Engaging!
This book was very interesting. What I like about this one is that I don't know what's going to happen. When Nikka first goes into the new tribe, I'm not sure what she's going to find. What exactly are the elders going to do with Zyan? Can't be sure. Hints are dropped later, but I like that I can't completely road-map out the story from the outset. Random surprises pop up, too. That kept me reading--I read the book just about straight through.
I found Luka's storyline the least interesting, though, because he doesn't do ANYTHING for most of the story. Lots of action is happening in Zyan's and Nikka's storylines, but I felt that for the longest time, Luka's story was standing still. I know his story/relationship thing was setting up an arc for something else, but for this current novel, I didn't see how his perspective had much to contribute.
I was very pleased to see that there weren't that many grammatical or word choice errors. They WERE there, though, so the proofreader needs to step it up. However, it was VASTLY improved over the last book.
Also, we begin to find out more about the relationship of this world to our world, towards the end. However, still, some elements just don't make sense. Many things are given English names, or names with latin roots. I was willing to forgive that, just imagining that it would be something equivalent in whatever language the people in the story are really speaking. However, when the word Scientia pops out, I thought that was cheating a bit much, and that concept, and the reaction to it, seemed kind of awkward in the story. The talk regarding the Phasma and what they are like also seems forced and awkward.
Finally, I feel that while Luka's storyline had a definite ending point, that Zyan's and Nikka's didn't. Even though this is part of the series, I feel that each book has to have its own ending point. The Aeris story should have mentioned more about what happened after the unveiling, and Zyan's story could have ended with the newcomers settling in, but I feel like there needed to be a few pages after each of those stories to make each one feel complete.
Overall, very good!
A good book to read!!
Well Kate has done it again. I sit down to read her book and all of a sudden it's evening. I really like how she sucks you into her books and makes you care about the characters.
Nikka is really a character that has a lot to do in her world and my sympathies are with her. She cares about her role in her world and doesn't mind using her powers to make it better. Now that Zyander is not sulking about his life and has purpose he's really beginning to grow on me. He's really looking at the bigger picture of his tribes magic. I'm glad he's learning how much of his magic is instinctive. Luka, I think has grown the most because he's finally stepped away from his background and embraced his circumstances.
