The best non-fiction Audible book I've heard

What made the experience of listening to The World Broke in Two the most enjoyable?

Bill Goldstein has certainly studied well how novelists write, because he brings a novelist's sensibility to this book. The characters he describes are vibrant, there is a great arc to the narrative as it weaves these four lives together, and he ends each chapter as a cliffhanger, making you want to read on and on to find out what happens. I had to keep checking Wikipedia to be sure that "The Waste Land" was indeed published in "The Dial" because it seemed so uncertain throughout the book that it would be.

Who was your favorite character and why?

If found Virginia Woolf the most sympathetic and complicated character. She seems to have spoken most freely in her diary and therefore it was easiest to find out about her ambitions, and her insecurities. She came across as the most human. I never realized how all four of the characters interacted with each other so regularly. It was fascinating to learn that about them.

What about Bill Goldsteins performance did you like?

He was clear and concise and easy to follow.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This is the best non-fiction book I have listened to on Audible so far. Mr Goldstein's account is incredibly detailed and erudite, but laid out in such a straightforward way that even a lay person without much knowledge of the key players can follow along and learn. The depth and breadth of research that went into this book is simply astounding. I don't know how he managed to synthesize all of that information into a coherent narrative. He found so many sources and little scraps of information that he then masterfully wove into a coherent and even exciting narrative.

Excellent

What made the experience of listening to The Life of Samuel Johnson the most enjoyable?

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Mr Mayes does a brilliant Dr Johnson. My only gripe is the recording is a little faint and iffy at times but I encourage you to persevere. After 40+ hours of listening, you will feel immersed in the book and that Dr Johnson and Boswell are close friends.

Learn how to pronounce local terms

Love the book but the narrater mispronounced so many Florida terms wrong. You can't do a Keys story using a soft ch in Conch!

insightful, but hard listen/ read

struggled through the first half, almost gave up. pushed through and second half was better. the overall story is good, i think it was told poorly and was very slow to develope.

Fun Listen with some great history

Really fun listen sharing the history of my favorite cultural icon. Tells the story of all the songs that I love made me want to go back and listen to every album in its entire tea over again. Also reminded me of some of the great music from some of Jimmy Buffett's friends.

im not much of a music history buff, I just enjoy hearing peoples stories and how they developed their businesses.

this book makes ongoing references to specific music industry people over and over that didnt really play into the story.

Jane Would Have Approved

This is the best book on Jane Austen and her sparkling novels that I've ever read. In depth, insightful and clear, I was really surprised at how entertaining this was to boot, especially since this could be used as a college text book. I agree wholeheartedly with the review of Donna G. Storey. Unlike the 2nd reviewer, I actually did agree with almost everything in this book, and it helped me to see the bigger picture behind many of the greater themes and the tiny details of each of my six favorite novels.

Thanks to Helena Kelly for eloquently arguing what I always knew in my bones--Jane Austen's novels are deeply political and empower the reader's critical sensibility. They would not be so compelling and timeless if they weren't.

Fascinating story

Loved the book but the narrator has the most awful pronunciation not just if Cornish name places but it took me a while to realise what she meant about many things subaltern for example !!! Rather annoying ..

Disappointing!

Where does Manderley Forever rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Not as good as hoped. Some of the details were dubious.. For example....not a mention was made of Daphne Du Maurier visiting Cyprus whilst she was staying in Egypt. Some say that is where she wrote "Rebecca"....her most famous novel!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Oh dear! The pronunciation of some of the words was awful. Words like "interminable"....you cannot emphasise the "min" surely...? [Interminable].And the pronunciation of the Cornish place names - not great! Quite detracted from the narration overall.HOWEVER - the pronunciation of the French words was great! Credit where it is due....

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I love anything to do with Daphne Du Maurier - so I liked the content but nothing new.

amazing

wow, was the first word that came to mind when I began this book, little did I know that I would be using that word quite often. John's story if full of pain and struggle but positivity as well. How someone can overcome these situations is amazing. PMA. great book

Captured me from beginning to end!

There are so many stories in this book that could be their own books. I found myself waking up in the morning looking forward to listening and waiting to go inside to see my family until the section I was listening to was completed.

The author telling about these events in his own words made it even better. I would tell my wife about some of the stories and I would start taking like the writer to relay them.

I cannot imagine going through what he's been through and coming out the other side at all - and definitely not with a positive mental attitude. Salute to this man, his story, and his evolution.

Yes. Genuine, raw, funny and dramatic. One of the best non-fiction stories told in the modern age. This hero's journey is worth your time and attention.

The most memorable part of this story or the one that resonated loudly is how John survived the Volenti house of horrors and his time being institutionalized.

His story telling is top notch. The book combined with him telling the story is an unshakeable combination.

I listened to this book non-stop.

way, way too long, but at the end its just okay.

really the plot line could have been a little more organized and should have been streamlined by omitting the filler stories. also, I was disappointed by the lack of Cro mags stories--he completely ignored mentioning the few mags shows he did with Harley in the 2000s, which doubled bummed me out since I was at the Hellfest 02 gig they played. This is a CRUCIAL detail as the dispute between Harley and JJ is one of the most legendary beefs in the history of punk, but obviously they let down their walls in order to play a few more gigs together; what events led to the reunion of the closest incarnation of a Mags reunion?

Dear Russian Literary Diary...

I first became aware of Elif Batuman's book almost seven years ago when I saw it suddenly appear (mistakenly?) next to Tolstoy on the Fiction shelf at B&N. A few years later at another bookstore I saw it shelved next to Dostoevsky. At first I was a bit irritated. I figured it was a bit of shelving incompetence. What kind of people were these bookstores hiring these days? Later, however, I softened. I actually began to feel this was a form of NINJA (Sambo?) marketing. Perhaps, it wasn't accidentally placed there. Who actually peruses Literary Criticism/Literary Memoir sections these days? Perhaps, the placement in the Fiction section next to BIG Russian authors wasn't a mistake after all. It actually jammed the book into my craw; dropped it into my radar.

How to describe the book? It isn't exactly a memoir and isn't exactly literary criticism. It reads like a hyper-caffeinated, precocious literary/travel diary for an introspective writer/academic fascinated by the granular context surrounding Russian novels. Batuman isn't just interested in the text. She wants to shoot Chekhov's gun and lay on some train tracks in St. Petersburg. She wants the genealogy and the genetic profile of these novels and stories. Toward the end of her academic career (and her book) it isn't just fetish items and places she is obsessed with.
