated years of chronic pain or recovered from debilitating strokes that had plateaued; children on the autistic spectrum or with learning disorders normalizing; symptoms of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and cerebral palsy radically improved; and other near-miracle recoveries. And we learn how to vastly reduce the risk of dementia with simple approaches anyone can use.
For centuries it was believed that the brain's complexity prevented recovery from damage or illness. The Brain's Way of Healing shows that this very sophistication is the source of a unique kind of healing. As he did so lucidly in The Brain That Changes Itself, Doidge uses stories to present exciting, cutting-edge science with practical real-world applications and principles that everyone can apply to improve their brains' performance and health.

    Worth waiting for!
    The master of neuroplasticity,
Norman Doidge, is the next Oliver Sacks. His first book, The Brain That Changes Itself, is a hallmark, one of the greatest neuroscience books I've read and recommend. That book is about the greatest researchers and their conquests. This book is about people, their problems (Parkinson's disease, chronic pain, autism, dyslexia, brain trauma...) and how they try to get better. Is a great book. I got a little skeptical about the the laser therapy, but the rest is very interesting. Worth the wait!
    Exceptional Summary of Neuro-Plasticity
Like his previous book, "The Brain that Changes Itself", Norman Doidge MD, provides a state of the art up-date on his reporting of the more prominent practices and techniques for the application of Neuro-Plastic changes in the brain that are currently known. His direct, hands-on approach of meeting the scientists, engineers, doctors, and practitioners that are developing and using the tools and techniques, combined with the first person stories of those treated / trained is remarkable. In some ways he is a journalist or scientific report, who also as a certified MD, offers credible analysis of the diagnosis, treatment, and improvements seen it those in need. He offers great hope for recovery for conditions often considered intractable.

Title: Political Psychology: New Ideas for Activists
    Author: Donald Conover
    Narrator: Donald L. Conover
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-09-14
    Publisher: Donald L. Conover
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
This book is about using psychological concepts for political activism. It is intended for politicos of all stripes, left or right; green, black, or white; Christian, Jew, or Muslim; male or female; fundamentalist or pacifist. It is primarily informed by the work of Dr. Carl G. Jung, who many regard as the greatest psychologist of the 20th century.
There are many books with the title Political Psychology. Most of them are written by licensed Jungian analysts or licensed psychotherapists. While those books may contain some things for political activists, it is very difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff for this purpose, and they rarely give true guidance to the person who wants to see true and sustainable change in the world on the entire spectrum of political issues.
The sole purpose of this book is to show by example how to "change the frame" so that political issues can be understood in a new way, in a new context, and beyond the same old tired rhetoric that we see on our cable television channels.
This book is most emphatically not about psychotherapy, and it is not intended to be useful to anyone suspecting they may be suffering from the onset of some mental illness. If you feel that you may be so afflicted, the best I can do is urge you to see a mental health professional, who will be best equipped to set you on the right path to recovery. I am not a licensed therapist. I make no pretensions along those lines. Furthermore, I never intend to become a mental health professional.

    Unbalanced and subjective
Very disappointed in the subjective nature of the content. It is very obviously written from a Democrat view point, which is fine, but it is not neutral as the summary suggest.

A book I wish I could have read earlier
What did you love best about Why Isn't My Brain Working??
It made me understand, concretely, how the brain is in constant interaction with all parts of the body. Tthis interconnection is at the center of most health problems and must be taken into account in the search for well-being, and of course in all our remedial or preventive efforts. A malfunction anywhere often reflects a problem in the brain, and it in turn can cause further damage to the brain. Vaguely knowing that something might be bad for my health was not enough to me to act accordingly, especially in my youth, but knowing concretely how it would damage my brain sure would have been!
What other book might you compare Why Isn't My Brain Working? to and why?
Datis Kharraziac's book on Thyroid, another must. David Perlemutter's Grain Brain. They are all books that probe the deeper workings of the human organism.
    Any additional comments?
If I had read this book twenty, ten, or even five years ago, I would be in hugely better shape today. I have read many books on various aspects of health, and I have invested a lot in all sorts of ways to improve my functional health, but without a deep and detailed understanding of the brain, it never came together for me, and my various attempts as well as those of numerous health practitioners, many excellent in their own domain, never coalesced into the good health I sought.
    Fine, but very elaborate, content
I like the content of the book, but it's quite long, partially due to the many (!) case stories.
First of all, I dislike case stories presented in anecdotal form. Each time a new anecdote is told, one has put oneself in a state of mind to relate to that story.

I taught English for 15 yrs. , and have studied metaphysics longer than that. Sorry to say, but this book is a grammatical nightmare. It is an interesting synopsis of metaphysical teachings. However, good luck on comprehending the subject matter. The syntax is really in need of help. Why didn't someone edit this!?

    Beautifully Clear and Entertaining
In all of creation, the least likely thing ever to be well understood is the human brain. Professor Medina spins what we know and the fuzzy parts we think we know into an engaging and entertaining story. Easy to follow and peppered with fascinating anecdotes and examples, this is a good listen for anyone, regardless of educational level or background in the sciences. As an MD and son of a neurology professor, it is the best telling of this story I have yet found.
    Great Narrator
wow! I am blown away by the narrator in this book. He is charismatic and very well informed. His cadence and tone really hook you and keep you paying attention; you can practically hear his smile as he peppers in anecdotes and real world situations to support what he is speaking about. I highly recommend this audio book.
    Mind blowing!
This is one of the greatest of the great courses. I found the lectures compelling, timely and well-explained. I even re-listened to a few segments because they were so fascinating. Awesome series! I highly recommend this one.
    Brainy but not nerdy
This lecture series teaches you about the structure and function of the brain, and is also packed with practical tips on how to get the best out of your own brain.
What makes this lecture series stand out from the rest is the lecturer.
