The only thing Rachel Hingis hated more than swimming was having to play well with others. Edgar Fern, nerd extraordinaire, couldn't find anyone to play with. Life would have been just fine if they never crossed paths.
    Instead, they collided.
The victims of an accidental experiment deep in the corn fields of Iowa, they and four others - Alex, Celeste, Laura and Susan - were changed, and not necessarily for the better. As a mysterious group (insert sinister title here) starts to pick off Red Bug's students, they have a choice to make: become victims, or become heroes.
The bumpy road to being a masked avenger is fraught with conflict, mystery, explosions - and freezees.

Great read for teens and adults!
Older teens (or mature younger teens) and adults will love this sci-fi book. This book is what would happen if Judy Blume decided to write a sci-fi book featuring BatMan, Edward Cullen and Hermione...and yeah, it sounds weird, but trust me that it's the best of all worlds! The characters are relatable and like-able. Each character brings some mystery and intrigue to the story, making you want to know more about each one. An unlikely group of 6, the characters find ways to work together and by the end of book 1 a team is beginning to emerge. I can't wait to read more books in the series!
I love the YA twist on superheros
I was really excited to read this book. I love the YA twist on superheros, it's unique and makes superheros more interesting to me. I also like the format of the book being broken in to short stories that are intertwined. The characters are great, my favorite is Rachel, and you can see the interpersonal dynamics at play with this fledgling group. I am eagerly, and bs somewhat impatiently, waiting for the next volume to be released to get more information about the mysteries behind this group.
Good Light hearted read, Story telling reminiscent of the comics from the 70s and 80s.
The book reminds me of the comics from the 80's. The characters are predictable, little or no developed character, the powers are granted by their psychie, and the powers are a result from a chemical accident.
The book consists of different stories, each a semi-focus on one character, which is how the character and their motives are described, as well as what life is like for them in High School (which I think is the most fun of the book).
I could present you with each character and why the story is, but, why in a book like this? It is light escapism, an easy read, and enjoyable for those of us who were alive when Spiderman #1 came out and remember Steve Dikto's comic characters (which these remind me a lot of), or those young enough to not have been born before the world trade center was hit on 9/11. It doesn't pretend to be Shakespeare not does it pretend to be Clancy, it is exactly what it appears. I will buy the sequel as long as they keep with the same flavor as this book.
    Super good read
(request submitted by Aurora Zahni (author) for an honest critique)
When Aurora asked me to read Apathetic Avengers, I counted the days until the superhero book was in my greedy, little hands. Aurora knows I love comic/superheroes so he was confident I would enjoy this book... which I did.
How could you not like these group of super teens.

Liam Rider's star quickly falls, as he finds military school to be far more than he had bargained for. He finds the cadets harsh and abrasive; and the staff less than welcoming. When the guidance counselor tells him that he is going to be held back a year because of his remedial classes at public school, he feels like life couldn't get any worse.
When he meets Lisbeth Harrington, he feels like the tide may be turning in his favor. She is assigned to help him acclimate to his new surroundings in the middle of a semester, and he quickly realizes that she is the only friend he has at the school. And when he begins having disturbing dreams of kids killing each other and seeing people in his room that aren't really there, he enlists her help to find out why no one has been assigned to room 509 for 20 years - and why he is being tormented by the ghosts of cadets past. Suddenly pulled into the past of the historic school by nightmares of his own suicide, Liam and Lisbeth are catapulted forward into a secretive society of a long history of ghosts, suicide, and murder.

Not really my thing, but it's good
The story is good, if you're into this type of book. Mystical stuff is not my bag, so it wasn't a great fit for me personally. But I'll say that it's well written, the characters are developed very well. You feel for the the protagonist and his plight. The romantic angle is played out well. The narrator was fine. He did justice to the material.

    An ok read
It was all I could do not to jump through the pages and strangle Sam. Near the end of the book, I understood her a bit better......but man is she daft! Of course, I think that was the whole point, so good on ya! Now I have to read book 3!
    Annoyed
I like the story line..but honestly the female lead really gets on my nerves....its hard to like her...she has grieved for 10 years for her friend and the miraculously reunites with him and suddenly he is not good enough?. He can't help what happened to him. And frankly I finder her to he selfish and whiney and
weak...and now she has put both their lives in danger cause she is being a brat.....not sure if I have patience to continue with this story....
    Super natural superness
really not as great as the first book, but intense and entertaining enough to get 4 stars out of me. Sam is taken to a whole new world of shape-shifters, and creatures only one would find in fantasies and folklore. she is forced to make a life-changing decision and finds herself in a deeper amount of trouble than what she's used to.
plenty of twists and turns in this to keep you interested. eager to get to book 3.
    beauty & the beast
I didn't see this change coming. In the first book I thought ok we have a romantic but tragic love story like in Twilight but then it shifts & becomes a modern day Beauty & the Beast love story. Don't be fooled the beast is not necessarily the hideous looking one. I can't wait to see how this ends!
    I am hanging.
LOve it. This is the second to the series, you have to read the first to understand whats happening. But I was and I am hooked. Loving the suspense and what will happen to them all in the end. Sam and Elliot still struggling to find their way.

    Publisher's Summary:
Mary-Esther Sloat is a woman with a patchwork past: three failed marriages, misspent youth, and a series of dead-end jobs. When she attempts to donate a kidney to her dying mother, she learns a life-altering truth: Loretta Boudreau Day is not her biological mother. After Loretta dies, Hurricane Katrina destroys Mary-Esther's only tie to New Orleans: her beloved Nana's house.
For a while, Mary-Esther lives in a battered Chevy van. Armed with a faded birth certificate, she finally corrals the courage to unravel the mystery of her birth at a small hospital in the panhandle of Florida. When she finds the site of the hospital, she is dismayed to learn it now houses the Gadsden County Sheriff's office. Sergeant Jerry Blount befriends Mary-Esther and helps her locate a retired nurse who once worked at the small hospital. After meeting with the senior in a nearby assisted-living facility, Mary-Esther visits the county courthouse to research records for children born on the same date. She discovers a baby girl with a similar last name, Sarah Davis of Chattahoochee, a small town in the same county.
Hattie Davis Lewis lives with her husband Holston and adopted child Sarah Chuntian Lewis in the old family homestead three miles south of Chattahoochee. She often thinks of her older sister, a child also named Sarah who died shortly after birth. Hattie's older brother Bobby Davis, his wife, and son live nearby on the family land. Bobby battles his own demons that threaten his hard-won sobriety.
Mary-Esther camps out in her van at a lake near Chattahoochee, hesitant at first to confront the family she suspects to be her own. Instead of welcoming arms, Mary-Esther finds a clannish community and a brother determined to keep her from claiming her birthright.
How can she blend the person she believed she was with the person she never had the chance to be?
    Members Reviews:
    Separated at birth
For me this is a story of transformation, or perhaps resurrection in a personal sense. It does not happen over night. Adjustments, change, accepting the past for what it was and living in the present come with struggle, set backs and lots of compassionate help. This book includes all of those and more.
The story begins after Mary-Esther Sloats life crumbles around her. She has cared for the only family members she knew, her beloved grandmother and the woman she thought was her mother until they both die. Then the city of New Orleans is ground to mud in the catastrophic flood in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Adding to that she has married three times, each time ending in disaster. She is a homeless, shattered, broken down woman, now in her fifties with little energy for rebuilding a new life. She takes to the road with no particular destination in mind.
It is fall 2006 when the story opens. Mary-Esther has arrived in the small town of Chattahoochee, Florida. She has been living out of her car for over a year and is now running out of money. She is sleep deprived, filthy, and hungry. Out of curiosity, she has decided to try to find her biological family based on her birth certificate listing a hospital in Chattahoochee.
Full disclosure, I now live in this area and the descriptions of places Ive come to know and the people in this area are spot on. I must add that the descriptions of food left my mouth watering. I also learned things about the area I did not know before. This undoubtedly added some to my enjoyment of the book.

    Publisher's Summary:
A novella about a boy named Mick and his struggles with life. His parents' divorce and a friend's suicide make his world unbearable. Each cut has a deeper meaning. A cry for help. I spin my dad's Ruger SP101 revolver on the wood floor of my bedroom. Sometimes, just to see what it feels like, I place the tip of the gun against my temple, but I never once pull the trigger. NO! I'm more into the slice of the blade against my skin and the blood running down my arm. It relieves so much pressure. And I can breathe again....

I liked it because it read like a personal journal from ...
Help Me! by Donna M. Zadunajsky was a very interesting read. I liked it because it read like a personal journal from the the first point of view of the main characters. I'm a huge fan of journaling, so the writing style felt voyeuristic. It was avant-garde in a sense that the writing style is not what I am used to reading in a book.
It's like reading a book on social media. As the reader, you're taken into the private thoughts and experiences of two main characters. Mick is suicidal and depressed after losing his best friend to suicide. Layla is Mick's new best friend that he acquires after he moves to his father's home following the loss of his late best friend. We get to see the perspectives of teenage life, love and friendship through the thoughts of Mick and Layla. I like the interchanging approach to the chapters so that we can see the point of views from both characters and know what they're both thinking and feeling within each scene that plays out. We're not left with many questions as both main characters cover their own thoughts and emotions, themselves, without leaving it to a third narrator's POV. The style is unique. Therefore, it made it feel personal.
Overall, it was a fast paced, good read. I hope that there's more to come.
    ~~Felicia Johnson, Author of "HER"
    Read this book rn!!
I love this book i know so many people that are close to me and that are like mick and blame themselves everyday for what has happened to them or what happened to others. I used to be so depressed and negative because I thought I caused my parents divorce but I don't think like that anymore I'm pretty much happy. Tons of teens will understand this book and it really does hit home.... At least for some people
    Good Suspense
Ms. Zadunajsky did a great job with the suspense in this book and gave a few surprise plot twists at the end of the book. I didn't have trouble wanting to turn the page. There was a little repetitive part in the middle, but the suspense pulled through. Great message.

    Great follow-up
Okay, this was a great follow-up to the Nick side-plot from the last book.
Again, listened to this as an audio. I'm glad Nick could finally find his match. A very cute story. I loved it.
    Same Characters, Much Different Plot
If you could sum up Changed? in three words, what would they be?
Unique, Cute, and Captivating. This book, along with all of Dana's grabbed my attention, and I'm not even a big contemporary fan!
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite character altogether was Nick, as he was definitely not my favorite character in the first book, but his character development has been major, positive, and majorly positive.
Which character as performed by Brittany Morgan Williams was your favorite?
My favorite character when narrated was definitely Summer, and I know that reading it and not hearing emotions in her voice would have made me imagine Summer's character much different.
    Same characters, great new story!
What did you love best about Changed??
I loved that we got to see Nick again, and watch him grow.
What did you like best about this story?
My favorite thing was that Summer was strong and independent and her own girl. She was not JUST about Nick and liking him. She made up her mind and made him wait!
What does Brittany Morgan Williams bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Her voice was great for this story
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Is Nick only changing to get the girl?
    Any additional comments?
A fun book that was full of cute twists and chracters
Adorable story but issues with audio
I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Story: In Changed?, it was really interesting to see the aftermath of the "other guy" (Nick) from Just Pretending and learn more about his side of the story (especially concerning the issues that caused Cam to stop liking him in the first place). I loved how despite the fact this was not told in his POV, it covered different issues from the first book while also making Nick a likable character who I was really rooting for. While I wouldn't necessarily call him the antagonist of Just Pretending, for lack of a better term, I loved that this really showed how the antagonist is the protagonist of their own story and despite how things might seem on the surface, there is always more than one side to every story. Plus, I thought the friendship and subsequent romance between Nick and Summer was not only very sweet but I loved the deviation from that all too typical formula of drama = misunderstanding = break-up = get back together at the last possible second.
Performance: Honestly, there was a serious issue with the audio of this audiobook. For some reason, multiple times throughout the audiobook a sentence would be read and then immediately part or all of that sentence would be repeated.
