    Publisher's Summary:
    Audie Award Winner, Non-Fiction, 2014
Malcolm Gladwell, the number-one best-selling author of The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, and What the Dog Saw, offers his most provocative - and dazzling - book yet.
Three thousand years ago, on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won.
    Or should he have?
In David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell challenges how we think about obstacles and disadvantages, offering a new interpretation of what it means to be discriminated against, or cope with a disability, or lose a parent, or attend a mediocre school, or suffer from any number of other apparent setbacks.
Gladwell begins with the real story of what happened between the giant and the shepherd boy those many years ago. From there, David and Goliath examines Northern Ireland's Troubles, the minds of cancer researchers and civil rights leaders, murder and the high costs of revenge, and the dynamics of successful and unsuccessful classrooms - all to demonstrate how much of what is beautiful and important in the world arises from what looks like suffering and adversity.
In the tradition of Gladwell's previous best sellers, David and Goliath draws upon history, psychology, and powerful storytelling to reshape the way we think about the world around us.

    Editorial Reviews:
Editors Select, October 2013 - Get ready to have your view of the world turned upside down. Malcolm Gladwell - best-selling author of
    Blink, The Tipping Point, and
Outliers - returns to present new ways of looking at why being among the advantaged is not always advantageous.
David & Goliath explores the \"art of battling giants\" through the personal accounts of underdogs and misfits whose wild success stories are often falsely considered flukes. This is not a sentimental celebration of good things happening to good people. In true Gladwellian fashion, the real reasons behind so many pull-from-behind wins are completely unexpected. And if you've ever heard any of the author's many speaking engagements you know to expect a lively listening experience with Gladwell narrating the book himself.

    The Art of (Unconventional) War
Every few years, Malcolm Gladwell publishes a fascinating, engaging book on an overarching sociological concept. He started in 2000 with "The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference," defining that point as "the moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point." Gladwell isn't creating trends, as the subjects of his 2008 book "Outliers: The Story of Success" do. Gladwell, after extensive research, gives the concepts names and stories everyone can understand.
"David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants" (2013) is a collection of stories about people who do things differently, either because they are different or because they have no choice but to ignore 'conventional wisdom' to fight and win.

Today's psychologist is apt to be very different from the image most people conjure up when asked to picture one - an image that almost always suggests Sigmund Freud or someone like him, complete with leather couch.
But as indebted as they may be to Freud's landmark explorations of our psychological landscape, modern psychologists are involved in far more than helping people cope with their inner demons. Instead, they are working in areas that now encompass every part of the process by which we develop and function as people:
Now you can gain a basic introduction to psychology - beginning with its historical context and looking ahead to some of the directions it is likely to take in the future - in this fascinating series of 36 lectures from an acclaimed teacher and author. It explores all of the many new areas that now fit comfortably beneath psychology's umbrella and the sophisticated new research methods that have emerged.
These lectures are both an excellent summary of a transformed profession and an ideal starting point for those eager to expand their understanding of the human mind.

Good overview of Psychology with personal opinions, which often lacking in textbooks. The book is also a good supplement for an introductory course.

Title: Your Deceptive Mind: A Scientific Guide to Critical Thinking Skills
    Author: The Great Courses

    Format: Original Recording
Length: 12 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
No skill is more important in today's world than being able to think about, understand, and act on information in an effective and responsible way. What's more, at no point in human history have we had access to so much information, with such relative ease, as we do in the 21st century. But because misinformation out there has increased as well, critical thinking is more important than ever.
These 24 rewarding lectures equip you with the knowledge and techniques you need to become a savvier, sharper critical thinker in your professional and personal life. By immersing yourself in the science of cognitive biases and critical thinking, and by learning how to think about thinking (a practice known as metacognition), you'll gain concrete lessons for doing so more critically, more intelligently, and more successfully.
The key to successful critical thinking lies in understanding the neuroscience behind how our thinking works - and goes wrong; avoiding common pitfalls and errors in thinking, such as logical fallacies and biases; and knowing how to distinguish good science from pseudoscience. Professor Novella tackles these issues and more, exploring how the (often unfamiliar) ways in which our brains are hardwired can distract and prevent us from getting to the truth of a particular matter.
Along the way, he provides you with a critical toolbox that you can use to better assess the quality of information. Even though the world is becoming more and more saturated information, you can take the initiative and become better prepared to make sense of it all with this intriguing course.

    Same Material Different Title
Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor Steven Novella?
Yes, I would try another book from The Great Courses but "No" I would not listen to another book by Professor Steven Novella. This is the 2nd Great Courses I have listened to by Professor Novella/
What do you think your next listen will be?
Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition, 3rd Edition
What aspect of Professor Steven Novellas performance would you have changed?
The information he presents is almost identical to his Great Course on Medical Myths.
Was Your Deceptive Mind: A Scientific Guide to Critical Thinking Skills worth the listening time?
Yes, I enjoy the information presented in "The Great Courses".
    Any additional comments?
I listened to "Medical Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths: What We Think We Know May Be Hurting Us" by Professor Novella as part of "The Great Courses" a couple of weeks before. I felt that this book was just a rehash of the same information under the guise of a different topic (the mind) as opposed to the Medical Profession. I recommend that users/members take one of Professor Novella's courses and not both since you will be frustrated he just goes over the same information. I do appreciate his "skeptic" approach to issues pertaining to the mind as well as medical profession but once you have heard him once you will understand his approach. I hope this review helps.
    Great flow
The organization of these lectures was very good.

    Outstanding
I teach these concepts to graduate students and still learned a lot. I also wrote Dr Robinson to thank him--and he wrote back.
I cannot recommend this course enough to the serious student of humanity.
The Oxford level of examination of psychology
The teaser review that comes up for this course is just plain misguided. As a former Ivy league professor I applaud Professor Robinson's approach to the topic. He puts modern and historic psychology and its underlying theories in the perspective necessary to understand the rational basis from which they were derived.
I am a scientist and I felt this his approach and coverage of a diverse set of related topics was excellent. I should also point out that my wife who is a mental health professional also found this book to be not only a great read, but an excellent coverage of the topic.
How did Psychology come to be what it is now?
What made the experience of listening to The Great Ideas of Psychology the most enjoyable?
This was so thought provoking. It was very similar to an undergraduate course I took years ago, but at the time I didn't really appreciate it as much as I do now. I love gaining the perspective of how ideas and fields came to be, and what influences the different approaches to psychology in study and practice.
Oh my god, just say it.
Now, I'm in love with psychology and enjoyed the first book in the great courses series, but I can't get through this droning.
It's not to say the content isn't interesting, but the presenter is constantly moving backwards and forwards without actually saying anything for minutes on end.
In an attempt to move to a new point in chapter 6 he introduces the topic, why it might be important, people who influenced it (but not why), what things are called in other languages, pointless opinions on the youth in the audience, "what I'm going to demonstrate is", "you don't really need to know x about it at your level"...

    Publisher's Summary:
Every day of your life is spent surrounded by mysteries that involve what appear to be rather ordinary human behaviors. What makes you happy? Where did your personality come from? Why do you have trouble controlling certain behaviors? Why do you behave differently as an adult than you did as an adolescent?
Since the start of recorded history, and probably even before, people have been interested in answering questions about why we behave the way we do. And many fields - including philosophy, psychology, and even theology - are focused on finding explanations. But it's only in recent decades that researchers can finally approach, understand, and solve the mysteries of emotion, thought, and behavior - solutions that help each of us to better know ourselves and the people around us. The result is not only a more solid understanding of what it means to be human, but a stronger foundation from which to live more effectively with others and to grasp their intricate behaviors and quirks.
Now you can gain those benefits through a series of 24 intriguing lectures from an award-winning teacher. Professor Leary takes you on a fascinating journey into the complex heart of who you are, using the latest theories, case studies, experiments, and stories to cast light on a wide variety of human behaviors, both ordinary and puzzling.
Throughout these lectures, you'll learn about the various interacting forces that influence your behavior. These include your genetic blueprint, your personal experiences, your upbringing, and the people and social groups that surround you.

Nowhere near the depth of typical Great Courses
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone who is interested in psychology using this as the very first introduction. The lecturer did a fantastic job with voice modulation and enthusiasm, so I waited a long time for it to improve.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The course sounds fascinating, but it doesn't even go into the depth of a high school biology course when evoking biological explanations. The psychology and neurology were of similar disappointments
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment in the level and material
    Any additional comments?
The Great Courses typically provide a great college lecture set finding a good level of depth and interest. One lump of coal in the diamonds.
    Fascinating and Enlighting Insights
What made the experience of listening to Understanding the Mysteries of Human Behavior the most enjoyable?
What I liked most was the way he explained topics. It helped me to have new insights. He shared some great insights on some commonly held beliefs about how people find happiness. His analysis of how we behave in society, communicate and see ourselves was very interesting. He debunks some widely held ideas with strong, logical argument. It's interesting to see how often popular ideas on self-help are close, but not quite right. For example, the popular belief that if we can just instill in a person more self esteem, they will act and think in a more positive way.

    Publisher's Summary:
Such Stuff as Dreams: The Psychology of Fiction explores how fiction works in the brains and imagination of both readers and writers.
    Members Reviews:
    Why and how fiction works
This is an interesting book about how reading fiction affects our minds, our personalities and our lives. It explains how reading fiction or watching it in the form of films grows naturally out of children's imaginative play and relates closely to dreams. People read fiction for enjoyment but they also read fiction to help them make sense of the world around them and of their personal relationships.
Drawing on the latest psychological research, the author looks at how fiction can change our personalities and reports that contrary to popular opinion those who read fiction are not loners with no friends or family. In fact it is those who read non-fiction who are more likely to fall into this category. I found it fascinating that reading a story can affect your personality to a measurable extent and that those who read fiction usually have better social skills and are better at relating to others. Whether that is cause and effect is not clear though the fact that reading a story can affect the reader's personality makes it seem that reading fiction can give you better interpersonal skills.
The book covers the rapid growth of book clubs throughout the civilised world, both online and face to face. Talking about books read can increase our own understanding of them and also our enjoyment. Book clubs, the author suggests, are as important as departments of literature at universities.
The book consists of eight chapters with the following headings:
Fiction as dream: models, world-building, stimulation
The space-in-between: Childhood play as the entrance
    Creativity: imagined worlds
Character, action, incident: Mental models of people and their doings
    Emotions: Scenes in the imagination
Writing fiction: Cues for the reader
Effects of fiction: Is fiction good for you?
Talking about fiction: Interpretation in conversation
It also includes comprehensive end notes and a twenty four page bibliography as well as a name index and a subject index. This is a beautifully produced book with black and white illustrations throughout the text and will appeal to the general reader who would like to understand why they read fiction. It may also appeal to those who are interested in psychology and the imagination.
The Science of the effect of reading on the reader
This is the book I have been looking for. It is better than the book Empathy and the Novel because it is more scientific with a great bibliography. Every librarian should read this book if they need to remind a stubborn political audience that libraries are worthy of public funds. Reading is the cheapest therapy for a society because it offers an antidote for the over abundance of tragic news bombarding our senses, feeding fear and sinking civil society into cynicism. Librarians Unite! It will be fiction that saves our libraries, not self-help nor philosophy nor world religions. This is the best scientific explanation of how powerful fiction is to human experience.
    About Half Good
There's some cutting edge stuff in here that's important to know if you want to write fiction. A lot of drivel too, but it's hard to tell. The whole thing is delivered in such a rapid-fire monotone it's hard to follow along.
