To the end, What An Amazing Ride!
Bobby Pendragon is now a family institution. I have re-read this entire series four or five times now. This last instalment is definately more emotionally mature than book one, but then Bobby and crew are much older, and they've been through lots of refining fire.
Mr. MacHale's writing in such a way that I, as the reader, know only what the point of view characters know has been brilliant throughout the series and the pay off in this book is huge. Book 9, Raven Rise, left me hanging. The Soldiers of Halla opens with explenation of who Bobby really is.
By the end of the book, I cry happy tears in the last chapter every time.
The battle for Halla, and between Bobby and Saint Dane is classic good verses evil. Freedom of choice verses totalitarianism. I am greatful that my kids can read this and see brave kids making hard but good decisions, even when it hurts them to do so.
I have two daughters who also love these books. My 11 year old first started this series when she was 9 and has re-read the series twice. She always wants these books to be on her kindle and her mp3. Thanks to Mr. MacHale she is becoming an avid reader.
Mr. Dufris has taken lots of abuse in reviews. I completely disagree. His reading is magical. The voice he uses has always been apropriate to the book he is narating. He brings the stories to life and is consistant across the series. There are far worse narrators in the audible panthion.
    And So We Go...
This is the way it was meant to be.
    Hobey-ho, let's go!
Before I begin, let me start by saying I'm going to treat this review as a sum of the entire series, considering the same narrator (William Dufris) is throughout the entirety of this absolutely wonderful book series written by D. J. MacHale. Also, I'm assuming you're not going to try and read the series out of order.
WARNING; Small spoilers ahead. (Nothing so grievous as to ruin the story!)
Pendragon. It is a name I haven't forgotten since I read the series back in my high-school days. I remember asking the school librarian for a good fantasy or sci-fi to read, telling her that I had tried the popular ones and couldn't get hooked. She thought for a moment, wracking her brain before suggesting I give the Merchant of Death a try.
Boy, am I glad I did!
While all of my other nerdy, geeky friends were invested in Harry Potter and/or Lord of the Rings, my eyes were glued to the pages of D. J. MacHale's novel. From the very beginning, the style of writing had me absolutely enthralled. The story all the way back in book one starts off with your average middle-school boy, Bobby Pendragon, being thrown through space and time with his distant (and totally cool!) relative, Uncle Press, to a world unlike the Earth we're so familiar with. As each book in this ten-book series progresses, the plot becomes thicker with mysteries, drama, and action until the final installment of the Pendragon series; The Soldiers of Halla.

My 12 year old loved this series!
My 12 year old son basically inhaled this series as fast as he could. This was tied with the Riordan books as something he just motored through. It made a trip much easier to have him glued to these books. He loved the narration too. This was one of his favorite installments.
This will standout as a favorite family series
Would you consider the audio edition of Tales from the Hood to be better than the print version?
We have experienced only the audio edition. I think that it is more fun to experience that way, since there are so many different voices.
Who was your favorite character and why?
We love Puck in all of the books. Red has to be our favorite in this one. What a creepy twist on an old tale.
    Any additional comments?
These books are terrific for the whole family. I have 7- and 10-year-old girls, and they both love them. My husband willing listens once we catch him up on the plot. I'm so sad that we're not listening ot the last book.
    GREAT AWSOME AND MYSTERIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would you listen to Tales from the Hood again? Why?
Yes, Because it's a great book and one of the best I've listened to!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who was your favorite character and why?
I like Sabrina because she gets into trouble and is very interesting!
Have you listened to any of L. J. Gansers other performances before? How does this one compare?
YES , I would not compare any of his other performances besause this is by far the best!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    No ther wasn't.
    Any additional comments?
    YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tied with the Riordan books as son's favorites
What made the experience of listening to The Sisters Grimm the most enjoyable?
My son can't put these books down, and eagerly waited for the next installment. Other than the Riordan series, I haven't seen him that anxious to get the next book downloaded.
What did you like best about this story?
All of the allusions to fairy tales and other well-known stories.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
My 12 year old came close -- certainly was anxious each evening (our time to listen to books on tape) to get this playing.
    Any additional comments?
From an adult perspective I didn't love this series as much as my son -- but I would definitely recommend it to kids in his age group.

    Fairy Tales come to life
In this book two sisters meet fairy tale characters and find out that they are not always how the story portrays them. The girls are funny and brave. They don't always do what they are told to do. This is a fun book for a tween or grown-up with a playful spirit.
    Very funny!!
This is book 2, start with The Fairy Tales Detectives: The Sisters Grimm as book 1.
You have got to listen to these with your kids. Beware! This story ends abruptly without a resolution. You MUST get The Problem Child: The Sisters Grimm to have on hand. You won't be able to stop! These are so punk rock! (you'll get this comment once you start the series)

    Very Enjoyable
Sterling North was born around the same year as my grandmother, 1906. She was one of eight children and two of her brothers fought in WWI "The War to End all Wars" in the Navy on the same ship. I have always been interested in what it might have been like during the time she grew up as a child. This doesn't get close to her life except in that Sterling had a brother fighting in Europe and that he also got sick with the Spanish Flu. I remember my grandmother saying that her family was spread out around the world during the Spanish Flu pandemic and that they were lucky that not one of them died from it. Both things I remember my grandmother talking about. This story read by Ed Sala is one of the best audio books I've listened to. My twin boys listened to it when they were about five and really enjoyed it.
Organization of the chapters is a downfall
The story is very good, the narrator very good, but there should be more division between the tracks to make it easier to find your spot if you get lost.
    wilderness tale
loved every minute. delightful story of boyhood adventure. Vivid picture of life with a young raccoon.
    Fun book for all ages!
Just finished this lovely book, loved the narrator! Can't wait to share this book with my grandchildren! I laughed out loud at many of his sayings:))

One of my son's favorite series!
My then 12 year old just adored this series. He devoured it and would stay up late at night listening. I would highly recommend this series for anyone in his age range. Especially if the child likes updated versions of fairy tales.
    excellent!
This story was funny and funnier!! The realistic and dramatic voice was wonderful as well. I'm fascinated with THE SISTERS GRIMM. I have read 5 books of the series so far. Not one book of them let me down! Especially #4 is my favorite.
Wonderful start to a very engaging series
My daughter LOVED this series and this book in particular. This is a great light listen, and extremely appropriate for children under 10, especially girls. I thought this book was extremely well written and the story was very enjoyable. My daughter would give it 5 stars across the board, I gave it 4 because I like to save the 5 stars for books that I (that is ME) can't put down. If I could I would probably give this book 4.5 stars...the only thing that keeps this from 5 stars is because it is very much so a children's book and thus was just a bit predictable for an adult. That said, the main characters of this book are strong, relatable female characters that I liked my daughter to listen to. I felt that they showed her how young girls could be strong and demonstrated how sisters should look out for each other. I highly recommend this novel for people with young girls and who want to listen to something together. I also recommend it to anybody with children (of any sort), or for adults who enjoy books with the light atmosphere of "young adult/children" stories like atmosphere of the early books of Harry Potter or the Septimus Heap books. Now that I have said that I should clarify that this book only compares to HP and SP in the style/tone of the story...the plot and everything else are NOTHING like HP and SP. I would describe the The Sisters Grimm as a "fairy tale/fantasy realism/mystery/detective children???s novel. NOT "swords and magic fantasy". But the at
    ARGH!
I love these books but each book ends with a cliff-hanger! So far the events make us laugh and we have been having a great time. The silly comments from the girls like Freakazoid, Punk Rock and more. Just plain fun!
Love the series, but this is the best book
I have listened to this series over and over again for years. It is perfect for listening at work. The narrator is awesome. He is able to have distinct voices during conversations between Granny Relda, her two granddaughters and various fairy tale characters.
Puck has always been my favorite character and inn this book you get to see a different side of him.

Her family had to turn their house into a boarding house due to her father loosing his job during the depression. They found ways to save money and keep the household going, and get their boarders to stay. I thought it was a great book! My favorite in the collection is "Happy Birthday Kit".

Sweet Children's Book - stands test of time.
I read this book last night based on another's review and I am very glad that I did. It is a sweet children's book that was written 70 years ago but which holds up to the test of time. It touches on the very difficult subject of bullying and allows children to see that differences make others interesting. This book won the Newberry Award in 1945 and I believe it could still win the award if released today. There is an excellent review written by Brina, and I will not try to do what she did so well. I simply want to state that if I had a young child today, this book would be one we read starting tonight.
    One of my childhood favorites
I loved this sweet and sad little story as a child, and it still resonates. It will encourage anyone to be kinder to others who may e or seem to be "different".
