Surprisingly Creepy
This is a surprisingly creepy little YA horror novel. Near as I can figure, it was originally written in the 1990's and it retains that old school YA feel. No drugs. No sex. Just crushes, nice teens, and creepy paranormal goodies.
I really liked our main character and really wanted to know how this would all end.
Some of it was fairly predictable, but I've got a lot of horror and YA reading under my belt. I imagine at the time it was written, it probably wasn't quite so easy to predict.
All in all a very good read that stands the test of time!
A chilling summer time novel!!!!
I thought The Accident was a chillingly great ghost story about decades long revenge. The plot was great, I didn't think the characters were developed as well as say R.L. Stine's characters in his novels. However, overall, I thought this ghostly novel had just the right creepy and haunting plot to help me handle this summer heat!!!!
Good Read
I did read this when I was younger and remember it being well more hiding under the covers scary. But it was still delightful to read again and see what I remembered from years ago.
My First Diane Hoh Book
Forty-six years ago, a 15-year-old girl named Juliet accidentally drowned in a nearby lake just before her long-awaited Sweet Sixteen birthday party. Now, in 1991, Juliet's ghost appears to another 15-year-old girl, Megan Logan. In just a few weeks Megan will be celebrating her own Sweet Sixteen birthday, but, in the meantime, Juliet pleads for Megan to trade places with her for just one week. At first, Megan is reluctant and scared, but she eventually gives in after hearing Juliet's sad story of dying so young.
Once Juliet makes the physical transition into Megan's body, she doesn't waste any time taking over Megan's life--first, by giving herself a sexier makeover and then by seducing Megan's semi-boyfriend (Justin Carr). In time, Juliet's true colors begin to show when she starts acting rude and inconsiderate towards Megan's family and best friend (Hilary Bench).
Yet Megan has bigger problems to worry about, such as the recent unexplained accidents befalling her friends and family. Each one ultimately leads back to Megan, and Megan begins to fear she may be the next victim. If she is, what will happen to her soul if she dies while Juliet still inhabits her body? Will she return to life once Juliet leaves--or will she remain a ghost forever?
"The Accident" was the first book I ever read by Diane Hoh, sometime back in my middle school days.
