Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
A Psychology Journal: Psychological Testing and Measurement speaks in-depth of test reliability and validity. As one may already know reliability and validity are major topics of concern within the broader field. The advent of reliability and validity can pertain to surveys, tests, as well as its measures. Learn the origins of testing as well as the present-day testing formats. When we think of behavior what word first comes to mind? Thats right psychology, the study of behavior. Two such means in which behavior can occur is through both social and environmental influences. Environmental influences can include reaching for an umbrella on a rainy day, and social influences may include playing sports because other peers are engaging in such activity. These social and environmental influences are not concrete, so too is behavior unpredictable.
The unpredictability of behavior in itself may be enough reason to investigate the social and environmental influences on behavior. When viewing behavior as instinctual this is to say complex behavior patterns possess a genetic determinant. Activities the result of instinctive behavior include migration, hibernation, and mating behavior. This instinctive explanation of behavior is also termed species-specific behavior. This type of behavior refers to not only complex behavior but also unlearned and unmodified behavior patterns of a certain species under certain circumstances. Instinctual behavior though thorough only explains one half of the nature versus nurture dichotomy - the never ending struggle between associationism (empiricism) and rationalism. In existence are many forms of experiential or behavioral learning such as Thorndikes instrumental conditioning, Skinners operant conditioning, and Pavlovs classical conditioning.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Freakonomics of math - a math-world superstar unveils the hidden beauty and logic of the world and puts its power in our hands.
The math we learn in school can seem like a dull set of rules, laid down by the ancients and not to be questioned. In How Not to Be Wrong, Jordan Ellenberg shows us how terribly limiting this view is: Math isnt confined to abstract incidents that never occur in real life, but rather touches everything we dothe whole world is shot through with it.
Math allows us to see the hidden structures underneath the messy and chaotic surface of our world. Its a science of not being wrong, hammered out by centuries of hard work and argument. Armed with the tools of mathematics, we can see through to the true meaning of information we take for granted: How early should you get to the airport? What does public opinion really represent? Why do tall parents have shorter children? Who really won Florida in 2000? And how likely are you, really, to develop cancer?
How Not to Be Wrong presents the surprising revelations behind all of these questions and many more, using the mathematicians method of analyzing life and exposing the hard-won insights of the academic community to the laymanminus the jargon. Ellenberg chases mathematical threads through a vast range of time and space, from the everyday to the cosmic, encountering, among other things, baseball, Reaganomics, daring lottery schemes, Voltaire, the replicability crisis in psychology, Italian Renaissance painting, artificial languages, the development of non-Euclidean geometry, the coming obesity apocalypse, Antonin Scalias views on crime and punishment, the psychology of slime molds, what Facebook can and cant figure out about you, and the existence of God.
Ellenberg pulls from history as well as from the latest theoretical developments to provide those not trained in math with the knowledge they need. Math, as Ellenberg says, is an atomic-powered prosthesis that you attach to your common sense, vastly multiplying its reach and strength. With the tools of mathematics in hand, you can understand the world in a deeper, more meaningful way. How Not to Be Wrong will show you how.
    Members Reviews:
Great book but better in writing
The title of this book is somewhat misleading (which the author admits). Instead it should have been "how to use math to not feel stupid when you are wrong". The author freely admits the dark truth, most people are not going to use the math they learn. Amazingly this is true even of scientists. Most of the math stuff I learned I don't need, as now I use Excel and Mathematica. Yet this book explains the part of math I do use, and many people don't realize is the important part of math, that is, to extend common sense by other means. This book includes primers of the very basics of calculus and statistics that everyone should know. The stories are humorous, interesting, and make the point that a little math can really help make good decisions.
Unfortunately, there are some parts of this book that don't translate well to audio. A table of numbers can be compared at a glance, but a bunch of spoken numbers are not easy to compare. If you wonder what good is learning math, this is a great book, but I would recommend the written version.

    repeat but still good
I'm starting to feel like if you have read one Hanson book you have read them all. his books all have the same things. at least the ones I've read. but it's still good information
    i love this book
i absolutely love this book. listened to it a couple of times, and went back and created a yoga class sequence for a student of mine that was 10 weeks. i grew, and he grew and loved it as well. great things to take into everyday life, and great ways to get the right perspective for breakthroughs and "revelations of the obvious".
    Beginner focused
This topic is of passionate interest to me and I was expecting to dive deeper into the science behind how the awareness of meditation/mindfulness and neuroscience can provide an expanded access to living at our fullest.
Im on chapter 7 and there are way too many beginner practices directed to someone that has never heard of the topic. It slows down the book and Im loosing interest - I am not a beginner in this topic, and although I respect that we are all in different places - it would have been great if the author had designed this book with this in mind as well.
    Not what the title implies
This book has nothing to do with enlightenment. It seems more of a self healing book
    Wonderful
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Would recommend for everyone
Who was your favorite character and why?
Understanding everything that Rick Hanson says , he has a lovely relaxing voice.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The Meditation Exercises are understandable and able to follow along
    Would recommend for bed
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Take your time, you may need to re listen to some chapters to get to grip with the understanding of the topic.
    Any additional comments?
    Wonderful and fantastic read,
    Well worth a credit

    Publisher's Summary:
In this groundbreaking audiobook, New York Times best-selling author Steven Kotler decodes the mystery of ultimate human performance. Drawing on over a decade of research and first-hand reporting with dozens of top action and adventure sports athletes like big wave legend Laird Hamilton, big mountain snowboarder Jeremy Jones, and skateboarding pioneer Danny Way, Kotler explores the frontier science of flow, an optimal state of consciousness in which we perform and feel our best.
Building a bridge between the extreme and the mainstream, The Rise of Superman explains how these athletes are using flow to do the impossible and how we can use this information to radically accelerate performance in our own lives.
At its core, this is an audiobook about profound possibility; about what is actually possible for our species; about where - if anywhere - our limits lie.

    Still unclear
Still not clear how to get into flow with out being on the edge of death
There is no way some of these reviews are real
If there was any sort of narrative whatsoever, or if it wasn't so formulaic.
Extreme sport story > FLOW!!!! > Repeat
Admittedly I couldn't finish it. It was grueling.
It's hard to take a book seriously that
Says things such as, "that was like painting the Mona Lisa upside down and blind folded". Actual quote to describe doing a skateboard jump over the Great Wall of china.
    Less Hyperbole, Please
I'll admit up front, I didn't finish this book. I had high hopes after hearing an interview with the author, but... well, I can't claim to be the best athlete, but speaking as someone with a footing in the world of art, when somebody makes the claim that a certain move in a given sport is "the equivalent of Leonardo da Vinci painting the Mona Lisa with a steak knife shoved through his eye"... all bets are off. That statement is beyond meaningless, and there are so many more like this that it renders the discussion just as meaningless. I'd put down a fiction book if it were written like that. From nonfiction, there's no excuse. I skipped ahead in the book from there hoping for more meat and potatoes. I didn't find much beyond more anecdotes, hyperbole, and very little practical application. I'll go again at a later date now that I know what to expect, but as of this review, I'm just disappointed. Hyperbole may be the name of the game when dealing with extreme sports, but I was looking for something else.
Not a very good practical guide
This book was an interesting introduction to the idea of flow. But the majority of the book is essentially stories of the multitude of impressive feats accomplished by extreme athletes. It's less so a practical guide (as much as a practical guide to reaching this state might be possible) to achieve flow - which really is more of what I was hoping for.
Nevertheless I will likely go over this book again and listen to select chapters.

    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1338 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The New York Times best-selling author of Physics of the Impossible, Physics of the Future and Hyperspace tackles the most fascinating and complex object in the known universe: the human brain.
For the first time in history, the secrets of the living brain are being revealed by a battery of high-tech brain scans devised by physicists. Now what was once solely the province of science fiction has become a startling reality. Recording memories, telepathy, videotaping our dreams, mind control, avatars, and telekinesis are not only possible; they already exist.
The Future of the Mind gives us an authoritative and compelling look at the astonishing research being done in top laboratories around the world - all based on the latest advancements in neuroscience and physics. One day we might have a "smart pill" that can enhance our cognition; be able to upload our brain to a computer, neuron for neuron; send thoughts and emotions around the world on a "brain-net"; control computers and robots with our mind; push the very limits of immortality; and perhaps even send our consciousness across the universe.
Dr. Kaku takes us on a grand tour of what the future might hold, giving us not only a solid sense of how the brain functions but also how these technologies will change our daily lives. He even presents a radically new way to think about "consciousness" and applies it to provide fresh insight into mental illness, artificial intelligence and alien consciousness.
With Dr. Kaku's deep understanding of modern science and keen eye for future developments, The Future of the Mind is a scientific tour de force - an extraordinary, mind-boggling exploration of the frontiers of neuroscience.
    Critic Reviews:
"In this expansive, illuminating journey through the mind, theoretical physicist Kaku (Physics of the Future) explores fantastical realms of science fiction that may soon become our reality. His futurist framework merges physics with neuroscience...applied to demonstrations that show proof-of-principle in accomplishing what was previously fictional: That minds can be read, memories can be digitally stored, and intelligences can be improved to great extents. The discussion, while heavily scientific, is engaging, clear, and replete with cinematic references.... These new mental frontiers make for captivating reading." (Publishers Weekly )
"Kaku turns his attention to the human mind with equally satisfying results. Telepathy is no longer a fantasy since scanners can already detect, if crudely, what a subject is thinking, and genetics and biochemistry now allow researchers to alter memories and increase intelligence in animals. Direct electrical stimulation of distinct brain regions has changed behavior, awakened comatose patients, relieved depression, and produced out-of-body and religious experiences. Kaku is not shy about quoting science-fiction movies and TV (he has seen them all) he delivers ingenious predictions extrapolated from good research already in progress." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Chin tells the story of the popularization of brain science with an up-tempo, keeping the listener's interest in the dense material....

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
How does the brain generate a conscious thought? And why does so much of our knowledge remain unconscious? Thanks to clever psychological and brain-imaging experiments, scientists are closer to cracking this mystery than ever before. In this lively book, Stanislas Dehaene describes the pioneering work his lab and the labs of other cognitive neuroscientists worldwide have accomplished in defining, testing, and explaining the brain events behind a conscious state. We can now pin down the neurons that fire when a person reports becoming aware of a piece of information and understand the crucial role unconscious computations play in how we make decisions. The emerging theory enables a test of consciousness in animals, babies, and those with severe brain injuries.A joyous exploration of the mind and its thrilling complexities, Consciousness and the Brain will excite anyone who is interested in cutting-edge science and technology and the vast philosophical, personal, and ethical implications of finally quantifying consciousness.
    Members Reviews:
I had no idea we knew this much.
I mean really: they can now tell whether a "vegetative" person is partially-conscious or not by looking at brain scans. They can actually see four distinct signatures of consciousness. That's amazing.
Scientists now understand how subliminal stimuli can "prime" the mind to think about certain things without registering in the conscious mind, right down to the nuts and bolts of it. I honestly didn't think science knew that yet.
A credible explanation for what's actually going wrong in schizophrenic minds is presented. Not a hand-wavy "chemical imbalance," a physical mechanism, with evidence. Definitely wasn't expecting that.
The idea that consciousness is a "global workspace" sheds light on the advantages of consciousness and why we evolved it in the first place, as well as its limitations. You will leave the book reflecting on the different aspects of your mind that are contributing to your conscious experience right now. Funny enough, most of your pre-frontal cortex is being told to shut up until its needed.
If you're looking for a non-mystical, science-based update on what we know about consciousness right now, get this book. It was more than I hoped for.
Excellent Overview of recent developments in brain science
This book is a wonderful overview of recent developments in brain science namely the development and consciousness and how consciousness functions. He also spends some time talking about a disease of consciousness ie schizophrenia.
The author does a great job of reviewing different experiments that led to an understanding of consciousness through its neuroanatomy and neuronal function of its various modules and feed back loops.
My only complaint is that I think to fully appreciate this book the reader would need some basic background in neurology and neuroanatomy.
For example, he Spends a lot of time talking about feedback loops, neurons in various structures within the brain that create consciousness. iAlthough he spends a brief amount of time talking about the locations and functions of various structures such as the parietal lobe, occipital lobe, basil ganglia, thalamus and anterior cingulate gyrus, His explanations are very brief.

    Title: Brainstorm
Subtitle: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain
    Author: Daniel J. Siegel
    Narrator: Daniel J. Siegel
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-07-14
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 255 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Between the ages of twelve and twenty-four, the brain changes in important and, at times, challenging ways. In Brainstorm, the renowned psychiatrist and bestselling author of Parenting from the Inside Out, The Whole-Brain Child, and Mindsight, Daniel Siegel busts a number of commonly held myths about adolescence for example, that it is merely a stage of immaturity filled with often crazy behavior to reveal how it is in fact a vital time in our lives in terms of charting the course for the adults we ultimately become. According to Siegel, during adolescence we learn important skills, such as how to leave home and enter the larger world, how to connect deeply with others, and how to safely experiment and take risks, thereby creating strategies for dealing with the worlds increasingly complex problems.
In this groundbreaking audiobook, Siegel offers teens and parents a road map for understanding the adolescent mind that will help families not just survive but also thrive through the teenage years and beyond.
    Critic Reviews:
Dr. Siegel aptly characterizes the teen years as the most powerful life phase for activating courage, purpose, and creativity. With his usual personal and compassionate delivery, he illustrates how we can all become more aware, empathetic, and understanding of teenagers and ourselves. A visionary and a guide, Siegel knows that if we treat teenagers with the respect and understanding they deserve, they are more likely to live up to their greatest capacities. (Laura S. Kastner, clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, University of Washington, and author of Wise-Minded Parenting: 7 Essentials for Raising Successful Tweens + Teens)
    Members Reviews:
    Narration for kindergarteners...
This audiobook was primarily designed, apparently, for parents and teenagers to listen to together, so that both could learn about the strengths and challenges of the teenage brain. I admire Daniel Siegel's work tremendously, and the content of the book is excellent, but he sounds to me like he is reading to kindergartners. It's definitely not Mister Rogers ("Want to hear about your brain, boys and girls?") but veering too far in that direction for my tastes. I kept listening, but thought about the adolescents with whom I work, and what their reactions might be. Being talked down to is one of their number one hot-button issues, so I'll have to do some research on reactions from a few of them...
I'll have to get the print edition
While I find the subject fascinating, the reading was tortuous to listen to. Subject material best read in print anyway.
I Really Wanted This Book To Be Good, But...
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, as with the reviews of many of Daniel Siegel's other books, the actual usable information that was given could have been given in 1 chapter. I picked this book to learn about the teenage brain, not Dr. Siegel's own brand of Mindsight Meditation. Not that I'm against meditation, but his version is very simplistic and can't imagine the teenagers that I'm around giving it much respect as it lacks any substance.
    What aspect of Daniel J.

    Title: How Dogs Love Us
Subtitle: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 765 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
The powerful bond between humans and dogs is one thats uniquely cherished. Loyal, obedient, and affectionate, they are truly mans best friend. But do dogs love us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology to study how the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at him: What is my dog thinking?
After his family adopted Callie, a shy, skinny terrier mix, Berns decided that there was only one way to answer that question - use an MRI machine to scan the dogs brain. His colleagues dismissed the idea. Everyone knew that dogs needed to be restrained or sedated for MRI scans. But if the military could train dogs to operate calmly in some of the most challenging environments, surely there must be a way to train dogs to sit in an MRI scanner.
With this radical conviction, Berns and his dog would embark on a remarkable journey and be the first to glimpse the inner workings of the canine brain. Painstakingly, the two worked together to overcome the many technical, legal, and behavioral hurdles. Bernss research offers surprising results on how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom.
How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence.
    Critic Reviews:
This books abundant appeal and value come from following Berns through the challenges of constructing the experiment and especially of training his dog to participate. Like a catcher and pitcher, he writes, he and his dog became a team. The satisfaction of that relationship perhaps explains why our two species have lived together so long and happily. (
    The Boston Globe)
"A neuroscientist wonders what goes on in the minds of our pet dogs: Do we delude ourselves when we believe that they love us? [
How Dogs Love Us is] a solid introduction to an appealing new area of research." (
    Kirkus)
"The book is as much a scientific exploration of how the canine brain might function as it is a deeply personal story about Berns's relationship with dogs as pets and colleagues. Ultimately that connection is what makes the book compelling." (
    Scientific American MIND)

    waste of time
This book spent all its time explaining how they were able to get a dog's head into an MRI scanner, but I never learned how dogs love us. I gave up on listening 1/2 way through this book because it was filled with information about operating an MRI, but did not address the issue of how dogs love us
    Very slow going
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I am at chapter 9 of the book and we have yet to get to any actual findings. The details of the academic legal bureaucracy are not interesting. Somehow I suspect the publisher encouraged this buildup, but I just want to skip ahead to the science or findings that I hope will materialize.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In Focus, Psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman, author of the #1 international best-seller Emotional Intelligence, offers a groundbreaking look at today's scarcest resource and the secret to high performance and fulfillment: attention.
Combining cutting-edge research with practical findings, Focus delves into the science of attention in all its varieties, presenting a long overdue discussion of this little-noticed and under-rated mental asset. In an era of unstoppable distractions, Goleman persuasively argues that now more than ever we must learn to sharpen focus if we are to survive in a complex world.
Goleman boils down attention research into a threesome: inner, other, and outer focus. Drawing on rich case studies from fields as diverse as competitive sports, education, the arts, and business, he shows why high-achievers need all three kinds of focus, and explains how those who rely on smart practices - mindfulness meditation, focused preparation and recovery, positive emotions and connections, and mental "prosthetics" that help them improve habits, add new skills, and sustain greatness - excel while others do not.
    Members Reviews:
Don't let the authors narrate their own books!
This is an important topic addressed by the Grandfather of Social and Emotional Intelligence and Learning. However, there was an important problem.
The decision to have Dr. Goleman narrate his own text was not helpful. Although a journalist, he's clearly no sort of performer, and has no understanding of how to use his voice appropriately. His volume trailed off occassionally, or he rushed through sentences. I notice this often when authors narrate their own works. Perhaps it's because they are so familiar with their work, they forget that the rest of us are not. Most bothersome, though, was his tendency to whisper at the end of a sentence, as if to emphasize his point. We often do this when speaking, but it has no place in an audiobook performance. I found myself "rewinding" the book again and again to catch what seemed to be an important phase, and eventually just gave up and carried on with the book, ultimately missing what seemed to be important ideas. So, a note to Audible's producers: unless the author is an experienced performer, don't let them narrate! Also, he butchered the pronunciation of bestselling psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's name, which he shouldn't have done if he's connected in the field.
Nonetheless, Dr. Goleman's analysis of our attention to outer, inner, and other types was very insightful. It's particularly helpful to teachers (like me) who are interested in helping kids. I'm looking forward to watching some of his supplamental videos on the topic.
    Good subject, poor audio performance
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, but to read, not to listen.
Were the concepts of this book easy to follow, or were they too technical?
Little technical, that is ok. Very good content and helpful.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
