Born in a middle-class trading family, Kishore Biyani started his career selling stonewashed fabric to small shops in Mumbai. Years later, with the launch of Pantaloons, Big Bazaar, Food Bazaar, Central and many more retail formats, he redefined the retailing business in India. Incidentally, Kishore Biyani's objective is to capture every rupee in the wallet of every Indian consumer, wherever they are - an investment banker living in a south Mumbai locality or a farmer in Sangli. As large business houses enter the retail space, Kishore Biyani is not just concentrating on retail but aiming to capture the entire Indian consumption space. From building shopping malls and developing consumer brands to selling insurance, he is getting into every business where a customer spends money.

Great Book on Entrepreneurship!!!
Magic man of retail
There is a lot to learn from Kishore Biyani and his book - it happened in India:
1) India is a land of opportunities and shortcomings, depending on the which lens you want to see it with. For a land of a billion people, challenges may come in the form of infrastructure, technology and what not. But the mind of an entrepreneur like Kishore, sees opportunities in a billion costumers.
2) An entreprenuer since childhood. There is an excerpt from the Kishore's childhood, where he organizes Disco Dandia in his community and it goes on to become a hit among the people. He shares how this builds the confidence in him, again something that strikes a chord with the reader.
2) There is an example that Kishore gives about buying a huge stock of white shirts for "Big Bazaar" and not being able to sell them! Amazing thought process. When they found out that the shirts are not selling for 500 rs even after going on sale, as they realized that their costumers were people who worked on shop floors, and wouldnt have any need for "crisp white shirts". Biyani suggests selling them for 100 rs, on a loss. This teaches us something very important, making bad decisions is ok, but knowing why they went wrong and rectifying them early on is very important.
3)Kishore's style of writing is very "at home". There are instances where he introduces his personal side - when he says that he just doesnt read all the geeky books, but also comics like tin tin. Such light moments brings a smile to your face when you realize that someone as big as him shares the same childhood pleasures as you.
Anyone can read this book (Indian, non- Indian) and take away so much from Kishore. Especially on taking calculated risks. The author has time and again demonstrated how taking risks in life is inevitable, if you want to grow. Some ventures will succeed and some will fail. It was a pleasure to read about his success and failures and how he shaped his dream empire.
Nice read!
Mind blowing book. Very encouraging
Kudos to Kishore Biyani and the author for their immense effort. Very comprehensive book that shows how Kishore Biyani built the companies under Future Group. The most impressive point is that this books shows the good heart of Kishore Biyani. After starting Big Bazaar and Food Bazaar he also cared for the small shops to make sure they also grow and not go out of business. Thus he made his business a vital organ of society there by touching and adding value in all spheres of Indians' life.
