    Title: My American Revolution
Subtitle: Crossing the Delaware and I-78
    Author: Robert Sullivan
    Narrator: Mike Chamberlain
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-25-12
    Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
In My American Revolution, Robert Sullivan investigates the true history of the crossing of the Delaware, its down-home reenactment each year for the past half a century, and - toward the end of a personal odyssey that involves camping in New Jersey backyards, hiking through lost "mountains", and eventually some physical therapy - he evacuates illegally from Brooklyn to Manhattan by handmade boat.
He recounts a Brooklyn historian's failed attempt to memorialize a colonial Maryland regiment; a tattoo artist's more successful use of a colonial submarine, which resulted in his 2007 arrest by the New York City police and the FBI; and last but not least, along New York harbor, Sullivan re-creates an ancient signal beacon.
    Critic Reviews:
"A nostalgic, witty, and always informative topographic retrospective of the sites pertinent to the American Revolution takes
Vogue contributing editor and journalist Sullivan to the action seen by the middle colonies especially - New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey... Sullivan's historic anecdotes form a loose-limbed, irreverent, surprising take on American history." (
    Publishers Weekly)
"Readers are sure to learn plenty from [Sullivan's] travels... Tailor-made for trivia lovers and readers who don't mind the scenic route." (
    Kirkus Reviews)
"[An] engaging, humorous, and often surprising series of personal reflections upon critical episodes in the birth of a nation. Sullivan combines solid historical knowledge, sensitivity to the physical landscape, and a wry sense of the absurdities inherent in mythmaking to provide a thoroughly enjoyable and original perspective on our revolution." Random Rants and Walks
Would you try another book from Robert Sullivan and/or Mike Chamberlain?
Yes and no. I would not choose a book written by Robert Sullivan. It was just random thoughts of interest to the author, but not to me. Mike Sullivan lent excitement in his voice to a singularly non interesting book. But the loan did not save the book
What was most disappointing about Robert Sullivans story?
There was no tethered story at all.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Mike Chamberlain?
Yes, there was, at least in his voice, an interest in the meanderings and wanderings of Robert Sullivan's "story." With a real story, he would be very good.

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-22-12
    Publisher: Books in Motion
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
Grasshoppers in Summer examines the conflict between Native American plains tribes and the U.S. westward expansion from 1866 to 1876. It begins with the Fetterman massacre and negotiation of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. That treaty ended Red Cloud's war for control of the Bozeman Trail. President Ulysses S. Grant came to office a year later on a reform platform that included Indian peace policy. Relentless cultural, economic, political and religious pressure frustrated Grant's effort to reform Indian policy. Military, railroad and mining interests conspired to destroy the Fort Laramie Treaty. That broken promise led to the drum beat of war. The plain tribe's last great victory at Greasy Grass would win the bitter spoils of total defeat.

Great Court Martial Cases, originally published in 1972, recounts some of the most dramatic court martial cases in history and shows how military trials have not only changed military law, but have affected the very course of American history. From Benedict Arnold to the Mylai Massacre, the exciting cases covered in this book involve such legendary Americans as Stephen Decatur, Jr.; Herman Melville and James Fenimore Cooper; Will Rogers and Fiorello LaGuardia (who descirbed one court as consisting of "nine beribboned dogrobbers"); and World War II heroes such as "Hap" Arnold, Douglas MacArthur, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
    Critic Reviews:
    "In
Great Court-Martial Cases author Joseph DiMona has produced an eminently readable book - one that should be read with interest and enjoyment not only by historians and lawyers, but by servicemen past and present. Indeed, I commend this work to all those concerned about the fairness and integrity of American justice [and] interested in the reform of an increasingly criticized military justice system three times the size of the federal criminal justice system." Contrary to popular myth, these men were not fighting machinesthey were young, scared, and, in the end, incredibly mortal figures whose humanity proved the defining characteristic of their greatness. René Armstrong's book displays this humanity in full force. Her preservation and contextualization of J.R. Jones's letters intimately reveal the mind of a young citizen-soldier who was far from home and those he loved. Her contribution to the historical record is one that will be valued for generations. 'Lawrence J. Hickey, author and historian.
"I must say goodnight, darling. If you only knew how much your letters meant to me. I thought they'd never get here, but I knew it wasn't your fault. Here, I've written five pages, and on all of them, all I want to say is I love you and how I wish time would fly. I'll write again shortly. AlwaysI love you, J.R.""
When René Armstrong's husband found a box of 295 letters in a junk store, he had no idea the profound piece of history in his possession. Thus began a journey to discover who these two young people were who met on a blind date, communicating to each other over three years in the only way that this era could affordthrough love letters that encompassed two continents. James Richard Jones and Helen Elnora Bartlett had a wartime romance whose voice was heard 58 years later, crying out to be listened to.
Enhanced with official, now declassified government documents, the love story of J.R. and Elnora unfolds as he writes to the love of his life from the jungles of New Guinea. Held together by Wings and a Ring, their promise of tomorrow would have to survive a year of war.

Yes, the story is one that many older people relate to.

I enjoyed how the couple met and how the author came to write the book.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Laura Wagner?
The author would have been a better narrator because she is passionate about the story and knew when to provide inflection, etc.

Title: The Lowdown: A Short History of the Origins of the Vietnam War
    Author: David Anderson
    Narrator: Lorelei King
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-23-11
    Publisher: Creative Content Ltd
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
A concise history of the origins of The Vietnam War for a new generation.
On September 2, 1945, Vietnamese revolutionary Ho Chi Minh boldly proclaimed his countrys independence. Just as Americans had done almost two centuries earlier in defiance of the British, Ho declared that Vietnamese patriots were, after many decades of French domination, affirming that all the peoples on the earth are equal from birth and have a right to live and to be happy and free.
Among the cheering Vietnamese assembled for this auspicious announcement were American military officers, who had worked with Ho and his Vietminh political front to defeat the Japanese imperial forces that had occupied Indochina and had replaced French authority for the previous four years.
Envisioning this dramatic scene and not knowing the tragic saga that would follow; someone might assume that Americans and Vietnamese had much in common on which to build a harmonious international relationship. In reality, however, the two nations were destined to collide in a war that would ultimately cost more than two million Vietnamese and more than 58,000 American lives.
How could it have happened? This fascinating story of how the Vietnamese people resisted external control and moved outward like pioneer settlers to occupy the country that became Vietnam, creating a unified and independent government, is in many ways like the story of early America.
In this concise history of the origins of the Vietnam War, Dr David Anderson, Professor of History at California State University, Monterey Bay, examines the events that led to one of the most controversial wars the US has ever known and succinctly explains, for a new generation, why this conflict still matters today.

    Delivers What It Promises
Published by Creative Content Ltd in 2011.
    Narrated by Lorelei King
    Duration: 1 hour, 20 minutes
Creative Content has a whole series of short audiobooks and kindle books in its "The Lowdown" series. The main feature of the series is that they are short (a little more than an hour or about 35 "pages" on the Kindle) and give the reader a quick look at a topic.
In this case, the topic is the origin of the Vietnam War. Note, this is not a history of the entire war, but if you ever wondered just how the United States got involved in the Vietnam War, this nifty little history will do the job just fine.
Anderson roots his history in the aftermath of World War II. There are two major factors at play. The first is the desire of the French to re-establish their pre-war colonial empire and re-assert themselves as a major player on the world scene despite their being conquered by the Germans at the beginning of World War II. The second factor is America's determination to contain Soviet Communism. Anderson traces these two movements and demonstrates that they led to a collision with Ho Chi Minh's anti-colonial communist movement in Vietnam. He follows them through the Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson administrations. He ends with the Tonkin Gulf Resolution that was widely interpreted to give Johnson permission to act in Vietnam as he saw fit.
This is an easy to digest history. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know a little more about the Vietnam War or for use in any class that is looking for a relatively short reading (or listen) in a 20th Century American history class.

In clear, lucid prose, Vietnam War, Revised Edition explores the critical questions surrounding the United States' experience in Vietnam: What led President Lyndon B. Vietnam Vet Opinion
I recieved this book in a timely manner. It is used, but there were no signs of wear and tear. In fact, I thought it was new when I opened the package. I am very pleased with the condition of the book.
I bought the book because I am a Vietnam combat veteran. As I age, I find that the anger and fustration I felt towards the Vietnamese people was unwarranted, and needed to find a fresh perspective towards the people and their culture. I reviewed this book and thought it a good way to start some healing. I wanted a brief history of why we were there. This book gave me a very good understanding of the events that led up to the war, the key players involved, and how the escalation occurred.
I would recommend this book to others for the same reasons I read it, and for the curious who are exploring it for the first time. I believe that it would be a good starter book for younger readers, ages around 13-14.
Informative but not without its flaws
THE VIETNAM WAR ALMANAC is fairly-well put together, with a chronological aspect, kicking off with a bit of general Vietnamese history, right through French colonialism, Japanese World War II occupation, rekindling of French control, the defeat at Dem Bien Phu, the ensuing politics and division between North and South Vietnams and finally direct U.S. involvement beginning with the landing of the U.S. 9TH Marines at Da Nang on March 8, 1965 and on to the evacuation of Saigon in 1975 and beyond. The book then moves on into the category of the Land, Sea and Air Wars in that volatile country, and then some. There is a brief full-color photo section in the beginning of the book, followed by an array of b&w photography throughout. While the color photos are nice and detailed, about half the b&w are dismally vague, almost to the point where they are too darkened to fully appreciate. Then there are a few inaccuracies which played no small part in my three-star rating. One was a b&w photo whose caption read "..North Vietnamese troops crossing a river...". In actuality, the shot was taken during the Korean War and the soldiers are actually Red Chinese, judging from their quilted combat fatigues and fur-laden hats...in tropical surroundings? I don't think so! Then, there is an entry under March 9, 1965 stating "...U.S. Marines of the 9th Division landed at Da Nang armed with M-16s..." M-16s? Wrong again! Try standard-issue M-14 rifles.

FNH Audio presents the story of Fourth Massachusetts Cavalry, a regiment that was formed during the American Civil War. Its officers were almost all experienced men and the rank and file was likewise seeded with experience. The unit served with distinction throughout its existence. The book comes in three sections. The first tells of the "Battle at High Bridge". The Fourth were dispatched to the bridge having been told the defences would be light or non-existent. The truth however was somewhat different. Not only was it defended by infantry but also dug-in artillery in a strong position. The second section tells of the part "the Fourth" played in raising the Union flag in Richmond, as told by the wife of a southern general, Major-General George E. Pickett. As the Northern army closed in, the civilian and military occupants of Richmond began pulling out. The southern troops tried to fire the town. Into this maelstrom rode "the Fourth".
The final part starts with president Lincoln entering Richmond and is escorted around by "the Fourth", and then follows the Fourth as they move onto Appomattox. There they meet and escort General Lee, through the lines and on to his home.
