    Publisher's Summary:
Ever since the magnificent Miss Loucien gave up teaching to join the Bright Lights Theater Company, school days have lacked a certain... drama ...especially for Cissy, who longs for a life in show business, and Kookie, who craves adventure. But when a diphtheria outbreak interrupts the dull routine, Cissy and Kookie are evacuated to the doubtful safety of the Bright Lights summer home - a shipwrecked paddle steamer on the flooded Missouri River.
Thus begins a wild and unpredictable journey downstream serving up grand performances, aggrieved river gamblers, irate lawmen, and perilous races. And when at long last Cissy steps into the limelight, the stakes are higher than she ever imagined.
Renowned storyteller Geraldine McCaughrean weaves a rip-roaring adventure in this funny tale that's chock-full of humor and heart.

    Disappointing
Geraldine McCaughrean is a highly acclaimed YA author. She wrote one the best YA historical adventure novels ever - The Kite Rider. So it makes me sad to say that Sunshine Queen was so dull and disappointing, I didn't even finish it. I was expecting a Huck Finn type adventure with glorious characters reflecting the people and cultures of the mid-west. It had a few quirky characters who did pretty much nothing but talk about their more prosperous past. I gave up when I hit the half-way point. I'm pretty sure most students would do the same.
Highly Entertaining and Funny Adventure Story
Geraldine McCaughrean has shown tremendous range in her writing as well as the ability to turn research into entertaining and gripping stories. The Glorious Adventures of the Sunshine Queen is no different. Cissy, Kookie, and Tibbie must leave their little town in Oklahoma when Diptheria hits. Along with their often stern school teacher Miss May March, they set out on the train to find their former teacher, Loucien Shades Crew and her husband Everett who, along with a host of other interesting characters, live aboard a showboat and are The Bright Lights Theater Company. The Sunshine Queen, temporarily run ashore, finds its way back into the waters of the Numchuck River in Missouri and then the adventure really starts. The Bright Lights Theater Company picks up a crazy cast of performers and set off to try and make their own fortune on the river. Along the way they have to deal with a pirate, some angry townsfolk, and a particularly nasty swindler who tries to take the Sunshine Queen from them.
At first the cast of characters is a bit hard to keep track of since they have names like Cissy and Kookie and Boisenberry (which is where the handy cast of characters page comes in), but once the story is in motion, keeping track of the characters becomes easier. Each one has a distinct set of circumstances and their own personality. Thankfully, each personality is so individual and unique that you quickly forgive the sheer wackiness that abounds in the book. The book is laugh out loud funny at times as Cissy and Kookie often find themselves in situations they shouldn't and Everett has to talk his way out of problem after problem. The final situation near the end of the book seems too good to be true for a group of roving actors and musicians and McCaughrean seems to write with relish as Cissy really comes into her own to solve the problem head on.
Like many books for younger readers, there are lessons to be learned.

    Publisher's Summary:
The author of Heart of a Shepherd offers another sensitive portrayal of military families, this time stationed abroad, in the city of Berlin at that historic time just after the Wall came down.
When 13-year-old Jody and her friends save a badly beaten Russian soldier from drowning, they put into motion a chain of events that will take them from Berlin to Paris and straight into danger. Jody must quickly learn to trust herself, because in the time directly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the border between friend and enemy is not as clear as it once was.
Award-winning author of Heart of a Shepherd Rosanne Parry offers a fast-paced, coming-of-age story filled with adventure, music, friendship, and intrigue.

    Second Fiddle
This is the second book I have read by this author. She has a way of writing a story that the reader can get into. For parents who are looking for something for their children to read that they do not have to preview themselves this is a great author. Her other book Heart of a Shepard is a book you should read as well.
    Four Stars
I loved the book.It was so full of action and humor and friendship. You should really read this book !
    Great book!
This was on the Oregon Battle of the Books list for this year. It is a well written book. The characters are interesting and their adventure together well thought out.
Courtesy of Mother Daughter Book Club. com
Jody and her friends, Giselle and Vivian, can't believe their music teacher has to cancel their trip to Paris for a musical competition. It was supposed to be the last chance they would have to play together before Jody and Giselle leave the U.S. Army base in Berlin and return to the U.S.
Then they witness the attempted murder of a Soviet soldier by his own officers. The girls realize the only way they can truly save his life is to smuggle him out of Berlin. And that trip to Paris may be just the way to do it--if they can figure out how to pull it off.
Second Fiddle by Rosanne Parry is set just after the fall of the Berlin Wall. As children of military or diplomatic parents, the girls in the story all live in homes that are highly disciplined. They're good kids, and because they've moved often they know how to adapt to different environments. But Giselle and Jody are nervous about their impending move. They're not sure they will fit in with the kids at school in the states, and they don't want to lose their friendship in the process.
Their decision to take the soldier to Paris, and the events that follow, can provide great things to discuss in a mother-daughter book club with girls aged 9 to 13. Issues to talk about include kids taking on responsibility, becoming more independent, contributing to important family decisions, and deciding whom they can trust. There's also plenty to talk about in regards to the Soviet Union, the Berlin Wall, military family life, and visiting Paris. I highly recommend it.
a tale of friendship, music and freedom set at the end of the Cold War in Berlin
In her second novel for young people, Rosanne Parry takes us back to Berlin in 1990, at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of communism in Eastern Europe.

I should have seen it coming. A long time before it came I should have known.I was six or seven years old and there was a girl living next door named Peggy. She was a year older than me and a lot stronger and we were wrestling and she held me down....
All of a sudden it seemed there was something about girls that wasnt all bad. I didnt know what it was but I should have known that this first feeling with Peggy Ollendorfer meant that down the road, later, I was in for a big surprise. Afterward, when I was a little older, if youd asked me what the surprise was like, Id have said it was about like getting hit by a train. Puberty.

Absolutely awesome for adolescents and their parents
I love Gary Paulsen! I bought this book for my nephew who is 12 and experiencing puberty. I gave him an iPad for Christmas/birthday but told him he had a reading assignment. He groaned and told me all the assignments he had. I said, "Just read it for me." He groaned again, opened up the book on his iPad and almost immediately started laughing. He was hooked! This is a great book for any child going through (or approaching) puberty. It is also great for parents to remind them of what it was like. I highly recommend this book!
    Five Stars
    Quick delivery. Met my expectations.

Very good book the best that I have ever read
I liked this book because I am going through puberty myself
    For the Birds
Judy Blume's Are You There, God, It's Me, Margaret, was the go-to "puberty read" for girls in the 1970's and early 80's. I've often felt that we need an updated version of it, and something just as honest and current for boys. Sadly, this is not that book. It wanted to be, but it falls short.
First, please understand that this review, and the two-star rating, refers to the audiobook as interpreted by reader William Dufris. The print version should be judged by other standards, and I'll get to that, but an audiobook is a performance, and casting is everything. Dufris' over-the-top verbal antics, hyper-expressive and grating (example, at every turn pronouncing the oft-used "cool" as "keeeeeeeeeewww-uuuuulll!"), and high-pitched nasal whine--meant, I suppose, to imitate a changing voice--completely ruined any chances of the book's being appealing to the over-ten crowd.
Those actually going through puberty are hoping to identify with Duane Homer Leach, to discover common ground, and while some of what Paulsen is portraying is undeniably true, the fingernails-down-a-chalkboard presentation of it is so beyond-the-pale dorky and repellent that it would be hard to imagine any twelve-year-old boy wanting to be associated with Duane. Mr. Dufris is likely hilarious playing younger larger-than-life characters (like the Junie B. Jones sort), but he should be kept away from portraying average adolescents.
Now, the book itself: I kept checking the date of publication, wondering if it's something Mr. Paulsen wrote in his own youth which was now being released without any editing just because he's who he is.

Meg Pickels older brother, Orion, has disappeared. One night, Meg steals out to look for him and makes two surprising discoveries: She stumbles upon a séance that she suspects involves Orion, and she meets the author Charles Dickens, also unable to sleep and roaming the London streets. He is a customer of Megs father, who owns a print shop, and a family friend.
Mr. Dickens fears for Orions safety and for the children of London, and is trying to solve the mystery of their many disappearances. If he can, with Megs help, then perhaps Dickens will be able to write once again.

    Haunting of Charles Dickens
The Pickel family owns a print shop and has customers/friends with the likes of Charles Dickens. The daughter of the house, Meg, is adventurous and daring. She is strong willed and tries to find her missing older brother. While traveling at night through London she unexpectedly meets Charles Dickens. They make a pact that they will save Meg's brother.
I felt different enjoyment from this book then Buzbee's Steinbeck Ghost. Instead of flowing into each book Steinbeck wrote this one was a whole new mystery featuring Dickens and mentions of his stories. Meg and Dickens are interesting partners. Dickens comes across very fun loving which if you have seen real photos of Dickens you would not think that of him because I have not seen one where he smiles.
This book tells about the dark side of the times for children who worked in labor houses like Dickens did once as a child. So book has a little grittiness to it that makes some it hard to enjoy even though it may be based on facts. Dickens does make it laughable at times by dress in odd suits and meeting odd souls. Good read for Dickens lovers.

This is a great series for young adults that is written by a local, Bay Area author. A teacher of mine heard about this author while at a Steinbeck conference from another teacher. We bought the series for the campus library. We cannot keep it on the shelves. The students really enjoy it.
Fascinating Stuff For Its Intended Audience, But Not So Much For Me
Three of us tried to read this book, and, well, only one of us made it through to the end. Now, that could say something about us, but I think it's more a reflection of a writer who was following a formula of other books and proved, in this case, that such things just shouldn't be done. Or, to put it differently, Lewis Buzbee was writing a type of book instead of being inspired from the inside out. My daughter, for instance, read a review of the book in preparation to writing her own, and had an ah-ha! moment when this other reviewer said that the writing "felt forced" (Becky). Interestingly, however, I have heard several middle-school students talk about this book, and they love it. So I'm discombobulated. I thought the Beatles references were just dumb, but they were intrigued by them. I thought there was nothing of Charles Dickens whatsoever in this book, but these students wanted to read Charles Dickens's books after reading this because they liked the character in the book. What we all agreed on is that the illustrations are excellent. So, to be candid, as I think back about the books I read growing up and what I would like were I in school today, I think this book would be well-liked by the maybe-then me.

    Title: Butterfly
    Author: Sonya Hartnett
    Narrator: Rebecca Macauley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-01-10
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Teens, Ages 11-13
    Publisher's Summary:
Here is a gripping, chilling, beautifully observed tale of what a teenage girl will do to keep her friends, by one of Australia's finest writers. Growing up during the 1980s in the safe complacency of the Australian suburbs, Plum Coyle should be happy. But on the cusp of her 14th birthday - and on the fringe of her peer group - she lives in terror of the disapproval of her cruel and fickle girlfriends and, most of all, she hates her awkward, changing body with a passion.
Butterfly is a brilliant and beautifully written novel about the bonds of family, about growing up in suburbia, and about the terrifying vulnerability of early adolescence. It is about the costs of interfering in the lives of others, the consequences of being hurt, and, ultimately, it is about how we must all eventually leave childhood behind.
    Editorial Reviews:
Butterfly, written by one of Australias leading young adult authors, Sonya Harnett, and admirably performed with undertones of sad longing by Rebecca Macauley, is the coming-of-age story about 14-year-old Plum Coyle, a shy and tentative girl who desperately wants to be liked and fit in with the other neighborhood girls.
It is the new friendship Plum starts with Maureen, a wife and mother who Plum reveres, and whose own intentions are less than noble, that truly changes Plums life and outlook forever.
A poignant, often heartbreaking tale about growing up.
    Members Reviews:
    A beautiful finely written story.
When I ordered this book, I didn't realise it was written mainly for young adult readers. However I, as a much older adult reader, enjoyed it immensely. It is well written and the characters are easily believable. I think it would be an excellent choice for younger readers as it shows the journey of one young girl through adolescence.
    Creepy and cringey
I am a Sonya Hartnett fan.. She writes best when she is slightly evil. And this book is evil. Lots of cringe moments and wondering esp the ending which .. well AAAAAAAAAAAAgh.. I loved it .. I give it 5 stars because this book is one of those super scary Australian spiders crawling on the wall sitting right next to your towel..
This is why I LOVE Sonya Hartnett
Hartnett is a word artist, a master craftswoman of language and imagery. Page after page, I was astounded by her skill at drawing unusual parallels and metaphorical connections. Her gift is capitalizing on the complex nature of seemingly simple relationship quandaries. The dialogue is flawless, the pace perfect, the story engaging, and the resolution subtle and roomy for personal interpretion. I recommend for ages 16 and up.
    Five Stars
Item was purchased for one of our schools
Stilted overly-descriptive prose, Not For Me
This book is a YA coming-of-age story but it read more like adult literature. There are definite adult themes, and the descriptions that go on and on and on would probably be off-putting to teens (I know they were to me).
When I started Butterfly I almost thought it was going to have a paranormal twist. Reading the summary made me suspect that, and then when I started it and it seemed to be in another world, I was getting confused. The story is set in the 1970s or 1980s (it never says but that's what I suspect based on references to pop culture).
Plum, whose real name is Ariella, is as awkward as could be, and I felt sorry for her the whole time. Her story brought me back to my own awkward years---memories which I try to keep suppressed.

Aaron, and his friend Jeremy "Booger" Davis, are clowning around at the local swimming hole when Aaron confesses that he's afraid of going home, as he's afraid of his brother Nathan. Jeremy is surprised, but Aaron won't go into any details. But afterwards, when they get to Aaron's house, Aaron asks Jeremy to call him in ten minutes, but when Jeremy does call, either nobody answers, or he is told by Nathan that Aaron isn't there. Worried he tries to go to Aaron's house, but the police arrive before he gets there. It turns out that Aaron is dead, and he's been the victim of a brutal murder, and Nathan is covered with Aaron's blood.
As the story progresses we realize that despite any impression that we might have gotten, this is not crime story, nor is it a murder mystery. It's more of post-crime novella, as the majority of Nancy Springer's story deals with how a young man deals with the aftereffects of his friend's death, how he deals with his family, and how he reacts to the town's backlash, as the town's people blame him for his statements against Nathan. And there will be some serious backlash, as the town decides that they would rather blame the victim, and Jeremy, instead of accepting the fact that they may have a murderer amongst them.
As the novella progresses, Jeremy will have to come to the realization the fact that he knows that the brutal murderer is just who he thinks that it is.
This is a good young adult drama that involves a brutal murder, but does not wallow or indulge in gore, violence, or profanity. With lots of white space and large lettering this book is just a little too short for me, but I'm not the target audience, but young readers should like it, and it can be used as a basis for a family discussion. That, and it's graced with a great wraparound cover by Jonathan Barkat that isn't just ornamental, but actually illustrates something in this novella.
