Ten years after Alex and Aaron Stowe brought peace to Quill and Artimé, their younger twin sisters journey beyond the islands in this first novel of a new sequel series to The Unwanteds, which Kirkus Reviews called "The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter".
Identical twins Fifer and Thisbe Stowe have amazing yet uncontrollable magical abilities. They're naturally more gifted than even their brother, Alex, the head mage of Artimé, could hope to be. But when they accidentally use their magic in the jungle of Artimé to strike down a beloved creature, Alex is furious and threatens to lock them away until they can learn to control their power.
The threat is soon forgotten, though, when Hux, the ice blue dragon, comes to Artimé bearing the horrible news that his siblings have been enslaved by the notoriously evil Revinir, ruler of the dragon land.
Seeking a chance to right their wrong and escape their brother's wrath, Thisbe, Fifer, and their friend Seth sneak away to rescue the dragons from grave peril. Will their untrained abilities be enough to save the dragons - and themselves - when they come face-to-face with the Revinir?

    Simba Voice
It's really too bad that Steve West was unable to do narration for this book as he had done in previous 7 books because he did a flawless job. Fiona Hardingham should have listened more to previous books. She really messed up Simba's voice and so many of the other voices were nit distinctive enough ti always know who was speaking. I hope future books have Steve West and if he's not available perhaps look for someone else.
    Not consistent narration
After having listened to previous books in series, it difficult to have the voices of the characters be so drastically different in this book. I.e. Simba's voice changes from a gruff growly voice in the previous to a slow southern drawl here... Very disconcerting. Story still good...
    Not a fan of narrator
Did not enjoy the narration for this book probably because I listened to all the other books. Simber having a southern drawl just didn't work.
    poor performance.
I love the book but i dOnt like the narrator i prefer Steve West.Hope the next series will be read by Steve West.
Great story, not a fan of narrator...
Loved the story, not crazy about the narrator, I guess Im just used to the one that narrated The Unwanteds books. I prefer Simber to NOT have a southern drawl, and the pronunciation of some of the names threw me for a bit since they were pronounced completely different than in The Unwanteds books.

When the legendary Lord of the Locker invades her father's kingdom and takes her little sister hostage, demanding the orb in exchange, Sapphira blames herself for the catastrophe and means to hand it over. But Jake finds out that if Jones gets the orb, he'll use its power to drown the world in a second Noah's Flood!
Now it's up to the aspiring young Lightrider and his friends to help the mermaid rescue her little sister and save the world from the same watery doom that drowned Atlantis - if Jake and the headstrong princess don't strangle each other first!
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent!
With a war on the horizon and the dark druids more intent than ever to get to Jake, he and his friends are sent to his Aunt's "out of the way" house! They are eager to have a nice quiet holiday, but as usual, trouble seems to find them! This time in the form of a royal mermaid, Princess Sapphira, daughter of King Nereus. She found a rare and powerful artifact that came from Atlantis and accidentally activated it. She quickly shut it off but not before the powerful magic was felt by some nefarious water folk. Word made it's way to Davy Jones and he wants the artifact badly!! So badly that he invades her fathers kingdom and takes her little sister hostage. But Sapphira hides the thing and goes in search of her sister.
Meanwhile, while testing out Archie's sub, Jake stumbles across, not only the artifact but the Princess too. When he finds out that Davy Jones intends to use it to flood the world to enlarge his domain, Jake and his friends find themselves fighting shark headed men, Davy Jones and the Dark Druids! Will this be the end of the gang??
This series is one that should be way more popular than it is. It is chocked full of amazing characters, action, adventure and fantastical world building and creatures, to keep everyone wanting more. I fell in love with the world and characters way back when I read the first and here we are at number 5 and the story is still as fresh and energetic as ever.
The characters are among my favourites as I find them to be "real". By that I mean that they act and behave exactly as they should. They are young people and behave like young people, they are just drawn into the trouble no matter where they go. They are extremely well written and developed and I loved each of them, even Davy Jones!!
The plot was amazingly entertaining and engaging! Being book 5, I thought we may have some things rehashed in the plot, but no, as I said before, it's as fresh and entertaining as always.

    Narrator: MacLeod Andrews
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-03-17
    Publisher: Scholastic Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 62 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Dan Gemeinhart brings his signature blend of action, heart, and beautiful writing to a tale of misfits struggling to survive.
Jonathan Grisby is the newest arrival at the Slabhenge Reformatory School for Troubled Boys - an ancient, crumbling fortress of gray stone rising up from the ocean. It is dark, damp, and dismal. And it is just the place Jonathan figures he deserves.
Because Jonathan has done something terrible. And he's willing to accept whatever punishment he has coming.
Just as he's getting used to his new situation, however, a freak accident leaves the troubled boys of Slabhenge without any adult supervision. Suddenly the kids are free, with an entire island to themselves. But freedom brings unexpected danger. And if Jonathan can't come to terms with the sins of his past and lead his new friends to safety then every boy on the island is doomed.
Dan Gemeinhart's most gripping novel yet, this is a tale of misfits and outcasts at odds and in peril and a redemption story that shines a light on dark truths to reveal that the strongest prisons of all are the ones we build for ourselves.

    amazing
super good in emotional in a really good way and it's very very good and scary
    Vivid Writing
This story kept me turning the pages. I did not know what to expect but as I read, The story just consumed me. As a librarian myself, I loved the Old Librarian character tucked away in the castle. A Great Read!!
    best book ever good job
loved it it was so great the narrator good job playing the character's you made the book spooky and funny and injoyible at the same time I paid good money I see
Entertaining, But a Mild version of Flies
This , I can see, would be a great introduction to the classic, Lord of the Flies. I thought that just after Jonathan's first night. Low and Behold, it is actually mentioned towards the end of the 3rd of the book. The Librarian is the best character, the only one not insane or delusional. A nice read for 6th grade and up boys
Dan Gemeinhart + MacLeod Andrews = Well Done
I have enjoyed all of Gemeinhart's books so far, and Scar Island again shows how he really understands his middle grade audience and their collective love of lots of action and drama with some humor sprinkled in. In this story, the main character has massive inner and outer conflicts, builds deep friendships, and overcomes big obstacles to survive. When you add the crazy-talented Andrews as the reader, you get a gripping tale indeed. My fifth graders love this author and his other books, and I know they'll just eat up Scar Island as well.

    Publisher's Summary:
Owen, Kiel, and Bethany confront secrets, stolen memories, and some very familiar faces in the follow-up to the second book in the New York Times best-selling series The Story Thieves - which was called a "fast-paced, action-packed tale" by School Library Journal - from the author of the Half Upon a Time trilogy.
Owen Conners' whole life changed the day he found out his classmate Bethany was half fictional and could take him into any book in the library. Which story would they jump into next? Another fantasy, like the Kiel Gnomenfoot, Magic Thief books? Maybe something with superheroes? Owen's up for anything except mysteries - those just have too many hidden clues, twists that make no sense, and an ending you never see coming.
Then Owen wakes up in a real-life mystery with a memory that's been erased and too many questions. How did Kiel Gnomenfoot lose all of his magic? Where is Bethany? And who's the annoying guy wearing the question mark mask and Sherlock Holmes hat, taunting Owen and Kiel that Bethany is in grave danger?
Bethany is trapped in a hidden room that's slowly filling with water, and she can't escape until her friends find her. But is she imprisoned by more than just chains and a locked door? What's she hiding from Owen and Kiel?

    This one is fun
This is the 2nd book in James Rileys, The Story Thievespl series. Im amazed by the twists and turns and change of direction this book takes. The first nine chapters have the narrator repeating, over and over and over, missing text, missing text, missing text with the odd line thrown in. In the print version, those chapters have pages of little back dashes indicating information is missing. Over the chapters that follow, the story moves forward by telling the story, but also filling in the missing chapters. It makes for an interesting read / listen. There is also a timer counting down from 2 hours (but not in real time). As a reader, or a listener, you really need to pay attention or find yourself jumping back for clarification. In the end though, its worth it and has me truly hooked! Wow! Going to get the next one!
    Not cool
I really enjoy this app and so do my two boys. We read every night. So some nights it's nice just to listen as they drift off to sleep. We have just finished Harry Potter the third one and decided to get a different story. After searching for one that sounded interesting we decided on this one. Excited to listen we began downloading it on to hear "missing text missing text missing text" honestly I figured we'd let the entire thing download and it would work. Nope doesn't just says missing text all the way through. I have all four Harry Potter and two other stories that I listen to and have no problem with those. So for now I'm still ok with this app but don't waste your money on this story the stolen chapters
Dont even buy on sale! Worst book ever!
I had to give one star but if I could give one fourth of a star that would be more appropriate! What a huge disappointment!
There is something wrong with the recording.
My son got through 6 hours of this book and then quit because he was so frustrated. So I listened and there is obviously something wrong with the recording as of November 25th, 2017. I hope it gets fixed.
    Missing Text, be patient!
    This is a wonderful series.

Like a Chinese one thousand and one nights
I am a twelve year old boy who loves culture and this book fascinated me. The fact that stories never die is very present as well as the love of culture building stories. I would recommend this book to children fascinated by culture as well as parents who want to show their children this concept of a story and it's importance.
PS: this novel was so intriguing that I took time off playing video games just to write this review.

It's the late 1970s, and fitting in becomes more difficult as Iran makes US headlines with protests, revolution, and finally the taking of American hostages. Even mood rings and puka shell necklaces can't distract Cindy from the anti-Iran sentiments that creep way too close to home.

You are gonna cry at the end, it's SOOOO happy!
I couldn't stop listening to this book. It was that interesting! It's about acts of kindness. It's about how history is the stories of people and the battles they fight within. It's about being a foreigner in a strange country. And it's about the Iran Hostage Crisis of the late 1970s. It's about wanting and finding friends and the importance of family. But I can only say these things looking back on all the little events that happened in the story. While I was listening, I just wanted to find out what happened next. This is a good book for mature ten year olds and up. Nice for a family road trip. I am 65 and I loved it!!!
    It Ain't So Awful, Falafel
It is a narrative of a sweet Iranian-American girl living in California the moment Iran's history changed and it started to be seing as an enemy of the US. It teaches a lot about being human before being from a country or following a religion. Highly recommended.
    Fascinating story to listen to!
Congrats to the the Author Firoozeh Dumas, receiving the inaugural New Americans Children's history book prize. Firoozeh is a great story teller. She makes it so easy to picture each scene while she is capturing moments of history in her strong words with her warm voice. I have also listened to Funny in Farsi & Laughing without accent as well! Kudos to her.
    Fantastic book for all ages!
I listened to this audiobook and really enjoyed it! I love to learn about other cultures especially when there is great humor involved. My daughters also listened and couldn't turn it off! The themes of kindness, and perseverance really spoke to them. I'd recommend this book to everyone!
    Wonderfully written and narrated.
Listened to the audiobook everyday with my 9 year old son on the way to school. We both loved it and was sad when it ended. My son is excited to listen to more of her books.
