Huge book - musical reader appreciates best

This is an exhaustive book. Not being a trained musician, I found it a little hard to follow some off the discussions of music theory. And because the author often quoted from contemporary sources certain aspects of the composer's life seems to be duplicated. I found that by printing a list of Beethoven compositions and having that available as I listened, I was able to place my favorites in context. It's hard to imagine a more complete version of a person's life from that period. A fine story well told. Had I been more musical I would have rated it much higher.

The level of details available about his daily life. Letters and manuscripts (many records kept due to conversations written down because of his deafness).

I read other reviews that complained about too much musical composition details. I thought that I would still enjoy that part but found myself eventually skipping through those parts as they could only be enjoyed by another composer. I still enjoyed the book and learned much about Beethoven's life which is what I was hoping to learn.

Would you consider the audio edition of Beethoven to be better than the print version?

This is a wonderfully in depth examination of Beethoven's life and his times. My only complaint is the occasional mispronunciation.

Although impossible, yes.

Yes. You cannot separate the music from the person. The author told the story of Beethoven and wove in the analysis of his music synchronized with his life.

There are other masterpiece books about Beethoven, but this one gave the most expert analysis of the music.

Beethoven's writing the Heiligenstadt Testament and his death bed.

A great story marred by an awful narration

Would you try another book from Wyatt North and/or David Glass?

For the life of me, I cannot understand why the producers chose this narrator, and then stuck with him throughout production. Nasal, high pitched, using an odd rhythm and accenting all the wrong places in the flow of the story. Terrible reading. I have 400 some audio books and I'm never had to just abandon a book like this because of the narrator. How hard could it have been to get a good one? Or even a less bad one?

Would you be willing to try another one of David Glasss performances?

No, no, no, no, no. Don't understand how he got into the business.

Was J.R.R. Tolkien worth the listening time?

No, because of the narration. I will read the book instead as I am a huge Tolkien fan.

Nice History of Tolkien

Good account of Tolkien's life, including the Inkling era. However, I wasn't impressed with the last two chapters that had nothing to do with Tolkien and were just previews of the author's biography on the current pope.

Good in formation......BUT.......

For such a short book it has plenty of information in it that is very interesting. Here is where the BUT comes in.......the narrator is beyond poor.....sounds like a robot very very poor and takes away from the book because of it.

So interesting...

I have always been a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and learning more of what inspired his works makes the series all the more special.

Love the interviews. Sarah Thornton def had lovely access. Not so into her descriptions and francophiliac writing. Not a fan of the narrator. All that said, totally worth the listen. Excellent subjects and interviews.

This book gives a seedy view of the art world, while true it seemed to focus on the sensational aspects of the art world and not on the substance. It was pretentious about its open unpretentiousness.

Very interesting interview reportage

The narrative flows nicely from one artist to the next.The author incorporates not only insights into the specific artists' approaches and philosophies but puts it all in a global context. The author looks at the people and the rolls they play in the art world today. It's difficult to conclude after listening to this book, that what is being touted today as the best contemporary art will stand the test of time.

Fascinating, enlightening and real.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 33 Artists in 3 Acts?

I loved Sarah Thorton's subtle comparison of Ai Weiwei with Jeff Koons. I had never considered the artists to be opposites before and yet their work symbolically critiques each other. Brilliant!

What about Tavia Gilberts performance did you like?

Gilbert's inflection was perfect, her pauses were appropriate and her voice felt warm and welcoming. I enjoyed spending 12 hours in the car with her.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could never listen to this book in a single sitting. I listened to it in 30 minute chunks, and it gave me a lot to think about at the end of each day.

This book is for art lovers and delves deep into the art market. A text version of this book with photos would be much more enjoyable to a casual art lover.

Extremely Interesting

I thought I had read all of John Steinbecks works needless to say; I was surprised when I came across this book published in 1948. I had never heard of it.

Steinbeck and Robert Capa, photographer, embarked on a six week Soviet Union tour during the early stages of the Cold War era. They visited Soviet Georgia, Moscow, Stalingrad, and Kiev. The report they created on life under Joseph Stalins command, is a highly valuable historical document.

The people portrayed in their literary and photographic archive, are seen living in totally different conditions from those in the West. They were rebuilding a war torn country with the use of only primitive tools as the Germans destroyed all mechanized equipment as they pulled out of Russia. Steinbeck and Capa tried to avoid meeting officials and ministers, but to find time to travel across the cities to speak to people and to understand the way they were living. They tried for honest reporting without drawing conclusions.

The book sort of reminds me of Travels with Charley because it is a non-fiction travel memoir. Steinbeck was a great observer of life, and characters. He wrote of the Russian people with great respect. Steinbeck writes very well about the humor in situations, like the nightmares of bureaucracy and the difficulties of travel. Great book and a must read for those interested in history or just a good Steinbeck story. Richard Poe narrated the book.

Steinbeck non-fiction is always good!

I love Steinbeck's writing, both his fiction and his non-fiction. So I am biased perhaps. This audio is as good as any of Steinbeck's later narratives, like Travels with Charley and Sea of Cortez, both of which I loved. A Russian Journal details Steinbecks' travels in Russia with Robert Capa after World War II. They went there to see how common folk lived and what was going on at ground level in the country. Steinbeck was the words man and Capa the photographs man. And Steinbeck reported in this book all the types of details and human interest events that he was known for in all his writing.

Loved it!

I loved every minute of it. Amandas voice was perfect for reading the book but I wish it was longer

This. Is. Good. Art.

This book showes what to do when life gets tough. As Gaiman himself has said it "make good art."

If artists would take Gaiman's advice and created their art in the example of this book, then maybe the story of Amanda Palmer wouldn't seem so alien. And as a result we could have a world filled with stronger and healthier relationships between artists and their fans.

I hope every striving artist read this book and decide to take the leap and ask the world. This book opened my eyes and I will do my best to ask or at least notice when I turn away donuts someone is gifting me.

The pleasure of giving is all I want to do with my art, so I will try to not take it away from others. (Artist or not)

What a brilliant wit Meave Binchy is. She's such a woman of her times and so wonderfully Irish. You see the sexual revolution, women's liberation, even the drama of the Brittish royals through her unflinchingly honestly eyes.

It was a good narrative for art enthusiasts who want to know more about this era of art history. A very enjoyable book!

Narrator is tone deaf.

This complex story suffers from a narrators voice that fails to modulate between war sags, biographic tales, and direct quotations from multiple primary sources. Probably a better read than audible version.

Fascinating Topic Becomes Dull

Between the slow pace of the narrator and the droning language from the author, a potentially exciting topic was about as interesting as watching grass grow.

Norman Lear-a timeless soul

What did you love best about Even This I Get to Experience?

Norman Lear's new book, "Even This I Get to Experience," is a thoughtful and well-written book. Instead of reading it, I listened to it because Norman was actually reading his own audio book. Hearing him tell his own story is like sitting at the foot of a wizened elder as he peels back the decades of learning, struggles, accomplishments, and love. Norman's not only a brilliant writer and spell binding story teller, he speaks with a convincing simplicity lodged between emotion and matter of fact objectivity.

At times I found myself learning, laughing, and sometimes blushing. I loved his family stories, career highs and lows, and his ceaseless desire to make the world a better and more interesting place. He speaks bluntly about his failed marriages, divorce, business failures, world issues, and more. Even better, he talks about what worked in his life, his love for his wife Lyn, and his unrelenting positive views on life. It's so unusual to listen to a 90 year old man whose agile mind operates at a 40 year old person's level of creativity. Norman Lear is a timeless soul.

Where does Walk to Beautiful rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This is one of the best books I've ever read or listened to! I literally lost sleep because I wanted to find out what happened next!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Walk to Beautiful?

There was one part of the story that sounded like something out of a horror movie but it was real life to Jimmy and his sister, Patricia. No one should have to experience something like that, especially a child! I don't want to give away the details. It's really amazing that Jimmy and Patricia lived through some of these terrible situations. For all of the bad things described in the first part of the book, they are outweighed by the beautiful love and appreciation that comes through later in the story when Jimmy speaks of Russell and Bea Costner, the couple who welcomed him into their home when he was living on the street.

Which scene was your favorite?

Crowd surfing at the concert at Madison Square Garden - Silly and cool at the same time! How many people can say they've done that? Jimmy completing the walk half way across the country was incredibly inspiring. I can't imagine taking 7 months out of your life to do something like that! It took such dedication to keep going and complete the walk even though it took longer than planned and Jimmy dealt with multiple physical hardships along the way. It was touching how many people reached out to help Jimmy Wayne and support Project Meet Me Halfway!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Jimmy Wayne approached legendary songwriter Skip Ewing with a song idea and they planned a meeting to write together! That took guts and it was the beginning of his career taking off.

This is the best book on this whole website 100% recommend to everyone. Like mystery? Check out this book to find out what one direction really think of their job. Like drama? Listen to Liam Payne talk about the troubles him and fellow band member louis Tomlinson face. This is a great book for everyone no matter which genre of books you are into this book includes all of them.
